WOW! My heart is full! This film captures the essence of Michael Beckwith, the clear love and joy that moves through him in all that he does. The film, using Michael & Rickie Beckwith’s lives as an example, shows how each of us can tap into the unlimited potential of our own lives. While watching I could feel the shift within me. Beautifully produced, the film opens the door for new choices, new and expansive ways of living in the world.

To say that Michael Bernard Beckwith is a profound spiritual teacher is an understatement, and to see the way he integrates his spiritual practice into his own life was truly amazing. I will be watching this film again and again and buying it for all my friends.

There are plenty of well written reviews on this page and the standard box set of season 3 Uncut Bleach page that all articulate very well just how awesome this show is. Season 3 ranks among the best (though later seasons which have aired in Japan are EVEN better, and this sesaon sets the groundwork for the later storyline.)

I am strictly going to talk about the Limited Collector’s Hollow Mask which comes with this set, so you can decide if it is worth it the extra money. Someone smarter than me will probably post the picture, or I will if I can figure out how. It still warrants a description though, more than just a visual.

I am not usually one for “collectible knick knack” items found in limited edition sets, like figurines, etc. But this is just really, really cool.

The hollow mask is very high quality, seems like it’s some type of material similar to ceramic–but very solidly molded (not delicate.) It is boldly painted, and brilliantly, is it a fragment of the mask (a “broken” mask piece) and comes with a display stand, the base of which is weighted and is the familiar substitute soul reaper badge.

It is not meant for cosplay, and the “broken” Hollow mask (it belongs to a certain character, and figures quite prominently in later seasons) is slightly smaller than the size of the dvd box set. (It comes packaged in its own box, which is shrink-wrapped with the dvd box set.) Again, I am not usually one for collectible items, but as a fan of the show, this was just one of the coolest possible bonus items. The inner anime geek in me is in love with it.

Now that they’ve gotten into the Soul Society and the Seireitei, Ichigo and Co. have ANOTHER problem: rescuing Rukia and escaping with their body parts intact.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to be that easy. “Bleach: The Rescue” kicks everything about this brilliant anime up a notch — lots of blood, sword-fights, a fiery climax at the execution grounds, and some amazing character development. But the best part is that the treacherous conspiracy merely hinted at in prior episodes, which sparks a minor civil war within the Seireitei.

Yoruichi starts the badly-wounded Ichigo on a special new training regimen — to rescue Rukia, he must achieve achieve bankai (the ultimate release of a zanpakuto) in three days. In the meantime, Uryu has encountered the most horrendous of Soul Reapers, who is responsible for the death of a loved one, and Captain Hitsugaya is confronted by an old friend who tries to kill him — accusing him of murdering Captain Aizen.

But the chaos really starts when Rukia’s execution day rolls around: mass murder is revealed, captains turn against one another, and Renji fights a devastating battle against the implacable Byakuya. Ichigo appears on the execution hill with devastating new power — intent on rescuing Rukia and defeating her brother once and for all. But when he seems to be losing, a horrific new change comes over him.

And in the meantime, the conspiracy that’s ripping apart the Soul Reapers is revealed — the identify of the Big Bad and his sidekicks, the reason he wants Rukia dead, and how many people he’ll coldly destroy to get what he wants.

“Bleach: The Rescue” is a turning point for the entire series — everything before it has built to this point, and everything in the future will spring from it. For an action anime, it is also quite heavy on the plot as it sets up the Big Bad: faked murders, real murders, conspiracies, hypnotic tricks, betrayals, a clever triple-cross perpetrated by Gin Ichimaru, and Urahara’s hidden motive in helping Rukia.

There’s also lots of brilliantly explosive action using ice dragons, black fire, razor-sharp cherry blossoms, exploding Soul Reapers, a giant bone-snake, and a firebird the size of a submarine. The action only serves to underscore the tension that is building throughout the entire season, until it explodes on Sokyoku Hill. It’s also got solid dialogue, some quiet moments for Ichigo’s pals (hanging out in prison) and some flashbacks to Renji, Rukia, Kira and Momo’s days at the Academy.

Fortunately, all this dark stuff is speckled with funny moments like Ichigo’s relaxation in a healing spring (”I AM GOING TO DROWN YOU!”), and an entire episode in which the characters unwind and recover after the events of “the rescue.”

Our Hero really shows his stuff in this season — Ichigo puts his life on the line to reach an incredible level of spiritual power, and rescue Rukia no matter what happens. Too bad he turns out to have a freaky dark side (and Johnny Yong Bosch has a brilliant demon cackle). And Uryu inadvertently gets to the bottom of his grandfather’s death, and goes to devastating lengths to get revenge for what happened to him.

But most of the characters get to shine in this, although Chad and Orihime are somewhat neglected: the Yoruichi-obsessed Soi Fon, the kindly Ukitake and his best buddy Kyoraku, the happily hyperaggressive Zaraki, boy-genius Hitsugaya, and the fusty and arrogant Head Captain Yamamoto (among many others). We also learn how far Renji will go for Rukia, as well as the true reason why Byakuya has been so cold and seemingly cruel.

As for the limited edition, the big collectible toy bonus that differs from the regular one is apparently… a Hollow mask. Given the storyline here, I presume it’s one belonging to a certain orange-haired teen.

“Bleach: The Rescue” is a brilliant arc of action-packed, tightly-wound anime, with a shocking twist at the core of the story. Definitely a must-see — especially for everything that comes later.

MPI Home Video has made a terrific decision here, combining all of its previously released DVD boxed sets of this classic 14-film series into one affordable package. It is a must buy for any Sherlock Holmes fan, or anyone who enjoys classic mysteries, who does not already have all of these wonderful films.

When these were first released on DVD it was truly a cause for celebration, as it represented the completed painstaking restoration of all 14 classic films by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

The UCLA Theatre Archives did an award-winning job in restoring and thus preserving these great films from 35mm master copies into the digital format, sometimes literally being forced to piece together the celluloid remnants that they found.

It took the archivists several years to complete the entire project, but was well worth the wait. The result is that the black and white images seem as fresh today as when the films were released to theatres more than 40 years ago. The archivists deserve a hearty thanks from all movie fans concerned with preserving America’s classic cinema heritage for future generations to enjoy.

This boxed set includes a facinating feature on what it took to restore the films. Well worth watching, it’s wonderful that it’s included.

Atmospherically, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is arguably the best of the 14 Holmes films, and the only one based specifically on a Conan Doyle story. It, and “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” are the only two “period” films in the series and run longer, the remainder taking place in then modern-day England and America of the late 30s and early 40s and run about 90 minutes each.

Because the “regular” series was made during World War II, there are many references to it, as well as some facinating patriotic drum beating on the part of Holmes that concludes many of the films.

In both “Hound” and “Adventures,” Holmes dons his deerstalker cap, popularized by original Strand Magazine illustrator Sidney Paget who made the image synonymous with the great detective. It is interesting to note that in the first of the non-period films in the series, Holmes reaches for his handy deerstalker, but is stopped by Watson. “Holmes,” Watson said, “you promised.” Leaving the deerstalker on the peg, Holmes grabs a “modern” hat instead.

Rathbone is especially sharp in “Hound of the Baskervilles,” and is partnered by Bruce, who plays a bumbling Watson throughout the 14 films that was not Conan Doyle’s vision of the great sleuth’s biographical “Boswell.” Nonetheless, the pairing is hugely entertaining and satisfying.

The creation of the moor, the sinister grimpen mire and truly terrifying hound remains fantastic and does much to engender this story as one of Conan Doyle’s most popular with modern-day

readers and viewers alike.

The final scene represents the only reference any of the 14 films made to Holmes’ “seven-percent” cocaine habit as Rathbone asks Bruce to retrieve “the needle.” The scene, criticized as too risque by 1939 audiences, caused the film’s producers to make a conscious decision to omit any additional mention of Holmes’ recreational drug use in future outings.

All of the films are really enjoyable and bear up wonderfully well under repeat viewings. For me, two of the best films of the “regular” series are The Scarlet Claw, where a village believes the supernatural is at work killing people, and Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, where Holmes must solve the riddle of the Musgrave Ritual.

Not matter your age, these films deliver hours of enjoyment, and thanks to the UCLA Theater Archives and MPI, will for generations to come. I only wish that Rathbone and Bruce had lived to see their great work released to new audiences in this pristine DVD condition.

Philip St. John Basil Rathbone (13 June 1892, Johannesburg–21 July 1967, New York) and William Nigel Bruce (4 Sep. 1895, Ensenada–8 Oct 1953, Santa Monica) starred in 14 Sherlock-Holmes films as, respectively, Holmes and Watson. The first two films (1939) are period pieces whereas the last 12 (1942-46) are contemporary (”modern”).

“The complete Sherlock Holmes collection” is a 6/06 reissue on 5 DVDs of a 14-DVD set (in 5 boxes) previously issued by MPI 10/03-4/04. The reissues by MPI, which involve restorations of the 1942-46 films, have been critically acclaimed. This review thus just compares the 2006 and 2003-04 sets of reissues (this review also supplements the previous two reviews by R. Smith, 7/18, and E. Hornaday, 4/10):

OVERVIEW: 2006 reissue = 14 films on 5 DVDs (see below for track listing) in 1 box 1 1/4″ wide VERSUS 2003-04 reissue = 14 films on 14 DVDs in 5 boxes totaling 4 3/8″ wide.

DVD CONTENT: Same in both reissues except the 2006 box set has for “Dressed to kill” an added (i.e., unfortunately, not on the earlier issues) commentary by actress Patricia Morison and Holmes scholars David Gregory and Richard Valley.

BOOKLET/INSERT AND TEXT CONTENT: The 2006 box set has 2 pages of text besides the front cover. The 2003-04 reissues have 5 booklets (”production notes”) written by Richard Valley, 8 pages each for “Hound” and “Adventures,” 16 pages each for volumes 1-3. Although there is some overlap material, these 64 pages have many pictures and have much information on the 14 films, including cast listings.

SUMMARY OF PROS AND CONS OF 2006 BOX SET:

PROS: (1) much less expensive–$129.99 list ($119.99 Amazon in 7/06) versus $249.90 list ($224.95 Amazon in 7/06); (2) takes about 3″ less shelf space; (3) more convenient to shuffle only 5 DVDs than 14; (4) added commentary for “Dressed to kill.”

CONS: (1) no booklet insert and thus almost no information on the films included–a major deficiency; (2) appearance rather stark, with only 1 picture of Rathbone on the box (a pic of Bruce should also have been included); (3) flimsy cardboard case with 5 slim clear plastic DVD holders that fold out clumsily with the aid of a cloth puller and that are awkwardly hinged with only cellophane tape (and thus becoming easily unhinged, that is, DVD trays 1-4 separating from tray 5).

(b) Theatrical trailers (6, not restored–for films 7-10, 13, 14–TT0:7:05)

(c) Footage of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle–TT0:1:15. Note: This is from a summer 1927 Movietone film of Conan Doyle (1859-1930) and is much abbreviated. The film is TT0:11:45 on the 2001 DVD of “Terror by night” by Focus Films.

FINAL COMMENT: The 2006 box set crams 3 films on one DVD (e.g., DVD #1 with 232 min.). Some compression may be involved, but film quality seems equal to the 2003-04 issues with only one film per DVD.

Most viewers strongly disagree with the idea that “Riddles in Stone” is less impressive than “The New Atlantis.” On the contrary, “Riddles” is said to be the best documentary ever produced on Freemasonry and the influence of secret societies in America. This influence is revealed through the architecture of Washington D.C., but this only forms a backdrop for the filmmakers to expose the occult nature of Masonic philosophy. Most impressive are the contrasting interviews with Freemasons and other members of arcane societies alongside those who criticize Masonry for having a hidden agenda.

One can hear from their own mouths what the Masons and esoteric groups really believe — and their answers will shock you. If you want to learn the difference between “conspiracy theories” and REAL history, see this film. The visual evidence presented in the architecture, street layout, and various monuments in Washington D.C. are undeniable. Also, the film is the only documentary I’ve ever seen that actually explains why there is an “unfinished” pentagram in the street layout north of the White House. The evidence comes from Masonic sources — all of which is very well documented.

There is also a very informative section on President Bush, the Skull and Bones Society, and how the Bavarian Illuminati may have influenced the design for Washington D.C. But most insightful is info. on the book, “Fire in the Minds of Men” by Dr. James Billington (the current Librarian of Congress) who documents the influence of the Illuminati on the revolutionary groups of the 18th-20th centuries. A clip of President Bush saying that his administration has lit “a fire in the minds of men” becomes very telling — once the full context is presented.

Have you ever wondered about the symbols and architecture in Washington D.C? What do they represent? Did Freemasons have any influence? Riddles in Stone addresses these questions. Experts from both points of view provide detailed information that tells a very compelling story about Americas’ capitol. After seeing Riddles in Stone, your view and understanding of Washington D.C. will be changed forever.

While I agree that Secret Mysteries of America’s Beginnings: The New Atlantis - Volume 1 was done well. I must respectfully disagree that Riddles in Stone is “not up to par”. Where are the specifics to that charge? I found Riddles Vol II to be superior in presentation than Vol. I. Watch Riddles in Stone and make up your own mind.

The DVD is a nice way to present these Harold stories and some other very special stories too. The Harold films were made in the 60s and 70s with some nice Jazz scores and interesting presentations. The other books included are Smile for Auntie (my personal favorite), Drummer Hoff and The Mysterious Tadpole. My only regret is that Scholastic didn’t restore these films so they would be crisp and clear rather than grainy.

Looking at the cover, I don’t see where it states this is a WWII collection. Only that it is “War Collection Battlefront Asia”. It appears to me that Amazon made the mistake when they tagged it as a WWII collection. You can’t knock the DVD for that. These are all great movies at a price you can’t beat.

The presentations of the 2057s are a little cheezy, but the content is great. The 2057s DVDs are a great way to help students picture the possible future of the Internet and computer use.

I cannot believe that Carol Burnett would put out anything like this. They sit on a stage and reminisce. Very few outtakes, or showing of best scenes. I recorded the 25th anniversery of CBShow on VHS some years ago, and I thought that was what I was going to get. This is may be a money maker, as so many of us like CB, but this is absolutely false advertising. I unfortunately opened it up and probably will not get my money back, but I warn you, this DVD and Carol Burnett Show stoppers is not worth the postage. I thought this was going to be great christmas presents, no way would I insult anybody by giving them these two.

This two pack set was a BIG disappointment. The old cast spent way too much of the 42 MINUTES!! talking and taking question from the current audience and doing boring musical numbers and not enough of the classic Carol Burnett Show. Both DVDs would have been an interesting Special Feature Bonus track on a complete season DVD of the show. I personally felt cheated and will be careful before buying anything else from CBS/Paramount Collection

Let me begin by saying thank you to Voyager Entertainment for deciding to put this beloved series on DVD. It really brings back memories of my childhood. I’d race home after school to follow the voyages of the Yamato (ok, the ARGO) and her mission to the planet Iscandar.

To those who aren’t familiar with the story, here’s a short summary. In the not so distant future, earth is under attack from a distant planet known as Gamelon. Gamelon’s ‘planet bombs’ rain down on earth, leaving it’s surface a desert wasteland. As a result, people are forced to live in underground cities. But the radioactivity is slowly seeping into the earth, and in one year, all life on earth will be extinct. The planet’s only hope lies in a message from a friend on a far away planet known as Iscandar. Starsha of Iscandar offers the cosmo DNA, a device capable of restoring earth to its former beauty, to the people of earth. The message also includes the plans for an engine capable of exceeding the speed of light. Construction of a new space ship begins, underneath the sunken remains of the WWII Japanese battleship YAMATO. The ship launches and begins it’s 148,000 light year journey to Iscandar, with the hopes of saving all mankind. But, can they cross such a vast distance and return to earth in only 365 days ? Watch the series to find out!

Those who have purchased the first DVD in the series will find an obvious improvment in the menu screens and the addtional options of this disc. However, the menu screens are IDENTICAL to the second disc, with the exception of music and some new still photos. Also, it’s promise of a ‘Virtual tour of the Argo’ is a little misleading, as it is merely a collection of pencil sketches and production cels (artwork) of the ship. I expected a 3D CGI ship to walk around and explore, but no such luck. The picture quality and sound are only slightly better than the VHS versions, but at least it will never deteriorate. I’d have to give 1 star for the disc itself, and the rest for such a great story. Fans will be pleased it’s on DVD, but won’t be too impressed with quality and the lack of extras on the disc.

Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar Part III, contains episodes 10-13 (out of 26) of the first season of the cult-favorite Americanized Japanese Anime series from the early 1980’s.

For the uninitiated, here’s a rundown of the plot. In 2199 Earth was under attack by an “evil” alien race called the Gamilons. The Gamilons bombed earth with “planet bombs” which destroyed the planet and emitted high levels of radiation, thus driving mankind into underground cities. In one Earth year the planet would become uninhabitable. Queen Starsha of Iscandar offers mankind hope in the form of the Cosmic DNA which would cure all mankind from the radiation sickness. She sends Earth a message along with powerful technology that will allow mankind to travel to Iscandar to get the Cosmic DNA. The Star Force is formed to travel to Iscandar to fetch the Cosmic DNA. Their faithful battleship is the Argo, a renovated WWII era navy battleship remade into a Starship. There is just one minor problem though, Iscandar is 148,000 Light Years away. No one has ever traveled that far before. More importantly, the Star Force only has one year to travel there and back for a total of 296,000 Light Years.

Here is a summary of the four episodes included on this DVD:

Episode 10: As they leave the solar system the crew gets a last chance to contact their families on Earth. Plus, Wildstar and Capt. Avatar share a tender moment.

Episode 11: Now out of Earth’s solar system the Argo faces uncertain terrors in deep space as the Gamilon’s attempt to stop the Argo. The first test: The Argo vs. the Desslok mines.

Episode 12: More Gamilon treachery: The Argo vs. the Space Net, a poisonous cloud and the Red Star. Plus, Captain Avatar’s health deteriorates and Nova makes a wish.

Episode 13: The Star Force captures a Gamilon. Plus, a flashback look into Wildstar’s past and the origin of the Gamilon-Earth war.

Continuing its tradition of great DVD extras from Part II, this DVD includes the following special features:

1. A Virtual Tour of the Ago. You can view photos and schematic drawings of all the part of the ship. Pretty cool feature.

2. Yet another shameless plug, this time for Part IV of the series. Can’t blame them for trying though huh?

Overall, this is another great installment in the series. The tour of the Argo was a nice touch and the collection of episodes in and of itself is pure gold.

Summed up, if you were ever a Star Blazers fan, give this (and Parts I & II) a watch. It’s great for a trip down memory lane. If you’ve NEVER seen Star Blazers, give it a try, it’s a cult classic from the 80’s (along with other Americanized anime greats like Robotech, Voltron, Transor Z, etc). The animation may look a little dated, but the storyline still holds its own very well against anything out there today. This series has stood the test of time. Due to limited distribution this show may have slipped by the radar of a lot of people but it caught on like a fire with those who did catch it. Check it out and see what everyone else was screaming about.
