Love these classics, especially Evil Dead II. Was happy to add these to my Blu-ray collection. The transfer is also good.

Otogi Zoshi is definitely one of my favourite animes.

The story centres around Hikaru, an aristocratic girl, who masquerades as her brother and finds herself drawn into the complex political stuggles taking place around her. It’s set in the Heian period, so it’s a time when traditional values of honour and responsibility dominate. The plot begins as an adventure style story, as Hikaru and her companions are sent to search for the `magatama’, magical stones that are believed to have the power to save the Capital.

Don’t let that put you off though! The story isn’t drawn out at all. Instead at only 13 episodes, the plot is fast moving and remains interesting throughout. The characters are also very well developed, Hikaru, as well as the supporting characters around her. Finally the artwork and character designs are really beautiful.

Overall, Otogi Zoshi is quite a short series (it has 6 volumes in total). In case anyone is confused let me just explain: there are two story arcs containing 13 episodes each (making a total of 26 episodes). The first 3 volumes make up the Heian arc, and then comes the Tokyo arc. The arcs are related but self contained- I don’t want to give away anything else about the plot! But on the whole, the series is well thought out and really has a lot of depth.

I really love and definitely recommend this anime!

Just released on Blu-ray yesterday is the recent Easter episode of “Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead.” This is the start of the last four hours of David Tennant’s tenure as the Doctor and is the first time the series is available in HD. It lives up to a Doctor Who fan’s expectations brilliantly!

As writer and executive producer Russell T Davies states in the bonus material, the attitude for the episode was to “go for broke,” and they certainly did. The story follows the Doctor and fellow London bus passengers through a wormhole to a deadly alien world where they must contend with humanoid flies and a swarm of armor plated stingrays. As exciting as the action is, the real draw of the series is the depth of the characters involved. The adventures through space and time provide an interesting backdrop to a story of the last member of a destroyed race who is destined to travel the universe essentially alone forever. Tennant continues to play the Doctor with the same quality that has earned him a National Television Award for Outstanding Drama Performance, and the highlight of this episode is the addition of Lady Christina de Souza, brilliantly portrayed by Michelle Ryan (”The Bionic Woman”). Ryan plays the sexy blue-blooded jewel thief with strength, wit, and an edge of irreverent fun and is a quality match to Tennant’s Doctor. The chemistry between the characters drives the story as the Doctor meets an equal. One of the great aspects of Doctor Who is the strength and intelligence of the Doctor’s companions. These are characters that don’t just go around being saved by the Doctor but actively help him save the universe. This episode continues that tradition in spades.

This is the perfect episode to launch Doctor Who in HD. The alien world features the stark beauty of the Dubai desert, and the panoramas of the desert dunes set against cloudless, arid skies are great in HD. The special effects and alien creatures also look good as do Tennant and Ryan, which can’t be said for all actors in HD.

The bonus material consists of the 60-minute special, “Doctor Who Confidential.” It features interviews with the cast, crew, and creators, as well as behind the scenes footage of the making of the episode. It is quite a story that includes bringing a London double-decker bus into the middle of the Dubai desert, dealing with sandstorms, and creating alien flies. Some memorable moments include the crew sweeping the desert by hand to remove footprints in order to create a “pristine” set. It gives a good sense of all that goes into the production of the episode. Davies gives insight into how the story developed, and the actors share where their characters come from.

All in all, the Blu-ray version of “Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead” is entertaining both visually and dramatically, and the bonus documentary is just enough to add to the experience without overloading the viewer with less than quality material. I recommend it to Doctor Who fans and newcomers alike.

Pardon me, I’m going to nit-pick for a second: not EVERYONE knows about the Doctor, just U.N.I.T and Torchwood, and they’ve always known about him. (He worked with U.N.I.T back in the 70’s, when the Timelords exiled him to earth and he didn’t have access to the TARDIS.)

Now that I’ve revealed my geekiness, I will say that I LOVE the new series even more than the classic series. This is not one of the best (and yes, “Blink” is one of the best ever), but it’s enjoyable, nonetheless.

I was swayed a little and confused by the reviews that people left here about the TV Series DVD vs the 4 DVD Pipi Collection so I bought both the 4 DVD set & the TV series DVD to be sure that I was getting what I was looking for.

And also to hopefullyhelp me to leave for you a clearer more helpful review.

When looking for my version of this Pipi memory I also discovered that many people have their own generation version of the Pippi that was theirs.

I was looking for the one from when I was a little youth born in 1975 and grew up on Vancouver Island and enjoyed Pipi most of my life. I wanted to bring back those “oh so dear to my heart” childhood memories of Pipi… and the 4 DVD box set was it.

If you remember watching Pipi as a feature film and the girls name was Annika than the 4 DVD set is for you.

If you remember watching Pipi as a TV Series and the girls name was Anna not Annika then the TV Series DVD is the one for you.

Having grown up with the 4 DVD box set version as my memories

the “TV Series DVD” to me was disappointing but watchable. They did change Annika to Anna and the children were not as joyful in the dubbing, and the dialogue is certainly different. You are watching the same images but, you do get another storyline perspective of Pipi. You do learn different things about Pippi from the TV Series DVD that you would not have otherwise known with the box set, but it’s nothing necessary to know, it is not money needed to be spent if it is the Annika version you are looking for…unless you have it to spend and would like to give it a try as well or vice versa to those were actually seeking the TV Series version.

As well, the images are pieced together differently to produce a different story in images as well as dialogue.

Maybe this could help clarify…

When Tommy and Annika come to give Pippi the candy box she gives them gifts too. A Harmonica and a ball.

Pipi is looking for her bag of gold gives Tommy a pocket knife (which kinda shocked me) and Anna a hair comb, I think it was.

But honestly, for me the TV Series DVD has been viewed once and is collecting dust on my shelf and does not have the same joy to me as the one I grew up with. The 4 box DVD set.

The 4 DVD Boxed set is definately the English dubbed Pipi I remember in all it’s Glory!!! to the nostalgic soundtrack scratch (that I guess is what could be what is being misinterpreted as smoking voices in the 4 DVD collection reviews) *shrug* Pipi’s big burley papa could have sounded this way, I guess…but, I just thought that it was cuz he was her big strong ” Captain of the South Seas” papa *GRIN*

So whichever of these Pippi releases remind “you” of the Pippi that you wanted to be friends with or even BE! Joy to you and YOUR Pipi memories *smile*

Inger Nilsson IS Pippi Longstocking for an entire generation, and she is as adorable as ever in beautifully mastered DVD collection. I had no idea all four of the Swedish theatrical films were edited together from the television series (though the DVD case claims only the first one was — that’s incorrect).

Picture is GORGEOUS — brilliant colors, razor sharp, little grain, and hardly a spot on the film. The only drawback, besides no extras, is the lack of an option to play the original Swedish lanuage.

Since the TV series contained scenes that were never in the theatrical features, the original American dubbing was presumably not an option, as it would have been incomplete. A brand-new dubbed track was created, this time using British actors. I think the new dubbing is quite good. The children are actually much better actors than the old American voices from the early 70s.

Hen’s Tooth, thank you for finally bringing Pippi to DVD. Please release the rest of this series… and put the Swedish language track on there!

Ok, people this is my humble opinion about the specific anime. So you may ask why this guy gave the show 5 stars…

To begin with and to get out of the way the most obvious matter, I bought the shows when they came out separately and had to pay much-much more than the amount that people will have to pay for the complete collection.

To the story, it is mainly about three women - one a mercenary, one a priest and sort of white magician and one is a thief - and of course the main character Louie and his female friend. The previous mentioned women are adventurers but in order to succeed they need a powerful magician by their side. Well, imagine who this one will be, exactly no other than Louie. Well, the problem with this magician is that a) instead of studying magic he prefers to drink beer, b) instead of using magic he prefers his fists and kicks -especially when they encounter monsters for the first time I was laughing so much that I had started to cry, c) When he opens his mouth he is full of s…, what will make the viewer crack laughing with what comes out of his mouth…

However, as clumsy as he may appear at the beginning - the main reason why the three other women will “hate” him (during the first episodes, something that changes later on); but are forced to stick with him for the above mentioned reason - proofs itself to be as if the creator of the shows wanted to mislead us. Why am I saying this: Because there will be occasions (especially in the first episodes) when Louie says from time to time something so mature, and his magic from time-to-time proofs to be seriously strong, that the viewer will ask himself/herself, is there something more behind his, in many times, ridiculous and funny behaviour? The answer is yes, as it happened with Vash of Trigun… And as the story evolves Louie becomes better and better all the time, in many aspects and ends up to … the world…

(And are not fouled because, the story is not only about adventures but it deals with other aspects that become more clear later on, the adventures are basically something like the starting point of the story…)

To conclude, the story is funny, in other worlds people will crack laughing with what is Louie able to do or not to do, very enjoyable, has action, romance, and the storyline is not so bad (of course, please do not compare it with the philosophical meanings of Evangelion but for its genre as it is…)

Is it worth buying it? Yes, I can honestly recommend this show… Enjoy it…

I was walking around the anime section of a nearby electronics store and this box set caught my eye. I looked it over a bit, and noticed the character design as well as the storyline was created by ‘Ryo Mizuno’. Ryo Mizuno is also the creator of Record of Lodoss War and Legend of Crystania, which are both great animes ‘especially Record of Lodoss War’.

I, of course, already started to have high expectations for Rune Soldier. It is awesome, it’s pretty funny, and less serious than it’s counterparts. The characters all have unique attitudes of their own, and while the story progression can be a little pointless, *find runes to find treasure* the ending is actually surprising, and makes this Anime an extremely wise purchase. I would recommend Rune Soldier to any Otaku.

I like the dvd, but I was hoping for the entire feb 10 2009, all day including the parade

If you get this DVD, make sure to get the most recent one- the inaugural edition (added footage to previous edition)-good bio that was there a couple of years before all the others even came out!

Erik Bruhn and Carla Fracci were one of the most famous dance partnerships, and it’s our good fortune that one of their “trademarks,” Giselle, was preserved for posterity. (I mean, imagine how cool it would have been to have a video of Nijinsky and Karsavina dancing together.)

Both Bruhn and Fracci are better in the first act than the second. Fracci’s radiance and beauty make her an enchanting village lass. You can see why Albrecht would fall in love. And I love the little touches Fracci puts in her mad scene. Instead of letting her hair fall down completely (like most Giselles) Fracci simply loosens one strand of hair from her bun. As she runs around the stage the bun becomes messier and messier. There are also real tears flowing from her beautiful face. Erik Bruhn has a stiff, aristocratic bearing that’s also very appropriate for this role.

Unfortunately, I dont think Fracci and Bruhn are as great in the second “Wili” act. The second act is supposed to be about Albrecht’s redemption. Bruhn doesn’t show much in the way of remorse — he’s still the stiff noble of Act 1. I also own a Giselle with Rudolf Nureyev as Albrecht and with Nureyev you can see the remorse and ardor. The second act also exposes some flaws in Fracci’s technique. At the start of the pas de deux one notices that her developpe is not very solid, for one. Her balances are a bit shaky. But emotionally I also didnt warm to Fracci’s Giselle in Act 2. Fracci chooses to make her somewhat cold and remote, with a ghostly pale-powdered face and stern expression. It’s important to remember that Giselle is *not yet a Wili.* Her spirit is still filled with love. I didn’t see enough tenderness in Fracci’s Giselle.

The thing about this film that *really* bugs me though is the way it was directed. The director Hugo Nieberling decided to be “cute” and shoot the movie somewhat like a music video. Tilted angle shots, weird cut-aways from the dancers to a basket of grapes, and a strange, long-take fixation on the backsides of some horses. It gave me a headache. I thought this nonsense would end in Act 2, but nope. Nieberling cuts away from the dancing of Giselle, Albrecht, Hilarion, and the Wilis to shoot their *reflections* in a pond.

Unfortunately, Giselle seems to be like Odette/Odile in that ballerinas, even the greatest ones, fall into the “either/or” category. Natalia Makarova, for instance, is hauntingly beautiful in Act 2, but she lacks the wholesome joie de vivre to be entirely convincing in Act 1.

I detest this film. What should have been a glorious opportunity to capture Fracci and Bruhn in their signature partnership is ruined by the meddlesome and ignorant direction of Hugo Niebeling and David Blair. Giselle is a ballet; ballet is about dance; dance should be the focus of attention. We should have unobstructed views of the dancers dancing. Instead, we get shots through villagers eating and talking, shots from above, shots from the side, shots through machinery, shots reflected in pools, and so on - absolutely infuriating, unartistic, and puerile. What a shame and a sham! What a colossal misunderstanding of art!

This is the legendary show that was whispered about across America, but only available on Manhattan cable. Al Goldstein (publisher of Screw) is a great host since he wants to elevate these films to legit status, but he’s a dirty old man hitting on his female guests. Imagine Charlie Rose with a raging libido. Even 30 years later, there’s nothing quaint about this show. It would still widen eyeballs on any cable channel - even in this era of Howard Stern and HBO’s “Real Sex.”

This 2-hour compendium of episodes on this DVD features Al’s interviews with “Deep Throat” related figures - director Gerard Damiano, star Harry Reems, supporting actress Carol Connors and Chuck Traynor, the ex-husband of Linda Lovelace. I have seen “Inside Deep Throat,” but this is more entertaining and informative.

While Al doesn’t have a commentary track, he gives us a modern perspective with informative subtitles. There are a few shockers among Al’s tidbits. What would be one? That Carol Connors, who played the nurse in “Deep Throat,” is Thora Birch’s mom. I didn’t know that. (Thora’s dad was erotic actor John Birch.) That fact alone was worth the rental. The producer wanted Carol to be the star of “Deep Throat,” but she couldn’t perform the star stunt so she took the supporting role. Although in her interview, she mentions having added that technique to her repertoire. This is something completely skipped over in “Inside Deep Throat.”

Reems’ interview is amazing for his future vision of what will happen to the porn film industry with the introduction of home video. He is a naked Nostradamus. He speaks of his court case when he was on trial for his involvement with “Deep Throat.” Traynor’s a weird character since as Lovelace’s husband he’s been accused of being beating her. Traynor’s defense is that they had a BDSM relationship. Either way, the man is creepy. Damiano comes off as a filmmaker instead of merely a slimy mobster tool. Although for a former

hairdresser, he has a hideous wig.

People complain about commercials, but on this DVD set, you will be glued to the screen during the breaks. They didn’t advertise hamburgers on “Midnight Blue.” It’s hilarious how they have to hint what goes on at “leisure spas.” Are we really supposed to believe the naked women are merely giving therapeutic massages and baths? There’s a porn theater letting you know what you can get for $2.49 - “Your best hardcore film bargain!” There’s even an ad for “Synth Coke” that can be had by sending your money to a PO Box in Kittery, Maine. Plus you get to see the pool at Plato’s Retreat. This is a well-rounded view of Manhattan’s carnal underbelly.

The video quality is better than what you’d expect from a mid-70s to 80s cable access show. There are periodic glitches, but nothing that ruins the experience. If you’re interested in the subject of “Deep Throat,” this is essential viewing.

This brings you several episodes of the long running New York cable access show created by “Screw” magazine and hosted by Al Goldstein and Alex Bennett. The show had a heady mix of politics and sex this DVD released by Blue Underground.

The packaging is great too. Viz finally figured out that a boxed set shouldn’t take up too much space. Anyone who has the Ranma DVD sets knows they take up a LOT of shelf space, to say nothing for the people who couldn’t wait and purchased the 3-episode-per-disc Inu Yasha DVDs. This packaging is more compact, and really aimed at the people who are serious about anime. Thanks for the trend to reduce boxed set sizes!

The 5 discs have no extras except for the last disc, which has textless opening/closings and a character relationship chart. There is obvious room for extras on DVDs 1-4 since DVD 5 has 6 episodes PLUS the extras. Hopefully Viz will use the space when they get around to releasing Season 2 as a boxed set.

First of all for those writing negative reviwes shame on you!! This is a review on the ENTIRE season not on a few episodes you watched!! You cant get a good perspective that way….please readers…pay those bias remarks no mind and take head of a real review like the one in the spotlight and my own.

This season is awesome!! At first i was unsure of Inu Yasha having only seen a few episodes and not sure what it was about but then having gotten more experiance with it and seeing more episodes i fell in love and got this boxset of the first season. It is a wonderful series filled with what all amimes should have…action, comedy, romance, and great edge of your seat battels!! No one battels as fine as inu yasha and no characters are more deep than what you find in this series. Each character posses a flaw that contributes to the series and their character making it a fantastic anime.

If you are a fan of the works of Rumiko Takehashi then you are sure to fall in love. Inu Yasha i s a series you cannot go wrong with! I have watched A LOT of anime and Inu Yasha is definatly a favorite of mine.

What is alos great about this set that it comes in the original japanese with the english subtitles which are very accurate in their translation. VIZ is def. a well renowed translator and ditributor of goood anime. You can def. trust thier translations. If you dont like japanese then you can watch it in good ol’ english and laugh away as Inu Yasha tries to clobber shippo or tries to understand Kagome. There are no too many special features but you can watch the beginning and ending with out the text which is pretty cool and you get a cast and relationship chart.

This season is great!! Do not listen to those bias twits! They havent seen enough to truly love the series! Before the the ones on this page this box set had a perfect review with 5 stars! Read more reviews if you still need convincing…buut believe me….Inu Yasha is good….no doubt about it.

I saw this movie less than five hours ago, and not surprisingly, Lindsay Lohan has caught my attention with her incredible acting talents, and the way she seems to flow into the characters she plays! Anyway, this is how the movie goes, but I might not be 100% sure at some parts, since I’ve only seen the movie once:

Fifteen year old Mary Cep, (She calls herself Lola, because she says that evers since she was five years old, she knew ‘Lola’ was her true name) and her single mother and two younger sisters move from NYC to New Jersey. As if it isn’t hard enough adjusting to a new suburbal town and new school, a group of those pretty, popular, snobby girls we all love to hate won’t get off Lola’s back from the day she arrives. Luckily, she meets a new friend (I forget her name) who is a very wholesome, good girl, and together, they both embark on adventures of a life time, such as meeting their all time favorite rock star, and even having coffee with him! Lola fulfills her dream of being a famous actress by the end of the movie, and as you can predict, the snobby gang gets backfired in shame and humiliation! It’s a very predictable movie, but it’s entertaining and attention trapping, nontheless. I reccomend seeing it, mostly for a mother and daughter day out, from ages nine to fifteen. Enjoy!

This is the type of movie that belongs on TV. Lindsay Lohan is multi-talented and charismatic as “Lola” who feels like a fish out of water when her mom moves from NY to NJ. She wants to be the drama queen in more ways than one, and engages in making up stories to impress peers in her new town. The drama instructor character is a bit annoying, and the battle for acceptance among teenage girls is becoming a cliche. The music in the film is OK (Lohan sings multiple songs, and this movie features another cover version of Bowie’s “Changes,” recently included in Shrek 2) while the whole storyline about Lola and her not-dead dad and the Sid-Arthur concert are like something from a TV comedy show or TV movie. This movie is aimed at a young audience and it shows. That said, this movie is fine for what it is, but it could have aspired to more, especially at the end where things are wrapped up too quickly.
