“Jezebel,” directed by William Wyler, opens in New Orleans in 1852. The film tells the story of Miss Julie, a strong-willed Southern belle played with passion and flair by the great Bette Davis. Miss Julie’s tempestuous relationship with a handsome gentleman (played by Henry Fonda) is played out in the shadow of both social controversies and a yellow fever epidemic.

“Jezebel” is a superbly produced period piece. The opulent sets and costumes, along with the romantic musical score, contribute well to the overall feel of the film. The black-and-white cinematography is breathtaking; Davis looks positively luminous in many scenes.

The excellent Davis gets solid support from the rest of the excellent cast. But make no mistake: this is Davis’ picture, and she commands the screen from her first scene. Her Miss Julie is a flawed but fascinating woman.

This is a thought-provoking film on many levels. The portrayal of Southern culture as strange and alien to Northerners, the fetishization of Southern womanhood (a “frail, delicate chalice,” as one male character puts it), the references to the abolitionist controversy, and the depiction of the relationships between black servants and white masters are all fascinating elements in the film, and richly ironic. “Jezebel” is one Hollywood classic that remains compelling and, I believe, open to new critical interpretations.

Probably (excluding All About Eve) the finest pictures Bette Davis made were under the direction of the great William Wyler. And Davis never looked better than in this film.

Despite sterling performances from Henry Fonda and George Brent, Fay Bainter and Spring Byington, Henry O’Neil and Donald Crisp, Jezebel is really Davis’ movie as the camera caresses her in close ups time and again, and she rewards it’s attention with an A - class performance.

Davis also made The Letter and The Little Foxes under Wyler’s direction, she loved working with him, his attention to detail, her preparedness to redo scenes over and again until the Master was satisfied (Wyler was known to demand take after take - in some cases, 50 or 60 times - until he got what he was looking for) and of course, the finished product.

Jezebel was made in 1938 as Warner Bros wanted to cash in on the success of the book form of Gone With The Wind, a best seller - and another story of the fall of the South and a headstrong woman whose stubborness costs her the man she loves - and get Jezebel out in the theatres before GTW which was in pre-production, when Jezebel was being shot.

Jezebel is actually set before the Civil War (unlike GTW) in the early 1850’s when the South was a thriving place, and men held great store in their honour, and women well versed in meeting the strictly defined code of dress and behaviour that was so fundamental to life in the Olde South.

For reasons known only to herself, Julie Marsden (Bette Davis) decides to ignore such boundaries and when fiance Preston Dillard (Henry Fonda)arrives to take her to the ball, he finds, to his horror that she has chosen to wear a red gown instead of the white one society expects her as a single woman to wear.

She is humiliated by the reaction of her contemporaries at the ball - especially when Pres refuses to allow her to slink away. And when the dance has been completed he takes her home and politely wishes her “Goodbye” not “Good Night”, thus breaking their engagement.

This may sound crass in the 2000’s, but in 1852’s New Orleans Julie’s scant regard for the manners of the day and her insensitivity to the feelings of others forced Preston to realise a life to her would be one long never ending battleground.

This is the first copy of Jezebel I have owned - because of the poor quality of the film in the past, I decided against buying one.

But the restoration has been superb and has allowed those of us not old enough to appreciate it’s original mint condition on it’s cinematic release back in ‘38 to see this masterpiece the way it was intended.

Bette Davis won an Academy Award for best actress and Fay Bainter won for Best Supporting Actress. Both awards were well earned.

The direction and photography, are wonderful, and despite Warners making Jezebel in black and white, it looks fantastic and gives the viewer a real

sense of the magesty and beauty that was the pre-Civil War south.

The 1940s Hollywood power couple of Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957) and Lauren Bacall (1924-) made four excellent films together:

The 1944 movie is a World-War-II film whereas the others are film-noir flicks. [Incidentally, Bacall played opposite Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe in How to marry a millionaire (1953). The film has an in-joke: the Bacall character says: “I’ve always liked older men. Look at Roosevelt, look at Churchill, look at that old fella what’s his name in The African Queen. Absolutely crazy about him.” Bacall is referring to her real-life husband, Humphrey Bogart.]

The box set “Bogie & Bacall: The signature collection” (DVD 7/06) collects the four Bogart-Bacall movies in a convenient slip case to house appropriately four plastic keep cases but awkwardly four cardboard snap cases. The four films in the box set come in plastic keep cases and are

also available separately. The previous releases were in cardboard snap cases but are still available. The exteriors of the respective snap and keep cases are virtually identical, those of The big sleep DVD varying the most, but only for the “special features” note. The earlier snap cases each have inside a chapter index and additional photo. The newer keep cases lack scene indices. I compared the four DVDs in the snap-case editions with the four DVDs in the keep-case editions. The DVDs for each movie are identical. It is important to note that the DVD for The big sleep is two-sided:

Side A (114 min) = 1946 theatrical-release version

Side B (116 min) = 1944 pre-release version with 18 minutes that were either reshot or deleted from the theatrical release

Side B of the keep-case DVD is not clearly labeled as such.

Warner was remiss in not issuing with the box set a brief booklet on Bogart and Bacall.

In conclusion, if you have the four snap-case editions, they are not outdated, and with reasonable care the cardboard snap cases wear well. However, if you are a Bogart collector lusting for the nice slip case for the quartet of films, get the box set with the plastic keep-case editions and give your snap-case editions to a friend or relative.

This long overdue collection of the four films Bogie and Betty made together is an absolute must have for fans of both Forties flicks and of course the greatest romantic screen-team in Hollywood history. Starting with ‘To Have and Have Not’, which was Lauren Bacall’s debut film, as has been said many times before one can literally watch the pair fall in love on-screen a la Garbo and Gilbert in ‘Flesh and the Devil’. The story is pure Hemingway with wonderful support from Walter Brennan and Hoagy Carmichael among others.

Next came ‘The Big Sleep’, a wonderful (if not baffling!) film noir adapted from the popular novel by Raymond Chandler. Betty never looked more glamourous and sexy than she does in this one.

Their third film togather was the highly underrated ‘Dark Passage’, another noir gem expertly directed by the equally underrated Delmer Daves with superb support from Agnes Moorehead and Bruce Bennet. Bogie plays a framed innocent man just escaped from San Quentin who is aided and abetted by Bacall after winning her trust.

The fourth and unfortunately last film with the pair is ‘Key Largo’, more in the vein of ‘To Have and Have Not’ than the previous two. The best supporting cast of all four films includes Claire Trevor (who won Best Supporting Actress), Lionel Barrymore and Edward G. Robinson in one of his last tough-guy gangster roles. In her book, Bacall describes the experience of making this film as one of the happiest memories of her career with daily afternoon tea served in her dressing room!

The price of this set considering the high-quality of the prints and the marvellous and relevant extras included by Warner’s makes this set excellent value for money. Don’t think twice, get it!

Wow. I first saw Princess Mononoke during its limited theatrical release (twice). Many people have issues with the dub, but this is by far the best dubbed anime ever to be released — I, like most anime fans, normally insist on subtitles, but Neil Gaiman and the cast succeeded in putting real emotion into these characters. The casting of Billy Bob Thornton and Claire Danes might rub some ears the wrong way, but in my opinion the emotional impact is still there regardless of the odd accents. In any case, the Japanese track is included, and it’s phenomenal. As for its content, most arguments about its violence and length can be dismissed by viewing it as a film, rather than as a cartoon. It’s not Disney. The plot is a complex and delicate exercise in shades of gray. Don’t expect Akira or Macross either — it’s really not of the same genre.

The video and audio quality is the sort that you would use to show off your new home theater system. In fact, I found the Japanese soundtrack to be richer and better dynamically balanced than the English track (!). Disney/Miramax really took advantage of the format by including BOTH the Japanese and English opening titles and credits — they are automatically selected depending on your choice of language via an angle switch. Transparent and ingenious. There are two sets of subtitles — one for the English track, and the other is the literal translation of the Japanese (since some liberties were taken in creating the English script).

Disney was originally going to release “Mononoke Hime” without the original language track, which created an outrage among anime fans (who, myself included, signed a massive internet petition which eventually turned the tide). I applaud this decision, as well as the splendid attention to detail. It has made this incredible movie an even better value.

It is difficult to be profound about a movie that has been written about so much. Much of which has been written is rather obvious. Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, although it is an adult oriented film in terms of complexity, it has something for everyone. Princess Mononoke is appealing on many levels because much like other anime features like Armitage III, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira, Princess Mononoke also confronts the issue of technology head on. However, what is unique here is that Miyazaki problematizes the duality of man vs. nature really expanding the problem to man within nature and calling for a sense of co-operation. Again, While other movies like Armitage III, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira are a shade darker than most, Mononoke is laced with hope and reconstruction.

Based on our epistemological framework we are looking for good vs. evil. We are always trying to set things up in a space of binary oppositions. Most viewers are looking to make things “simple.” Juxtaposed against our longing for the simplistic, Miyazaki doesn’t make judgements about good or evil. Miyazkai simply asks many questions. It is really unfair to make any direct comparison but the reason this genre is appealing to a wider audience is that this genre and the movies that are produced within it are more “realistic” than the more common Disney animations offerings.

Another sub-theme is the healing power of nature which is superior to the human need to conquer and control. Susan Napier writes: “At a more complex level, films such as Princess Mononoke actually works to resist and even confront certain public stereotypes, inspiring huge numbers of moviegoers to look at some of the myths of modern Japan in a more critical way.” The movie zeroes in on ecological issues, a far cry from the stereotypes we have of Japan as a giant impersonal machine. Along this same lines, the big four (listed previously) warn us just as much about the march of modernity and technology. In Princess Mononoke, it seems like Miyazaki is setting up a battle between man and nature. My sense is that it is man in nature.

No doubt, this is a complex movie. The interplay between Asitaka, Mononoke and Lady Eboshi is not a simple one. Within the confines of the story, no one character is all bad or all good. All the characters are multi-dimensional and not one character is a caricature. A pivotal character is Lady Eboshi. Lady Eboshi’s involvement with Iron Town is not be dismissed as trivial. How is the viewer going to reconcile Lady Eboshi’s agenda and altruism? The beauty and wonder of Princess Mononoke is not so much that it provides answers but that it poses deep questions. For this reason alone (and there are many) Princess Mononoke can be classified as a work of art and it will survive the ravages of time.

This Canadian production is one of the best horror comedies and period films available for fans hungry for bizarre and madcap entertainment. The current exploitation of the Zombie genre gives place to many different styles and moods, and a good tense and goofy comedy about the legend of the undead and the apocalypse on earth, with all the violence and gore implied, mixed with all-american family values and “pet” ownership responsability in a dystopic society that domesticated zombies for labor work, is always welcome.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fido! Click Here

Weird as it sounds, this movie is pure fun, with no major ambitions that showing a hilarious vision of a 50’s era alternate universe, where domesticated zombies play a functional role in society: They deliver the milk and the mail, and even help in household chores. When the earth passed throught a cloud of space dust and the dead arose from their graves to devour living human flesh, it seemed than all hope for humanity was lost. After the mayhem and chaos unleashed by the living dead, the scientist of the Zom Com company created a special collar that turned the vicious animated corpses into docile beasts, willing to obey some basic commands. This concept of “protection” is, as you can imagine, very fragile and it test one’s imagination over terrible things to come, creating a funny tension about this extravagant new society.

Now, little Timmy Robinson (Ksun Ray) isn’t quite convinced of this menacing urban panorama. This quiet but skeptical young boy spends too much time alone in his bedroom, developping an anti-social behaviour that worries her beautiful mother (Carrie Ann Moss), who just purchased a zombie nicknamed Fido (Bill Conolly) to help with the housework, not knowing that the creature will soon forge a friendship with the boy at the point of becoming a member of the family. Things go out of control when Fido’s collar starts to malfunction and some neighbors begin to die, but the most interesting twist is when the top specialist in zombie control of Zom Com, Mr Bottoms (Henry Czerny) , moves across the street, increasing the complications of the situation and threatening to “block” the human and zombie relations.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fido! Click Here

Speaking only for myself, this movie enchanted me for its simplicity in the vision of a colorful dystopic society living side to side with flesh-eating ghouls, and the melodramatic macabre vision over human-pet relationships, creating a bizarre paralel universe where the very concept of normality is the basis for entertainment. There’s no abuse of the zombie imagery, the focus of the film rests in the freaky and abnormal 50’s atmosphere created, and the performances are superb for this kind of film, destined to become a cult reference in the zombie sub-genre. The opening scene of the educational black & white video for kids in school, is an early highlight for this outrageously funny horror comedy. Higly recommended.

There are people in this world with a demented sense of humor. Those people enjoy films like “Shaun of the Dead’ and find “Lake Placid” to be among one of the funnier films made that year. Then there are people who think the aforementioned folks need psychiatric help. If you are one of group “A” then I would strongly recommend “Fido” for your viewing pleasure. I personally grinned madly through the entire film, from the campy remake of the war footage to the 50’s commercials skewering the elderly. The premise is simple, take all of the wholesome 50’s TV shows and blend them together, remove the dog and add in some Zombies.

I rented this movie knowing that it would either be one of the most disturbing yet hysterical movies I’ve seen, or one of the worst. I was thrilled to discover that I loved it. The acting was brilliant in that 1950’s way, the color, the scenery; everything was exactly what it needed to be to re-make the 50’s with a few zombies added in. The zombies were easy to spot, shambling about in a lovely shade of blue gray doing the menial tasks in life that no one wants to do, like… mowing the lawn, or picking up garbage. Enter Fido, the lovable zombie who the Robinson’s bring home. The Robinsons are a disturbing mess of a dysfunctional family, with a neurotic zombie-phobic dad who has little time or attention for his family, The pistol packing mother (Carrie Ann Moss) who does her best to hold the family together and gain her husband’s attention, the son “Timmy” who is bullied at school, and friendless until Fido enters their lives. Throw in a few neurotic neighbors and a faulty zombie collar and you have an entertaining evening. The most peculiar thing about this film is that (apart from the zombies munching on people when off their leashes) there is nothing in this film to keep it from being rated PG. Not a profanity, no nudity… just wholesome Zombie Goodness.

I just saw this movie about three hours ago, and I have to say it is the best movie I’ve seen in the theater in a long, long time. The starring cast is unbelievable, as Luke Wilson (from ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ and ‘Legally Blonde’), Will Ferrell (SNL funnyman/’A Night At The Roxbury’ star), and Vince Vaughn (from both ‘Made’ and ‘Swingers’) star as three married buddies who begin a fraternity; or something like it. And along with the three stars, there’s a great list of supporting roles and cameos. Including Sean William Scott (Stifler of ‘American Pie’), Andy Dick, CBS Late Late Show’s Craig Kilborn, and Jeremy Piven. And once you get past the long cast list, you have a very funny movie. As the movie starts, you get a glimpse of each of the three stars and their lives; as far as their marriages go. Then as it turns out, none of them are really happy.

And as Mitch (Luke Wilson) gets divorced and moves into a frathouse near a college, they decide to start a fraternity. But it’s not like any old club on campus–for this one you don’t even have to go to the college. Anyway, as the film roles on, you can imagine what (and if you saw the previews, you get the gist of it) they do. They drink, party, and slowly drift away from the lives they have with their wives. And I have to say, out of the three star performances, Vince Vaughn’s was the best. Will Ferrell’s certainly is the funniest, but Vince was great. He sort of carries in the same swagger-style he had in the riotous movie ‘Made’; something that works very well for him. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that the previews don’t even begin to prepare you. It’s definitely not one of those movies that is only funny in the previews. The laughs portrayed there are multiplied by 100, at least.

For those of you who saw ‘Road Trip’ you’ll not be let down with ‘Old School’. And being that it’s from the same director (Todd Phillips), that makes sense. But this one is better. Much better. This time around the director takes it to a whole new level. And the characters are more well-rounded here than they were in ‘Road Trip’. The slogan of the movie says it all: “All the fun of college. None of the education.” I think that speaks for itself.

So I could leave you here saying that if you liked ‘Road Trip’ you will like ‘Old School’; and that’s it. But that’s not true. This is not just a “teen cult” movie–or whatever they’re calling it these days–it’s much much more than that. It’s a hilarious movie with an astonishing/almost too hilarious cast that will keep you laughing even through the closing credits (courtesy of Ferrell and Vince). And it’s not every day I put an exclamation point on my review titles, much less two. I gave the movie 5 stars because that’s what it deserves. It’s a 5 star movie, there’s not getting around it. And again, if you saw the previews and you laughed (or even thought about laughing) then you need to see this movie. There’s so many great lines and so many awesome scenes that I couldn’t even begin to list them; I wouldn’t know where to start. Go see this movie.

This movie is hilarious, and I would give the movie itself 4 our of 5 stars. But there is hardly any difference between the unrated cut and the R rated cut of the movie. When you have topless women on the menu and on the back of the cover, one might be mislead to think there was tons more nudity, when in reality there are 2 brief scenes with any type of nudity (besides will ferrel’s butt scene). This movie could have easily passed the R rating cut, as the unrated thing is nothign but a marketing ploy. I bought the movie for laughs and definately not for sex, but for someone who does, the “UNRATED AND OUT OF CONTROL” part is quite misleading.

His legacy to us; Animal Farm, 1984, Down and Out in London and Paris, Keep the Aspidistra Flying; and so many other good stories is an incredible treasure trove. Here’s hoping that those who watch this cartoon take a few hours, and read these books. Surprisingly easy reading too; George Orwell always felt that to say something clearly was most important. His ideas tend to stick with you. This movie version of Animal Farm is true to the book with the exception of the ending. The live action 1999 movie was not as good as this version and also suffers from a misleading ending. With the movie 1984 the book is better than either movie versions. After reading Down and Out, you’ll never look at a restaurant the same way; and Aspidistra is about selling books - and living free; sort of like the modern drop out from society who still will work an undemanding job that leaves his soul free. Down and Out is similar in this sense. In fact all of these titles have living free as a central core theme. Even when the animal society fails the attempt was noble, and the revolution was inspired by freedom. Even when 1984’s Winston sits arrested in a totalitarian world, he has never the less lived his life seeking freedom, and you get the idea others like him exist there in that world. This DVD is an incredible restoration with listenable sound. Enjoy! God bless you Mr. Orwell!

Okay folks, if you read Orwell’s original, you might be disappointed in the differences in this film, but so what? What movie ever faithfully follows a book 100%?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Animal Farm! Click Here

With that said, enjoy the film for what it is. It’s a really deep and thought-provoking film about how the exploited often becomes the exploiter. In this case, a group of animals overthrow and evil farmer and create a new society called “Animalism” which stresses cooperation among non-humans. The Pigs wind up as the rurlers of this Brave New World and a pig maned Napoleon slowly and subtly beomes their dicator. Even those who are unaware that the story is based on Stalinist Russia will be moved by what happens to Boxer the horse (this scene is pretty faithful to Orwell’s original) and be repelled by the corruption of Napoleon the Pig (aka Joseph Stalin).

Made by a British company in 1955, this was probably the first adult-oriented cartoon feature. CERTAINLY not for the kiddies, as they may find it overtly grim and depressing. Nor is it a “date flick” or film you would invite your buddies over for beer and pizza (unless you want some intellectual discussion afterwards). It’s a real thinking person’s film and I would recommend it for high school and college history classes as a means of sparking discussion on how revolutionary movements often become reactionary.. It’s amazing in modern times how this story closely mirrors what happens in a lot of so-called third-world countries today.

I think I know why this film was so poorly received and tanked at the box office. It was TOO “inside”. Much of this film is a series of jokes about the standard, conventional, formulaic, bombastic action film genre. But the humor was so tongue-in-cheek so often that it probably didn’t bode well with the average action-junkie film fan. “Last Action Hero” made fun of itself as it unfolded, and one would need a certain sense of humor to fully appreciate it on its intended level. I dare say that most folks who went to this film just didn’t “get it”. Too bad for them.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Last Action Hero! Click Here

The major flaw of the DVD is that the film is presented in the god-awful Pan and Scan format. Pan and Scan presentations of frenetically-shot widescreen films should be outlawed, it’s just that simple. You almost get a headache watching this P&S version. The digital pan is so obtrusive and distracting that it can drive one to anger! It pulls you out of the film, to say the least. I like (but don’t really love) this film, and the low price of the DVD makes the purchase a no-brainer. But it is too optically uncomfortable to watch in P&S.

Release it in widescreen and all will be okay.

This is one of those movies that a lot of people that haven’t seen it say, “That movie wasn’t really that good, was it?” but those that have seen it, say, “Why wasn’t this movie more popular?” Maybe it was bad timing, or as some others suggested, just not correctly billed to the public.

Last Action Hero is hard to describe. It’s funny, it’s witty, with lots of those one-liners that Arnold became so popular with, and I loved the way he constantly poked fun at his fictional character as well as his “real” self. Some of my favorite dialogue in the movie is when the kid is trying to convince “character Arnold (aka: Jack Slater)” that he’s actually just a character in a movie. The kid starts asking about phone numbers and how can they possibly all start with 555- in a city with several million phone numbers, when Jack Slater exasperatedly says, “That’s why we have Area Codes…” Priceless. The movie is full of fun stuff like that, and I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is even remotely a Schwarzenegger fan, or who just like campy, yet intelligent, movies. The parody within a parody, and movie within a movie actually worked well in this one.

I thought the movie had a lot of great character performances, and clever scripting, and I think this movie got a bum rap. It’s really a great movie, I’m glad I bought the DVD. The transfer is a little sloppy in places on the one I bought, but since it’s a “Special Anniversary Edition”, I have a feeling that had something to do with it. There’s only a fullscreen version on my DVD, no widescreen, and the camera pans are really noticeable in a few places.

“Cherry Blossoms,” directed by Doris Dorrie, is quite simply, the most exquisitely beautiful and wise film I have ever experienced. It surprised me, going in directions I had not forseen, with a freshness and fierceness of love that is as provocative as it is deeply moving. You traverse with the main character, a man who has lived a safely routine, dull life and live with him a transformative, spiritual journey that is beyond the usual cliches, so often played in Hollywood movies. It is simultaneously raw and subtle in it’s vision of the true wonder of life and the possibility of really opening to the depths of being. I don’t want to give away any of the plot and I would emphasize not even reading the back jacket of the DVD package, nor any reviews that give away any of the plot. I, unfortunately, was not so lucky and the spoilers that are written alter one’s experience of it. Better not to know anything of the plot. Yet even if one does read the plot beforehand, it is still an amazing, soul touching experience. This film was life altering for me and helped me in my own inner work and feeling about life, itself. “Cherry Blossoms” has been a blessing, and I have deep gratitude toward the director, who has obviously tapped into life’s deepest, nurturing wells and underground springs.

“Cherry Blossoms” is a near perfect film. From the moment that images appear on the screen, the audience is hooked. Rudi and Trudi pulls us into their lives immediately and from the moment that Trudi is told by doctors that her husband, Rudi, does not have long to live, we feel as if we are there with her feeling her pain.

We soon learn what kind of man Rudi is and we follow the lives of an older couple who are very much in love. We see how badly they are treated by their children and we learn that this is because they believe that Rudi has suppressed his wife her entire life and did not let her do what she wanted to do. She devoted her life to her husband and children. We see the two in their intimate moments and we realize how much love they share and that Trudi is happy with her husband. The fact that the children think differently is of little importance and in reality is not true.

Trudi convinces her husband to visit their children in Berlin and when they are vacationing on the Baltic Sea, Trudi suddenly dies. Here Rudi realizes that he did not know her very well nor did he take her dreams seriously. This is the focus of the film–death and blaming oneself for not being kind to someone who has just died.

As the story unfolds we see the culture clash in Japan but more important we see Rudi dealing with the death of his wife and his understanding that his life is now very different. The film is sensitive and touching and watching a man dealing with mourning his wife shows the impermanence of memories which can be both tender and funny. The heart of the film is grief and how we are never really prepared for it.

There are stunning images from nature and a lot of symbolism and although the subject matter is quite heavy, it is balanced with family dynamics which are almost farcical and manage to tame the weight of the theme of the film. We watch as love gains momentum and then dies and it is an apotheosis of feeling that is overwhelming. The emotions are beautiful and this is a sublime movie experience. The impermanence of life looms large and the movie was obviously crafted with love.

After a good though not great second season, “Desperate Housewives” got back to full form for its third season. Even though season three wasn’t as good as the first season, it was definitely better than the second season. Teri Hatcher (Susan), Felicity Huffman (Lynette), Marcia Cross (Bree), Eva Longoria (Gaby), and Nicollette Sheridan (Edie) all return for more hijinks on Wisteria Lane (located in the fictional town of Fairview), which saw plenty of the usual ingredients (romance, sex, murder, secrets, etc.) mixed in with its share of sharp comedy, serious drama, and intriguing mysteries that have been frequently featured in its first two seasons. Other series’ regulars who came back for season three include James Denton (Mike), Ricardo Chivara (Carlos), Doug Savant (Tom), Andrea Bowen (Julie), and narrator Brenda Strong (Mary Alice).

After the disappointing storyline involving the Applewhites of season two, creator Marc Cherry and his staff of writers came up with a storyline for season three that was far more intriguing. This starts with a new character for the third season: Orson Hodge (well played by Kyle MacLachlan). As most fans of this show know, Orson was first introduced late in season two, and played a major role in the last episode of the second season, which led to a bigger role in season three. As we began to sense in the season two finale, Orson was someone with a troubled past. This led to him hitting Mike with his car (Mike was suspicious of Orson), and then in the final scene starts having a relationship with Bree (who met Orson at the psychiatric hospital that she checked herself into after thinking she was about to have a nervous breakdown after dumping her son Andrew (Shawn Pyfrom) along the side of a road in the middle of nowhere and daughter Danielle (Joy Lauren) running away from home). In the first episode of season three (which begins 6 months after the end of season two), we start to know some of Orson’s past, and it’s not pretty. But his relationship with Bree brings some joy into his life, and they marry in the second episode. But the journey into marriage turns incredibly bumpy when Bree starts to sense some of the things that have haunted Orson’s past, and some of those elements come back, most notably in the form of his crazy mother, the return of a previous wife (who everyone thought was missing and presumed dead), and the mystery involving a dead woman who Orson had an affair with. All these situations are put to good use and in the end the payoff delivers. Though the end of this storyline comes sooner than anticipated, thanks in part to Marcia Cross’ real-life pregnancy. Shortly after production began on the third season, Cross announced that she was pregnant, which kind of put a little bump in the road for what Cherry was planning for the season. He didn’t want to make Bree pregnant, so he and his crew devised ways so that we don’t notice Cross’ pregnancy in the episodes by having constant close-up shots of her face or putting items in front of her in many scenes. If there was a scene where Bree had to perform a minor stunt, a body double was used (such as a moment where Bree walks up a ladder). And when Cross was ordered to stay on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy (with twins), she invited the crew to come to her home to shoot some scenes. As a result the storyline ended two-thirds of the way into the season, which allowed Cross to go on maternity leave from the show. But no need to fear, Bree makes a triumphant return in the final episode. Thank goodness, because of all these desperate housewives she has become my personal favorite. “Desperate Housewives” slightly lagged a bit without her perfectionist attitude.

Besides MacLachlan, there were other interesting new characters that get introduced. Dougray Scott was superb as Ian, an Englishman who strikes up a relationship with Susan; Josh Henderson is excellent as Edie’s bad boy hunky nephew Austin, who starts a sweet romance with Susan’s daughter Julie; Valerie Mahaffey is terrific as Orson’s previous wife Alma, who appears in the first episode, then disappears for a while before reappearing at the mid-point of the season (much to Bree’s shock); John Lafferty is very good as Gaby’s new beau (and Fairview mayoral candidate) Victor Lang; Kiersten Warren is obnoxiously hilarious as Nora, (first introduced in the season two finale) an incredibly annoying woman who Tom had a one night stand with years ago and got pregnant with his child before he married Lynette, and tried to wreck havoc on the Scavo household by trying to get Tom back; Rachel Fox is cute as a button as Nora’s daughter Kayla, who also happens to be Tom’s daughter; Laurie Metcalf (from TV’s “Roseanne”) is memorably menacing as Carolyn, a friend of Alma’s who suspects Orson murdered her; and the great Dixie Carter (from TV’s “Designing Women”) is a hoot as Orson’s evil mother Gloria.

While new characters popped up in season three, there were some old characters from the previous two seasons that turned up as well. Mark Moses and Cody Kasch returned for a couple of episodes as Paul Young and his troubled son Zack (who actually was Mike’s son); Jesse Metcalfe shows up in an early episode as Gaby’s former gardener (and lover) John; Richard Burgi turns up briefly as Susan’s ex-husband Karl; and Steven Culp returns to narrate an episode as Bree’s late husband Rex (Mary Alice got the day off on that episode).

While there have been so many memorable characters on “Desperate Housewives”, there is a reoccurring character who’s so funny on the show that it would be a shame if I did not mention her. And that character is the old cranky Wisteria Lane neighbor Mrs. McClusky, played to the hilt by Kathryn Joosten. First introduced back in season one, Mrs. McClusky was at complete odds with just about everyone, especially Lynette. But since then she has started to show a softer side that is wonderfully touching. She’s now good friends with Lynette, and helps out the Scavo family by babysitting their kids while Lynette and Tom are at work. The character even had a minor storyline late in season three that involved her late husband. This character has become one of the best things on “Desperate Housewives”, and Joosten is perfect in the role. She’s already won an Emmy for the role (as Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for season one). This character doesn’t appear in every episode of the show, but for the episodes that she does turn up in (whether its one scene or five scenes) brings a smile to my face, which is usually followed by laughter. This character provides some of the biggest laughs on the show.

During its first three seasons, there have been many great episodes of “Desperate Housewives”. But the very best episode of the show so far (in my opinion) comes in season three. Episode 7, titled “Bang”, is the bone-chilling, on-the-edge-of-your-seat episode about that supermarket hostage crisis that affects the residents of Wisteria Lane. This episode has all the elements: some big laughs, high drama, and suspenseful thrills. Plus, Laurie Metcalf gives a great performance in this episode as Carolyn, the crazed woman who literally snaps after hearing some very disturbing news and proceeds to go off the deep end by taking some residents of Wisteria Lane hostage at the supermarket. This episode is an absolute must-see.

“Desperate Housewives” - The Complete Third Season should be out on DVD before the start of the fourth season, and I encourage anyone who bailed out on the show after season two to go out and get it the moment it becomes available. Until then, you’ll have to catch reruns of season three throughout the summer. Or you can view seasons one and two, already out on DVD as well as reruns airing on Lifetime. But one way or another, the third season of “Desperate Housewives” is a winner. And the season ends with another stunning cliffhanger, which will lead into season four.

*** ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ***

Since this review I watched these episodes again on DVD, and I need to bump my original rating of 5 stars down to 4 1/2 stars. Don’t get me wrong, this is still an excellent season of “Desperate Housewives”, but I had a few annoying quibbles about it while watching the episodes on DVD. And all of this takes place in the second half of the season. First off, the character of Ian started to get on my nerves in the later episodes. If you recall, Susan started dating Ian while Mike was in a coma from his accident at the end of season two. Susan fell in love with Ian, but not long after Mike woke up for his coma he wanted Susan back. And every time there was a scene where Mike and Susan shared a moment together and Ian either saw it or heard about it, Ian would constantly complain about it over and over again. I started to get really tired of hearing him complaining about Mike. It’s like you just want to shout out at the character: “quit your whining!” Another setback was the behavior of Lynette’s husband Tom. This (which also takes place during the last part of the season) deals with Tom’s job as the owner of his new pizza parlor. After hiring wife Lynette to be the manager, they start disagreeing on certain things, but this storyline takes a slight detour when a new character is introduced. After Tom suffers a major back spasm that requires bed rest, Lynette hires Rick (played by Jason Gedrick), who’s a master chef. During the course of these later episodes, it seems that Lynette and Rick are attrached to each other, and that drives Tom into a jealous rage. Plus while Tom is at home recuperating from his back problems, he starts having angry fits that I found to be kind of unpleasant. I only wish that the writers could have found a better way to handle these situations. But in the end all the resolutions turn out to be good, and the show moves on. But because these two storylines got a little irritating during the second half of season three, I now give “Desperate Housewives” 4 1/2 stars.

Desperate Housewives is one of the best TV shows (along with Lost and Greys Anatomy) to come out in a long time. In a world where silly reality TV seems to have taken over, it is refreshing to see a quality show out there like Desperate Housewives. Desperate Housewives is one of the few shows that hooks you in, gets you addicted, and takes you on this emotional journey with the characters. It can be a bit far fetched at times, but it is meant to entertain and thats exactly what it does. With a great balance of comedy and suspense this show just makes you want to see whats going to happen next. I give Disney a lot of credit for putting so much in to there DVD sets. According to the press release from Buena Vista Desperate Housewives The Complete Third Season will be a six-disc set which includes all 23 episodes and will come be presented in widescreen format and 5.1 Surround Sound along with the bonus features below.
