About Diesel

Based in Molvena in northern Italy, Diesel was originally created in 1978 to create innovative clothing designs for young people, particularly jeans. Founder Renzo Rosso wanted the company to take chances and he surrounded himself with creative, talented people who, like himself, rejected the slavish trend following typical of the fashion industry. Today, the company views the world as a single, border-less macro-culture, and the Diesel staff reflects this: a cosmopolitan team that creates an unpredictable, dynamic vitality and energy within the company.

Over the years, Diesel has expanded into bags, eyewear, fragrances, jewelry and watches–which it refers to as Time Frames. These timepieces feature highlight bold, durable designs and a dynamic fashion aesthetic that plays with retro stylings from the 1970s and 1980s (including digital watches from that era) to outlandish futuristic designs that are emblematic of the youth of now. Diesel also likes to add a modern twist to classic conventions of timepiece design with wide leather watchbands, oversized numeric displays, and mixing a cacophony of subdials and digital displays on the same face.

Good Toner Cartridge
So far the toner cartridge works fine with no problems. A better deal than buying one from a local store or manufacturer. Only plus would have been a shipping label to return old toner to be recycled.

Bargain price, good performance
Based on a few weeks of use, this toner seems to work as well as genuine Samsung toner — at about half the price. Good crisp, clean printing, all the quality that’s made me so well satisfied with my ML 1710 for years. I agree with another reviewer that recycling provision would have been nice to include, but my city has single-source recycling so that works out alright, too. Since this is a product that’s used over an extended period of time, I’ll keep you posted if any shortcomings crop up. For now I’m well pleased with price and performance.

Good product
Bought it several months ago. Already replaced with another one. No problems at all. Although there are better deals on the Internet for lower price appeared just recently, especially if you want to buy two items in one box. :)

Overlooked but worthy laugh-riot Halloween fare
On my first viewing of Spaced Invaders I made a tragic mistake: I took it seriously. When renting it later just for the heck of it I realized that it’s supposed to be just as goofy and unbelievable as it is. It’s not just a funny movie; it’s a forgotten classic. The first time you see it you’re likely to be distracted by the sappy ET-style friendship between Arianna Richards and a cute little robot-thing, but make no mistake: This movie is not just another Mac & Me.

The story: The Martian Empire is attacking Arcturus under the command of enforcer drones whose inflexibility turns the entire fleet into cannon fodder; a civilian asteroid patrol with five loony Martians and a drone of their own picks up what they think is a cry for help from the embattled citizens of Earth. What they don’t know is that the little town of Big Bean is merely broadcasting “War of the Worlds” on Halloween night, so their efforts to join up with the invasion force after a crash landing get them mixed up with a bunch of trick-or-treaters, a costumed mob of gun-toting rednecks, a farmer obsessed with getting pictures for the tabloids, a new Sheriff out of his depth, and their own enforcer drone.

The dialogue in this film is sharp and wittily delivered, set amongst small but incredibly humorous moments that could be missed the first time through but reward second and third viewings trmendously. Little things from a dog changing film in a camera offscreen to the “Duck!” scene make the movie special, and crazy elements like Vern “Zorro” Pillsbury, turned from zero to hero via a Martian robot slave transformation, keep things nutty. Brian the duck is a show-stealer who actually does remind us at times of Daffy–right down to the accent–while old man Wrenchmuller and his trusty dog Jim try to deal with the Martians in their barn like any cartoon character would: with mousetraps and dynamite.

Forget that it’s silly to have five Martians voiced as celebrity parodies–it’s supposed to be silly. Sit back and watch it with your family this Halloween, and remember not to put tab A into slot B when you assemble your world domination kit. As for me, I can’t wait for this one to hit DVD.

Great, vastly underrated movie for the family
Like the great classic Bugs Bunny cartoons, this movie has humor at different levels. I just introduced this to my 10 year old daughter and 11 year old son. Both enjoyed the movie - busting out laughing quite a few times… and my daughter is not much of a sci-fi fan. The movie kept me laughing despite having seen a few times… the adult-level humor (that is, humor that adults will get simply because of greater life experiences, not baudy or R-rated to be found here) keeps the movie equally enjoyable for adults. For example of the adult level humor, the Martian voices are based on characters of different movies/actors. The Martian pilot, Blaznee, has the voice and mannerisms of Jack Nicholson; the scientist, that of Peter Seller’s Dr. Strangelove. The special effects are surprisingly good for this film. The lack of top 10 actors actually works in the movie’s favor and the actors/actresses play their part well - in fact I would say the producers picked out actors and their skills for the roles’ needs over box-office draw power (an excellent example is Wayne Alexander’s “Vern” character). I had to write this review… the kids are playing this for the 3rd time in 4 days over dinner right now. Good for a rainy day or a late night weekend there’s-nothing-on-and-I’m-bored movie.

You did it again! You put tab A into schlot B, didn’t you?!
“Spaced Invaders” is a priceless comedy! I first saw it when I was 7 and 13 years later it still keeps me in stitches. This has got to be the funniest portrayal of alien invasion ever, with “Men In Black” and “Mars Attacks” being a close second and third. Sure the concepts that the aliens speak English and can breathe unaided on Earth WOULD be farfetched if you think of this movie as strictly sci-fi, but it’s princiapally a COMEDY!! Accept that and everything else falls into place. The sight gags, jokes, performances, and even special effects are stupendous! My favorite unspoken joke is Blaznee’s (the Pilot) sporting of an LA Lakers t-shirt (apparently Mars gets pretty good reception of Earth cable stations like ESPN.) :-P [Sidenote: Whoever it was that said this movie was too scary for kids was either being a smart@$$, recalling a different movie, possesses no spine whatsoever, or severely needs their head examined.]

P.S. For all that own this movie, just for fun try counting all the times Lt. Digiwig says “Come back/Prepare to die Earth scum!”

The Turandot Project Description:

In 1997, Oscar-winning documentarian Allan Miller (THE BOLERO, FROM MAO TO MOZART) embarked on a film project with renowned conductor Zubin Mehta and celebrated Chinese film director Zhang Yimou (RAISE THE RED LANTERN, HOUSE OF THE FLYING DAGGERS) as they joined forces in a production of Puccini’s opera Turandot in Florence. Before the year was out, an extraordinary opportunity arose: to stage Turandot in its original setting in the Forbidden City of Beijing. The outdoor production was an undertaking on an epic scale–including the expansion of the site with the construction of huge new sets, the creation of breathtaking hand-sewn Ming Dynasty costumes and the adding of hundreds of soldiers and local extras, to lend a lavish authenticity to the staging. A fascinating chronicle of an unprecedented cross-cultural collaboration, THE TURANDOT PROJECT combines the pageantry of this opulent opera production with a spectacular cinematic portrait of the struggles and triumphs of Zubin Mehta and Zhang Yimou to mount their production in this most historic venue of China.

Customer Reviews:

My mother’s favorite Puccini
Although “Turandot” was always my mother’s favorite Puccini opera and, as a result, I grew up listening to it, I never quite understood it as I understood the other “simpler” works like Butterfly and Tosca (my personal favorite). But when I saw “The Turandot Project” on the Sundance channel this morning, all of a sudden everything became clear and I rushed to the computer to find the DVD.

While the production itself is spectacular (300 extras, 50 ballet dancers, a contortionist from the Beijing Opera, and 300 soldiers from the local Chinese Army garrison), the documentary of what was involved in making the production actually happen is fascinating. I counted at least four languages (English, Italian, and Mandarin for most, but let’s not forget the Viennese sound director with his own Mandarin/German translator) and a nearly unlimited number of egos.

At the end of the documentary, while we hear Puccini’s gorgeous music, the film cuts between the the actual production and the earlier shots of the various problems and rehearsals. I swear, watching that, I got actual goosebumps.

In all, the production is the culmination of an astonishing effort dedicated towards one goal: the production of Puccini’s masterpiece in its perfect setting, the Forbidden City. The production is a triumph of human dedication and cooperation and makes you think that maybe, in the end, there’s hope for us all.

Multicultural music project management
Memorial of a historical musical event.
The tremendous challenge of getting Chinese,Italians and experts from other nationalities to come together in understanding to create a spectacular version of Turandot with authentic Ming dynasty costumes, scenery in an ancient Peking theatre is portrayed in an exciting way by the same director who won an Oscar for “From Mao to Mozart” with Isaac Stern in 1979.

The Italian choirmembers stop singing when the clock strikes 5 (union rules). The Chinese director is worried that the Chinese stagehands (who have had no exposure to western opera) will make a mistake in moving the complicated set and make China look bad in the eyes of the world.

The costumes are fantastic, the singing and acting great (The suicide scene of Christina Gallardo as Liu was brilliant.)

But most interesting of all are the transcultural communication issues. Recommended viewing for project managers, in whatever branch.

Interesting Topic, Dull Documentary
There are so many facets to the events being described here that it’s almost incredible how dull this documentary is. While they mention in passing that there are tensions between the Chinese government and the director of the opera, we never see any of that play out and it’s never mentioned again. Similarly, we’re told that this is a huge cultural event for China, to have such a lavish production of Turandot performed in Beijing, but we don’t really see that reaction, aside from two or three very brief comments near the end.

Then there are the tensions amongst the people putting the production together. Again, these are casually brought up, but there’s no follow-through.

Instead of following any of these potentially fascinating threads, the makers of the documentary instead show us footage of people walking through China, an opera singer complaining to someone we’ve never seen before that the hat she’s supposed to wear looks stupid, etc. The whole documentary seems to lack any kind of focus.

Several weeks ago, I saw “Moon Over Broadway” which is a documentary about the making of a musical (starring Carol Burnett). While the staging of an opera in Beijing is much more potentially interesting to me than a musical with Carol Burnett, “Moon Over Broadway” was a far more successful documentary than “Turandot Project” because it actually managed to get behind the scenes and to develop some of its ideas. There was an actual story taking place and we got to know several of the people involved in the production and we were able to experience their frustrations and conflicts. By the end of “Turandot Project,” by way of contrast, I felt like I had nothing invested in any of the people involved and had no real sense of who they were or why they were there or why this was important.

“Turandot Project” isn’t really worth your time unless you’re a huge opera fan and willing to sit through a lot of pointless footage that’s been slapped together at random.

From The New Yorker
In 1997, the conductor Zubin Mehta and the film director Zhang Yimou collaborated on a new production of Puccini’s last opera, “Turandot,” in Florence, and then transported the entire affair to Beijing, where they restaged it in a courtyard within the Forbidden City. Thousands of people all over China embroidered authentic Ming-era costumes, and Zhang filled the stage with dancers in blazing color and costumed soldiers. “Turandot” can take this kind of inflation-it’s a story of inhumanity that depends on public triumphs and humiliations. Most of Mehta’s talk about “authenticity,” however, is amusingly beside the point, since Puccini was about as Western as they come, and “Turandot,” for all its “Chinese” orchestration, stays well within the conventions of Italian opera. The documentary filmmaker Allan Miller caught both the rehearsals and the finished productions. -David Denby

This is one of my all time favorite books!
This book has had a huge, positive influence on my life. I read this book right before I quit my job to stay home and Amy Dacyczyn helped convince me I could do it. But if you are contemplating reading this book, be warned: it is highly addictive and potentially life-changing.

I was already fairly frugal before I read The Tightwad Gazette. My husband and I used cloth diapers, shopped at thrift shops, bought secondhand and had only one car. Many of these actions came from our concern to live lightly on the earth, but had the side-benefit of saving us money. But when I read this book, Amy made me see how wasteful I was being in other parts of my life–throwing money away needlessly by spending too much on groceries, overinsuring my car, and overlooking the wealth of things that can be purchased very cheaply at yard sales. After I read this book, I immediately chopped about $100 a month off of my grocery bill, and IT WAS EASY! And I spent less time running back and forth to the grocery store and more time at home enjoying my family. I was so smitten with this book, that in the first few months after I read it, my husband got really sick of hearing about it. And he was a tightwad, too!

For the last few years, I’ve been able to use some of Amy’s recommendations for saving money, but I really had only scratched the surface in what I could accomplish. I was able to stay home and we were doing okay financially, but just okay–not great. Then earlier this year my husband and I got a wake-up call. Throughout our marriage, we had always managed to save money, even if only $100 a month. Our wake-up call came when we realized that for the first time in our marriage, not only were we not saving money anymore, but our hard-earned savings were slowly being depleted. Consequently, my husband was feeling a lot of pressure to work harder and harder, spending more time away from home and making our family life more strained.

Re-enter the Tightwad Gazette. When I realized that we were losing money, I went into TOTAL frugality mode. First, I used Amy’s suggestion to list everything we were spending, then I went over our spending with a fine-tooth comb and looked for places I could cut (fewer long distance calls, cutting back further on groceries, etc.). When I looked at the numbers, I estimated that we could be saving $500 a month. And we live near the federal poverty line! And we pay for our own benefits! Then I reread Amy’s book (for about the 4th time), and this time I TOOK NOTES! When I was done, not only did I feel empowered, but I had 4 pages of ideas for new money-saving ideas to try–everything from new recipes to energy-saving strategies. I also realized some mistakes I had been making that Amy discusses at length. First, I had failed to realize that desparate circumstances call for desparate action. Second, I had been justifying a certain amount of wasteful spending on the basis of how hard we worked and how much we deserved it. Third, I had failed to set clear financial goals. Amy talks about the need to set goals repeatedly, and she is right. My new goal was to save $3000 by the end of the year. With this new goal in front of me, I felt completely motivated to start saving money.

To make a long story short, in the 2 months since I have become (in Amy’s words) a “Black-belt Tightwad,” my family has saved approximately $900, with no dramatic difference in our lifestyle. And lest you think that the lifestyle that Amy promotes is one of drudgery and deprivation, think again. As Amy will tell you in these pages over and over, the life of a tightwad can be full and complete. My kids wear designer clothes (albeit second-hand). My home is filled with nice stuff (most of it bought at yard sales or ‘treasure-picked’ from the curb). My family eats healthfully–lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, many of them organic, with delicious home-baked goodies thrown in. And we even go out to eat from time to time (although not as often as we once did). Most people who would see my family on the street or visit us in our home would be shocked if they knew how well we do with so little income. Plus I have the added benefit of sleeping more soundly at night, not worrying that we will run out of money.

This book is for non-tightwads, too. I’ve recommended it to some friends who are spendthrifts, and even they have loved it. So if you are at all interested in saving money or living a simpler, saner life, by all means read this book. But make your first truly tightwad move and don’t buy it–go to the library first and read a copy. Amy even recommends that you do this. Then, if it is worth it, you can go ahead and buy it.

Her children are lucky
I am disturbed by some of the reviews that cruelly state that Mrs. Dacyczyn’s children are being shortchanged–one reviewer called her childrearing philosophy child neglect and borderline abuse.

I think the Dacyczyn children are very blessed to be raised in a family where worldly values are put in perspective and the important things in life are stressed. My daughter and I are reading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books together, and while reading the Tightwad books, I was struck at how many parallels there are between the beloved classic books and the Dacyczyn family’s values.

Children do not need fancy, expensive new clothes to develop properly. There is nothing wrong with used clothes, in the first place. Secondly, Mrs. Dacyczyn makes clear her clothing philosophy in a little article about how she spoke with all her children about what they wanted to wear on the first day of school. She spent a good deal of time planning this with them, and actually made a special item (a vest, I think) so they would feel special. She didn’t have to throw money at them to show that she loved them. She spent time talking and listening.

As far as the bath issue… hello, children do NOT need a bath every single day. Where did that myth come from, anyway? It does not jeapordize their health if they don’t get scrubbed every night. Most of the people I know give their kids a bath “as-needed” during the week, and then on Saturday night so they’re extra-clean for church on Sunday morning. Baths are more frequent in the summer, when they’re outside getting dirty, and less in the winter (sometimes only once a week in our house) when they spend all their time inside, and I’d rather not send them to bed with wet hair. It’s not so much a matter of frugality as it is common sense.

And the reviewers who made snide remarks about nutrition… holy cow. These kids get organic, garden-fresh produce all summer, and home-canned and frozen produce (also organic, and no preservatives) the rest of the year. Their consumption of ready-made snacks (laden with fat, sugar and preservatives) is sensibly controlled. They get balanced meals from all the food groups (Mrs. Dacyczyn lists a week of her family’s menus for us to look at).

I would think that with all the problems that have come to light on child obesity this last decade, that people would understand that we need to pay attention to our children’s nutrition. Keeping potato chips as a special treat (and telling the kids that, if they want something not on the family menu, they have to purchase it themselves) is not abusive. It is tender care and regard for a child’s health.

As far as showing love: her descriptions of the children’s birthday parties are fantastic. The pirate ship birthday theme is wonderful, and her set-up in the yard of an actual ship play-area was awesome. How many parents take their kids to a party store, let them choose the newest popular cartoon character and get party hats, paper goods and “favors” in that theme (and then go buy a tasteless cake with vegetable shortening/powdered sugar frosting at the grocery store)? Is that more loving than what the Dacyczyn family does?

And I would like to point out the snobbery of the reviewers who turn up their noses at dumpster diving. In this throw-away society, it is shocking what people toss in the trash. When my husband and I still lived in our apartment complex, he would watch the dumpster at the end of the month, when people were moving out. One girl threw away boxes of new clothes -tags still on!- and even a mason jar full to the top of coins. Too much trouble to take it to the bank, I suppose. I still wear her pajamas and shorts, use her hand-formed iron wok, and sharpen my knives on her very expensive sharpening stone. We also still use the lovely, unique folding wooden chairs our neighbors threw away.

Someone bragged that her house is not full of other people’s castoffs. I am willing to bet that a house full of cast-off antiques and high-quality yard sale finds is more interesting and beautiful than one furnished by walking into Wal-Mart (or even Pottery Barn) and simply running up a credit card.

There are also too many sniffing comments about having six children. Since when is it anyone’s business how many children a family has? Particularly since the Dacyczyn family isn’t asking anyone for a handout. Large families are full of joy and love and they get too many unsolicited comments. I know someone with a large family who is often told in public by complete strangers, “I’m glad they aren’t mine!” To which she threatens to one day respond, “They’re glad they aren’t yours, too.”

Mrs. Dacyczyn never says to her children, “You’re not worth a new dress or a new book.” She shows how much she loves them by giving them the important things of life. She is also preparing them for adulthood in the best way: showing them the difference between wants and needs. They will know that money is not what makes us happy, and that buying “things” is not as important as spending time with people. They will be well-adjusted, happy adults.

It made me sad to read the mean reviews. If you want to say the book didn’t help you save money, fine. But let’s not make ourselves feel superior by making cruel comments about this family.

Great. Some of the negative reviews are disingenuous
This book is an inspiration to help you save money. Kathryn F says “I won’t dumpster dive, reuse meat trays or save dryer lint.” Amy D. doesn’t do any of this;she dove a couple times as part of her research for an article. She doesn’t give out money advice like “buy gov’t bonds” as others said. As for mealtimes, I agree with her “old fashioned” method of feeding kids, not letting them control the family diet. What Amy DOES do is give examples of ways to save, and articles on calculating real costs of things, etc. Her writing will inspire your own creativity regarding saving money, appropriate for your own situation. The fact that they saved the cash they did, living in expensive New England is amazing, believe me. She outlines options for you, it’s up to you to decide what’s best - are you truly desperate financially, just want to cut back a bit, or somewhere in between? Personally, what this book has done for me is that it has shifted my values a bit, I am far less interested in having “things”, and more into enjoying life through direct experiences - hiking in the mountains, being outdoors. I’m not into the domestic scene like Amy is. But the beauty of the book is you can adapt the advice. Please check it out for yourself, even at the library. But I bet you’ll want your own copy.

On Halloween day, Hank comes to school dressed as a table in an Italian restaurant. Nick McKelty, the resident school bully (dressed in a total blood-and-guts costume), thinks Hank’s costume is wimpy and that Hank wouldn’t know how to be scary and gross if his life depended on it! So Hank decides to create the scariest haunted house ever, and plans to invite McKelty over and show him what scary really is. The only problem is that Hank’s dog, Cheerio, is scared of Hank’s haunted house. So scared, in fact, that when Hank tries to find him, he’s nowhere in sight! Have Hank’s Halloween hijinks gone too far?

Hank Zipzer is GREAT!!!
The entire series of Hank Zipzer books is GREAT!!! My son can’t get enough of them. They are a wonderful read, especially for any child who suffers from a learning challenge. They are easy to relate to and help to build self-esteem for children who have learning challenges and help others to understand how the world works for them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

more of a good kids series
my 11 yr old 5th gr daughter is a devoted Hank Zipzer fan; she had read thru #7 & wanted the next few in the series for her Dec bday/Christmas; these are quick easy reads for her, but very enjoyable; I even like when she reads out loud to me; they help her better understand her Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) & learning disabilities (LD) in a fun way; Henry Winkler turned his negative childhood experiences into a positive thing for his children & ours

Frightfully Funny
In this adventure Hank finally has had enough of Nick McKelty. The school bully has gone too far. During the school Halloween Parade, Nick mocks a kid in kindergarten, and makes everybody laugh at Hank but the topper is he mocks Hank’s younger sister and her friend Robert. With the help of grandfather he comes up with a plan to create a haunted house and get revenge on McKelty.

With the help of his best friends Ashley and Frankie, they set about transforming the family living room into a haunted house of horrors. They test it on two other schoolmates and McKelty arrives just before their parents close up shop. But will their plans and work really scare the school bully? You need to read this to find out.

This is a great series about a young boy with a learning disability. It really captures the experiences of someone with those struggles. My only complaint about this book is the first inconsistency in the series and it is a big one. On p.15 Hank says his books have never gone above the C’s range, yet in book 7, Help! Somebody Get me out of Fourth Grade!, he achieves an A+ for his presentation. He says his grades have only ever travelled to C-ville and parts south. It is a great line but doesn’t match the other books. It’s a little disappointing but not enough to stop me reading the book or the series.

Perfect Gift for Trekkers and for their Supportive Loved Ones
Erdmann has put together a brilliant guidebook of all things Trek that hard-core Trekkers will love to pour through, and their loved ones can use to help understand their passion a bit better. A synopsis of every episode of every series is included - as well as each movie - providing a quick reference guide when you get in an argument over what the name of that lioness communications officer was in the animated series, or what episode introduces us all to Species 8472. It also includes a list of the essential episodes for each series, info on key characters and alien species, and interesting trivia. My first browsing of the book brought back great memories of watching the shows, taught me some things I didn’t know, and will surely come in handy when I try to explain the difference between a Vulcan and a Romulan to my husband.

Okay as an episode guide
This book is little more than a basic episode guide for all Star Trek series and includes the movies as well. There’s some trivia in the book but it’s all fairly bland. If you’re looking for an episode guide for every Trek series, this is for you. Other than that, there’s little to recommend about this book.

A Great Thing For New and Old Fans To Have
I have been a Star Trek fan for only five years, but I still don’t know everything there is to know about Star Trek. The franchise is so huge, it is nice to have this book as a reminder on certain things. This book gives you the basics, but also has a nice episode guide and some great pictures. It also gives a top 10 must see episode list for each series, most of which I agree with. With that, it also tells you what the worst episode of the series is. It’s all opinion when it comes to that, but the chosen episodes are what most Trekkies would agree with.

Another cool thing about the book is that it gives 3 episodes that it recommends you watch that focuses on all of the main characters. For example, after the bio of Picard, it gives you 3 must see episodes where the main focus is that character. It is full of recommendations, obviously for new fans that don’t know what to watch.

That’s not all, it also has a section that tells you about all ten movies and pics of the movie posters. Overall, I would say that this is a very cool book that Trekkies new and old will enjoy. From the cover, you wouldn’t think this book would be that fun but it is. I even have someone else wanting to borrow it after I told them about it.

About the Author
Terry Erdmann has written a number of Star Trek books, amongst them Action! and The Tribble Handbook, and worked with J.M. Dillard on the pictorial history of Star Trek, Where No-one Has Gone Before. As a Hollywood publicist the many hit movies he has worked on include Aliens and Cocoon.

STAR TREK

79 hour-long episodes, 1966-1969
“Wagon Train to the Stars”

SERIES PREMISE

A few hundred years in the future, a heroic captain and his crew explore the galaxy in a really fast spacecraft known as the Starship Enterprise. The crew’s standing orders from Starfleet are recited by the captain at the beginning of each episode:

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

THE SHIP

The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 is an interstellar spacecraft with a crew complement of 430 men and women. The ship is powered by warp-drive engines that allow it to travel many times faster than the speed of light, covering great distances within a practical time frame. (You don’t really need to know this to enjoy the show; just assume you’ll be visiting an average of one planet per week.)

Because the ship is large and a bit ungainly, the Enterprise never lands. It wasn’t designed for it. Whenever the ship arrives at a strange new world, it stays in orbit while a “landing party” either pilots a small craft down to the surface or uses the transporter to “beam” there (this will be explained later). The transporter, like warp drive, is a great time-saving device; Starfleet clearly employs a lot of efficiency experts.

THE MAIN CHARACTERS

JAMES T. KIRK (William Shatner), captain

Risk is our business. That’s what this starship is all about. That’s why we’re aboard her.
— “RETURN TO TOMORROW”

Kirk is the quintessential Starfleet officer, a man among men and a hero for the ages. His adventures are legendary. He has earned the admiration of his peers, the grudging respect of his opponents, and a chest full of commendations for valor. Cunning, courageous, and confident, Kirk is renowned for his ability to think outside the box, manipulating seemingly impossible situations like a master chess player. If he has one flaw, it is his tendency to ignore Starfleet regulations when he feels the end justifies the means. Kirk’s unique style of “cowboy diplomacy” has served him well in countless close encounters.

Kirk was born on Earth in Iowa. He proved a very serious student at Starfleet Academy, remembered by a classmate as a “stack of books with legs.” As a Starfleet officer, he is a study in contrasts. He depends on the state-ofthe-art twenty-third-century technology that surrounds him but prefers resolving difficult situations with a hands-on approach — bareknuckle brawling or bamboozling sophisticated alien computers with his glib tongue. Kirk openly deplores humankind’s ancient instinct for war and killing but has a deep-seated distrust of apparent peace and tranquillity. He dreams of “a beach to walk on” with a beautiful woman but firmly believes that man wasn’t meant to live in paradise. Although Kirk has quite a reputation as a ladies’ man, no woman has ever come between him and his career; his passion for the Enterprise always comes first. His most serious relationship was with Edith Keeler, a forward-thinking but ill-fated social worker whom Kirk met when he traveled into Earth’s past.

Key Kirk Episodes
• “The Enemy Within”
• “Court Martial”
• “Shore Leave”
• “The City on the Edge of Forever”

“You keep wondering if man was meant to be out here — you keep wondering and you keep signing on.” — Kirk, “The Naked Time”

SPOCK (Leonard Nimoy), first officer

I have a human half…as well as an alien half, submerged, constantly at war with each other…I survive it because my intelligence wins out over both, makes them live together. — “THE ENEMY WITHIN

The first Vulcan to enlist in Starfleet, Spock (he has a first name, but it’s unpronounceable) is the Enterprise’s science officer as well as its first officer, and the only man Kirk trusts to second-guess him on all major decisions. Why? Well, for one thing, Spock is probably the smartest man in Starfleet — quite possibly the galaxy. His cerebral abilities are so renowned that they once inspired a group of aliens to invade the Enterprise to steal his brain. (He got it back.)

Like must Vulcans, Spock worships at the altar of logic. His decisions are always “flawlessly logical.” Kirk feels safer about Spock’s guesses than he does about most other people’s facts. That’s because Spock doesn’t let emotions cloud his judgment. In fact, Spock has no emotions. Or so he says.

Spock is only half Vulcan. His father, Sarek, was a Vulcan diplomat; his mother, Amanda, a human schoolteacher from Earth. He was raised on his father’s world, where the inhabitants are trained from birth to lock away their feelings and lose the key.

Growing up, Spock was torn between the stern discipline of his father’s Vulcan teachings and the free-range emotions of his mother. The Vulcan children tormented Spock at school. His father didn’t speak to him for eighteen years because Spock opted to join Starfleet rather than attend the Vulcan Science Academy. And Spock’s fiancée, T’Pring, spurned him at the altar in favor of a more traditional Vulcan.

Spock is married to his career, which is just as well since he claims to be immune to the charms of women. He has experienced romantic yearnings only under unusual circumstances triggered by alien spores and Pon farr.

Key Spock Episodes
• “The Naked Time”
• “This Side of Paradise”
• “Amok Time”
• “Journey to Babel”

LEONARD “BONES” McCOY (DeForest Kelley), chief medical officer

He’s dead, Jim. — “THE ENEMY WITHIN”

Given half a chance, Leonard McCoy is far more likely to explain what he isn’t than what he is. He’s not a bricklayer, psychiatrist, escalator, engineer, coal miner, or moon-shuttle conductor. He’s “just an old country doctor” who happens to know a lot about twenty-third-century medicine. Born in Georgia, on Earth, McCoy still retains a touch of the charming Southern gentleman about him, which balances out his often cantankerous nature.

More than a little old-fashioned, McCoy isn’t convinced that humankind should be gallivanting across the galaxy in a warp-powered starship. He loathes having his atoms “scattered back and forth across space” via the transporter, and he is disturbed by the fact that neither computers nor Vulcans have a clue about compassion. As might be expected, Spock’s slavish devotion to technology, logic, and statistics drives McCoy crazy, and he’s constantly trying to punch holes in Spock’s cool Vulcan reserve. However, Spock is just as good at getting a rise out of McCoy, playing the good doctor’s emotions like a concert pianist.

If Kirk represents the soul of the Enterprise and Spock the mind, then McCoy is undoubtedly the heart. The good doctor’s insight provides the captain with a touchstone to his own humanity. He’s the guy Kirk seeks out when he needs to let his hair down, generally over a drink.

Key McCoy Episodes
• “Shore Leave”
• “The City on the Edge of Forever”
• “Friday’s Child”
• “For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky”

“I signed aboard this ship to practice medicine, not to have my atoms scattered back and forth across space by this gadget.” — McCoy, “Space Seed”

MONTGOMERY SCOTT (James Doohan), chief engineer

I can’t change the laws of physics.
— “THE NAKED TIME”

Montgomery Scott — known to one and all as “Scotty” — is the ship’s miracle worker. He’s also its chief engineer, but those titles might as well be one and the same when you have a fellow like Scotty keeping your starship ship-shape. There’s no one you’d rather have at the controls of the transporter when you’re ready to beam up.

Born in Scotland, Scott retains a bit of the highlanders’ Gaelic lilt in his dialect. He refers to the ship’s engines as his “bairns” (children) and is prone to calling junior personnel “laddie” or “lass.” Scott’s affection for the Enterprise may be a bit stronger than his devotion to the captain. He once started a brawl because someone likened the NCC-1701 to a “garbage scow.” The fact that earlier Kirk was described as “a swaggering, overbearing, tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood” hadn’t bothered him.

Although he enjoys an occasional nip of Scotch, Scott generally prefers an evening with a technical manual to a night on the town.

Key Scott Episodes
• “Wolf in the Fold”
&#!49; “The Trouble With Tribbles”
• “The Lights of Zetar”

“Fool me once, shame on you — fool me twice, shame on me.” — Scott, “Friday’s Child”

SULU (George Takei), helm officer

Richelieu, beware!
— “THE NAKED TIME”

Sulu is a Renaissance man, counting among his passions botany, fencing, ancient handguns…and a subconscious desire to emulate Alexandre Dumas’s swashbuckling literary hero D’Artagnan. He’s the ship’s main helmsman, which essentially means he’s the driver.

Key Sulu Episodes
• “The Naked Time”
• “Mirror, Mirror”

UHURA (Nichelle Nichols), communications officer

Hailing frequencies still open, sir.
— “THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER”

As the ship’s communications officer, Uhura spends much of her workday sending transmissions to Starfleet Command and responding to Captain Kirk’s requests to open hailing frequencies to new life and new civilizations. Still, there are probably worse jobs on a starship, and Uhura is the only female permanently assigned to the bridge. Her name means “freedom” in Swahili. When she’s off duty, Uhura enjoys singing for her fellow crew members.

Key Uhura Episodes
• “The Changeling”
• “The Trouble With Tribbles”
