A good book for the honest5
No one likes to admit they have an anger issue. The truth is, in the world we live in today, their is anger all around us. I think that the stigma of anger is much like that of drug abuse, alcohol abuse, AIDS or any other “socially unacceptable” life trait. It is not something that we talk about or accept. Dr Gentry shows in this book how even a small amount of anger can take over your life if you let it. His easy steps that makes sense allow people to feel like they are normal. You don’t have to be an angry person to read this book. It is based on practical life circumstances and I have found that it has helped me in not only a professional capacity in dealing with the general public, but those I work with, my spouse and frustration about the world we live in. I recommend this book to anyone who can be honest enough to admit that there is anger in every life and would like to deal with it through positive step-by-step applications.

Anger Management For Dummies4
Really good book. Very helpful, although some of the sections don’t pertain to me at all. However, I realize author has to cover a general and wide spectrum of lifestyles, living arrangements and situations, so I give this book an A-. It actually has suggestions and recommendations that most people would be able to apply on a daily basis.

Beat Anger Management Book5
Probalby the best Anger Management book I have read. The Dummies’ straight to the point writting is funa and easy reading. I would highly recommend to anyone dealing with anger issues. It has helped me personally at home, work and play!

Businessman Noah Falcon was gorgeous.

This fact had not escaped Tricia McBride, even though she was busy caring for his four children. In fact, since she started working for him, the attraction between them sizzled like water hitting hot oil.

Yet though she was living steps from his bedroom, relations between Noah and Tricia had to stay strictly business. He was her boss, after all. Plus, in three months, she was moving to another city. So what if her feelings for the sexy single dad–and her attraction to him–grew stronger every day? She was leaving.

But four adorable, scheming children had other plans….

Can Noah marry Patricia?5
Next month’s release of TSDVW just adds to Susan Crosby’s list of good books! The Wives for Hire series is wonderful!

Noah Falcon has been alone with his 4 children, twin 12 y.o. girls and twin 9 y.o. boys since his wife died 3 years ago. Well he hasn’t been alone he’s had a nanny/home school teacher, a cook, a gardener and anyone else he needs. He’s treated the nanny/teacher as an employee, they were young women just graduated and thrilled for the chance to teach these wonderful children, maybe a little too wonderful. Noah is standoffish to everyone but his brothers and he can be real bossy with them–he is the oldest of the three and feels he raised them as his father and his wives were always working to make his father’s business better but it really didn’t do it. Noah took over and made it what it is today with the help of David. Noah has issues as you can see

Noah’s brother, David with the children’s help has hired the newest nanny/teacher without Noah even knowing. Tricia McBride is the answer to Noah’s problems but she is a teacher first so he must participate in life with the children–Tricia is going to make sure! Tricia wants Noah and his children to be a family. Unknowingly maybe it’s the one she’s never had. We learn each child and their personalities and how Noah deals with them–he does OK but Tricia knows it could be better!

Noah and Tricia dance around each other for some time before they face their attraction but what can they do about it? With everyone “helping” Tricia and Noah do have a romance but life is a little sticky for them though. This was to be a temporary job for Tricia!

I’ve enjoyed both David and Noah’s books–David’s was THE BACHELOR’S STAND IN WIFE #1912. November’s release THE MILLIONAIRE’S CHRISTMAS WIFE is Gideon’s story. I’m ready for it now

Heart warming read!4
Excellent read! I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I picked the novel up. Looking at the cover you would never expected to read such a heart warming story! The two man characters are wonderful and the sub-characters are great additions as well. I adored the children but I did find the parts where they called their dad “Father” a bit off-putting but not so much where I couldn’t finish the novel. I liked the fact that Noah knew so much about each of his children =p

totally worth it5
okay i brought this book on my kindle and couldnt put it down the twins are fun-loving and it killed me when they say father (lol) but it was very good :]

Tricia McBride came to a quick stop a few feet from the interview room of At Your Service, a prestigious Sacramento domestic-and-clerical-help agency. She stared in disbelief at the owner, Denise Watson, who’d been filling her in on the details of a job opening.

“Hold on a second,” Tricia said. “Let me get this straight. I’m not being interviewed by the person I would be working for, this Noah Falcon? I would be taking the job, boss unseen?”

“That sums it up,” Denise replied. “It happens all the time, Tricia.”

“It does?”

“Remember, I screen all my potential employers, just as I do my employees. If you find yourself in an impossible situation, you’ll leave, but I don’t think that’ll be the case. Noah’s a successful business owner, a widower with four children. Pillar of the community.”

“Yet he’s not doing the interviewing.” Tricia didn’t like how two and two were adding up. “There’s something you’re not telling me.”

Denise hesitated. “Well, to be honest, he doesn’t know his current employee is quitting. She told Noah’s brother in confidence, and he decided to take matters into his own hands and do the hiring himself.”

“Why’s that?”

“You can ask him yourself.” Denise opened the door, leaving Tricia no choice but to follow her inside.

An attractive man about her own age stood. Denise made the introductions. “Tricia McBride, this is David Falcon.”

Greetings were exchanged, then Denise left them alone.

“Your résumé is impressive,” David said, taking his seat at the conference table again.

It is? Tricia thought, but she said thank you then sat. “Why me, Mr. Falcon?”

He raised his brows at her directness. “Why not you, Ms. McBride?”

“I’m sure Denise told you I’ll be leaving Sacramento in January to move to San Diego to start a new job. I would be in your brother’s employ less than three months. That seems unfair to the family.”

“And you’re absolutely committed to this other job?”

“Yes, absolutely, unequivocally. I’ve given my word.”

“Just checking,” he said with a smile. “You know, it’s obviously not the ideal situation for us. But the important thing is that we’ll have that three-month cushion to find someone perfect, someone who will stay. Who knows, it could happen next week, and you’d be on your way. We’re not guaranteeing the job for the whole three months, either. But in the past Noah has been forced into making expedient choices. You’ll be giving him the luxury of time to find just the right person.”

“By that you mean he loses employees frequently?”

David hesitated. “My brother tends to hire people fresh out of college who don’t have a clue about life yet, not to mention how to handle four children. You were a kindergarten teacher, which leads me to believe that you like children, certainly a necessity for the job, plus you have actual experience working with them. You’re thirty-four, so you have life skills, as well. Denise has done a thorough background check on you, and I feel comfortable that you’ll be an asset.”

She eyed him directly, not easily fooled. “And what’s the real reason you’re doing this behind his back?”

He half smiled. “Truth? Noah’s children are in need of a woman like you, even if it’s only for a few months. Their mother died three years ago. The house is…quiet. They need laughter. And someone who will stand toe-to-toe with Noah.”

“Why?”

“He needs help, but he usually resists suggestions. Noah is still grieving. He doesn’t know how to deal with his children.”

Deal with them?”

“Wrong word, I guess. He loves them. He just doesn’t know how to show it.”

He sounded to Tricia like a man out of his element and on the edge. “When Denise called me yesterday to talk about the job she made it seem like a nanny position, but after the details she gave me today, I’d say it’s beyond that.”

“It’s more teacher than nanny. The kids are homeschooled, so your teaching background is important.”

“Homeschooling four children is a far cry from being a nanny.”

“Which is why the salary is so high. But the kids are bright and eager to learn.”

“How old are they?”

“The boys are nine and the girls are twelve.”

“Twins? As in two sets?”

He gave her a dry, apologetic smile. “Which is the other reason the salary is high. Yes, two sets of twins, who aren’t nearly as intimidating as you might imagine. Just the idea of them tends to scare off the prospective help, which is why I asked Denise not to mention it.”

“I’m really not sure about this….”

“I understand your reservations, but if you’ll just give it a chance…” He leaned forward. “Denise is good at what she does, finding the right person for the job. In fact, she’s downright uncanny at it. Why don’t I just take you to Noah’s house now, while he’s at the office? You can meet the children and see the environment.”

The children. Tricia pictured them, sad, and lonely for a father who didn’t know how to show he loved them. She blew out a breath, trying to dispatch the heart-tugging image. “Where does he live?”

“About an hour’s drive north of Sacramento, a little town called Chance City, although not within the town itself.”

“You mean it’s in the country?” Tricia couldn’t contain her horror at the idea. She’d spent her entire life in the city. She liked concrete and grocery stores and fast-food restaurants.

“Depends on what you mean by country. It’s in the Sierra foothills,” David said. “His home is large and comfortable, on ten acres of property.”

“As in no neighbors for ten acres?” This was getting worse and worse.

“Or thereabouts.”

“So, I’d have to live in? What about my house? I’m getting it ready to put on the market.”

“You could get Saturdays and Sundays off. He can hire weekend help locally, if he wants to,” David said.

Silence blanketed the room. Living in, with weekends off. Not exactly what she’d signed up for. Or expected. Then again, it was only for three months, and her mantra of the past year kept repeating in her head: Life is short. Make it an adventure. She just needed to keep her usual safety net in place, too.

“Okay,” she said at last. “Let’s go check it out.”

Claws of tension dug into Noah Falcon’s shoulders as he turned into his driveway and followed it to the back of his property. He drove into the garage, shut off the engine and sat, trying to shift out of work mode and into parent mode. The demands of owning a company were a breeze compared to being with his children each night. Somehow during the past three years they’d become almost strangers to each other.

Lately he’d found himself coming home later and later, knowing they would be ready for bed, if not already asleep, thus avoiding contact beyond a query about how their day had gone and what they’d learned. When he did manage to make it home for dinner, he tried to carry on a conversation at the table, but unless he continually asked questions, they were almost silent. He didn’t know how to breach that silence, to get them to open up on their own.

And this was Friday, which meant another whole weekend with them.

At least tonight he didn’t have to worry about what to do, since it was past their bedtime. But as he walked toward the house he saw his daughters’ bedroom light on and realized he’d come home too early, after all. The rest of the second-floor rooms visible from the back side of the house were dark—the master suite and the bedroom the boys shared. Although there was a bedroom for each child, both sets of twins remained doubled up, choosing not to be separated.

He understood their need to be together and hadn’t pushed them to split up, even though he remembered having to share with his middle brother, Gideon, when they were young, and begging to have his own space, not getting it until he was a teenager.

But twins were different. Closer. At least his twins were. And Adam and Zach were only nine, so they probably wouldn’t be ready for individual rooms for a while yet. Maybe Ashley and Zoe never would.

Noah let himself into the kitchen through the back door. As usual, a plastic-wrap-covered dinner plate was in the refrigerator, along with instructions on how long to heat it in the microwave. He peered through the clear wrap and saw meat loaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. His stomach growled. He shoved the plate into the microwave, set it and headed upstairs to say good-night.

As he neared the landing he heard a woman speaking, her voice dramatic. The girls must be watching a movie, because it wasn’t their nanny, Jessica.

He’d almost reached the doorway to the girls’ room when he spotted all four of his children reflected in Ashley’s floor-to-ceiling ballet mirror on the bedroom wall. They wore pajamas. The boys were nestled in beanbag chairs they’d dragged into the room from their own. The girls were lying on their stomachs on Ashley’s bed, chins resting on their hands. All of them were focused on a woman standing off to the side a little, an open book in her hand.

She was tall. He was six-four, and he figured she was five-ten, maybe taller. Her hair was a wild mass of golden-blond curls that bounced as she dramatized the story. She used a different voice for each character and put her whole body into the performance—her whole very nice body. Blue jeans clung to long legs; her breasts strained against a form-fitting sweater. Incredible breasts.

She would look magnificent naked, like some kind of Amazon. A warrior woman—

Noah scattered the image. She was a stranger in his house, in his children’s bedroom. Who the hell was she? And where was Jessica?

He moved into the room. The children turned and stared but said nothing, just looked back and forth between the woman and him.

“Good evening,” he said to them.

“Good evening, Father,” they answered almost in unison.

He saw the woman frown for a moment, then she came forward, her hand out. Brilliant green eyes took his measure. “Hi. You must be Noah Falcon. I’m Tricia McBride, your new schoolmarm.”

“My new…schoolmarm?” he repeated as he shook her hand. “But, where’s Jessica?”

“Watching television in her bedroom. We ca…

Customer Reviews:

Probably the worst Drizzt book to date3
As a whole, the Drizzt saga is extremely good. Salvatore has an excellent way of tying the personal and fantastic elements in a fantasy story together in order to create the feeling of real people living in a real (though fantastic) world. Unfortunately, this book does not do the series justice. It is weak. While the stories of Drizzt and Catti-brie fighting pirates on the sword coast are excellent, the book takes a downhill turn from there. The single worst thing that ever happened to this book was Harkle Harpell and the “Fog of Fate”, which is a silly spell meant to move adventures forward without all the tedious waiting for them involved. The spell sounds like a contrivance, which is exactly what it is, as demonstrated by where it ultimately takes the main characters (could Salvatore have found a way for them to arrive there on their own without the aid of this silly spell?). This book, unlike many of the previous Drizzt books, likes to be cozy and safe, with everyone friends at the end and no sacrifices made. None of the character development that had been seen throughout previous books is evident here- again, Salvatore flourishes in depicting personal relationships that, in this book, either do not exist or fall flat. Even the “unexpected surprise” at the end as to the “prisoner”’s identity is really no surprise at all. Unfortunately, this book has the same kinds of problems that infest “The Demon Awakens”- often Salvatore uses many words to describe that which requires few words. Subtlety is not a strength of this book. On the other hand, the book contains many good parts, as well. The customary fight scenes are quite impressive, as are the parts that include old friends revisited from this series and from other Forgotten Realms adventures. In short, I recommend this book because it is a book in the Dark Elf tradition. However, this is certainly not the best this series has to offer.

Not quite the Dark Elf Trilogy, but still worthy of Drizzt4
The first time I was introduced to the Forgotten Realms was with a young girl named Shandril and a cranky old wizard named Elminster. I immediately fell in love with the world of Toril and began searching for more about it. I found Drizzt. I have since read every novel about the dark elf up to The Silent Blade. Unlike many others, I found Passage to Dawn to be an excellent addition to the collection. Of the complaints that I have seen about the book… 1-The characters are too powerful. –Actually, when viewing the entire scope of the world of Toril, all of the characters from Regis to Lolth are small players. There are countless beings and situations that could destroy Drizzt. 2-Drizzt has become all-knowing, i.e. too smart. –First of all, he does still make mistakes and errors in judgement, showing that he is not perfect. Second of all, there are people who have found an inner peace and simply have answers for themselves. This does not mean that they are perfect. 3-The ending was a letdown. –This I can partially agree with. Salvatore did end the book rather abruptly, but I still enjoyed the reunion. Also, most people who said they could see the ending coming a mile away are saying that in hindsight, which is always biased. 4-Nothing bad ever happens; the endings are always too happy. –Good conquers evil. I believe it. Salvatore has created a series that contains characters I have genuinely grown to care about. Passage to Dawn, though not perfect, is a fine addition to the stories of Drizzt and his companions. Salvatore’s books are inspiring, and they show the level to which the human, pardon me–drow, spirit can rise.

Good, but not as good as other Drizzt books3
My comment is the same as everyone else’s. Too predictable. Also I think that instead of resurrecting old characters, Salvatore should invent some new ones. That, as well as his excellent ‘action writing’ was always his strength.

That being said, I would like to see some old plot lines tied up, or at least followed up on: namely, that elf-girl Drizzt saved who turned up again in Starless Night, and Jarlaxle, who was a complex character with strange motives (why help a rebel drow who can’t reward you when your highest priorities are causing chaos, turning a profit, and looking out for number 1?)

I agree with previous reviewers in that I’d like to see a solitary Drizzt again (or at least more Drizzt-focused novels). Over all, I felt that this book was nothing more than a long epilogue to The Legacy, and while it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great either.

Better the 2nd time around5
I purchased the first book Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt a while back to use with my students, and we did quite a few projects out of it and my students really enjoyed it. On a whim, I purchased the second book for myself and spent 12 hours the next day tearing up t-shirts and turning them into new, fun, useful things. This book still has many ways to alter t-shirts into other wearables or “better” tops (some of which were in the first book) including a chapter specifically for the guys, but it also goes beyond wearables to things you can make and use around the house, in the car, for your kids, for your pets, and some great accessories. I have planned out half of my christmas list from ideas provided in this book, especially because its cheap, easy, and a lot of fun for me to make. If you’re torn between the first and the second, I’d suggest Gen T 2.

A DIY Must Have5
As a serious DIY clothing repurposer, I ordered yet another book, hoping to get a few projects from it. I was blown away by all the useful things one can do with a T-shirt. Not only are the projects presented in a way everyone can understand, but she gives you tips on how to hand-sew, make knots, weave, braid, etc. Everything from fashion to home furnishings and crafts are featured. The variations on each project make this book great for both the beginner as well as the experienced DIY enthusiast.

Possibly better than Megan’s first book5
More great t-shirt recon ideas, with an even better variety than Megan’s first book. Great, easy-to-follow instructions. You absolutely do not need to be an expert seamstress to make these projects. Be aware, though, that this isn’t high fashion; it is a ton of fun, however.

I’ve read several of his books and chatted with him in person about sprouting. Sproutman knows his stuff, and IMO, anything he writes about sprouting is worth reading. I have grown magnificent sunflower sprouts by using a Sproutman Sprouthouse (a bamboo basket in a plastic house) and following Sproutman’s instructions. If you have good sprouting seeds and follow the instructions in this book, I suspect you too will grow awesome sprouts.

Unfortunately, the book is not that well organized and the instructions for sprouting, a fairly simple process, are unnecessarily confusing. There are many methods of growing sprouts, such as baskets, sprouting bags, glass jars, open-ended glass tubes with screens on both ends, trays, etc. This book gives instructions for only 3 methods: baskets, bags, and trays. Sproutman doesn’t explain that upfront, however. If you want to use one of those 3 methods, the instructions are knowledgeable and detailed. BUT: I suggest that when you choose one of these methods, you read through the entire chapter first, because if you try to follow along step-by-step, it’s easy to mess up.

For example, in the chapter titled, “The Technique”, Sproutman launches into instructions for using a sprouting basket, without first explaining that this technique just ONE of many sprouting methods. For this technique he says to soak 5 rounded tablespoons of seeds. He doesn’t explain until 7 pages later that you use 5 tablespoons of seed for an 8 inch basket, 6 to 7 tablespoons of seed for a 9 inch basket, and 2 to 3 tablespoons of seed for a 6 inch basket. A beginning basket sprouter who tries to follow his instructions without reading the entire chapter first, could easily make the mistake of using the wrong amount of seeds for the basket size.

In the next chapter, Sproutman gives instructions for how to use a sprout bag, a different technique. The first thing I would want to know about this is, what are the best seeds for growing in a sprout bag? That information is there, along with days ’til maturity-in the middle of the chapter.

Another thing that’s important to a good sprout book is information about seeds. What are the varities, the days until harvest, the uses and tastes, etc? There’s chart near the end of the book which gives this information, but the seed varities are not in alphabetical order. I can’t figure out any logic to the way the chart is sorted, so if you want to look up a seed variety, you have to read down the entire list. Also, there are some types of fairly popular sprouting seeds missing from the chart, for example, broccoli sprouts.

Although I think most of Sproutman’s information is excellent, albeit a bit disorganized, one thing I take issue with are his frequent sermons about why sprouting jars should not be used. I first used a sprouting jar in 1984, and my jar sprouts have always turned out just fine, without all those immature yellow sprouts Sproutman warns of. If you are careful not to use too many seeds and to shake your sprouts back and forth so they drain well and lay the jar on its side, your jar-sprouted sprouts will turn out just fine. Also Sproutman says a jar requires cheesecloth, screens and rubberbands. Back in 1984, a decade prior to the book’s publication, I used a lid which was a plastic screen and have never had to hassle with cheesecloth, screens and rubberbands. In addition, he says automatic sprouters sell in the range of $450 to $1000. It’s somewhat possible that information was accurate in the 1990s, but in the 2000s, one can find new automatic sprouters for a lot less than $450.

Some of the book’s strengths include the chapter discussing which type of water to use on sprouts, the nutritional information scattered throughout the books, and the presence of an index. I personally think the book’s dumb puns are a strength, but I’m sure the majority of readers will not. :-)

Despite my qualms with this book, Sproutman is outstanding in his field, and I still recommend it to anyone who wants to sprout via vertical sprouter (basket), bag, or tray, or learn about sprouting in general. If you’re using either a vertical sprouter or a bag, I suggest first reading the succinct review of instructions on page 173 for the vertical sprouter and p. 175 for the sproutbag.

Very comprehensive and helpful5
Yes, as one person noted, the humor is sort of out of place. Bad puns throughout. I’m still giving it a 5 because it’s the most helpful sprout book I’ve seen.

Friends of mine recommended it to me - they have an attractive set-up of baskets of sprouts growing in little seed-germinator covered plastic trays. They are thrilled with the book, and we are excited about starting to sprout. We did sprouts years ago in jars, but this system is better.

Though the book could be more condensed, it’s still an easy read in a few hours. And where else is this vital information available in such thorough detail? If you are considering sprouting, you will find the information valuable.

Truly a Wonderful and Complete Book on Sprouting5
This is a great book for a person who is interested in sprouting; it is very detailed and is truly full of very interesting and useful information. The book also helps to nullify a lot of the myth about toxins and hidden dangers in sprouts. The real dangers, in actuality, exist in cooked, processed, adulterated, toyed-with, sprayed, chemicalized, distorted foods (which our grocery shelves are full of). I am now 50 years old. Back in my youthful college days, I used to sprout a great deal, eating living foods exclusively. Though I stayed being a vegetarian, I got back into the cooked food craze… eating food like it was a drug for “taste” only. I work with the multiply handicapped and even though I am a teacher I have to do a lot of lifting (of adults who are not at all feather-weight). My arthritis (which runs in the family) was killing me, despite taking all kinds of natural and man made supplements. Getting back to live food was the answer I needed. Steve’s book was inspirational and very helpful. I should have never deviated from what was truly the most nutritious way to eat!
There are many ways of sprouting. I happen to like the sproutpeople.com sprouters best of all. Steve’s book is a priceless tool for anyone interested in sprouting… it has all kinds of neat tips and suggestions.
Also, one suggests doing a web search on Dr. Budwig’s Diet… as most people are seriously deficient in essential fatty acids of the proper type. I take my oil with a little bit of live yogurt.
Anyway… I would not want Steve’s book, including his Kitchen Garden book… missing from my shelves!
As Hippocrates said: “Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.”

The books are still great but the illustrations are different!4
This set, ‘Wayside School Boxed Set’ is also known as ‘The Wayside School Collection’ and contains all three of the “real” books in the ‘Wayside School’ series. ‘Sideways Stories From Wayside School’, ‘Wayside School is Falling Down’ and ‘Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger’ are as entertaining as they always were. The price is very good and you even get the three boxes together in a box. Please note that you do not get the Wayside Arithmetic books, which really were for more devoted fans and did nothing to enhance the actual storyline found in the three major/main books.

The only problem I had here was with the illustrations. I grew up reading the ‘Wayside School’ books, as they were illustrated by Julie Brinckloe. For years, I had a very clear picture of all the characters from Wayside School. Brinckloe’s illustrations were very good at making the characters match Louis Sachar’s descriptions. They’ve been stuck in my head for fifteen to twenty years. These three titles in the ‘Wayside School’ box set are illustrated by Adam McCauley and the difference is startling. I have a hard time warming up to the new (and inferior) artwork. Even though I like having the three books in a tidy little set, I definitely prefer Brinckloe’s illustrations of the Wayside gang.

Everybody knows that Louis Sachar’s humor was the real calling card for the ‘Wayside School’ series and not the pictures. However, you may want to stick with earlier copies of these books if you grew up looking at Julie Brinckloe’s illustrations, as I did. Adam McCauley’s illustrations are inferior in every way. The drawings are more juvenile and they don’t look much like the original characters.

Don’t get me wrong. The books are great, among the best children’s literature you can buy for around $10 (the average price of the set). I’m still giving this four stars but you need to think about it a little before buying this box set. Unless you have no real attachment to the earlier artwork or are a first-time reader of the ‘Wayside School’ series, you’ll want to track down the earlier copies. The “original” books are widely available for a great price in paperback, even if you have to buy them separately.

Great Book4
This book is about a class. They are located on the 30th story of their school. You’ll meet john who can only read upside down. Sammy the stinky one. Laugh your guts off as you read these wacky stories.

This book is appropriate for middle grade readers and for people who love comedy books This book is by the Newberry award winner Louis Sachar {rhymes with cracker} who also wrote Wayside School is falling down and Wayside school gets a little stranger.

Clever, zany stories by Louis Sachar5
I first heard about these books from a friend who’s a second grade teacher. She would read them to her class. Each chapter is a quick, individual story, usually about a particular student or situation. I keep one of these slim volumes in my purse at all times and pull it out when we have 5 to 15 minutes, like when waiting for our meal at a restaurant or waiting for daddy while he’s in the dressing room. Since the stories stand alone, it’s okay if you don’t read them continuously: days or weeks may go by and you can quickly jump back into the world of Wayside School. Both my ten year old son and 7 year old daughter love these clever, zany, ironic stories. (Sometimes my ten year old reads them to the 7 year old!) Many stories require a little extra thinking to “get” the joke. It’s a pleasure to see your kids eyes light up when they do! The book set makes a great gift for kids who aren’t keen on reading, and, of course, those who are!

About the Author
When Louis Sachar was going to school, his teachers always pronounced his name wrong. Now that he has become a popular author of children’s books, teachers all over the country are pronouncing his name wrong. It should be pronounced “Sacker,” like someone who tackles quarterbacks or someone who stuffs potatoes into sacks.

Mr. Sachar received a B.A. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. His first book, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, was accepted for publication during his first year of law school. After receiving his law degree, he spent six years asking himself whether he wanted to be an author or a lawyer before deciding to write for children full-time. His books include Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger, There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, Wayside School is Falling Down, Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes, and the Marvin Redpost series.

Louis Sachar lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and their daughter, Sherre. In His Own Words…

“One thing I would like to know from my favorite authors is who their favorite authors are. So I will begin there. My favorite authors (not necessarily in order) are: E. L. Doctorow; J. D. Salinger; Kurt Vonnegut; Dostoyevski; Tolstoy; Flannery O’Connor; Kinky Friedman; Rex Stout; E. B. White; William Saroyan; John Steinbeck; Dr. Seuss. These are mostly adult authors, which is only fitting, since I am mostly an adult.”

“I was born in East Meadow, New York. My father worked on the seventy-eighth floor of the Empire State Building, which I thought was pretty cool. We moved to Tustin, California, when I was nine, not too far from Disneyland.”

“I wrote my first children’s story as part of a creative writing assignment in high school. That story was called “Apple Power” and was about a mean teacher named Mrs. Gorf who turned her students into apples. My teacher didn’t think that I had taken the assignment seriously and suggested I write something else.”

“During my last year of college at the University of California at Berkeley, I worked part-time at a nearby elementary school — Hillside School. I got college credit for being a teacher’s aide, and I was paid two dollars an hour to watch over the kids on the playground. My official title was Noontime Supervisor, but the kids called me Louis the yard teacher.”

“After graduating from college I wrote Sideways Stories from Wayside School. The kids in the book are named after the kids I knew at Hillside, and, of course, Louis the yard teacher is in there, too.”

“I went to law school in San Francisco a year later, and the book was published during my second year. When I graduated in 1980, I had to make the difficult choice between writing and practicing law. I knew I could make a good living practicing law, but I chose to write because it was what I liked to do.”

“I met Carla in 1981 while visiting a school in Texas. She was the school counselor and became the inspiration behind the character (also a counselor named Carla) in There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom. When I wrote the book, I didn’t know I’d END up marrying her.”

“We were married in 1985, and our daughter, Sherre, was horn in 1987. In 1990 we moved from San Francisco to Austin, Texas. We have a dog named Lucky. In my spare time I like to play duplicate bridge.”

Lower your taxes4
This is a good book. The only difference between this one and previous editions is a small amount of information which directly applies to the current year the book is targeted toward. All the examples are the same as previous editions. One edition seems to have essentially the same info as another.

Everyone can learn here.5
This book is easy to read, interesting, and helpful to anyone interested in starting a small business (most people should), or those already operating a small business - great tips to lower your taxes that your preparer may not tell you!! 5 stars!

A very thorough outline of what you can do and how to do it. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in business for themselves.

Great for series fans!4
As a long-time series fan, I really enjoyed this latest edition to the Elm Creek novels. I’d give 4.5 stars, if that was a choice. The quilters gather to spend the day after Thanksgiving at Elm Creek Manor, to devote the day to quilting and togetherness. They celebrate their friendship as they individually struggle with family, life and relationship issues. There’s also a lot of great, interesting description of holiday traditions from different cultures. I was impressed that Chiaverini didn’t shy away from conflict or controversy, both within the characters’ lives and in the larger world that influences them. It’s a poignant reminder to find joy and comfort in life, while keeping awareness of those who are suffering. Plus, it takes a novel that could easily have sold just as feel-good fluff and challenges both author and readers.

I haven’t always thought much of these “holiday” books (like “The Christmas Quilt” or “The New Year’s Quilt”) which contained a lot of recycled material from Chiaverini’s other novels. “The Quilter’s Holiday” has just a touch of review material, but it is integrated well (and not too long). I was glad to see the storylines of the main circle of Elm Creek Quilters move forward.

The Quilter’s Holiday3
I love Jennifer’s writing, but this book is a bit redundant. It’s kind of the same as many of her other books. Not as interesting as some of her earlier books. I love the more historical ones that focus on only a few characters. I will keep it, because I have all of her books. If I was not collecting her I would just pass it on to someone else. Probably not a re-read book.

fine character driven tale of friendship4
Every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the Elm Street Quilters gather to spend time with friends stitching gifts for loved ones. This year is special as each person creates a quilting block to add to the cornucopia that symbolizes what they are most pleased about. The event is a success but a snowstorm threatens to strand everyone at Em Court Manor.

Diane leaves anyway, but ends up stranded with a chargeless cell phone. Sylvia who once was the sole owner of Elm Creek Manor hopes that Summer, a founder of Elm Creek Quilts, has found through research her blood relatives living in California. Sarah, another founding mother of Elm Creek Quilts, learns her husband will not be there for her pregnancy because his father needs him to run the family business. Anna the manor’s chef tells Jeremy , the boyfriend of another founding mother, that she loves him even as he is driving to the dorm of his girlfriend Summer. Gretchen seeks a cause to serve. Gwen misses her daughter Summer while finishing a quilt to thank the person responsible for giving her mentor a bone marrow transplant. Quilters unable to come are missed but remembered.

More a series of vignettes that update the quilters’ lives especially their personal problems; this novel targets the fans of Elm Creek Quilts. This novel will leave readers laughing, crying and empathizing with the woes of the quilters. Fans will relish this entry but to learn what happens to the Quilters and their staff the audience will need to continue with the next saga. For the Elm Creek Manor horde, Jennifer Chiaverini stitches a fine character driven tale of friendship.
