Customer Reviews:

Great Wireless Multi-Function!5
I spent about a week researching for just the right multi-function printer for my needs. I own a small business with about 30 employees so I needed more than an inkjet but didn’t require a ‘corporate’ $1000+ version either. I needed fax, scan, copy, and print capability with laser printing and built-in wireless capability. Suprisingly, there are not that many printers on the market that can give you all of these in one package. Originally I was going to purchase the Brother’s MFC-8870 for around $500 which all the reviews on the internet recommend, but I found this while browsing around and realized that it had just come out a few weeks ago. Although there were no reviews out yet for this new printer, it was considerably less expensive than the 8870 and the only thing I seemed to be losing was auto-duplexing so I made the purchase. It took about 15 minutes total for me to set up an ad-hoc wireless printer setup and everything works great. The scans are nice, the printing is very crisp and clear even in very small fonts. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is the fax which I won’t be using much. I really can’t say anything bad about this product. Sure it would be nice to have a legal-size flatbed, auto-duplex, and 64mb memory (instead of the default 32mb) but for the money this can’t be beat. Overall, this seems to be a really great product at a great price. I highly recommend this if you need a 4-in-1 with wireless capability. Definitely the best on the market for this niche.

Excellent For Small Office - Great For Envelopes5
I replaced my Brother MFC 7420 with this MFC-7840 and am very happy with the upgrade. It does everything I need and is small and quiet in my small office. It has a straight paper passthrough for envelopes, which works great. Read below for a comparison to other similar models.

I’ve had a Brother MFC-7240 for 2 or 3 years when the fuser went out last week. A new fuser is $150 + $75-100 to install, so needless to say, I decided to buy a new all-in-one machine. My Konica Minolta 2430DL color laser printer also conked out at the same time and I investigated replacing both with a color laser AIO. After not having much luck finding one of those that could easily print envelopes, I decided to stick with two different machines. In retrospect, I’m glad I did - it’s good to have two printers around to back each other up just in case. (If you’ve got really light duty needs, consider the Samsung CLX-3160FN, which I came across in during this first shop. It’s dirt cheap for a color laser AOI. Very small and very quiet, but not solid enough for a small office load.)

After reading up on monochrome laser AOIs for much too long, I narrowed my choices down to about a dozen in the $200-$500 range. I refuse to buy something I can’t see and play around with first, so I went shopping at local stores to see the models I chose in action. I went to Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax. Tried for Circuit City and Best Buy also, but believe it or not, they don’t carry ANY monochrome laser AIO machines in their stores - only on-line. A manual feed and envelope printing are a must for my use, and reviews I read were conflicting, so I took a big stack of envelopes to test the machines out myself. I also took my own originals (a purchase order and envelope - both with various sizes of text and graphics) so I could compare apples to apples.

Most machines I tested had decent quality copying. There were differences, but all were acceptable for b&w general office work. Of course, copying was the only feature I could really test at the store. They all warmed up quickly and most were quiet enough. Here’s what I found…

Brother MFC-8460 is too loud, big and imposing for my small office and took a little longer to warm up.

Canon 4270 has duplexing, which I was in the market for, but a funky half-tray for paper that was hard to load and looked like it could have problems down the road. Other than that, I liked it a lot (my second choice). Printed envelopes well and looked stylish.

Canon 4150 printed the envelope crooked and the coverage was too heavy and “grayed” the white envelope. I imagine this might be improved when changing settings from the print software to adjust for the thicker envelope paper.

HP1522NF printed the envelope uncrinkled, but it made a LOT of noise curling around the paper feed, which worried me. It also “grayed” the white envelope without being able to select a “thick paper” option.

HP M2727 did not print the envelope well at all.

Samsung SCX-4725fn has an easy manual feed, but toner on my graphics flaked off the envelope. It copied very quickly and quietly.

Brother MFC-7840w and MFC-7440n are pretty much the same except the they are different colors and the 7840 is wireless and better for networking. They both have backs that open so labels and envelopes can pass straight through and not wrinkle or curl at all.

I ended up with the Brother MFC-7840W from OfficeMax for $299.00. (It was $249 at Staples and Office Depot with a mail-in rebate - it’s a long story why I couldn’t get back to one of them and save the $50.) Not only did I like this machine best in my test, but I was happy with my old MFC-7420 and hope this updated version will treat me as well. The one thing I really wish the 7840 had that is does not, is duplex printing. If it had that, it would be the perfect machine.

I did a USB installation to Windows XP, which was simple and took about 45 minutes, but unfortunately the copier and scanner did not work. I called tech support and got through quickly. They couldn’t help me, but quickly bumped me up to the next level of tech support. This next level was actually staffed with a real engineer who had the machine in the same room with him. After a few diagnostics he had me run, he determined that the logic board was defective and volunteered to send me a new one. I opted to return it to OfficeMax, who exchanged it with no problem.

I just plugged the new machine in and didn’t reinstall the software. Now everything works perfectly and I’m very happy with this machine.

Manual Feeder Not So Good !3
This is a very nice printer and I agree with the other reviewers positive feedback. But there is one problem I have found for those who print forms and envelopes via the manual feeder. When the printer is in sleep mode and you put a piece of paper in the manual feeder the printer wakes up and does a small grab of the paper. Unfortunately this small grab puts the paper off center so if you are printing on form paper it is a real nuisance. A solution may be to wake it up first by printing something else, then put in your form paper and print before it goes to sleep again, but again not the best solution. Also the lack of ability to put multiple envelopes in the manual feeder I find is a weakness. All my older LaserJets could at least handle 5-6 envelopes in the manual feeder. After reading many reviews though I find that trying to find a MFP that can handle envelopes is a major problem in itself and this printer is no different. I also noticed the toner that came with the printer did not last for nearly as long as advertised, it started showing toner low very very soon!

Customer Reviews:

Good for what it is4
This is my second pico projector so I knew not to expect something that would fill a bright room. It does come with a lot of basic cables and even international plug adaptors but it does not come with a direct iphone/ipod cable. That said you can open it like a hard drive on your computer and drop and drag you MP4 video files, MP3 music and PowerPoint presentations onto it and they play just fine. To me that is the best feature; you can play video and PowerPoint without having to connect it to anything. You need to think of it as a gee-whiz unit rather than a presentation workhorse.Really is pocket sized and includes sound and at least one hour of battery life. I’ll probably take it camping.

It is sort of crazy that it comes with a quick set up guide but no operating instructions. I’m used to looking things up though and easily found the PDF on the 3M Website.

A nifty little product5
I was fortunate enough to be able to test this product for the Vine program. The 3M Pocket Projector MPro150 is a product that is useful, as my job frequently requires presentations without there always being projectors readily available. I was happy to take a look at the MPro150, to check out its different capabilities and see what it could do.

In terms of the quality of the image, I have to say that the projector looks great projected against a screen or a plain wall. The box says that it works at up to 50 feet away from the surface being projected onto, and while I didn’t test it at that great a distance, I got a great looking picture at all the different distances upon which I tried it.

As far as ease of operation is concerned, the unit is superb. The menu has some easily recognizable pictograms, and navigation is extremely simple. I had little problem going through Excel and PDF files, as well as the more vanilla PowerPoint and text files. Good stuff.

Connecting to other devices is pretty simple. It really is plug-and-play with the PC, and the iPod/iPhone hook-up worked quite well in being able to play music directly from the phone (though not, say, pictures from the phone). The smart card works well with the unit’s file system, and I can’t get over the projector being able to actually hold presentations, plus videos and all the rest. Very cool.

Overall, this device does everything that I could possibly have expected it to do. I would give it a solid five stars.

playing from stored memory4
I found the projector to be a good value ovrall but was dissapointed to find that there were some files E.G. with PDF and MP3 formats that the projector would not play from it’s internal or chip memory. I had to test everything to see if it would play or not.
Also I wished that there was some way of going back a short time on a video if I missed something.3M Pocket Projector MPro150

Customer Reviews:

Some advances for the popular Western Digital Caviar Green drives, but XP users approach with caution5
THE QUICK TAKE: The WD10EARS is a new (shipping 12-2009) version of Western Digital’s popular and successful WDxxEADS Caviar Green series of drives. It’s a very good drive, but may need more thought than usual about whether it’s the right drive for you.

The Caviar Green drives offer low power consumption, low noise and moderate operating temperatures, while still maintaining performace good enough for many applications, such as networked storage. This new WDxxEARS series uses more dense 500GB platters - so a 1TB drive has just two platters, and several drives up to 2TB are available - and has 64MB of cache.

ADVANCED FORMAT: There’s another change as well. WD is using this series to transition to 4KB sectors on the hard drive; they call it WD Advanced Format technology. The long-term goal is to improve the efficiency of large hard drives, but as a transitional move they still trying to accomodate the 512KB sectors that Windows XP uses. So the drive emulates that, using 512KB logical sectors. However, they still claim that Advanced Format provides an improvement in burst speeds.

ISSUES WITH XP: While that sounds like all good news, it turns out that many XP users need to use the WD Align software to setup the drive, which can be time consuming and create some potential issues in formatting and partitioning the drive, and in finding tools to do that.

The exception is if you are using a single partition for a clean install - then there is an option to set a jumper on the drive before installing. WD has a table which summarizes installation at their “Advanced Format Hard Drive Download Utility” web page - anyone buying this drive should be sure to review that page.

So less technical users may want to believe WD when they say “WD Advanced Format drives are specifically optimized for Mac and the latest Windows operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7.” This drive might not a good choice for some XP users - you’ll be fine with the tried and true EADS series.

VISTA AND WINDOWS 7: Further, cloning and partitioning tools might present issues with Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well. You can read more about the AF transition at the WD web page mentioned above in the AnandTech article, “Western Digital’s Advanced Format: The 4K Sector Transition Begins.” They note that as of 12-2009 there might not be any commercially available cloning and imaging tools that would work with these drives.

LINUX AND MAC: The Anandtech article also states that current versions of Linux and Mac OS X are not affected by issues with Advanced Format, but discussions online suggest that Linux users seem to face some complexities on how to best partition and format to avoid mis-alignment.

OTHER INFO: The WD site has a good whitepaper on Advanced Format. Tom’s Hardware has a good discussion about the earlier EADS series in an article entitled “Caviar Green, WD10EADS, And 1 TB,” with power and performance info; and some interesting points if you Google “Pros And Cons Of Going Green.”

WD Advanced Format 4k Sector Drives (INFORMATION ONLY)3
INFORMATION ONLY! I don’t own this drive; however I did just purchase the previous Caviar Green 1.5 TB WD15EADS model.

As I was about to purchase that hard drive, I noticed the banner near the top of the page that informs you “There is a newer model of this item”
I thought, “Well, that’s awesome. Thanks Amazon!” It was in my shopping cart, but then, I decided to do some research first, just to see if it was worth a little extra money. After all, the debates about cache size (32MB to 64MB) seem to reveal it’s just a marketing gimmick and performance gains don’t really exist.

So, after some searching, I came to learn about the new Western Digital “Advanced Format”.
It seems these new Caviar Green drives (all containing EARS in the model number) are using 4k sectors rather than the standard 512b (0.5k) sectors.
This change means that these drives are NOT inherently compatible with Windows XP or earlier.
However, Western Digital has two solutions in place to allow them to work with Windows XP.

1) They include a jumper on the drive that can be set to “trick” Windows into properly aligning the partition table.
This solution is only “reliable” when using a SINGLE partition. I don’t like it.

2) They have a custom application (not pretty) that can be used to “shift” the partition and data into alignment.
This is apparently the recommended method that can also work for multiple partitions.

Clearly, you don’t see this information described anywhere on this page and since Windows XP is still in wide-spread use, I think it’s unfair not to be given this warning upfront. Also, if you use any type of hard drive imaging software, these new drives will be problematic there as well.

This information and more can be read in the article at AnandTech:
[…]

Anyway, I scored this at a neutral three stars based on lack of important information only.
And, while I love the feature, Amazon’s “new version” notice can be misleading given the vast difference between the two models.

Nice Mainstream Upgrade5
I purchased this drive to replace the drive in my Wife’s computer that was running out of space. The PC was running Windows 7 and the drive being replaced was a WD3200KS 7200RPM drive.

PC the drive went into: Stock Intel Q6600, Gigabyte GA-EP45-D3SL, 8GB DDR2, and a ATI HD4870.

The Windows install wasn’t that old and I didn’t really want to mess with getting her all her stuff back so I used a Clonezilla Live CD to clone the old drive to the new one. I then booted straight into Windows 7 off the new drive. Windows asked me to restart so I did and the system was up and running without incident. I then went into the Windows 7 disk manager and extended the partition to fill the whole drive.

Knowing this was an Advanced Format drive but unsure if the alignment would be correct due to the cloning, I downloaded the bootable image for the align utility from the Western Digital site and burned it to a CD. I ran the utility and it indicated that the partition was aligned correctly and there was nothing that needed to be done.

The old drive showed as a 5.4 and the new one as a 5.9 on the Windows Experience Index. I didn’t think that was too bad coming from an older 7200 RPM drive to this. I was a little worried it would be slower but that isn’t the case. I haven’t personally used the PC enough myself to know but my wife says she notices it is a bit faster and things are quicker to load.

This drive for me was a worthwhile upgrade and money well spent to this point. Only time will tell about the reliability as with any drive.

Canon LiDE1003
Bought this scanner to replace my failed Epson Perfection 1650. I like its compact size and quietness, and find the operating speed close to that of the 1650. The software is ok, and scanner operation is as convenient as that of the 1650, but there is less flexibility to allow altering color satuation, hue, etc. I found image sharpness disappointingly soft, and color saturation less than that of the original photo being copied. The overall effect is a somewhat faded, hazy image. Tried downloading and installing a fresh driver, but that didn’t change this characteristic. After selecting USE SCANNER DRIVER on the operating panel, I was able to make selections that improved the image quality somewhat, but it is still not up to the performance of my previous scanner. Turning off the softening mask makes very little improvement. For me this scanner does not live up to previous glowing user reviews that helped decide this purchase.

Great scanner for generic everyday jobs5
I needed a scanner to scan an occasional document, receipt, or magazine page. Image quality needed to be decent and other than that I wanted a device that just did the job and didn’t need a lot of hand-holding.

So far I’m satisfied to impressed. Take it out of the box, plug in the USB cable (big plus it doesn’t add yet another power adapter to my setup), Windows Vista automatically detects and installs the driver and you’re ready to go. I didn’t even look at the software CD which comes with the scanner for the first week. The OS integrated driver is sufficient for the generic scans.

It’s nice and small and lightweight, has a small locking slider for the lid on the bottom. So when I’m not scanning I simply unplug the USB port and it’s easily stored on the shelf and not taking up valuable space.

The scan speed and image quality is good enough for my needs. I’m sure some folks may have a more detailed critique, but that wasn’t what I’m looking for.

After eventually installing the software that came with it, the copy button on the front works fine. Push it and the software will scan and then send the result to the printer. Not a high volume copying solution, but if one makes a copy at home once in a blue moon and hates the trip to Kinko’s this fits in well.

So if you’re looking for a simple and reasonably priced scanning solution for occasional work, this is a great choice.

Does the Job4
This scanner is just fine for use at home, or if you need it in a small business, where you’re scanning in a few pages a day.

It’s definitely not a heavy duty model, and not the fastest, so don’t expect it to be quick like the Xerox machines at Fedex Kinko’s. Nor should you expect studio quality scans.

That being said, Canon has managed to keep the cost down, while delivering great image quality for the average user, so if you’re looking for above-average quality scans in a slim package, this scanner is right for you.

Note: I do appreciate the scan-to-pdf option, which is great since PDF is portable across all operating systems.

Customer Reviews:

Short Life2
This battery is used in the Sony TX7 camera. I don’t know if it’s the battery or the camera, but the battery simply does not last very long. The camera manual says you can take a little over 200 shots or view x amount of photos. Combine the two of taking and viewing and the battery dies quickly. It really works out to being able to take less than half the amount of photos they claim.

The battery is costly. It dies faster than most other camera batteries. It takes about 2 hours to charge. And you need at least two or three batteries to carry with you because of the short life. But, the camera does take good pictures.

The bottom line is that you just don’t have a choice if you want the TX7 camera.

Perfect battery for my Cybershot Camera. I am 100% pleased.5
I travel a lot and so I needed an extra battery for my Sony. This battery is as good if not better than the battery I already have and is way better than the older G-Series Sony Batteries.

Customer Reviews:

I love the wireless convience5
This seems to be a great printer. I am using it as a replacement for my old Cannon PIXMA 3000 which just gave up the ghost. When you read the other reviews that talk about a 30 minute set up time, don’t look at that as a sign of difficulty or potential incompetance on the reviewer…this unit does do a 20-30 self diagnostic as part of the set up process. Images are clean and clear. And HP finally has the message to create separate ink carts for each color rather than having to toss them all out when you run out of one single color.

What I like:
- The wireless capability. Can print from any PC in the house on this one.
- Separate Ink Cartridges
- Duplex printing
- HP has pre-sent usage pattern ready for you - like fast utility print, duplex printing, printing for photos, etc.
- Tools that help you see what your ink usage will be like.
- According to the HP site, low cost per page printing. (fingers crossed here).

Dislikes:
-Big footprint on the desk. Oh well.

Bonus: If you act before year end, your old printer may qualify for a $50 rebate when you return it to HP. See the HP product site for details. This helped knock $50 off this price.

GREAT PRINTER5
I have only had this printer a day but I am very happy with it. The installation does take a bit of time .. about 30 min [which HP said it would] but it’s all done automatically from the installation software. The print quality is very good and fast depending upon the website feed. Unlike the previous reviewer, I just let the installation take it’s course and I have had no problems with any HP popups so far. I am using a wireless network at home and I was very surprised how easy the HP software located all the wireless network information and connected without any problem. So far I am VERY pleased with this printer and would highly recommend it especially for wireless users.

Very pleased with this printer.4
I have read all the reviews and would like to offer an opinion. I have had mine about a month, and I love it. Don’t know what the other person was doing when doing the duplex (2 side printing) but my printouts have come out looking exactly as they do on the screen, no 50% reduction. I also experienced a 30 minutes setup time but I’ve come to expect that with new software. It prints great and fast, just wished the cartridges lasted longer. I have also had no pop ups under IE or Firefox. I suggest doing the custom install and choose what you want to install and what you don’t. Hope this helps future buyers.

Customer Reviews:

Great little camera, but needs to be “Waterproof”2
I ordered this camera to use during water activties on a caribbean cruise. I used it the weekend before on dry land and thought it did a great job - especially shooting “Wide screen” video.

We left for our cruise and took the Pentax on our first beach day. Used it snorkeling (note I stay on the surface and never dive down so the camera would never be more than 3 feet submerged) and took fabulous underwater photos and video. I was very pleased.

When we returned to our cabin, some hours after leaving the water, I took out the battery and put it in the charger and also downloaded the photos & video into my computer. Next morning, however, I took the battery out of the charger and noticed the contacts were all corroded. Looked inside the camera and the same thing.

I managed to get it working and it took photos one more day. Drained the battery during another water-filled day. I could never get the battery to charge again. Sadly, I had no waterproof camera to use during the two remaining water fun days.

Returned the camera to Amazon and will be shopping for something similar but more “Waterproof!”

Great Beach Camera!5
Easy to use water proof camera you’ll want to take to any water activity. All functions are simple and user friendly. The large picture viewing screen is extra good for older eyes with no glasses. You will not find better for the money. Old NC surfer.

Great Little Camera5
Since I just started using the camera, I have not yet utilized it to its fullest capacity, but so far I am very pleased. I like the fact that the camera is water proof so I do not have to worry about using it around water. Also, I like the feature that the zoom lens is encased so the lens does not constantly extend then compact every time you turn it on/off. The 5X optical lens is very sharp and even the digital zoom is quite sharp. Although the manual is thicker than the camera, it comes with a quick guide to let you start taking pictures quickly. I can always read the manual on an as-need basis if necessary.

I have owned a Pentax camera before (Optio S sub-compact)and really liked it also. However, this camera is much easier to use and produces very sharp photos. For a little over $200, very well worth the price!

The water and dustproof Optio WS80 is a perfect choice for travel, outdoor activities and families. Featuring a 10-megapixel CCD and a 5x internal optical zoom housed in a slim, palm-sized body that is less than an inch thick, the Optio WS80 has a large 2.7-inch LCD with 230,000 dot resolution for easy composition. Optio WS80 Highlights

Exceptional waterproof performance for underwater shooting and adventure
The palm-sized Optio WS80 assures reliable waterproof performance that allows underwater photography up to five feet for up two hours (JIS Class 8 standard). The WS80 also features the Pentax-exclusive, highly water-repellent SP (Super Protect) coating on the protective glass panel that covers the zoom lens. As a result, the Optio WS80 may be rinsed clean with fresh water if it becomes covered with dirt or sand. Coupled with remarkable dustproof capabilities equivalent to JIS Class 6, the Optio WS80 may be used without worry in many different situations where water or dirt is a major concern.

High-quality images delivered by 10.0 effective megapixels
Combining 10.0 effective megapixels with the Pentax-developed imaging engine and high-performance Pentax zoom lens, the Optio WS80 produces brilliant, high-resolution prints with edge-to-edge sharpness even when images are enlarged.

High-performance optical 5x zoom lens
The slim, palm-sized Optio WS80 features an optical 5x zoom lens covering focal lengths from 35mm to 175mm in the 35mm format. The camera offers an Intelligent Zoom function that extends the zoom range up to approximately 28.5x for even tighter zooming in on the subject.

High-quality, widescreen, HD movie recording
The Optio WS80 captures beautiful, flawless HD movie clips at 16:9 aspect ratio (1280 x 720 pixels)* at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The camera also comes equipped with advanced, user-friendly features designed to facilitate movie recording: the Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode, which automatically compensates for camera shake during movie shooting; and the Underwater Movie mode, which automatically optimizes color settings for underwater movie shooting.
*When the Optio WS80’s AV output terminal is used, movie clips are output as normal image-size data. If the user wishes to play back movie clips at high-definition-TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels), the data must be transferred to a personal computer for playback.

High-speed Face Detection, with a range of user-friendly features
The Optio WS80’s advanced Face Detection AF & AE function captures 32 faces in sharp focus and perfect exposure in a mere 0.03 seconds. It also accurately detects a subject facing the camera at an angle or with a tilted head. The Optio WS80 offers other user-friendly features, including:

  • A Smile Capture mode automatically releases the shutter the moment the camera detects the subject’s smile.
  • A Blink Detection function warns the photographer when a subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.
  • A Small Face filter helps reduce a subject’s face so that it appears smaller in proportion to the body to produce more flattering well-balanced portraits.

Triple anti-shake protection to prevent different types of camera shake

  • Pixel Track SR mode : When recording still images, the Optio WS80’s Pixel Track SR (Shake Reduction) mode effectively compensates for camera shake by processing affected images.
  • High-Sensitivity SR mode*: When it detects low-lighting conditions in still-image shooting, the Optio WS80 automatically raises its sensitivity to as high as ISO 6400, making it possible to use a higher shutter speed. This effectively minimizes the adverse effects of camera shake and subject motion blur under poor lighting conditions.
  • Movie SR mode**: During movie recording, the Optio WS80 prevents blurry images by effectively minimizing annoying camera shake.

* When the High-Sensitivity SR mode is selected, the recorded size is fixed to 5M (2592 x 1944 pixels).
** When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

Large 2.7-inch LCD monitor for effortless image viewing
The Optio WS80 features a large 2.7-inch extra bright color LCD monitor so photographers may view on-screen images, menus and mode-settings with ease while shooting and during playback.

Additional Features

  • Interval shooting mode, convenient for fixed-point observation of starry skies, flowers and plants
  • High-speed 9 point AF system, with Auto-Tracking function, to maintain constant focus on a moving subject
  • Auto Picture mode automatically selects one of eight shooting modes for the optimum results in a wide variety of shooting conditions
  • A variety of digital filters including Toy Camera and Retro to add distinctive visual effects to recorded images
  • Dynamic Range adjustment prevents overexposed and underexposed areas in images
  • Digital Wide function creates a panoramic, extra-wide-angle image (equivalent to an image taken with an approx. 25.4mm lens in 35mm format) from two images
  • Digital Panorama mode creates a single panoramic picture from as many as three images
  • Style Watch function displays the time with pushbutton operation, even when the camera’s power is turned off
  • Image recovery function recovers accidentally erased images
  • Frame composite function (with 90 frames stored in the camera) shoots or composes images with decorative photo frames

Worth the price4
This review is on the Sony MDR-IF240R not MDR-IF240RK, not sure if there’s any difference. I needed a wireless headphone for the bedroom because I watch TV over 2 hours every night while my wife sleeps and about 2 hours early in the morning. I’ve also owned a wireless Sennheiser HDR60 and a wired Panasonic RP-HT970 Vibration Series Headphone. The Sennheiser worked fine, but their rechargeable battery (two included) would only last me about two days. I always had one recharging so I could swap it out, but it was still annoying to have it cut out in the middle of a program. After a year one of the batteries wouldn’t hold a charge any more and when I saw how much a replacement battery cost, I decided to buy the Panasonic. Because it was wired, the Panasonic RP-HT970 sounded great, especially the bass effects with DVD’s. It was very comfortable and I would still be using it, if I hadn’t tripped on the cable and broke it. It had also been an obstacle for my wife when she had to walk across the room.

I decided to go wireless again and bought the Sony MDR-IF240R after reading reviews. I wanted a headphone that used standard batteries and wouldn’t need constant replacing. I have cordless phones and a wireless PC network, so I decided having no interference using infrared was better than having the ability to go room to room using other technology. Since I only used it for TV viewing, I was willing to accept decent, if not great, sound quality. This headphone met all my requirements. I put in one standard AAA battery instead of the rechargeable battery that came with it and I haven’t had to change it in over two weeks of constant use (4 hours/day).

The headphones are mostly plastic and look a bit cheap. They are fairly comfortable, but if I tilt my head, they will fall off because the foam cushions are flat rather than cupped like the Sennheiser and the headband is rather flimsy. That would be my biggest complaint. Sony should also have provided a longer cable for the transmitter to allow more flexibility in placement. Sound quality is fine for TV viewing, but it can’t compare to the quality of a wired headphone like the Panasonic which makes you feel like you’re actually in a movie when played on DVD.

I have perfect reception using it at 12 feet and I’ve walked 45 degrees to the left and right without any loss. If something comes between the headphone and the transmitter, it will cut out, so positioning is very important. You can eliminate the hiss that others have mentioned, if you turn up the volume on the sound source (e.g. TV or Receiver) rather than turning up the volume control on the headphone. On the Sennheiser there was a tuning control, which I had to fiddle with in order to receive a signal, but the Sony doesn’t have or need one.

In conclusion, this headphone met all my expectations, the price was reasonable and I would recommend it to others until someone comes out without something that has better sound quality and excellent battery life.

Okay for tv, games, nok for music3
These wireless headphones perform as advertised. Almost. I don’t quite get the “24 feet” range but then again all the range I needed and expected was within a standard sized room. The convenience is freedom of movement within the room with decent fidelity to watch late night television or play computer games without distracting others. However the phones have a noticable hiss which is distracting for most music. Also a minor peeve is the plastic bar across the top. The bar is not padded and the phones have built-in springs which force the bar down on the top of your head. Noticably uncomforable for me after a while and I have a full head of hair. The comfort level is okay if you wear the phones draped along the back of your neck (which makes it tough to sit back in a high backed chair or lie down on the couch) or below your jaw (which makes it tough to munch on snacks in that position though). Or you can kludge it to a certain length with some electrical tape. Overall the phones are okay given the price. Just be sure that your expectations match what you are paying. If you want high fidelity and comfort and range, you will be better off paying up for another model.

Great for TV watching; wish I’d ordered them sooner5
These headphones are clearly not intended for listening to music at high quality. But I have been using them to listen to my TV, and am delighted with the ease of setup, ease of use, long battery life, and apparent immunity from interference.

You can’t use them outside the room, and the sound quality is good but not great. Perfect for TV. Even if obstacles partly block the infrared path, the sound continues uninterrupted. The headphones are comfortable and light, and run for many hours before recharging.

I am totally satisfied with the product, and only wish I had ordered something like this years ago!

Incredible processor for the money. Absolutely the best bang for buck CPU on the market right now. I laughed when this thing opened Photoshop in a couple of seconds. It eats anything in its path and blitzes through games. As a test, I opened about 20 applications (including Photoshop with it’s heavy memory requirements) and switched quickly between programs in order to try and trip the CPU up. While I did this, I was playing music from a playlist of several thousand songs, painting/editing an image in PS, and most importantly, running Windows XP in a virtual machine inside Windows 7. 1GB RAM was dedicated to XP, along with 64MB of graphics memory. Would you believe it, there was no lag. Awesome.

I’m using it with a Gigabyte GA-P55 UD3R board, 2 x 2GB Patriot Viper II ‘Sector 5′ 1600MHz RAM, and Samsung’s (latest) Spinpoint F3 hard drive (model HD501HJ). OS is Windows 7 32-bit. The whole thing runs beautifully! Just a heads up — Windows 7 32-bit will only use 3.5GB RAM. No use buying more than 4GB in a 32-bit environment, and you need to make sure you buy RAM that will run at 1.65V or less. Do your homework before buying.

Had this thing doing 4GHz on the stock cooler with just a minor bump in voltage, mainly just to see how well it overclocks and scales with voltage increases. No complaints at all. The cooler will definitely be replaced as soon as funds permit. The stock Intel cooler is abysmal. I would not recommend anything but a minor OC using it. The cooler to buy for this CPU is the Prolimatech Megahalems, which isn’t cheap, but those looking for superior performance need look no further. The Megahalems is the best choice.

Dynamic overclocking using Turbo Mode is excellent. The stock multiplier for the 750 is 20x. Using a Gigabyte P55 board, the multiplier goes as high as 24x when dynamically overclocking. Power consumption at idle during light tasks such as web surfing and playing music is fantastic. According to Everest, it uses just under 7 watts at idle. I feel this is an important point considering the current state of the economy. Any saving on electricity bills is worth thinking about unless you have money to burn. My sweet spot seems to be 148 BCLK (2.94GHz). At this speed, the CPU is able to dynamically overclock up to around 3.5Ghz and then lower the multiplier down to 9x when idle, which of course lowers the frequency, which of course means lower electricity bills.

Thanks, Intel, for making a great processor at a reasonable price. An i7 system running on X58 chipset would have cost a lot more. I wasn’t prepared to pay the price because I am not a fool. I am more than happy with the i5 750, it’s a very impressive CPU that should serve anybody well for a good few years.

Fast, Cool and Easy Overclock5
Love this I5-750. It’s fast and cool. It runs under 50C under load in turbo @3.2G. Overclocked to 3.8g with stock heatsink. Convert video and play HDTV with ease.

Need to be careful with the selection of DDR3. Initially paired with A-Data 2×2G and had random blue screens. Changed to Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 and problem solved.

Stock heatsink is on the small side, but it did get the job done.

Incredible speed and Value5
This processor is part of a ground up gaming build that I’ve done and upon completion this little baby rocks. It is very fast and will quickly prove itself as something incredibly difficult to bog down. I don’t think that I have been able to push this processor to its limits yet and believe me I’ve tried. I wouldn’t waste your money or time considering a faster 1156 processor unless you have *EVERY* possible bottleneck accounted for. Believe me you won’t be dissapointed.
