I had caught snippets of Chappelle’s Indicate here and there before, but I had never made a point of actually sitting down and watching a complete episode. Then a friend of mine told me about a hilarious skit featuring Dave Chappelle as a dark white supremacist (he is blind and doesn’t know he is actually a shadowy man) ; if it was only half as silly as she said it was, I knew I had to ogle it for myself, so I soon bought myself a copy of Chappelle’s Note Season One. Not only is the skit in demand hilarious, it basically defines the type of humor Dave Chappelle brings to the comedy scene. I don’t mediate the television viewing audience has ever seen anything like this before - certainly not to the extremes that Dave Chappelle takes it. When he jokes about the fact the note has not been cancelled yet, it actually rings with a bit of truth. Very few comedians could acquire away with this type of over-the-top humor.

To say that this is aged humor is something of an understatement. Adult language abounds, and all the bleeps you heard on television are now removed - thus, the Uncensored! tagline. You’ll earn a lot of jokes centered on human anatomy - especially female anatomy. Far beyond everything else, though, is a relentless comedic skewering of racism. Some would probably deem this a racist note, actually - the “n word” is archaic in abundance, and stereotypes of blacks, Asians, whites, and other races are exploited shamelessly. The whole point of the race-based comedy, though, is to present unbiased how crude and ridiculous racist thinking and behavior really is. Some people won’t “gather it,” of course, and they will probably assume Chappelle’s Reveal is one of the most offensive things they have ever witnessed - and that’s OK. The majority of viewers, I enjoy, will “obtain it” and will join me in an extended laugh-fest that lasts throughout all twelve episodes of Season One as well as the bonus materials included in this DVD offering.
Among the gut-bustingly laughable stuff you will procure in Chappelle’s Demonstrate Season One are the antics of crack addict Tyrone Biggums (including a visit to a drug awareness day at an elementary school), Chappelle-ized scenes from hit films such as Roots and The Matrix, a news portray detailing the profound aftereffects brought about by the paying of reparations for slavery, “Gigantic Moments in Hookup History,” a “Trusty World” episode featuring one really white guy living with five crazy African-Americans, a hard-hitting documentary detailing the racism of illustrious animal performers, a documentary covering mountainous inner city gang wars of the 1980s, an interracial episode of Trading Spouses, numerous Chappelle-ized television ads, Ask a Gloomy Dude features with comedian Paul Mooney, a hilarious seek at the international Player Hater Ball, and of course a lot of rude jokes about drugs and bodily functions. The only unpleasant thing about these episodes is the fact that they are sometimes rather short. Chappelle featured rap and hip-hop musical guests on each prove, but those segments are not included on nine of the twelve episodes you win here (and it’s only a half-hour expose to initiate with) .

The comedy is a diminutive uneven at times. A few skits never really acquire fire and are thus forgettable, but the grand majority of the material here will have you rolling in the aisles. Even the kind of toilet humor that normally isn’t that laughable will have you in stitches because Chappelle unbiased keeps going to the well so many times that he makes it amusing despite itself.
Five of the episodes advance with audio commentary by Dave Chappelle and the show’s co-creator Neal Brennan (who is white, by the plot), as does the extra 29-minute feature of bloopers and deleted scenes. I was actually a puny disappointed by the audio commentary; it was informational but not as droll as I had expected. The bloopers and deleted scenes were also less than hilarious - but I realized long ago (thanks to Dick Clarke and Ed McMahon) that bloopers really aren’t very laughable powerful of the time. All these extras are unbiased icing on the cake, though, as the twelve episodes of the exhibit more than develop this Season One collection worth the money. Heck, it’s worth it for honest the blind, gloomy white supremacist feature by itself.
Dave Chappelle is, undoubtedly, one of the most gallant and luminous comedians working today. At first sight (or listen), his humor may seem offensive or like small more than toilet humor, but if you dig a slight deeper you’ll realize that Dave is simply saying the things so many Americans would Appreciate to say, but can’t.

Chappelle’s Present is one of my popular shows on television. Dave’s sense of humor breaks the color boundries and he’s not shrinking to attack anyone for a laugh. Whites, blacks, Asian…whoever you are, you’re a target, and that’s the beauty of it. By not singling out anyone, Dave has made a point to accessible enough for EVERYONE. Determined, it’s controversial and yes, it can be uncouth, but it’s also hilarious and only the most uptight of people who engage everything at face value could possibly be offended by it.
Dave tackles everything from racism to R. Kelly in the first season and it’s some of the most refreshing, knowing television humor I’ve seen in years. His ability to inspect inward and amble fun at himself, as well as everyone else, only makes it funnier. Nothing in the present should be taken too seriously. From it’s over-exaggerated racial stereotypes to it’s parodies, everything is done with a huge deal of humor and, most importantly, intellect.
Chappelle’s Demonstrate is a shining portion of television and kudos should be given to Comedy Central for bringing it out on DVD and, most importantly, giving Dave enough creative control over his reveal to say and do the things he does and keeping it on the air.
