I realize that many Fred Astaire fans may not agree that DADDY LONG LEGS is his best film made without Ginger Rogers. But I stand by that concept. The film is a delight, lavishly produced, with an great script and cast, and some outstanding musical sequences.

DADDY LONG LEGS is the memoir of third-generation multi-millionaire Jervis Pendleton (Astaire) who, while on a good-will ambassadorial slouch to France, observes and is charmed by young Julie Andre (Leslie Caron), who lost her parents during World War II and has been raised in a countryside orphanage. Jervis lavishes material encourage on Julie, bringing her to the U.S. and sending her to a women’s college. Yet he doesn’t command himself to Julie, who knows her benefactor only as “Daddy Long Legs.” Then the two meet at a college dance, and romance–and complications–follow.

DADDY LONG LEGS was Astaire’s only film for 20th Century-Fox, and the studio gave him a advantageous supporting cast, including Terry Moore, Fred Clark, and the peerless Thelma Ritter. The film’s script is by Henry and Phoebe Ephron, parents of today’s celebrated writer/director Nora Ephron (SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, YOU’VE GOT MAIL) . The script is witty and tender and features two wonderfully developed central characters, who are brought to life beautifully by Astaire and Caron. This was (sadly) the last musical in which Caron showed her dancing talents, but she also shows here the abundant acting talent that has sustained her career to the prove day. And Astaire, too, displays the outstanding acting abilities that were unfortunately always overshadowed by his dwelling as the screen’s leading male dancer.

Good as the rest of the movie is, it’s the musical portions that really hold DADDY LONG LEGS to the heights. First, there are two lavish ballet sequences choreographed by Caron’s dance mentor, Roland Petit. The second features a distraught Caron searching for Astaire in settings representing Paris, Hong Kong and Rio. Caron’s abilities are on excllent prove here (although I leave to dance critics the ask of the sequence’s precise artistic merit) . The other dance sequence is an humorous and incandescent daydream showing Caron’s musings about who her benefactor might be: a Texas millionaire, an international playboy, or her guardian angel. The “angel” segment is particularly outstanding, featuring salubrious dancing, a lavish setting, and the bravura orchestral accompaniment of Alfred Newman and the 20th Century-Fox orchestra.

Even more satisfying than the ballets, though, are Astaire and Caron’s “celebrated” dance duets, the romantic “Something’s Gotta Give” and the college dance ensemble, “The Sluefoot.” The two dancers create a valid pair, and their work together conveys great of the same exhiliration and joy that Astaire helped acquire during those legendary 1930s dances with Rogers. And adding to the magic of both numbers are Johnny Mercer’s friendly songs–”Something’s Gotta Give” has, of course, become a “standard,” while “The Sluefoot” features an humorous lyric corpulent of Mercer’s distinctive vernacular wordplay. In addition, the film also makes splendid employ of Mercer’s pretty ballad “Dream,” which had actually been written as a pop tune ten years earlier.

As other reviewers have celebrated, DADDY LONG LEGS has a long running time, over two hours. But I appreciate every magical moment of a film that is certainly one of Astaire’s best.

The point of a Fred Astaire movie is Fred Astaire dancing. Daddy Long Legs is an discouraged attempt to do two additional things. First, to pick advantage of the emerging popularity of Leslie Caron, who had caught the American public’s attention with her first movie, An American in Paris, made when she was fair 20. Caron at that age had an endearing, innocent quality, a scrumptious accent, and the American public loved it. Second (and in order to attain the first point), to meld Astaire’s style of easy, dazzling sophistication with what Caron was most comfortable with, ballet. The result is a musical that has many apt things, but is probably one of the weaker of the Fred Astaire films.

Jervis Pendleton III (Fred Astaire), a rich, charming, middle-aged American businessman from a mainline family of inherited wealth, comes across an orphanage in France while on a high-level government-sponsored inch to Paris. By chance he sees a young woman taking care of the orphans and is charmed by her vitality and simplicity. The girl, he learns, is 18 years veteran and is called Julie Andre (Leslie Caron) . She is an orphan, too. When he realizes her future is probably to age into eventually running the orphanage herself or to marry a paunchy French farmer, he takes steps to mosey her to America, enroll her in unusual Walston College and glimpse to it that she has every advantage. All this he does anonymously. Then he forgets about her. His assistant, Griggs (Fred Clark) and Griggs’ assistant, Alicia Pritchard (Thelma Ritter), retain track of Julie, monitor her progress and file the letters she writes to her anonymous benefactor, whom she has advance to call Daddy Long Legs. Eventually, the two meet. Jervis realizes he loves Julie. Julie realizes she loves Jervis and that he had been her benefactor. After a few misunderstandings are cleared up, they dance away together to the strains of Johnny Mercer’s “Dream.”

Why is this movie, for me, so unsatisfying? First, the age dissimilarity is noticeable. Astaire was 56 when he made the movie; Caron was 24. Well, Astaire was 58 when he made Comic Face with Audrey Hepburn. She was 28, but the disparity there wasn’t so apparent. With Daddy Long Legs, I deem it’s because Caron, at this point in her career, wasn’t a very suited actress. She seems unformed, both as an actress and as a person. To indicate excitement, she simply shakes her hands and cries, “Ooo la la!.” Playing against a man 32 years older than she, she impartial seems too malleable for comfort. Second, Astaire was a tall dance stylist, but ballet-influenced routines never showed him at his best. Caron was a competent ballet dancer and there are two long ballet sequences for her, one enthralling Astaire, to exhibit her off. They were choreographed by Roland Petit to suit her strengths. In my view, they’re journeyman works. When paired with Astaire for two dances, Caron seems stiff and sometimes looks like she’s concentrating on what she’s doing. They objective don’t manufacture a generous match. Third, the movie is long, over two hours. Remarkable of the time is spent with Julie Andre. Once Andre’s character and spot are established, however, there’s not great to withhold us interested with her.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Daddy Long Legs! Click Here

And why is this movie worth looking at? Well, first, Astaire is a joy to glimpse even if he’s fair walking down the street. He has three superb dance routines. “History of the Beat” is a speedily tap number that also shows his skill at the drums, not to mention with drum sticks. He can get drumsticks do things in a dance that most dancers can’t do with their feet. Then there’s “Sluefoot,” a jitterbug number at the college dance. It’s satisfying to search for the passe smoothie point to the youngsters how things are really done. And there’s “Something’s Gotta Give,” a romantic, handsome dance number, sung by Astaire and then performed with Caron. If it’s not at the level of “I’m Extinct Fashioned,” which he did with Rita Hayworth more than a decade earlier, it’ll do. Second, there are the songs written by Johnny Mercer. They’re intelligent, hip and easy to listen to. One, “Something’s Gotta Give,” hit the charts and became a classic. A tremendous song Mercer wrote earlier, “Dream,” drifts in and out of the movie like a wisp of sleepy romance. Third, Astaire is backed by two gigantic Hollywood character actors, Fred Clark as his aroused right-hand man and Thelma Ritter as the tough talking secretary who finally takes things in hand.

All in all, Daddy Long Legs has a number of splendid things. After watching the movie once, however, I reflect you’re going to want to exhaust the fast-forward button to regain to them. The DVD features an grand relate and audio. The most essential extra is a film commentary which includes Astaire’s daughter and archival commentary by Mercer.

Customer Reviews:

Great Laptop!5
I have owned many other laptops but this one is really special. The price is great, it was delivered to me in a day, and I was online and getting things done in less than half an hour. Easy to use, great keyboard, and I love the number keypad on the side (no need to purchase anything separate if you use the number keys often). The screen size is great and the quality of the graphics is exceptional. I’ve only owned it a few days but I absolutely love this laptop and would recommend it to anyone!

Great Laptop-Happy!5
I did some research on laptops for good reviews and this laptop had really good reviews.
I was going to get a Dell Inspirion 15, but after doing some research, I settled on
this Samsung 530. So far, I have found nothing that I do not like about this laptop.
I love the dark red color for a change. The keypad is very easy and comfortable to use.
The wide screen is nice and the graphics etc. show up so clearly and bright. It is quite
a solid and well built computer as far as I can tell. It is lighter than my old Dell which
will help when traveling through airports, etc. Just an all around good laptop for me and
my uses and for the price I wanted to pay. The price on Amazon was the cheapest I could find.
I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

fast delivery5
I was happy that the computer was delivered fast. My previous puchases from other Amazon vendors took very long. The computer is light and beautiful like everything that Samsung makes. It works fine except for the DVD/CD slot that gets stuck and needs to be pressed a few times before it opens. I have not seen that problem before in my several Sony computers. Otherwise it is a delight.

Quirky detective Adrian Monk has only one more season of obsessive-compulsive detection left. Originate mourning now, because it’s tranquil one of the best shows on TV.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monk: Season Seven! Click Here

In the meantime, the seventh season of his dramedy/mystery series holds up well and shows minute signs of its age. It’s got everything you’d put a question to of “Monk” — unique phobias, personal crises (shot in the leg!), lots of hilarious writing, bizarre mysteries, and the celebration of Mr. Monk’s one-hundredth case.

Monk is having more distress than ever after Dr. Kroger unexpectedly dies, and the neighbor girl starts playing the piano. So he decides to occupy the house of an used man who recently fell down the stairs. Unfortunately, some creepy people want to earn their greedy hands on whatever is hidden in that house — and they’ll slay his dream-house to do it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monk: Season Seven! Click Here

Unfortunately (for Monk) it’s the least outlandish case he encounters this season. He has to deal with (in no particular order) : a murdered homeless man, miraculous fountains, lottery murders, a stolen bike at a biotech lab, submarine “suicides,” exploding grills, protecting a boxer, the impossible destroy of Monk’s annoying neighbor, and a manly-bonding football game with Stottlemeyer.

And Monk struggles with his absorb problems, with the succor of his fresh therapist Dr. Bell (Hector Elizondo) and his assistant Natalie (Traylor Howard: terrible hypnosis, a friendly weak lady, a crush, a looming physical, and a half-brother escaped from prison. And Monk tries to end the parking lot where Trudy died from being demolished, only for the council-woman keen to be found murdered in the bay…

Most quirky TV series don’t survive past the first few episodes, or the first season at most. So while the seventh season of “Monk” has a few bumps in the road (such as “Mr Monk and the Bully,” where he comes across as rather too vindictive), it collected has the fair balance of humor, poignancy and brain-twisters.

The whole season is blooming distinguished a solid string of enjoyably complex abolish mysteries — baffling crimes, obscure clues, and a few original eccentricities for Monk. Despite all the kill and bittersweet moments, the episodes are peppered with some comedy as well (Randy watching the football game upside-down in the stairwell) and plenty of solid dialogue (”It’s a square tomato. You’re doing the Lord’s work!”) .

This season Monk’s biggest dilemma is his biggest phobia of all — his anxiety of being left by everyone, whether it’s a mother substitute or his beloved shrink. Fortunately Shalhoub has the skill to withhold his tragicomic character from seeming cartoonish — good-hearted, socially clueless (behold “guy banter”) and trapped in the cage of his gain fears and sorrow. The only flaw is that for some reason, Monk tends to be a wee bit more mean-spirited here.

Traylor Howard does a solid job as Monk’s assistant Elizondo is quite splendid as the replacement for Dr. Kroger, and Jason Gray-Stanford continues to be hilarious as Randy (”Ergo the killer. Is that Hungarian? “) . Ted Levine gets to indicate different side to Stottlemeyer, when the longtime cop becomes a monk (yes, the religious kind) and goofs off at tailgate parties. Not in the same episode, of course.

There’s only one more season of “Monk” to go, but the seventh is a heckuva penultimate chapter, with plenty of befuddling mysteries and irregular problems.

I don’t believe I can say it better than what others have said. Monk is simply one of the best television shows on. I must say they did exhibit a darker side of Mr. Monk in this season. The arrangement he treated Natalie on the prove when he got shot was suprisingly insensitive for a guy whose character is based on a man unable to let go of his insensible wife. One of the reasons that I admire his character is that loving devotion to his wife. Otherwise this is another edifying season of the display. Like the seasons before, I am looking forward to adding this to my home library.

I’m surprised that this movie has attracted so grand scorn. Is it comic and far-fetched? Well, duh, anyone could figure that out who’s seen only half a trailer! So, if we come by that going in, the only remaining interrogate is does it bellow sufficient entertainment value?

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Treasure! Click Here

I vote yes.

The far-fetched spot owes a substantial debt to “The DaVinci Code”, which itself owes a grand debt to a time-honored history of conspiracy theories. Long before “The DaVinci Code” was published, I’d heard all sorts of whispered tales about the Knights Templar and the Freemasons - usually gripping the Holy Grail, though.

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Treasure! Click Here

But none of that matters. This is a anecdote, pure and simple. As such, it’s well told with a helpful mix of likable and villainous characters, plus at least one you’re not too certain about. Should you inquire of a colossal record to stand up under intense scrutiny? Not bloody likely! To preserve you from thinking about the incongruities, it has lots of well-paced action.

This is also a family film. I saw it with 8 other family members ranging from preteen school kids to their grandpa (me) . Everyone had a splendid time and everyone figured we got our money’s worth.

National Fancy is proof of what us “favorite” listeners, movie goers, readers and observers have suspected for a long time; That critics are usually wrong/stupid. This movie got dreadful reviews. Not even abominable - abysmal reviews. And do you wanna know why? After everything is said and done, it’s because there’s no sex, no unfavorable language, and it’s fascinating instead of disturbing. Well we can leave them to the business of deciding what our likes and values “should” be, and we they can pontificate why movies they notion with disdain demolish up as year-end blockbusters. With that being said, I feel I should approach from a different angle. This movie is also NOT an anti-Christianity film (and I score it challenging that people would equate it as such, seeing as there are so many other mediums that are) . The lifeless and simple facts: ravishing grand everyone enthusiastic in shaping this country: from establishing it, to breaking from England, from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, to the men we’ve elected as Presidents have been Christians. ALSO, more than half the men that signed the Declaration were Masons. Simple facts. George Washington was a Mason. Ben Franklin was a master mason. Lodges were established shapely powerful everywhere across the East Cruise. There’s no blueprint to stutter these things because they happened. Coming to the conclusion that masonry is anti-Christian impartial shows a lack of knowledge on the subject (especially since most masons are Christian to originate with) . This is a completely different topic (something that I wouldn’t mind discussing with anyone via e-mail), so onto the movie.

It’s well written, engrossing, with a cliff-hanger stare into history that more than acknowledges Dan Brown. (By the plot, Dan Brown’s unusual book is on the same subject as this movie. I’m not distinct which is interdependent.) It’s well produced, well casted, with very few lagging moments. The chronicle is ample and the American historical sights are filmed very well, showing masonic influence in virtually everything our Founding Fathers did. I really don’t observe how this can be construed as negative. Perhaps critics don’t like Disney.

Seeing an early edition DVD of this movie, I can say that the special features are certainly lacking. Putting any type of “history channel” type documentary of the evolution of templars-to-masons would have been nice. Even masonry in American history would have been favorable. Basically, there’s a 5 petite mini-history that covers the same ground as the movie or is favorite knowledge. Perhaps the “special edition” will have more. The lacking special features pales to the greatness of the movie. One of the best!

Overall: 9 out of 10.

Customer Reviews:

Ok, at a bargain price3
Ok, consider that I paid about $300 for mine, it’s my #3 high-def camcorder, and I know what I’m doing… this is not a model for beginners. But I don’t think a beginner should be using any of the AVCHD models yet.. the format is too new.

This was not really the case with HDV, simply because MPEG-2 was a done deal long before HDV came along.. so the first cameras that came out were pretty good, and where improvements were made, it was in the general HD area, not the encoding format so much. AVC (also called MPEG-4 part 10, also called H.264) is generally heralded as the successor to MPEG-2, but it’s way more complex. Encoding on a PC or other dedicated hardware looks great, but you’re probably spending 3-6 hours per hour of HD video to do that encoding. Crunching this down to a small battery-powered camcorder and maintaining that quality is a work-in-progress.

THE BAD

Yeah, BD-R and BD-RE in 8cm size are expensive. But if you think of the BD-RE as a replacement for an SD card (they hold about 7.5GB), they make a little more sense… you record on it, copy the video off to another device, then erase it, just as a flash card. Eventually, BD-R will be cheap enough to compare to tape, but that’s a ways off.

Quality-wise, it’s mixed. This one is pretty awful on low-light shooting. It’s a given that virtually every HD camcorder is going to be worse in low light than a similar SD model… they’re only starting to deliver a few with decent low-light performance in the prosumer price ranges (new Canon and Pannys, about $1300). But this one’s oddly worse than you’d expect, given the decent performance in good light, and the large enough single sensor.

THE CONFUSING (for some)

If you’re not already doing Blu-Ray, this may be a pain. Windows don’t natively understand the Blu-Ray file format (it’s a new version of the UDF file system used on DVD), so you need to install the Hitachi software. Hitachi, like most CE companies, is clueless about software support, but in truth, editing video isn’t their job. If, like me, you already have Blu-Ray support in place in your video toolchain, dealing with this format is a no-brainer.

THE GOOD

Tapeless rocks, when you’re in a hurry. However, AVCHD on DVD is a horrible idea — it’s nowhere near enough storage… you’ll get about 20 minutes. Blu-Ray is the right answer for tapeless HD using a 8cm disc. I’m using this one mainly for quick stuff… to offload my way more expensive cameras when quality isn’t THAT critical.

As for quality… it’s a mixed bag. In the sunlight, this camera delivers a decent enough HD image. Like any first-generation AVCHD camcorder, you’re not going to match HDV quality on fact motion — there will be more artifacts. Given this is an older model, of course, factor that in on what you’re paying.

I didn’t mind the user interface at all.. it’s fairly simplistic, as you’d expect on a consumer model. The one quirk, if your used to tape, is the control for selecting clips to play back… it’s a very non-obvious button. I missed it, first time out… guess I should have RTFMed, but hey, where’s the fun in that.

Another plus… this model will shoot SD on DVD-R or DVD-RAM, which is rather usual these days; most AVCHD/tapeless models are HD-only. You don’t get the choice… it’s HD on BD, SD on DVD.

The body and styling is kind of nice.. a bit weird, but it grows on you. It has a covered, full-sized cold shoe, and works great with an external mic like an Azden SMX-10. You could obviously use any 3.5mm plug mono or stereo mic (far as no, there’s no plug-in power, you’ll need a self-powered mic), but a larger mic could be visible in the shot, if used on-camera. I never recommend shooting with any built-in camera audio, so I can’t really tell you if it’s any good or not.

So, my bottom line: at the original $1300 or so, this was a bad camera, no question, largely based on the low light performance. Today, you can get 3rd generation AVCHD models, which do a much better job at encoding without artifacts… some of these start at around $500-$600. Unless disc is a big advantage, skip this and go with a Canon HF-200 (about $600) or a Panny HDC-SD9 (about $500) or a Sony HDR-CX7 or CX12 rather than pay the prices in the $700s or $800s for this I’ve seen around. But for the price of an SD camcorder, $300 or so, it’s not a bad unit.

Hitachi has a new model BD camcorder, which is supposedly much improved, and also records to SDHC flash cards as an alternate. If you’re looking for a better unit, that should be seeing the same kind of technology improvements as the other 3rd generation AVCHD models.

Like any bit of technology, you need to do your homework. AVCHD is new enough some video editors still don’t support it. Even when they do, it’s very CPU intensive, so don’t be surprised when your dual-core CPU is driven to its knees. Using an intermediate video format, like CineForm, Sony MXF (or other high bitrate MPEG-2 variations), isn’t a bad idea if you have a complex project. Blu-Ray media is still expensive, though it’s been falling.. you’re not being a wise consumer if you don’t bother to price consumables of any kind before buying the device that consumes them.

What a waste of money!1
There is virtually no support from Hitachi on this product. You are totally on your own. There is no documentation for the software so you must be savvy enough to figure it out for yourself. The interface is extremely cumbersome and time consuming. Also, I should have looked at the price of the discs before buying this product. $25 for a one hour disc??? I wish I had never wasted my money on this camera.

WHY? HDD (HARD DISK DRIVE) PERFECT1
NO reason to GO to a DVD/BD/VIDEO TAPE recorder anymore…….. If you have been following the DESKTOP ways, you know your going to get a better deal with a HARD DISK DRIVE (VIDEO RECORDER).

On your computer you don’t copy to a CD anymore, you copy to WHAT??
Thumb Drive, SD Card, EXTERNAL 300 GB hard drive from western digital (POWERED BY THE USB CORD!!!)

Just don’t drop it, you will risk damage and OOC (OUT OF COMMISSION).

I don’t own this item. The only reason I bought a camcorder was for the whole purpose of not CHANGING DISKS!

GO with the JVC 20GB Everio… must be cheapier by now; and, you will get 4.5 hours ULTRA FINE quality. HD is getting over rated when it comes to recording on your personal life. (The 40 GB Everios must be more economical by now)

The Everio is compact and it has been holding strong for 3 years. Dropped it once for the first time, a week ago… Hasn’t complained yet.

For Record:

I don’t record the whole Aerosmith concert. Why would I, better to enjoy it.

Recording your kid growing up in HD tv won’t make an Academy Award either… it could make Funniest Home Video Entries easier though…

Never HAVE TO CHANGE DISC! Thats the only thing to remember. SOON, SOLID STATE DRIVE (SDD).

Stop waisting money and changing discs like you change diapers on a newborn.

Complete Materials5
I am writing a review to help clarify what is shipped with the book. Some reviewers expressed discontent that Amazon does not include the Atlas. I received my order yesterday and it included the textbook, the Atlas, and the My A&P CD. This is the complete package and is the same as the package sold at the campus bookstore.

Great textbook for a good price.5
This is an excellent textbook. All of the diagrams and examples are well organized and the diction is such that you will never get lost while reading. The price of this book though was what made this a good deal. The textbook CD, online key as well as a detailed body atlas are packaged along with the textbook for a better studying experience. I did need a lab manual however but it made sense that it would not be packaged with the textbook considering the price that the textbook was sold. Overall I was very pleased with this.

NOT EVERYTHING THAT IS IN PICTURE SHOWN-BUT 3 BONUS ITEMS3
Hi. I received my order today. However, the customer photo contains more items than I received in my package. I got the hard cover edition plus 3 bonus items which are: CD-ROM-INTERACTIVE PHYSIOLOGY 10-SYSTEM SUITE which has interactive tutorials and quizzes, ATLAS OF HUMAN BODY, AND A ‘MY A&P ACCESS CODE CARD’. So will have to purchase the Lab Manual separately. Would have been cool if it had been included, maybe person who posted pics bought it seperately but just included in the pic.??
