Gritty and Utterly Realistic Fights
“The Hunted” is a fantastically gritty, pulse-pounding chase film with refreshing realism, and is a fine return to form for the occasionally brilliant Friedkin, who has not been this on top of things since “To Live and Die in L.A.” I will not here attempt to offer a synopsis of the film, as that has been done to death in this forum, but will instead offer some commentary.

First, those complaining that this film does not really have much of a plot, or that the plot of this film is confusing and messy, have entirely missed the point. William Friedkin was not here trying to make a story-driven film, at all. As for the second complaint, Friedkin has stated that he purposefully wanted much of the film to remain ambiguous. The viewer, for instance IS NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW whether the del Toro character is crazy or not. Those complaining that they can’t figure out whether he’s right in his suspicions or not have entirely missed the point of the film. Friedkin here was trying to develop an intense, gritty, extended, mano-y-mano conflict between two men who are clearly more dangerous than anyone else in their environment. Jones’ character, fearing he’s found himself in a Dr. Frankensteinian scenario, having created a monster only he can stop, feels both responsible to bring in del Toro and guilty for hunting a man he essentially feels fatherly towards. Jones’ character could train del Toro’s to kill, but, after having done so, he is unable (or unwilling) to help him psychologically. This is insufficient training, an insufficient initiation into manhood, resulting in the playing out of the Abraham/Isaac mythos. Unsophisticated viewers insisting on a “good guy”/”bad guy” take on the film will likely not enjoy this movie. Jones’ character is not the “good guy” and del Toro’s is not the “bad guy”; they are just both tormented men. Some viewers have interpreted Jones’ character as the good guy, but just as many will see del Toro’s character as a good guy being hunted down by his own government which he has just finished serving. This ambiguity of not having a clear cut “good guy” and “bad guy” is exactly what Friedkin was going for. Life is not black and white. In fact such Hollywoodian portrayals are naive and absurd.

Those complaining that Jones’ character is unrealistic should watch the film with the commentary turned on, and learn about the real man that Jones’ character is based on. Was it unrealistic that the two characters quickly fashioned knives out of raw materials in the wilderness? …Not when the actors were trained to be able to do such themselves in real life.

What “The Hunted” has to offer the viewer is an absolutely enthralling action film harkening back to the grittier days of action movies (such as The French Connection or Bullitt). The main character is fascinating to watch. He’s full of nervous energy that he is constantly shaking out. He can’t stay still; he’s twitchy. Something is clearly bothering him. He knows how utterly dangerous his adversary is, and feels responsible for teaching him the destructive maneuvers he knows. The army trains men to be cold-blooded killers. This changes some men. It’s a door you can’t walk back through. The army does not train them to reenter society. That’s left to them, and not all of them can effectively pull it off. Benecio del Toro’s character thinks the government is stalking him, spying on him. We don’t know if this is true or if he’s merely snapped. What we do know is that he is an extraordinarily dangerous man who is out on the loose.

Martial arts fans should take special note: this movie has the absolute best and most realistic hand-to-hand fight scenes this critic has ever scene (I say this having studied many martial arts in real life). The art on display is Kali knife fighting. Both Tommy Lee Jones and Benecio del Toro trained in the art and did the fighting in the film. It shows. (Allegedly Jones broke del Toro’s wrist in one of their fights!) These are the most gritty and breathtaking fight scenes you’ll ever see (the first of which I would pick as the best fight scene in film history). They are utterly realistic, and look very much the way a real martial arts fight looks (i.e. brutal and short). No nonsense wires or high-flying kicks here, just deadly street fighting.

The tracking scenes in this film are wonderful, relishing the details. The cinematography is downright breathtaking, and the soundtrack is one of the greatest and most effective in years. Friedkin makes the viewer feel that even after the antagonist is brought into the city that he’s still in a wilderness…a wilderness of concrete blocks instead of trees and moss. Once the chase is on, it doesn’t stop until the end of this wonderfully fun movie. Ignore the negative reviews and check this one out!

Interesting Thriller
From the first frames of this interesting and somewhat offbeat movie, I found myself fascinated by the setting in the snow-graced forests of the Pacific northwest, where retired government martial-arts and assassin training expert Tommy Lee Jones walks with both grace and purpose through the winter splendor of the chilly landscape. However unlikely the action as depicted in the scenes, it was a marvelous set of opening scenes, providing a key insight into the lead character’s humanity and perspective. Little would I know that this was perhaps the most satisfying aspect of this taut suspense thriller. Lee is soon whisked away almost involuntarily to help solve a pair of horrific murders of seasoned and well-armed hunters in the area, only to discover the assailant was one of the expert assassins he helped train. From there the mystery begins to deepen, and Lee finds himself locked into a death struggle on a number of levels both with the assassin, played well by the charismatic Benico Del Toro.

Del Toro’s character is haunted by memories of atrocities he witnessed in Kosovo, and his former government handlers are trying to convince Lee that Del Toro has simply gone renegade. Yet there are signs that there may be some truth to Del Toro’s suspicions, as told to Lee indicating that he had been set up, that the hunters he executed in the forest were in fact government assassins come to terminate him. The viewer is taken on a whirlwind ride through forest, suburb, and through a variety of cityscapes, and a few of the chase scenes are entertaining, amusing, and quite ingenuous. The plot sometimes suffers from more bullet holes than any of Del Toro’s victims, but if you can suspend your critical faculties enough to enjoy the fireworks, you will likely enjoy this potboiler effort at government intrigue gone horribly wrong. Enjoy!

Plot flaws galore.
I live right across the river from where this movie was shot and in that regard I enjoyed all the referrences to places I know and have been. But there are so many plot holes in this movie it was hard for me to recommend it highly. Both lead characters should have died long before the end of the movie. I suppose super soldiers have incredible endurance and twice as much blood as most people. Benicio Del Toro should have drowned when he jumped into the Columbia River. If the impact didn’t kill him the current would have pulled him down. I know this river personally and the current is incredibly strong. Tommy Lee Jones character said Benicio could “swim like a fish” but I doubt he could breath like one. Also, Benicio is being chased by agents and cops so what does he do, he builds a fire and fashions a blade. Good idea. Tommy gets stabbed in the leg by a long, sharp stick which apparently only made him angry because he didn’t bleed from that wound thereafter. Then he falls onto some rocks on his way down a large waterfall, then pulls himself out and shortly gets into a knife fight with Benicio. It is only near the end that the editing and plot take a back seat to reality. Am I supposed to believe that Benicio set an elaborate trap of two logs that come smashing together a la “Return of the Jedi”? I realize that he isn’t your normal human soldier but hiding might have been a smarter plan. He is able to blend with the shadows, yes? Then there is the scene where Tommy is just dripping with water, and only moments later he is completely dry. Anyway…it wasn’t a complete waste of time. In fact, the fight sequences were enjoyable, albeit bloody. And there were some other scenes that were fairly well done. It just didn’t make much sense. Blood-loss usually causes people to feint or go into shock. I’ve even heard that some people die from it. It’s true. I think I saw it on the Discovery Channel.

Much Better Than I Heard
I had heard a lot of bad things and bad reviews about this movie. I was suprised when I watched it that it was as good as it was. I thought Timothy Olyphant did a good job and that the girl who played his love interest was also good and HOT. The guy that plays T-Bag on the TV show Prison Break was also good. I have never played this game but I thought the story was pretty solid. It kind of reminded me of The Bourne Identity as he is a trained super assassin from a place that churns them out and he has flash backs of good and bad things.

Anyway, the action rocked and it was exciting and entertaining beginning to end. It was pretty good and fun to watch.

This was a hit with me
I didn’t expect to be impressed with this movie because in my mind it was simply another flick made from a video game but man, I was blown away! In fact it was so enjoyable that ten minutes after finishing it I wanted to see it again, and that rarely happens. Never mind the few geographical errors, this movie is all action and there is no waste of precious minutes on mindless love scenes - the one actually has one cut short by the main hero and it was humorous, how he was all business, him being this monk killer for hire who lives a chaste life. In a way it was like a James Bond character who actually didn’t try to bed all the babes, impressive. And Timothy Olyphant was flawless, even thought I prefer men with longer hair he looked cool and totally acted the part, mysterious, brooding but with a heart in there somewhere.

Bald and serious, dressed in an expensive suit, red silk tie and an impeccably crisp white shirt the Hitman is a force to be reckoned with. He’s not too emotional but rather straightforward with a little bit of a charm threw in as he works his meticulously planned hits until one day everything changes. In a very short time the predator turns into juicy prey and he must use all of his killer skills to catch the bad guys. Trouble is finding out who the bad guys are, I liked watching this movie without knowing anything about it, but I will just say it involved the Russian secret police and the Interpol chasing the Hitman while someone from the inside of his secret agency was trying to put him in the harm’s way. The twists and turns, betrayals laced with action and ferocious weaponry all in one were a feast for the mind and eyes.

This movie was like a day at the beach, the bullets spraying the sky like the morning surf hitting the warm sand. Action galore and clever fights using all sorts of guns and ammo , hand combat and even a sword scene all mashed beautifully, it is all art, a ballet almost , full of grace with deadly intentions, I loved it and can’t say enough good things about it.

This Was Amazing
Yet another game to movie adaptation, but this one has a major difference. It’s actually pretty damn cool.

Timothy Olyphant fits perfectly into the role of Agent 47, an orphan who is taken in and trained by an agency that trains children to be the most stealthy and deadly hitmen in the world. Agent 47 is the best of the best of all the Hitmen raised and trained by “The Organization.” He is called in to perform on a hit on the Russian President Mikhail Belicoff, however the hit is a setup and 47 finds himself on the run from Interpol & The Russian Secret Police.
While on the run, 47 endeavours to get revenge and find the truth about who set him up and why. This unravels a tangled web of lies and deceipt as one by one he kills those who have done him wrong, including those who are also members of “The Organisation.”
During his streak he comes across an unlikely companion in Nika Boronina who we come to see gives 47 emotions and feelings that he’s never encountered before.

This is a really good movie and something that at times keeps so close to the game that you come to think this is a game in itself. Timothy Olyphant plays 47 incredibly and although 47 is conventionally an emotionless character but within the movie we are given emotion that is being held back. That may be a bit of an oxymoron but the way in which Olyphant portrays it is amazing as it’s a character that has all this emotion built up inside but is trying to hold it back.
The action, dialogue and cinematography of this film I found to be incredibly intelligent. It has moments in it that you can identify to the game and there’s one point in particular which the game itself is given a nod. 47 breaks through the window of a hotel room and it cuts to a vision of kids playing the video game hitman.

Overall this was a very, very good film which I have to admit I didn’t really have high hopes for in the beginning. I am glad to say my preconceptions were changed within the first 5 minutes into the movie and I am sure to watch it again.

You should check it out whether you’re a fan of the game or not, it’s still a pretty special piece.

Great Adaptation of an American Masterpiece
Since Miller helped write the screenplay and one of his sons produced or coproduced the movie, it shouldn’t be a shock that the movie is so faithful to the original text where it needs to be and broadens the story where it needs to, as well. Miller knows how to write for the stage, and he apparently knows how to write for the screen, also. After seeing so many “classic” books and/or plays butchered by Hollywood, this movie is a real delight, despite its morbid and all-too-realistic story. This movie has become an essential to my Grade 11 American Literature classes, spectacularly complementing their reading of Miller’s play and several pieces from the Salem Witch Trial era.

Ignoring the play’s historic flaws and inaccuracies (that’s another debate for another time), Miller brilliantly captured the essence of the Salem Witch Trials in his play and has conveyed them to the screen. Hatred, fear, jealousy, hypocrisy, religious mania, attention-seeking, conviction, strength, determination, repentance, and a host of other emotions and character traits are vividly brought to life by a superb cast: Daniel Day-Lewis is a great John Proctor (nobody else could have done better), Winona Ryder is very good as the conniving and bitter Abigail Williams, Joan Allen was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth Proctor, and Paul Scofield should have won an Oscar for his cold-hearted portrayal of Justice Danforth. The conflict between Proctor and Danforth is what sustains the play’s momentum for the second and third acts (about the last hour and fifteen minutes of the movie), and Lewis and Scofield bring that epic conflict to life: the classic good v. evil, with the sides getting somewhat mixed up as to who is who. . . . Lewis plays the flawed hero to Scofield’s self-righteous and vindictive villain with palpable energy. How Scofield’s performance was overlooked by the Academy is just another example of their oblivion. He gives me the willies with his methodical, calculating delivery of Miller’s chilling dialogue: “Who weeps for these weeps for corruption” (among a bunch of great lines from the play/movie).

This isn’t simply a play enacted in front of movie cameras (like Death of a Salesman). The director uses his camera very effectively, capturing some great close-up moments, unique perspectives and camera angles, and bringing a sense of “bigness” to the whole story. The play can seem very isolated, with its sparse sets and black-and-white costumes. Miller also expands the movie to begin well before the play does (giving the movie-goer information that he must have assumed the play-reader would already have) and extending it beyond the conviction of Proctor to include his execution, along with that of Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey. Just as a side note, each of those three was hanged in a separate group in the original trials–great symbolism from Miller, including each larger original group of victims in the final trio. Also great symbolism in Proctor’s Christ-like physical placement in the middle of the two “sinners,” as he takes their sins upon him–the crucifixion is represented very effectively.

Bottom line: You won’t see a better adaptation of a play to movie anytime soon. Nothing essential is left out, and some nice details are brought in to give the movie a distinction from its original source, the play. If you can make it through this play and not be outraged by the injustice and hypocrisy, then you have a heart as cold as Danforth’s. What Miller would likely want you to do is apply that outrage to similar situations that go on every day, just as he intended with his original play (the McCarthy hearings, the “Red” Scare). At least watch the movie, though.

“Because it’s my name and I cannot have another . . .”
If you can watch this film and not go through every emotion you own, then you need to check yourself for a pulse.

Of course, I’m being a bit silly with my opening to this review, but the reality is that this is a film that will touch you on every imaginable level if you can get past the era in which the story takes place and the hysteria of that time period. Rehashing the plot is a waste at this point as almost every student in America has read this play in their 11th grade English class, but this story is as relevant today as the day it was written and the time in which the story takes place.

Arthur Miller wrote this story as an indictment against McCarthism and although that time has past we still have similar witch hunts today and, sadly, always will. 1970’s had us pointing fingers, thanks to Anita Bryant, anyone we thought might be a closet homosexual. The 1980’s had us pointing fingers at anyone who had more wealth than we did (much like in “The Crucible”). The 1990’s had us pointing fingers at family members based on so-called “recovered memories” of sexual abuse (later proven to psychological hogwash, but a clever way to get back at and smear the name of a family member we didn’t like). And this century has us pointing fingers at anyone Middle Eastern as a terrorist. I recall immediately after 9/11 our leading law enforcement official, John Ashcroft, going on national television and warning us to be on the look out for “those that don’t belong.” To me, that was government sanctioned racism at its worst. I was hurt by 9/11, but I was hurt even more by that reaction to it. This cuts to the heart of Miller’s story wherein anyone can point a finger at anyone and destroy a life, a family, a community for personal gain and that gain can be financial, emotional, political, or whatever. As long as we have people that are motivated by hate, fear, and power, this story will remain timeless and will never be irrelevant.

As far as the performances go, I can’t think of finer acting off the top of my head than those in this film and most especially by Daniel Day-Lewis whose final lines will stir your very soul and Joan Allen who can play some one so cold with such depth of feeling. Like Lewis, her final scenes are unforgettable. You simply can’t walk away from this film the same person you were before you saw it. It is truly that moving. All the supporting cast members are familiar faces and all do an outstanding job, especially Winona Ryder in what is probably the best performance of her young career.

her character’s obsessive and selfish desire to have the one man she can’t sets the ball in motion in this story and she, sadly, has no real regrets. She is conflicted in knowing that her actions are basically wrong, but that they are still somehow justifiable. Ryder truly captures the soul, or lack thereof, of this character. She is extraordinary here.

The screenplay is adapted by Miller who wrote the play itself and makes the shift from play to screen seamlessly. The direction is confident and appropriately claustrophobic. He allows his actors do their thing without heavy handed influence. The score is terrific and stirring, and the cinematography has almost a documentary feel to it.

Rent or buy this modern masterpiece; it is worthy of your attention.

One last note. So many know this story, but, surprisingly, few seem to adequately understand it’s title. I thought the below might be helpful:

The American Heritage Dictionary defines “crucible” as:
1. A severe test, as of patience or belief; a trial.
2. A place, time, or situation characterized by the confluence of powerful intellectual, social, economic, or political forces.

Brilliance achieved.
I have never seen a stage version of The Crucible (although I have read and studied the play many times), but I can safely recommend this film as the most brilliant film adaptation of a play (ranking along side ‘Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?’) that I’ve ever seen. Boasting a cast that includes Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder, Paul Schofield and Joan Allen this film managed to pass unnoticed beneath the public eye. It was directed by Nicholas Hytner (of ‘The Madness of King George’ fame) and the screenplay was written by Miller himself, if this is not enough to make the general public haul themselves off the sofa, I don’t know what is. The thing I liked most about the film was that you could finally see events that were only reported upon in the play (such as what really happened in the woods, and the trials of the lesser characters). What makes the film even more poignant is the fact that it is based on true events which took place during the Salem witch hunts. I am aware that Miller only wrote the play to comment on the McCarthy communist witch hunts (which labelled Miller himself as a left wing sympathiser), but now that the ‘red threat’ is over, the film becomes a saga about how our beliefs can influence our relationships with other people. Joan Allen was robbed of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar by Juliette Binoche, and she turns in a stunning performance as the truly holy Elizabeth Proctor, almost defiled by Winona Ryder’s equally brilliant woman scorned. My favourite among the cast was an actress I hadn’t seen before and haven’t heard of since: the actress (Karon Graves?) who played Mary Warren, the girl who knows she and her friends are lying, but when she tells the truth, Abby points the finger at her. I dare you to watch this and not enjoy it.

Hilarious film, a good overall Blu
I finally got to see this film and the Blu gave a nice first viewing, and even doing the rated/unrated back to back it still kept me laughing.

The Blu clarity and sound quality are solid and there were no failings even with the volume of night sequences. The desert shots were done adequately so there was no light saturation or blur - overall the presentation in both versions makes them a good investment for being one of the few comedies you might buy on Blu. The unrated runs eight minutes longer and contained nothing that would warrant the usual attraction for being titled as such. By the time they get to the roof to start the night there were four brief sequences added in, including some extra dialogue in the opening house scene, a little more with that abusive girlfriend and a fun spot in the hotel room. The main difference between the two would be a funny one minute scene as they take the tiger back to Tyson’s house (elevator addition). Otherwise, there are no R rated additions like some would look for.

The supplements are a mixed bag, and after investing the hour it takes to get through them all (except the commentary) none of them stand out as a must see.

Standard Special Features (2 Disc DVD and BD)
* The missing pictures. 100 added photos from the camera, a few funny ones but they felt like the pics you would screen out before you share with your buddies (10 shots from the same angle, where you get rid of the other 9 and save the best one - they keep the other 9 here).
* Map of Destruction. Has 15 spots they filmed on a selectable icon map that takes you to a brief clip regarding making-of info. The Tyson one was the most interesting for me as the others are all either too short or not interesting.
* Madness of Ken Jeong. This guy doesn’t work for me other than brief shots in a film so his “improv” here wasn’t funny.
* Action Mash-Up. A brief Stooges style mix, forgettable.
* Three Best Friends Song. Funny in a movie, not funny as a long version when they can’t sing.
* The Dan Band. The clean version of the Fame song.
* Gag Reel. Now this was funny, only goes a few minutes but they were having fun.

BD Exclusive: (BD Live)

* Cursing Mash-Up. My player took a few seconds to download/stream it and it only lasted a few seconds, most customers get a chuckle out of it when I screen it in the store, but just ok as a supplement.
* Iron Mike Online Teaser. A decent rendition of him singing the In The Air Tonight. That played well and customers thought it a much better trailer than the standard ones we have seen 100 times.

Theatrical BD Version:

* PiP Commentary with Phillips and the three main guys. I usually love commentaries but this one stunk. I was expecting a great deal of humor, funny stories and cool info, but instead they were just sitting there looking bored, especially Cooper, I honestly think he was there to watch the film. Galifianakis sat there until minute 16 before he really said anything. Every once in awhile Todd would say something interesting about the film making, but don’t watch this if you want the laughs.

A fun movie with plenty of laughs on a good Blu that for some of the low prices I have seen here and elsewhere it will feel like a good investment.

Must see
I was a little hesitant to see this movie, it seemed like one of the all too recent movies where all of the good parts are featured in the trailer, and that’s all you’ve got. So not the case. Not only was it a packed theatre at the midnight showing, but there was not any interval longer than three minutes that had a quiet audience. Nobody could stop laughing!
From Zach Galifiakanis, we had a stellar show. His ability to play the creepy weirdo is out of this world. His wolf pack speech was amazing.
The cameo from Mike Tyson was hilarious!
Don’t miss the end credits where a lot of the missing information is revealed.

The Greatest Story Ever Told…No but I’m still laughing days later.
First of all, this was a very smart, gross, dark, crude, hilarious and obnoxious film that had me in tears throughout the film. Yes, this subject has been done to death, but not to this level of enjoyment. I haven’t enjoyed a Vegas bachelor party film this much since “Very Bad Things” and I would have to rate this higher. My wife enjoyed this film as much as me and she commented how rare it is to see a film that is consistently funny from start to finish. My expectations were very high after all of the hype leading up to the release of this film and it didn’t disappoint.

The director does a great job setting the stage for a night no one can remember. Each role was cast perfectly with Zach Galifianakis stealing the show. Make sure you don’t leave early and miss the slide-show during the credits. Freaking hilarious!!!!

If you are easily offended by crude humor or you, then this isn’t the movie for you.

Suspenseful - But Completely Unoriginal
The best part about Nine Dead is that it keeps you in suspense. The downside? It’s been done before in the 2007 film Fermat’s Room.

The story is centered around nine strangers who have been kidnapped and handcuffed in a room. Every 10 minutes, their kidnapper will kill one of them, until they realize what they all have in common. Their situation is also complicated by the fact that one of the nine strangers doesn’t speak English.

The biggest problem I have with the film is that the film’s concept has already been tackled by several movies, including La Habitación de Fermat. In Fermat’s Room, four strangers are trapped in a shrinking room that will crush them to death, unless they can discover what they all have in common.

The majority of the cast has worked primarily in television, and there’s nothing particularly special about the cinematography. While the film was suspenseful, the film’s open-ended conclusion will disappoint many viewers. Not to mention that it was virtually impossible for the kidnapper to know how many of the strangers were connected. Even though I’m straight, I thought the director’s choice of which character just so happened to be a pedophile was an unnecessary stereotype and in awful taste.

Overall, the movie is worth a buck to watch through Redbox. But considering it’s light on originality, I’d consider giving it a rent before deciding to buy the DVD.

Nine Dead
A masked maniac locks nine strangers in a room together and reveals that he will kill one of them every ten minutes until they can figure out the factor that connects them all. As the clock starts to tick, the desperate prisoners scramble to solve the malevolent mystery in time to save their own lives. The acting, sets and story are quite average. Yes the movie is a lot like the idea of Saw. Actually not that bad, but not that good either.

Do not buy this
Save your money. Go get Netflix. This movie is available there as a Watch Instantly title. It’s worth watching, but be prepared for a colossal disappointment in the abrupt ending.
