Customer Reviews:

Very cool, handy and sleek new toy — but don’t throw away your Flip yet!!4
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3GCL7CCLCHZCY When Steve Jobs announced the newest generation iPod nano, he suggested that with its new video capability the nano would easily compete with the Flip Video camcorder. While someday down the line this may be a serious contender in the pocket video camera market, it’s not there yet. I took some comparison footage with the iPod nano and the standard definition Flip Mino to show why. My point in all this is not to suggest that you go buy a Flip instead of an iPod nano, but that you ask yourself what it is you really want. If you want to make videos you can upload to Youtube and you want them to look pretty decent, and you don’t care much about music or you already have an mp3 player, I wouldn’t buy this iPod just because now it has video. On the other hand, having some video capability might be enough to give this the edge over most other music players; if games are more important to you than video, though, you’d be better off with an iPod touch.

One thing you’ll notice in the footage, where I shot the same things back to back with both camcorders, is that where the Flip really shines is in low light. I shot the hamster moments at night, in a room illuminated only by a lamp. Not only did the iPod nano take grainy video, it also didn’t do any kind of white balancing and the indoor lightbulb added an orange tint to the clip; I’m not sure exactly how the Flip is designed to address this (whether it automatically adjusts white balance or just has a better average setting), but the footage shows that it captured light correctly both outdoors and indoors. If you compare the hamster shots with the Flip and with the nano, I think it’s clear that for indoor and lowlight there’s no comparison and the Flip has the nano beat hands down. The outdoor images are closer, but I think even this small video shows greater detail in the Flip video. When you blow the images up bigger there’s no comparison — the Flip looks decent even on a big screen TV, the iPod nano footage looks like it was shot with, well, a toy camera. In all fairness, that’s all it is at this point. (Note, by the way, that, like the Flip, the nano will only take video and doesn’t take photos. You can manually add photos to the nano from your computer, but you can’t use the onboard camera to capture stills.)

Another thing that bugs me a bit about the new iPod nano is the bizarre placement of the camera lens. It’s nestled down in the corner of the backside below the screen — exactly where it is most natural to hold this thing if you are shooting with it. Even if you just grasp the thing at the corners, there’s a tendency for some part of a finger to accidentally edge into the camera frame. In fact, I found that even after I was aware of this fact I kept doing it anyways — the way this thing fits in my hands just makes it likely I’ll catch an edge of a finger in my shots unless I’m conscientious about avoiding it, and that detracts from the spontaneity this is designed to take advantage of. (I even noticed I’d done it on most of the iPod nano footage for this video comparison — and I thought about doing it over, but then decided to leave it in just to show how easily it can happen.)

So, to sum up: what you really get with the iPod nano is a toy camera, fun to have in the pocket and very cool to have just in case there’s something you want to shoot, but not quite the quality we’ve come to expect from the handy pocket camcorders like the Flip Mino and the Creative Vado and the Kodak Zi8, that keep getting better and better. Video is a nice new feature on the Nano, but not really a radical innovation and not a game changer.

What makes the iPod Nano worth it is that in addition to video on the fly, you get to listen to music, you get an FM radio that works quite well and even tells you what song you are listening to, you get a voice recorder (a VERY nice feature, excellent for students who can listen to music on their way to class and then record a lecture), a decent quality mini speaker, a somewhat useful pedometer, decent game options for killing time. You don’t get any of that with the Flip! Sure, the new iPod nano is a toy … but it’s a very cool toy.

Awesome!5
Let’s face it…we are not all clones and look for different features when it comes to an MP3 player. I wanted a small, portable player for the gym. The FM Radio feature is what I have been hoping for for a very long time! I don’t need apps. I don’t need to surf the web. I need to play my tunes. Genius is a great way to create a mix for the gym. The fitness tracker is incredible. And finally I can tune in to the TVs in the gym. Love it! This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. Perfect device for my needs.

Stay away. Far away.1
When I received my new iPod, I was impressed with the sound quality vs. the old 1st gen Nano I have. (The original iPods were very “middy” sounding.)

But that is about all that is good with the unit.

The new 5th generation is incompatible with everything I own. My car’s radio has iPod integration which worked with my original iPod and my friends 4th generation unit, however, the newest iPods are incompatible. My home receiver also has an iPod dock which doesn’t work with the new unit. You also cannot add music for playback under Linux (at the moment. It’s being worked on.) Apple changed how they store music on the iPod, in what can only be described, as attempt to keep 3rd party applications form working. (Let’s face it, iTunes has become a horrible, bloated and slow application.)

If all this wasn’t bad enough, the thing keeps locking up. When I’m listening to MP3s or the radio, it just automatically resets and the music library is erased. I then have to refill the unit with the songs from my PC. And after a few more minutes of listening, it resets again erasing everything. I have sent it back twice and I still have the problem. (A friend of mine bought a new Nano and he is also having the reset problem.)

Apple, why would you make a product that is incompatible with the expansive collection of accessories that people have invested in? Is anybody there monitoring quality of your products anymore?

Don’t Just Listen to the Radio, Pause it and Tag it, Too
The new FM tuner lets you see the names of songs and artists. And two amazing features–iTunes Tagging and Live Pause–make listening to the radio nothing like listening to the radio.

FM Radio–it Gives You Yet Another Way to Rock
There’s always something great on the FM dial. And now the FM tuner lets you hear your favorite morning shows on your commute and discover new music while you work out. It even shows you what and who you’re listening to.1

With Live Pause, You’ll Never Miss a Beat
Say you need to take a quick break from listening to your favorite radio station. iPod nano lets you pause it with a click. Another click and you’re listening to your station again. You can even rewind as far back as 15 minutes, then fast-forward to catch up to the live broadcast.

iTunes Tagging–the New-Fashioned Way to Discover Music
It’s quite a dilemma: You’re listening to the radio and you hear a song you like, but when you go to iTunes, you can’t remember the name or even who sings it. Enter iTunes Tagging. Now, you can use the Click Wheel on iPod nano to tag the song. iTunes creates a list of all your tagged songs so you can easily preview or purchase them when you sync iPod nano to iTunes.

VoiceOver–the Talk of the Music World
VoiceOver tells you the title and artist of the songs you listen to. And does it so seamlessly, you’ll be surprised at how brilliant it is.

Let’s Talk VoiceOver
What if you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist? Just use the Click Wheel or the controls on the optional Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic and VoiceOver tells you the song name and who’s performing it without interrupting your music. So you’re never distracted from your ride or run by looking down at your screen.

The nano now includes an FM radio with iTunes Tagging and Live Pause functions.

Capture a thought, a reminder, a class lecture, or any audio recording you want with Voice Memos.

The new Pedometer counts every step you take. Or add Nike+ shoes and a Nike + iPod Sport Kit for the perfect workout partner.

How it Works
You’ll notice how smoothly and easily VoiceOver works. A lot of thought went into creating an iPod nano that not only talks, but says the right things. It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod nano. First, iTunes reads your song information, then uses the VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists, and playlists. Just sync your iPod nano to your computer and it really speaks to you.

It Speaks Multiple Languages
Your music library has songs from all over the world–a love song from France, a bolero from Spain, a pop tune from Japan. Luckily, VoiceOver speaks fluent song.

iTunes selects the language and best voice for your song titles and artist names. It looks at song data, like the title, artist, and album information, then applies intelligent algorithms to choose the right language. For example, iTunes recognizes the song “Ya Viene el Sol by Ozomatli as a Spanish song, so your iPod nano will automatically speak that song title and artist in Spanish. If you prefer to hear that information spoken in another language, you can change the designated VoiceOver language for that song in iTunes.

Hit the Ground Running–Or Walking
With the Nike + iPod Sport Kit (sold separately) and a built-in pedometer to help keep you motivated and track your fitness progress, iPod nano makes working out less routine.

Step it up with the New Pedometer
You take your iPod nano with you everywhere. Why not use it to stay fit? iPod nano now doubles as a Pedometer. It uses the built-in accelerometer to keep track of your steps and help you meet your fitness goals. You can create a daily step goal or set it to Always On so it counts all the steps you take, all the time. Which makes iPod nano the ideal exercise partner.

Rock and Run
Your shoes and your iPod nano team up to maximize your run. See the minutes tick by. Watch the miles unfold. Hear real-time voice feedback. All to your favorite music, including your chosen Power Song–that one song that always gets you through the home stretch.

Rock the Gym
Take Nike + iPod to the gym and minute by minute, mile by mile, you’re motivated by more than music. Connect your iPod nano to a Nike + iPod compatible cardio machine. Record your pace, time, and distance as you work out. With iPod nano, every trip to the gym becomes a new challenge.

Sync
When you’re finished, connect your iPod nano to your Mac or PC. iTunes automatically sends your workout data to nikeplus.com. Every workout and every run is there, ready for you to review. Get pumped for your next run with recommended challenges, custom training programs, and maps of new routes to try. Or share motivation with runners across the world.

Note to Self: Voice Memos Are Here
The built-in mic lets you capture a thought, a reminder, a class lecture, or any audio recording you want with Voice Memos.

iTunes: Your Greatest Hits
It’s even easier to organize, browse, grow, and share your digital music and video collection with the new iTunes. And now you can save items with a wish list and enjoy iTunes extras–bonus features on select albums and movies–like lyrics, photos, interviews, and behind-the-scenes media.

Customer Reviews:

Would wait for a refresh2
I bought the live viewfinder together with the GF1 14-45mm and pancake lens. I’m amazed by the camera and lenses however the LVF is disappointing to say the least.

Unfortunately the resolution is too low to make it usable and impossible to focus with. Only use would be to help you frame a shot in broad daylight but again not accurately. Definitely not worth such a high premium.

Finally, strangely enough, the aspect ratio of the LVF is different to that of the screen, so you get different black bars than you would get on the screen.

I find myself practically never attaching the viewfinder on the camera and would recommend anyone to stay away until a higher resolution version comes out or this falls under $100.

Very useful, but don’t expect miracles4
This viewfinder is not the same like an optical DSLR viewfinder, so do not be disappointed by what you see through it - you’ve been warned!
But it is an absolute must for a bright sunlight conditions and (you will be happy you have it just for that!) - for a low or ground level pictures (like flowers, little animals or anything else down below): this viewfinder can swivel 90 degrees up and let you take some pictures which could be physically impossible to take without it or with DSLR.
I am glad I bought it.

EVF makes viewing easier in bright sun, etc.5
The Panasonic GF1 is a great little camera, but when the sun shines, the LCD (like all LCDs) is difficult to see. The Electronic Viewfinder solves the problem. I read reports that it was not easy to see through, but I think it is just fine. I would suggest it as an accessory for anyone with a GF1.

A worthwhile alternative to APC to consider:5
I work as a network technician and have used APC equipment for many years. Their high-end units have always done well for us. For many years, I also used their Smart-UPS brand for my home network needs. As they’ve become old and had problems, it became more economical to replace them, instead of fixing them, especially, since for my desktops, the industry was moving to USB for signaling, and away from serial ports. My rack still has older 1400 VA SU units using SNMP management cards, but I needed a new desktop solution.

For the past three years, I stuck to APC’s consumer products and have been very disappointed. They have more problems than the older units I’ve grown to love, and because they change models so often, it’s harder to find a battery replacement. Plus, they just have a sort of cheapness about them.

With my latest computer purchase, a dual quad Mac Pro, my older 800VA APC just couldn’t handle it. So, I decided to try this Cyberpower 1500 and have been very pleased with it, using it for about 2 months so far. The signaling and reported time is more reliable than the APC I was using. Although it should be said, any consumer UPS will not guarantee exact runtimes, load measurements, etc. - For what you are paying for this amount of capacity, some sacrifice must be realized. If you do your calculations correctly, and use it as needed (surges, brown-outs and limited black-outs), these units will fulfill your needs. If you need super accurate measurements and reliable AC power generation, then you should consider a high end unit, such as what APC offers for data centers.

The load reading for this unit, when measured with a Kill-A-Watt is pretty accurate. I like the soft blue lighting with auto-off. I connect my two, 24″ LCDs to the APC 800VA unit, and the Cyberpower handles the Mac Pro with three, external FireWire drives with no problems. Testing it, by turning off the circuit breaker (shouldn’t pull the cord from the wall), reports about 20 minutes of runtime, which seems about right. I’ve left it on battery power for about 10 minutes, and the readings remained fairly constant. I live out in the country at the end of our power grid, so I get a lot of “dirty” power. Brown-outs are common, and my larger UPS units have the ability to generate statistical logs each day of the power fluctuation. I feel pretty safe with this unit, and wouldn’t hesitate to purchase another one.

Lastly, the software both Cyberpower and APC provides for the Mac OS, is really bad! I prefer to just use the Mac’s SysPrefs to configure the UPS settings and leave it at that. Both companies desperately need a re-write of their OS X software.

It Works Well.5
I’ve had this device for ~3 months and during that period the power has gone out twice for many hours and has “blinked” 5 or 6 times. Half the outlets in the back of the unit provide battery power and surge protection and the other half are just surge protection. I have my Dell XPS710 PC, 20″ LCD, and two external USB drives connected to the battery power and my router, modem, speakers and printer connected to the surge protected outlets. It kept my machine running for over 25 mins. when the power went out. My XPS710 is a big gaming rig, so that is just fine. All I need is enough time to finish whatever I’m doing and shut down properly. My PC ran without a hiccup. Same with the power “blinks.” They do not affect my PC at all. Plus, it keeps track of all the outages. For a lesser PC, this unit would probably sustain power for much longer. I highly recommend it for protecting any important equipment.

Also, the software will automatically shut down your PC at a pre-set time (i.e., 5 mins of battery power left) in case you lose power when you are not home. Don’t forget to download the latest version of the PowerPanel software at the CyberPower website.

Misleading advertising / can’t completely silence it2
I want to start by saying that I love the little LCD display with the ability to see how many watts I’m using and the remaining battery time (both without needing to install any software).

However,

1) Both the box and their website say typical runtime up to 170 minutes. I don’t want to call it False Advertising, but it’s certainly misleading. I’ve now plugged in two of these units and, after fully charged, the highest remaining battery time is 100 minutes. That’s with nothing plugged in so it could never be greater than 100 minutes.

In my case, I have a Dell Dimension 8250 and an LG 24″ LCD (turned down to 4% brightness which significantly reduces power consumption). My system uses 144 watts and I get 39 minutes of backup time. That’s better than I got with my previous, similarly priced APC model. However, 144 watts is like two light bulbs and it’s sad that the modern state of personal UPSes can only power two light bulbs for 39 minutes, and I paid $170 for this.

2) There’s no way to completely silence the alarms. First, if the unit’s battery is completely drained, you have to remember to manually silence the alarms again when you turn it back on (unless you install their software). Second, even after you do this, the alarms will still sound during the last fifteen to twenty minutes of battery life. As far as I can tell there’s NO WAY to prevent this, not on the UPS and not with the software. You can silence the initial alarms, but not the final ones.

My request to all UPS manufacturers: consider the people who buy UPSes that cost less than $200 — mainly home users and possibly small businesses. These UPSes are not located in a corporate data center, these are in homes where people sleep. The last thing I care about in the middle of the night is if the power goes out. I certainly don’t want my UPS to wake up the whole family.

Please give us an easy way to permanently silence all alarms, without needing to install any software, and that continue to remain always silent, no matter what. Even a DIP switch would be great.

3) I wouldn’t count on using the telephone/coax surge-suppressing jacks on this unit. Maybe they’ll work for you, maybe not. I couldn’t use the telephone jack because it created a lot of noise on the phone line (FWIW I don’t have DSL either).

I also couldn’t use the coax jack. Actually I was using it for several days in the beginning, but then a couple of techs from Comcast Cable showed up at my door and said they’d traced signal noise in my neighborhood to my house. They insisted that I remove the coax from this UPS. (FWIW they said this wouldn’t matter because Comcast supposedly has surge protection outside of people’s houses.)

Despite my mixed feelings about this UPS, I would probably recommend and purchase this model again in the future because I haven’t been able to find anything better in the market in this price range. It’s the lesser of the evils. I’ve had too many problems with APC models, so I hope to avoid APC while their quality remains inferior.

Good Purchase5
I was hesitant to purchase this item based on the limited information on Amazon, and it appears by the percentages of “people who buy this item” many others felt the same way. I couldnt be happier with the purchase, and the price I paid for it. The lamp is a Philips product which I believe is the manufacturer of the OEM part. The bulb comes in the housing which was a concern of mine as I did not want to handle the bulb. It is shipped in a box with good protection of the bulb to prevent anything touching it. Detailed instructions accompany the product, and it couldnt have been easier to replace. Full disclosure I am still on the first day of use but I will update if it presents me any trouble, it appears that it is a great purchase compared to the more expensive alternative.

Great product, very reliable company!5
Installation was a breeze because this product included the new housing as well as the lamp. You can buy the lamp by itself at various sites, but these types of lamps are very sensitive to oils, etc. from your hands. I recommend buying the entire lamp and housing, and this company is great! They answered all of my questions beforehand, told me when they would ship it, and then delivered on their promise. I highly recommend using these guys. They even include a postage-paid form for sending the old lamp and housing back to them for disposal/recycle/whatever. You aren’t supposed to simply toss them in the trash due to the material inside the lamp. Good luck and don’t be shy about purchasing from this vendor.

New Lamp5
The lamp and housing arrived on time. My old lamp blew out and I called on my extended service contract and was told this was a user replced item. They would send me a replacement in 10-14 days. Amazon was able to get it to me in 3 days, so I ordered it replaced it with ease and now have the slow delivery one for a spare. In installing the bulb I noticed there was a setting for bulb saver which my TV was not set on, but now is. The bulb worked fine and installing was easier than if I just purched the bulb alone.

Best Laptop To Date5
Out of the box this unit worked flawlessly. This is the most attractive notebook I’ve ever owned. Someone across the room heard a music video I was watching and said “that computer has great sound.” It is great to have my numeric keypad back for crunching numbers.

Mobile broadband and 16GB flash drive USBs worked as expected. So did WiFi and a hardwired network. The 17.3″ video is just awesome. This is my second, larger, notebook and I’ll never go smaller again.

Very satisfied, great price and fast, free shipping from Amazon.

Truly a Best Buy5
But not from Best Buy. My other laptop suffered some kind of disease and we’re away from home, so I opted for a “cheap” replacement. 4 gigs of Ram (!!) and room for 4 more and a 320 gig hard drive are among the things that make this an outstanding buy. It’s BIG - and that’s either it’s strength, if you want a big screen and full size keyboard AND keypad; or it’s weakness if you like small……..

I’m a great fan of Amazon, but before you buy this gem, you might want to run over to your nearest Office Depot - it’s currently on sale for about a hundred bucks less……..

Great laptop for an awesome price4
This laptop has impressed me so far. Not only is it inexpensive, but it seems solidly built. It is very quiet. The screen is huge and looks great. It is powerfully enough for all of my home PC needs. The only 2 negatives are the weak sound quality (not unexpected in a laptop) and the touchpad buttons, which make a noticeable clicking noise when you press them. If you can live with those minor annoyances, I recommend considering this laptop for your home PC.

Customer Reviews:

Solid NC Headphones, probably the best choice under $3005
First a few words about a noise canceling headphones in general. I’m a frequent traveler, flying about 50% of time internationally. I’m not a musician by any means, but I understand that having a pair of good “cans” sometimes is the difference between arriving to your destination wasted or completely relaxed. You owe it to yourself to have a pair of good quality noise cancellers if you travel internationally or coast-to-coast at least 3 times a year. I’ve owned my share of noise canceling headphones, starting from Sony “in-the-ear” MDR-NC11A, then graduating to Sennheiser “on-the-ear” RPXC 250. Finally, I borrowed Bose “over-the-ear” QuietComfort 3 to my conference flight to California and back to Ohio. If you are deciding which general design of headphones to choose - let me tell you up-front that “over-the-ear” design gives you the best comfort you can have on the long flight - hands down.

Now in the detail about this particular set. After experiencing the “over-the-ear” design of Bose, I decided to get a pair. But being burned by my previous experiences, I decided to do some careful comparison shopping. After a few weeks of research, I went to the actual store to compare 3 models that I’ve selected: Bose QuietComfort 3 ($299), Sennheiser PXC 350 and ($359) and Sony MDR NC50 ($199). The MDR NC60 Model was not even on my list then, and Sennheiser PXC 450 ($449) being as good as they are (canceling 90% of the noise) was simply too pricy for me.

I’ve tested Bose QuietComfort 3 first. Being so highly advertised, I was expecting it to be the top performer, but was extremely underwhelmed. It performed much better then any of my previous headphones, but it was no match for Sennheiser and it was even worse then Sony, that, may I remind you comes up to be $100 cheaper. On the top of it, I could not find the actual acoustic characteristics for the Bose pair anywhere in the manual. (Since then, I’ve done search on the WEB and I still cannot find them… amazing!). Then I moved on to the Sennheiser PXC 350, and was not disappointed. I almost left the store with that pair in the shopping bag. Cancelling up to 85% of noise, it was an excellent pair. When you turn the NC on - it fills like you suddenly went deaf. The BASS is very punchy and powerful even when the noise cancellation is off. Third on my list were Sony MDR NC50 and they were surprisingly good as well. Not so good with the BASS when NC is off as Sennheiser, and they felt a bit awkward on my head, but the sound quality was better then those of Bose. I was almost ready to leave, when a store clerk showed me a pair of NC60’s and that’s when I was sold - right then and there.

They are as good as they come, canceling up to 85% of noise, with excellent sound quality, and with a good BASS output when NC is off. I’d say that if Sennheiser PXC 350 is better - I could not determine it. After researching this model on the WEB for another week, I’ve purchased it from Amazon for $149.00. I’ve already had my first flight experience with it and let me tell you - I’m not disappointed. Here is the list of Pros and Cons from where I’m sitting…

PROS:
- This is the most comfortable pair of cans I’ve ever tried. The overall fit is very comfortable - I was able to fall asleep on a 3 hour flight. There is absolutely no “suction” effect as I’ve experienced with another phones I’ve tried.
- Both, the cups and the bridge are wrapped up in very fine leather. I read some reviews that some people do not like leather on the headphones as it may cause sweating - I personally never experience that, not with this pair nor with any other headphones I’ve owned. So, even though I cannot say anything negative about that aspect, I might not be the best judge in this case - some people can be more sensitive then others. As far as leather quality and feel - they are as good as they come.
- The unique feature of this model is a “monitor” button that allows you to hear surrounding sounds without turning off the NC or taking the cans off. The only comfort comment I have about this model is that this button is hard to find for someone who’s just beginning to adjust to this set. As I’m getting used to this pair, though, I’m getting much better at it - minor problem with a design in my mind.
- This pair runs on a regular AAA battery, illuminating the need to carry a battery charger and having to worry about how to charge it in Europe. This is a big plus in my books. 1 AAA battery gives you 30 continuous hours of NC; if you think that it is not enough - just take a couple of spare AAAs with you - it is still better then a charger, and sure will be enough for a trip to any destination.
- Overall build is very sturdy, yet easy to adjust to whatever position is desirable. Folds neatly into a carrying case, and as far as “over-the-ear” designed go - do not take much space when folded. Again, if the portability is your main concern - you might want to check out “on-the-ear” designs.
- Sound quality (again) is one of the best ones I’ve tried when it comes to NC headphones for travelers. BASS output is very good with NC on and just slightly worse with it being off (expect it on all NC headphones). I’m listening to all kinds of music and these NC’s perform very good for everything from Cleveland Orchestra to Jimi Hendrix. That being said, if you do not plan to use the NC feature of the headphones and just need something to listen to your stereo at home - you’ll definitely be able to find a better set for less money. Better yet - take this simple test: if speakers for your home theatre system are made by Boss, Sony, or Panasonic - this pair is going to be good for use at home, at work, or on the plane. If, on the other hand, you have Boston Acoustics hooked up to your stereo - you might want to keep MDRNC60 for travel purpose, and for home use pick up a higher end model without NC feature.
- Noise Cancellation feature works great - definitely better then on Bose QC3 (and I’m not kidding). In my opinion it is the best NC you can get for under $300 - as simple as that.

CONS:
- There is only one negative comment that I have about this product. Carrying case that this model comes with is a softer kind which is a big minus in my mind. I like the hard case that comes with Bose QC3: having a harder case allows you to clip it to your laptop bag, for instance, and not to worry about smashing your headphones to pieces as you walk down the isle on the plane. This case I would not recommend to keep clipped to the outside of your luggage, as you can end up damaging your headphones. Also, as a future suggestion to a lonely Sony engineer who might read this review in his spare time - it would be nice if the inside compartment in the carrying case had enough room to accommodate iPod Video (just a suggestion)

NOTES:
- The airplane adapter is “foldable” - that is when you can fold one of two mini jacks “in”. Is it really necessary to preserve 2 millimeters of space when you already have a carrying case? Fixed one would be just fine; instead another possible breakage point is being introduced. I’m not sure how this adopter will be functioning in 3 years if it is constantly “folded - unfolded”, and I’m not going to test it, though, I’ll just keep it “unfolded” all of the time.
- The cable that comes with these headphones connects the actual cup with the stereo mini jack. There is a plus and a minus in this feature for me. I understand the desire to make a cord interchangeable, and I guess some people might want to disconnect the cable so that they can sleep on the plane, but it might backfire if the connection becomes loose over a period of time. I read a lot of reviews and did not see people complain about it, but who knows if this becomes a weak point for me - will I write a review after 3 years of use, or just go and buy another pair?

As good as Bose at less than half the price5
I’ve used Bose’s over the ear noise canceling headphones for a couple of years while traveling across country. On an overnight flight from LA with my wife along, I loaned them to her to watch the movie and never got them back. To make a long story short, I cast about and came across a review (here) that favorably compared this Sony model to Bose’s, so I ordered a pair to have for those occasions my wife is along on trips. Guess what, I’m now using the Sony headphones and the Bose’s are the ones sitting at home waiting for those occasions when she’s along for the trip.

For those new to noise reduction headphones, don’t expect miracles. They reduce noise, not eliminate it. Moreover, they react best to sound waves that are long; i.e., low tones. This means they take out a substantial portion of the noise on an airplane, which is a consistent roar, but will not remove intermittent sounds. It’s still startles me to be able to hear the conversation going on in the seat behind me since the parties are talking loudly to overcome the airplane noise. You can still communicate with the stewardess or your seat partner, although somewhat muffled since your ears are encased. There is a mic switch you can press to activate the earphone mic if you actually want to make conversation. That may be the source of some of the problems encountered by negative reviewers. Myself, I’ve found these phones to be superb, especially in contrasting them to the Bose model, which is generally acknowledged to be the top of the heap. I doubt any headphones of this sort would pass audiophile muster, but that’s not what they’re designed for. What they do is make very long flights bearable, providing much less intrusive sound levels, and permitting actually hearing the plane’s sound system effectively. The other crucial factor is comfort and these easily match the Bose’s in that regard (try my 9 hour flight to Honolulu during which they were hardly ever off of my head).

The package includes things like an airplane jack and a protective carrying case. The case may not be quite as crush resistant as Bose’s but it’s plenty tough. I strap it across my lap top handle and it has yet to show any wear and tear, even with all the shoving under airline seats or in overhead compartments.

Equal to Bose5
I got the new Sony NC60 base on reviews from the 2007 Las Vegas Electronics show. Took them on a recent flight to Japan so I could compare then directly with the American Airlines supplied Bose QC3 headsets.
Comparisons:
Noise Cancelling: No perceptable difference between Bose and Sony
Noise Isolation: Sony the clear winner over the “On ear” Bose QC3
Sound Quality: No clear winner here, the Bose might have a slight edge at lower listening levels. When you crack it up the Sony sounds better to me. The only issue I had with the Sony is the bass response was a little buzzy if I used the bass boost EQ feature of my IPod.
Comfort: The Sony by a wide margin. For my 7 1/2 size head, the Bose QC3 padding was almost painful. The Sony I could sleep with.
Other Features: The QC3 is smaller and lighter if that is important. The cable unplugs from the Sony (which is nice when you try to sleep on the plane). Some people complain about the on/off switch on the Sony, it didn’t bother me since I only turn them off when I put them away. I found the battery life for the Sony is about 20 hours (pack an extra AAA).

What can I say, … it’s toner5
Does what its meant to do. I don’t keep count but it’s easy to install and is, IMO, the lower end of average as far as cost of cartridge goes…

Original Samsung Item5
I ordered this item from Amazon and received what I expected, a new original manfacturer’s laser toner cartridge. Delivery was on time.

Completely Satisfied5
Kind of hard to mess this one up, but there is still probably several ways. This product was brand new in the box, shipped out quickly from ANT Online. I’m counting the sheets to see how many I get out of it.

Customer Reviews:

Good value for the money5
Amazon offers this unit for less than some big-box stores. Another good reason to buy from Amazon.

Always remember that outfits like iomega, LaCie, Fantom and others are packagers, not hard drive manufacturers. There are only a few hard drive manufacturers and all of them turn out good products. This does not mean that hard drives don’t fail - they do and anyone who keeps only one copy of critical data is a fool.

The units I purchased both had current models of Seagate Barracuda drives installed: excellent devices. Right now, the drives themselves from some sources cost only a few dollars less than the iomega unit, so you are getting the external housing for just a few dollars.

The housing has a power switch, very nice at a time when other manufacturers are eliminating such “frills” and a white activity light on the side, which strikes me as a strange place for it. Since the housing has no fan, there is no fan noise. The noise from the drive itself should be imperceptible. (If it isn’t, return the unit immediately.)The housing remains cool to the touch in use.

The unit size is nice and a plastic base is included for those who prefer a vertical mounting.

A power supply and USB cable round out the package.

One of the very nice aspects of this unit is that there is no software installed on the drive - nor is any included in the box. Yea! The drive comes NTFS formatted and, for use with an Apple Macintosh, must be reformatted.

Overall, a very nice value.

Jerry

Cheap, small, huge storage!5
I stopped using Iomega products several years ago (remember the infamous “click of death” infesting Iomega Zip drives?) But after reading the Amazon reviews, I decided to get the Iomega 1TB drive.

It is about half the size of my old 350 GB Maxtor hard drives, costs half as much, and has three times the storage capacity! I plugged it in and Windows XP had it up and running in seconds, no fuss.

As a test, I transferred two gigs of photos (I’m a photojournalist) and it backed up two gigs in two minutes. It is almost perfectly silent.

I didn’t bother downloading the free Retrospect Backup software; I always back up manually as part of my business routine.

If I ever have a problem with this drive, I’ll update this review. Otherwise, I rate it as a perfect high-capacity drive, period.

Like it5
I’ve got 21 iomega drives - I’ve been using them for years and I’ve never had a problem - though a contract employee of mine said one of his died. (He actually just shipped it to me and yep - it’s dead.) I just bought my first 1TB drive and I’m psyched. I’m using it to back up my old, lower-capacity drives. It seems as solid as the others. I’m going to fit all the video and projects on my first six drives onto one drive now! It’s smaller than any of the others, too - as far as external physical dimensions. They got the dimensions wrong on this site - it’s 8 x 4.5 x 1.25. It’s awesome. I’m a pro video producer and now thanks to these drives (and a smokin’ laptop) I’ll be super-portable. I think I’ll wind up with everything on 4 or 5 of these now. Killer product. I love these things.

***

NOTE - I now own 5 of the new prestige drives, and one of them has stopped working. Luckily I back everything up. I’m still buying the drives, and I’m hopeful that Iomega will replace it, but you should know I lost one of these newer ones.

***

NOTE - No, I didn’t lose it after all. It was acting wonky for a while, but that was at least six or seven months ago, and I haven’t had any trouble since. (It wasn’t linking up to the computer, but that stopped after about a week.) It’s been working fine since then.

Customer Reviews:

Logitech Does It Again!5
I’ve used Logitech mice before and this one tops all of the ones made by Logitech. I’ve read many reviews before purchasing this and read some of the drawbacks to this mouse and some advantages to this mouse. Logitech outperformed itself once again, with amazing features, support, and performance.

Disadvantages:
1. The styling of the mouse could have been better designed. It takes a little getting used to using the trackball with fingers other than your thumb.
2. Logitech erred in the device drivers. I repeat, please do not install the drivers shipped with the package. Go to Logitech.com/support and download the 9.75.0 verson and install it, not the 9.60.0 version as it will damage your compatibility with other mice already installed.
3. The price of this mouse will set you back and have you looking elsewhere. But, the advantages of this mouse far outweigh the little-bit-above-customer-expectation price …
4. This mouse requires a learning curve, as its design and the use of a trackball may not be familiarized with everyone’s use. For those of you who have never used a trackball or is used to using a trackball with your thumb, this mouse does take a day or two to get totally used to.
5. Use the initial orientation/setup process seriously. Because of the nature of the styling of this mouse, the way you position the mouse on your desk while orienting/setting up the mouse will have an impact on usage.

Advantages:
1. RF frequency is used to the best capabilities in this mouse. I’ve used mice from other manufacturers and this one tops all of them. Using digital radio technology, this mouse allows you to place the RF receiver pretty much anywhere you’d like up to 20 feet away from the computer.
2. The many buttons on the mouse help you to minimize use of keyboard. It has Back/Forward, scroll, Drag Lock, Fast Scroll, and conventional buttons.
3. The compact receiver helps to minize clutter on your desktop and helps when you want to carry it and the mouse around (if you’re blessed like me to have a laptop).
4. Customer support is one of the best in the industry, with lifetime phone support and a 5-year warranty.
5. Installation was a breeze. a) Download Logitech Drivers version 9.75.0 or above b) Install drivers c) Connect hardware d) Press Connect button on the hardware for 20seconds - 1minute e) You’re Done! Enjoy!
6. This mouse comes shipped with a serial port adapter, giving you total flexibility to connect via USB or serial - I strongly recommend using the USB ports due to the advanced nature of the hardware and the reliability of USB ports.
7. The name of Logitech speaks for itself.

All in all, I recommend this product wholeheartedly to you.
If you do purchase one, buy from Amazon.com as they did an excellent job of fulfilling my order the same day.

Smooth motion, wireless, but button placement not as ergonomic as alternatives3
Let me give you some background before you read my review.
I’m in my 30’s. I use computer 8+ hours a day and start developing RSI symptoms.

I have tried / owned the following trackballs

Logitech TrackMan Marble FX Trackball
Logitech Optical Marble Mouse
Logitech Trackman Wheel Optical
Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman
Original 3 buttons Kensington Expert Mouse
Kensington Expert Mouse Pro

The Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman does not score well in my needs - eliminating / reducing my RSI related pains.

Pros: wireless, good build quality, good battery life, lots of programmable buttons, smooth scrolling trackball.

Cons: Cannot be used left handed, buttons are not located in convenient position (cruise buttons, scroll wheel are too small, awkward position of the forward/back buttons).

By far the biggest complaint is the most used left button.
This key is clicked N times a day so it should be easy to locate and click.

Instead, this button is concededly smaller than the one in Optical Marble Mouse and Trackman Wheel Optical.

Also, this button is positioned 45 degree on the left side of the mouse, and it requires some extra effort to click it, since you have to hold the trackman in position using your ring and little finger to counter the force you acted on using your thumb.

Consider this experiment, using only your thumb(without holding the trackman in position) and try to left click on it. You’ll be tempted to secure the trackman using your other fingers. If you have to repeatedly do this, your muscle will be sore.

This is not the case for the kensington expert mouse or the Logitech Optical Marble Mouse, where the button is faced up and you can click directly on it without securing the device in position.

If you are young and not suffered from RSI, this might not be an issue for you. But for the others that who are seeking an ergonomic pointing device, this one is a no go.

Very comfortable after a few days4
This device is very comfortable to use after a few days adapting. Movement is very precise, BUT probably not suitable for 3D gaming. (except sniping :^) Adjustment is possible, but result is either too sensitive for useful gaming, or far too much movement needed. (IE, roll ball 3 times to turn 90 degrees) Luckily for gamers, under Windows it is very happy being plugged in USB at the same time as a PS2 or USB mouse, both work simultaneously.

Vertical/horizontal orientation is VERY far off out-of-box, (about 30 degrees, but feels like more at first) but can be adjusted under WINDOWS ONLY. (If you are a Linux user, you should probably pass, Linux mouse drivers don’t currently offer orientation adjustments or extra [>3] button assignments) [Maybe some consumer pressure can convince Logitech to spare a few programmer-hours to add this support to the Open-Source driver? :^) Worth a few emails a week…]

Take placement warnings seriously:
The receiver is VERY sensitive to nearby metal. As an example, I placed the receiver on top of my steel computer housing, only 8 inches from the trackball, (right underneath it!!) and it was unreliable. I placed the receiver on my wooden desk, but on top of a few CDs, and it was unreliable at 12 inches. I turned the receiver UPSIDE-DOWN in either of those locations and I get 3-4 foot range! Obviously the antenna is located in the bottom of the receiver, which is IMHO a design flaw, but easy to overcome. When placed on wooden desk with no metal within 4 inches, I get up to 8 foot range before movement starts to stutter from transmission errors. Quite acceptable. Ability to mount on a vertical desk side would have been a very handy addition, however.

The rollers inside are VERY susceptible to dirt accumulation, and I find myself cleaning them AT LEAST once a day, but this is a very simple process. (push the ball up from the bottom, rub the three micro-ball-bearings with a fingertip, blow loosened crud out, drop the ball back in - about 7 seconds total)

All in all, apart from desktop wobble and a sticking button (…) and limited Linux configurability, I’m quite pleased with this trackball.

I would recommend it to anyone with limited desk space for a mouse, wanting/needing precise cursor control, and/or just wanting to try a trackball. There IS a ‘learning curve’ since you use fingertips to control motion, thumb for ‘left-mouse’ and two other buttons, but RMB is located to the right of the ball (not clear in pictures) and you can remap functions of all eight (that’s right, 8) buttons in whatever way suits you.
