I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed re-watching it with the commentary by Professor Brian Cox, the scientific consultant for the movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sunshine! Click Here

Those reviewers who are stating that the science is bad (or even “ridiculous”) may not have listened to this commentary. There are some errors, which Cox points out, but the overall notion is not impossible, or even so farfetched as to be ‘virtually impossible’.

Professor Cox is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Particle Physics at the University of Manchester who also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva. In his commentary he mentions discussing with other scientists at CERN about the Q-ball hypotheses and relevance to sun-dying and restarting in the movie. (Incidentally, he seems to occupy the existence these super-symetrical (or super-stable) objects will be proven (by CERN) within the next 10 years or so.) His problems with science in the movie tend to be some of the smaller issues (for example - the craft orbiting Mercury a few times, rather than honest a ’sling-shot’ exhaust) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sunshine! Click Here

His statement on what the penultimate scene means to him (even if it only occurs in a ‘billionth of a second’, or in ‘the mind’) is fabulous, and really impressed upon me the beauty, wonder, and dread many scientists maintain for the universe. I assume some reviewers only saw this scene in a literal earth-based perception of time and were put-off by it. Again, it’s not necessarily meant to be seen that contrivance. (And as mentioned earlier, Professor Cox’s comment on its magnificence is sharp.)

Another criticism reviewers have mentioned was why so many unstable people were picked for these missions. Again, I reflect these reviewers may have missed something covered briefly in the film itself, and then more in depth in the commentaries. The people picked were stable and generally the very best in their field. Something with gravity, radiation, or another undefined characteristic of the sun caused mental problems . . . this was the reason the second mission included a psychologist, and the reason he was experimenting with the impact of sunlight exposure. I also judge the writer was using individuals to highlight various aspects of human nature, but that might impartial be me.

All that being said, this is not a Star Wars type of film. If that is what you are looking for, you may well be disappointed. On the other hand, it is a bit less obscure in meaning and site than films like Solaris, and maybe even a bit easier to pick on the first viewing than 2001, and, for me at least, imparted considerable of the wonder and panic that those films did.

To anyone choosing to ogle this film on DVD, I’d recommend watching it, and then watching it again (or at the very least, the last five minutes of it) with Cox’s commentary. In my view his comments invent a really delectable film even better.

Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

Ground breaking director Danny Boyle has done it again with sci-fi action-adventure film “Sunshine.” It is something you have never seen before. The film takes situation in 2057. The sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. The Earth’s last hope lies in the hands of the crew on Icarus II. Attempting to sail to the sun and originate a massive nuclear weapon into it to ignite the fading star. Out of the radio contact with Earth, the mission begins to unravel and they acquire themselves fighting for their lives and the future of us all.

Fans of other Danny Boyle’s films will not be disappointed. His astounding films include; 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Transpotting, The Beach and Shallow Grave. The films delivers in every aspect. Unfortunately, the advertising campaign wasn’t very strong for this round of Danny Boyle’s film. And “Sunshine” only played in about 4000 screens. I luckily, found this on playing in a theatre arrive me when it was released in July 2007 and fell in savor with it.

Overall “Sunshine” was a tall, colossal, sci-fi film that would be shown to anyone who enjoys a wonderful movie. I wish the advertising campaign would have been better because this is one film that should not be missed.

Film itself: *****

“Sunshine” uses a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 which is a broad choice for the Fox Classic. This film has colossal visuals, mainly scenes in outer station. Without giving too remarkable away, the last 20 minutes of the film are amazingly done and the visuals should be nominated for an Academy Award. The transfer to Blu-ray is very well done. When I saw it in the theatre, I was shy about some of the segments of the film because they are darker and could cause the shroud to be grainy. But Fox pulled through and did a spacious job in transferring all the stout visuals that I saw in July onto my HD TV at home.

Video: *****

“Sunshine” uses English DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit) audio format. It is an agreeable choice and again, Fox pulled through. The audio on this film alone is Oscar profitable. The films soundtrack, soon to be released, is done by John Murphy in an astonishing design. Each scene in this film is memorable with the support to John Murphy’s soundtrack (OST) . The Blu-ray transfer is tall. The disc also features French Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound which are a shrimp disappointing but didn’t affect the overall outcome of the disc. I would have liked to scrutinize the same DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 in the French and Spanish languages. But overall, the audio delivers past my expectations and I level-headed belief on purchasing the “Sunshine” OST when it is released.

Audio: *****

“Sunshine” features a recent Profile, called Profile 1.1 which is newly released in 2008. The Profile 1.1 allows you to thought the film in PiP. The smaller hide being the director commentaries and the main conceal being the dependable movie. The PiP option allows you to switch support and forth between the screens without pausing the movie. Fortunately, Sony updated their PlayStation 3 to enable this option a few weeks ago. It works beyond imaginable and I really believe that this will leave HD-DVD in the dust.

The Blu-ray disc also features an Audio commentary with the Director Danny Boyle which is above par. 21 Video Diaries, all with the Director Introduction. 12 Deleted Scenes and an alternate ending. Two short films: “Dad’s Tiring,,” and “Mole Hills” which are mediocre. And the theatrical trailer.

The High Definition Peculiar remark on this disc are probably the best I have seen on a Blu-ray disc yet. The “Enhanced Viewing Mode” which in the picture-in-picture video commentary are well worth the Blu-ray disc engage alone (Profile 1.1) . It also features a “Surround Sound Mixer” which you can lift audio from the movie and listen to it by itself, or acquire your celebrated parts and establish them together. A subtitle trivia track, which is loaded will tons and tons of information about the movie, production, and actors. And a search convey index. These are probably the best HD and extra conent features that I have seen on a Blu-ray disc and are well worth the trace.

Extras: *****

“Sunshine” is my celebrated movie of 2007 and could possibly be the best Blu-ray Disc of 2007/2008. I can’t hold all the High Definition snarl on this disc and it is well worth the note. Profile 1.1, also known as “Enhanced Viewing Mode” is a astronomical addition to Blu-ray disc and I possess this is what will bring Blu-ray out in the kill (also the fact that blu-ray has Disney) . I would highly recommend this Blu-ray disc to ANYONE who ones a Blu-ray disc player. A must seize. If I could rate this any higher I would.

Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

Overall: *****

First, let me say, they had me at 24.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 24: Season One! Click Here

This is one of the best shows I have had the pleasure of viewing. I was fortunate enough to ogle this series live from the very beginning, and it grips me soo.

If you want a point to that can cause a heart attack, this is that indicate. It has me on the edge of my seat, and in all reality, has my heart racing! (no other indicate except prison smash and dexter has ever done this to me) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream 24: Season One! Click Here

You cant discontinuance watching the indicate, but most people looking at this review could care less what I reflect about the exhibit, and want to know what I deem about the special edition, so lets glean started!

The alternate ending. is it unique? yes, is it expedient? not even, quite possibly the worst thing I have ever watched (no, it is not badly acted, nor shot, in fact, it is technically sound, but the ending is not an ending, I do not wish to spoil anything, but to say it stunk would be a spacious understatement!)

Basically the whole site is the same as the current I’m positive you have on your shelf. Disc 7 is recent, and has your extended scenes, and 2 extra documentary’s.

The extra documentary’s are nice, and worth watching, but not necessarily worth buying over your other version.

The case is comely, it has a clock on it that says 24, you can press a button and it resets to 0 and counts up, which is frigid.

The housing of the dvds looks nice, with a unique art accomplish. The art is handsome worthy the same (on the dvds) .

Last, but not least, the discs are housed in a cardboard container, 2 of my discs expose scratches, and 1 was out of the sleeve entirely.

I have bought other dvds in the past using cardboard containers, and the result is the same. Not sterling for housing dvds.

Your best bet is to hold the dvds, earn the scratched ones resurfaced, and store in other cases, or inside of a cd case.

Again, the indicate is the same, and one of the best things you can concept. if you do not have 24 season 1, this one is a no brainier.

If you have all seasons and have watched them many times (as I have) this serene gives you nothing.

The display is a 5 out of 5. This release is a 4.5 out of 5 (half a star gone due to infamous packing)

For people who absorb the previous version, give this a pass, and lift up the eventual blu-ray.

maybe a diminutive spoiler? but I deem not, read next paragraph at your enjoy risk.

The alternate ending (the main reason I bought it) sucks, it unbiased ends, nothing happens! if you have seen season 1, you know what happens in the destroy, here, nothing happens. and by nothing I mean nothing at all.

Do not catch this edition; your discs will probably be damaged. The packaging is cheap and irascible. The discs pace out of the rough “cardboard” holders and fade about the inside of the container, scratching them. I bought this region notice original, in the fresh packaging/wrapper and three of the discs had slipped out of their slots during transit. The edges of the discs were scuffed up, as there is an uneven “raised” cardboard surface good underneath where the disc is housed. The disc will rub up and down over that surface, damaging it. There is nothing (like a hub) to retain the disc in place; they hotfoot out of their slots and roll all over the site.

THE BAND WAGON is (along with SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN) my current musical of all time. Coming in a discontinuance second is EASTER PARADE. Warner Bros. has applied their incredible Ultra-Resolution technology to these two films, to bring out their TECHNICOLOR brilliance.

If you saw what WB did with GWTW, MEET ME IN ST LOUIS or SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, you know we’re in for a treat!

But it doesn’t finish there…

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Classic Musicals Collection - Broadway to Hollywood! Click Here

THE BAND WAGON has a commentary by the director’s daughter…this girl named Liza, and a novel documentary about the making of the film, and a documentary about her wonderful father, and a Vitaphone short with Jack Buchanan, AND the deleted song TWO-FACED WOMAN. Add to this a current 5.1 stereo soundtrack, and you’re in BAND WAGON heaven!

Then we obtain to EASTER PARADE, the quintessential Hollywood well-liked with Judy Garland at her best teaming up with the improbable Astaire. The extras here include Fred’s daughter on commentary along with the foremost Garland author John Fricke, a gallery of Astaire trailers, a docu on the making of EASTER PARADE and best of all, the extraordinary PBS Biographical anecdote that was created by American Masters last year, JUDY GARLAND: BY MYSELF (it won a boatload of Emmy Awards) .

OK. So if that was all WB was giving us in this box, I’d be going nuts, but they don’t conclude there.

We also regain a trace spankin’ recent 16×9 transfer of BELLS ARE RINGING with Judy Holliday re-creating her stage triumph, along with Dean Martin, a 5.1 soundtrack, outtakes, a unique docu, and more…

..and then Francis Ford Coppola personally guides us through one of his earliest works, as Astaire stars with Pet Clark in FINIAN’S RAINBOW, for the first time on DVD, with a 16×9 transfer, and 5.1 audio and director commentary, and premiere footage…

Last but not least is the return of BRIGADOON, which on DVD before looked like $%^&*(*&!!!!

Not anymore! A 16×9 remastering with 5.1 sound, and a slew of outtakes gives us a definitive presentation of Gene Kelly & Cyd Charisse creating Minnelli magic to the Lerner and Loewe find.

All this, in one box, with our kind Amazon friends selling it at an unbelievably bargain brand, is really beyond view.

WB continues to boggle the DVD-lover’s mind! WOW!

Warner has been doing a lovely job of using the latest recount resolution process to restore and/or polish up their best movies; and again they do not disappoint! Warner Home Video truly hits a home accelerate and does the improbable with this boxed space of five of the greatest musicals of all time! The plot is well presented with ample digital transfer, extraordinary sound and a bevy of sublime extras.

The Band Wagon (which itself is a two DVD special edition) stars Fred Astaire as an older entertainer trying to be successful again in demonstrate business. Things do not go well: he doesn’t like the director; there aren’t esteem dance scenes that he prefers to beget and he has to dance with a ballerina! The display is unpopular and Fred’s character Tony Hunter saves the day using his splendid technique and know-how. The extras are amazing! Liza Minnelli (whose Dad, Vincente Minnelli, did an profitable job as director of the relate) and Michael Feinstein provide an fascinating commentary. There are also two documentaries: “Gain Aboard! The Band Wagon” about the making of the movie and an older note entitled “The Men Who Made the Movies: Vincente Minnelli.” You won’t regret these-they are beneficial and very informative! SMILE There’s also the outtake musical number of Two Faced Women. Very obedient! For Astaire fans there’s an Astaire trailer collection and even a musical short of Jack Buchanan with the Glee Quartet. I was particularly tickled with the glorious commentary Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein give here.

The other two disc special edition is of the MGM classic Easter Parade. Wow! This has always been one of my very accepted musicals. The acting and the chemistry between Astaire playing the professional dancer and Judy Garland playing Hannah Brown his at first unlikely dance partner-and eventually romantic partner-is nothing short of splendid and inspiring! Ann Miller turns in a astronomical performance as the dancer who leaves Fred’s character to try to pick up even further ahead in her career. The digital quality of the video and the sound are both helpful. There’s a documentary of the making of this movie and a particular current of mine is the American Masters documentary profile: “Judy Garland: By Myself” establish out only with the critical peril of my friend John Fricke. (The American Masters documentary won more than unprejudiced one Emmy, making this a particularly notable extra! John won one of the Emmys for this; he is the leading Garland biographer who wrote several books on Judy.) John worked so hard on this profile! John’s fair commentary along with Ava Astaire (Fred Astaire’s daughter) proves to be an trustworthy resource for honorable information about this film and Judy. You also fetch the outtake musical number “Mr. Monotony.” There’s a Judy Garland trailer collection and some promotions for the recent film are provided. Wow! A magnificent two disc space in and of itself.

Bells Are Ringing is Judy Holliday’s last performance; she plays a worker at a telephone answering service who gets overly enthusiastic with her client’s personal lives. Jean Stapleton, a common actress of mine (from All In The Family as Edith) is in this represent as well. This report was nominated for an Oscar for Best Scoring of a Musical Narrate and the song “Honest In Time” is certainly one capable reason why! Outtake musical numbers include “Is It a Crime? ” and “My Guiding Star.” The digital transfer is again ample and the sound quality is splendid. This is definitely a classic musical.

Brigadoon boasts a astounding musical get by Lerner and Lowe. The principle cast is only the best: Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse. An adventurous American suddenly uncovers a magical Scottish town which is only visible one day a century! Does he finish there and perhaps experience a ravishing accurate love; or should he return to his life as it is? Quite the predicament! There are three musical outtakes you want to notice at: “Advance to Me Bend to Me,” “From This Day On,” and “Sword Dance.” An audio outtake and a price unusual digital transfer form this a radiant addition to the box dwelling as well as your DVD collection.

Last, but certainly not least, is Finian’s Rainbow. A extraordinary fanciful musical, this film stars Fred Astaire in his final plump length performance as Finian McLonergan. Somehow Finian steals a pot of gold from Og the leprechaun. Finian and his daughter Sharon (the ravishing Petula Clark) go to America (as does Og) and expend their powers to overcome a rather prejudiced senator. Not only are the musical numbers excellent; the cinematography is superlative and the ending is a overjoyed one! There is an superb commentary by director Francis Ford Coppola and a cute feature on the film’s premiere.

All in all, this is clearly one of the best boxed sets of supremely blooming big musicals and it is very reasonably priced. For me personally this situation was an easy decision-it is already in my personal DVD collection! I highly recommend this boxed position for fans of the substantial American musicals as well as all patrons of the arts. This is also a solid introduction to some of the quality musicals produced on film to date. Equally essential, the hard work and exertion everyone assign into the seemingly countless extras is superlative.

Everybody knows that when it comes down to the final demand in a game of Trivial Pursuit that they should create me try and respond a science query because I know delicate remarkable nothing about science and nature. This is because the one thing I knew about high school biology was that you dissected animals and being sick in front of the smartest girls in school did not appeal to me at all. So I took Life Through the Microscope (it eager drawing) and Ecology (it was the only class that fit my schedule) and missed out on Biology, Chemistry and Physics. However, since I did my dissertation on the wrong Scopes “Monkey” Trial I do have something of an interest in the controversy over evolution if not the understanding itself. This seven-part series exploring various facets of evolution was perfect so someone like me who insists on having theory of any sort mixed with a heavy dose of practice.

“Evolution” is as worthy about the profound impact the evolutionary process has had on our thought of the world around us as it is on the various versions of the theory that have been expounded in scientific textbooks for the past century. The series basically focuses on five key concepts regarding evolution, sandwiched between episodes that constitute a dramatic introduction and a controversial coda:

“Darwin’s Unsafe Understanding” offers dramatizations of key moments in Darwin’s life along with contemporary talking heads explaining the profound implications of the evolutionary theory and the state it holds in the scientific community today as a pivotal plan. It takes a while to adjust to the episodic arrive of the dramatizations, which reach and go without a dependable sense of regularity, but since they dramatized the noted answer of Huxley to Bishop Wilberforce and other key moments in the popularization of evolution there is a distinct effectiveness to it all. What you catch from this episode is a better notion of what the initial complaints were to evolutionary theory and who was making them.

“Stout Transformations” explores the evolutionary changes that caused the fantastic diversity of animal life that exists on earth. The focus is on the development of the four-limbed body understanding, which is explained in the context of how animal life moved from water to land and eventually to human beings, thereby answering the key interrogate of why are human connected to all life.

“Extinction!” represents the flip side of evolutionary transformations, explaining the how and why unhurried the fact that 99.9 percent of all species that have ever lived on earth are now stale. This leads to the animated query as to whether human beings are going to cause the next mass extinction on the planet.

“The Evolutionary Arms Rush” puts the entire opinion of natural selection and survival of the fittest in the context of humanity’s battles with microorganisms, looking at a case watch regarding the reemergence of tuberculosis in Russian prisons. With the alarming spread of resistance among pathogens that cause disease, the episode explains how this particular “accelerate” offers the major threat to human existence. The scary inquire here is whether we are fighting a battle we cannot gather.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Evolution Boxed Set! Click Here

“Why Sex? ” makes the contention that in evolutionary terms sex is more critical than life itself. But on a more pragmatic level is addresses the demand of whether males are primary to perpetuate the species, looking at a wide variety of case studies drawn from nature. This episode also explains the principle of monogamy in evolutionary terms.

“The Mind’s Immense Bang” addresses the interrogate of why humans are the dominant species on earth. The acknowledge is found in the past, when something happened to venerable humans to trigger a creative, technological, and social explosion, which ultimately allowed humans to dominate the planet. The episode tries to declare (literally) the veteran forces that contributed to the emergence of the mind of the unusual human being.

“What About God? ” is the coda to the series in that it returns to the initial put a question to of Darwin’s day regarding the conflict between evolution and religion. The debate is presented within the context of a college student whose family is not contented with what he is learning about evolution at Wesleyan College, a group of high school students trying to glean their local school board to allow the teaching of creationism, and the activities by adults on both sides of the ask to come by this pivotal battle. I assume the episode to be remarkably even-handed, but then I do not reflect there is an inherent conflict between the two, which invalidates my belief for suitable believers on both sides.

Overall I like the fact that “Evolution” goes for depth rather than breadth. The case studies, at least to my uneducated mind, advance across as being representative of the jabber under discussion. The DVD series also features access to the Evolution Web set with its interactive games, activities, and biographies, so those who would like to come by additional information and insight on any one of these topics can easily do so. There are also student lessons for teachers who want to work these episodes into their science classes and a printable teacher’s guide (remember, “Evolution” was produced by WGBH Boston, which means we are talking–surprise–public television) .

Wow!!! This series is as unbelievable as any laypersons textbook I’ve ever read on evolution. Each episode is not only a discourse (in the most envigorating scheme possible) about a different aspect of evolution, and not only does each justify the theories within that aspect but each does a tremendous job of making them relevant to life today. What does ‘cultural evolution’ of transportation have to do with the cycle of extinctions. How can is the success of the AIDS virus to be attributed to what can only be called a flaw in its copying apparatus? How can we exercise that knowledge to our advantage in the struggle against its effects?

Honestly, there are only dinky criticisms I have about each. The first - and how relatively trivial it is - is that for every episode, I was able to reflect of 4 more episodes that I would have liked to observe, or at least 4 more topics that each could’ve covered. Evolutionary psychology was, to a tremendous degree, left unexplored but for a 10 shrimp passage. The punctuated equilibrium vs. Dawkinian incremental evolution debate - for as specialized as it seems it is serene a Tremendous debate within biology - was ignored and most of all, sociobiology was not touched on. So many facets so tiny DVD area! Composed, I couldn’t seize away a star unbiased for these trifles.

Here’s a brief overview of each episode and its highlights.

Darwins Perilous Opinion - Probably the dullest episode of all. Alternates between Darwins relevance today and BBC style reenactment of his life

Great Transformations - The origin (or suspected origin) of life and from it, the quadropods - that is, four leggeed spined creatures. Enchanting discussion of our similarities to other quadropods in past and point to.

Extinctions - If 99% of animals are outmoded, will we be and why are we not yet? Obliging discussion of interconnectedness of eco-system - one thing propping up others.

Evolutionary Arms Hurry - Animated episode about the head-to-head competition for survival. Why are adaptations handy and what really is human beings helpul adaptation? Is it language, tool making, conceptual thinking…what?

Why Sex? - Why males are on the surface superfluous (gulp) but really a suitable thing evolutionarily (sight, I always hiss women we’re suitable for something) . Different male/female connections in different species and how species attract opposite sex. Great but short lead into evolutionary biology, especially ideas of Geoffrey Miller.

The Minds Grand Bang - Another large episode dealing with how, why and when the mind may have developed. Why did such a weird mutation note successful? Was it all at once or in itsy-bitsy improvements? The episode is a bit one-sided as it speculates that by in mammoth, language was the brains function rather than conceptual understanding.

What about God? - One of the best episodes and the most philosophical in nature. Why do creationists loathe evolution and why do evolutionists go out of their scheme to block creationism from schools. Meet high school and college (Christian college) students who are striving to collect a connection between evolution and God. As one of the few atheists I’ve met who DOES NOT hold evolution as given, I found this episode, chock rotund of Christians who believed in evolution, too, a satisfactory closer of the series.

Overall, the only other comment/complaint I had (again, no subracted star) was that contrary to the last reviewer, I reflect that any science that calls itself a science needs to be able to welcome criticism. It would’ve been capable for this series to focus a bit more on, not only outside criticisms like creationism, but criticisms from the inside, like Steven Gould’s ’spandrel’ notion. Serene, if the intersted viewer wants to digest those, there is a surfeit of literature. This DVD site will accumulate you more alive to in evolution than you plan possible. Check it out!

Terry Gilliam’s classic satire returns to DVD in a spiffed up edition from Criterion. Featuring a high definition anamorphic remaster the record looks broad (and it has been enhanced for 16×9 TVs so it will gain the veil) the sound has been remastered as well. Is it worth picking up again? Absolutely if you’re a fan of the film. The single disc edition is basically the same as the first disc in the three disc set–it includes Gilliam’s commentary track as share of the package as well as the “Final Nick” version of the film that runs 142 minutes (vs. 131 for the regular DVD release) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Brazil - The Criterion Collection! Click Here

If you purchased the three disc site and want to upgrade you could impartial hold up this single disc edition as the extras are exactly the same as the previous edition (unless you want the remastered “Esteem Conquers All” 92 small edit done by Universal to design it more commercial) . Be aware though that the single disc edition doesn’t have any of the material from the third disc of the boxed residence. That disc documented the insanity that surrounded the film when Universal deemed it not commercial enough.

Why it took Criterion so long to win this current improved version to market is anyone’s guess (and why it took them so long to adopt anamorphic transfers as well) . This really is the device it should have been released in the first state. Either method this edition looks and sounds expansive. It has a terrific commentary track by director Gilliam, an essay but no other extras.

There are a million different takes on the proper movie “Brazil,” but what I hope to do in this review is actually rate the collection assign together by Criterion.

The 3-DVD box dwelling of “Brazil” starts off with the “final final” director’s slit of the film, topping out at 142 minutes. (There are eight minutes of footage added to this release.) The film is presented in its unique 1.85:1 dimensions. Fact is, the transfer of the movie is so-so.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Brazil - The Criterion Collection! Click Here

For all the Criterion hoopla, the print here is flawed. The notes pay tribute to a few digital scratch removers, but I was truly surprised by the amount of garbage in the print (dirt, empty spots, and such) that litter the frames. One of Sam’s initial dream flights has great gunk inhabiting the lower left corner, and any frame by frame analysis will content an endless parade of bits of stuff inhabiting every shot. To be just, I expected a lot more here and if there is any criticism of this collection, it lies with this fault primarily. They could have cleaned everything up considerably more than they did. And that’s a shame at this mark.

Colors and difference in the print view gracious, though, and the sound is wonderful. They pulled out a paunchy stereo soundtrack and made it assert, so kudos there, too. The sound is well-organized and vibrant.

The booklet detailing the film is genuine, but not the best I’ve seen, even for a lesser boxset. The direct listings for the other two DVDs are cramped more than a single overview sheets.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Brazil - The Criterion Collection! Click Here

Director Terry Gilliam’s commentary track on the first disc is priceless and entertaining, almost gracious of the cost for the status alone. As a film geek, I personally gather all director commentaries to be gripping, so I may not be the best deem. In this case, though, Gilliam gives us a rich witness at the film that stands up to the best of other directors’s commentaries I’ve heard.

Criterion’s skimping on the booklets is made up for in the second disc, which contains all the background of the film. “The Battle of Brazil” is the high point as Gilliam and some of the Universal Studios execs discuss the crazy backstory that almost led to the demise of the film as we know it. The film’s handlers and financiers all fretted that they had an arthouse part that would go nowhere, but Gilliam refused to build the desired cuts or to swerve from the darkness of the ending. It wasn’t until he managed to sneak a final edit of the movie to the Los Angeles Film Critics organization that he was able to outduel the execs. When the critics lauded the film and lavished their prizes on it, the naysayer’s bluff was called and the film was released, albeit to only modest box-office that barely made relieve its money. Film critic Jack Matthews hosts this slightly more than an hour examination of the battle between the creative forces and the forces of pragmatism.

The second DVD also includes “What is Brazil? ” - a mostly throwaway gradual the scenes observe at the making of the film that features the cast and some of the writers. I didn’t procure it particularly illuminating.

The tall disappointment in the second DVD is that many of the production notes covering the fabricate, special effects, fetch, and more are not filmed, but simply text. I wanted more than that. Somewhat disappointing. There are some respectable insights into the flying effects in the dream sequences, though. That grand of it was model work is simply fantastic.

The last DVD features the bowdlerized, 94 miniature TV syndication release of the film dubbed “Admire Conquers All.” This blissful ending version was done apart from Gilliam and probably represents what the studio heads had hoped would be the released version. “Atrocious” is too kind a word to expend to report this version. Critic David Morgan’s commentary notes all that was left out, and a few scenes that were added relieve in. While this version isn’t worth your time, it is beneficial of inclusion in the place, fleshing out the madness that almost killed the movie entirely.

I have always considered “Brazil” to be genius, frankly. As a dystopia, the world it portrays out-Orwells them all. If you loathe bureaucracy–and who but bureaucrats doesn’t–then this is the film for you. And only Gilliam would be plucky enough to compose a renegade HVAC repairman a mythically dauntless addition to that world.

Plenty of people don’t procure this movie and I don’t know why. Roger Ebert loved “Black City,” but passed on “Brazil,” inexplicably, so even critics aren’t perfect. Many of today’s films owe considerable to “Brazil” and that alone makes it considerable.

In the kill, three stars for the package and five for the film itself. The lack of a more pristine print subtracts two burly stars from what would have otherwise been a perfect review, however. Criterion’s boxset, though flawed, is peaceful the best method to experience the film, so if you are a fan of “Brazil” or Gilliam’s work, this is the only map to cruise.

PAJAMA PARTY is probably the second best-loved sequel of the new BEACH PARTY (the first has to be the quintessential BEACH BLANKET BINGO) . The party moves indoors for the extraordinary romp with Annette Funicello and the gang.

Connie (Annette Funicello) finds herself being chased by a splendid martian from Mars, Go-Go (Tommy Kirk), while trying to keep her relationship with the self-obsessed Huge Lunk (Jody McCrea) . Thankfully, agreeable dress-shop owner Aunt Wendy (Elsa Lanchester) is on hand to offer advice to the younger generation about matters of admire and the heart.

Annette and the gang trade their beach threads for pajamas and baby-dolls in this very cute musical. Annette sings the classic standard “Stuffed Animal”, while Donna Loren will have you jumping with “That’s The Draw It’s Done”.

Then there are wonderful cameos from film veterans Buster Keaton and Don Rickles; while Dorothy Lamour shows she could mild ‘cut a rug’ with the best of them with her infectious number.

Interestingly, the “pajama party” of the title doesn’t happen until the last 20 minutes of the describe! Followed by BEACH BLANKET BINGO.

The DVD has both full-frame and widescreen versions of the film as well as the trailer. (Double-sided, single-layer disc) .

No doubt this is the best of the Beach Movies…the only movie from this category that’s as worthy (better, actually) is Ski Party…but apt luck getting Ski Party on video, laserdisc or DVD. Enough about Ski Party. Pajama Party (not Rated R, as one reviewer got confused…he mistakenly looked at Playboy’s documentary) doesn’t play as ditsy unwatchably humdrum as some of the others. It doesn’t have overly cornball songs that only a 5 year ragged would delight in. In Pajama Party, the songs are actually catchy (notably, the intro song, the title song, the Tommy/Annette duet, and of course, Dorothy Lamour’s number) and the residence doesn’t bore you to tears with thoughtless wandering. This movie is actually exciting from inaugurate to carry out. Buster Keaton is large as the cowardly indian chief. Susan Hart is hotter than HOT. Donna Loren is cute and an delightful singer, and Toni Basil makes some dancing appearances that are backed by better music.

If you’re going to glean a Beach movie and aren’t distinct what to resolve from, here’s something to consider: Buying Pajama Party will obtain future beach movie purchases disappointing, since no other beach movie compares to Pajama Party (again, except for Ski Party) . Then again, if you do occupy this movie, you’ll definitely have the best one of the bunch. For my taste, Pajama Party is the only beach movie I’ll seize. Having it on DVD is a accurate treat…especially since the music in the movie is so toothsome (Donna Loren’s “Among the Young” is the best song in the movie) .

Chris Rock follows up his 1996 hit “Bring the Hurt” with another hilarious 1-hr routine. As always, Chris serves up his brutally fair opinions on the social and political nightmares we live in today. In this performance you’ll accumulate him tackling school gun violence, the scrape of Native Americans, Ricky Martin, delinquent parents, racism, police brutality, incurable diseases, taxes, and a host of other issues. What makes Chris Rock so hilarious is that his commentary not only rings accurate but hits upon feelings and thoughts most of us have but are often apprehensive to notify in today’s “politically suitable” atmosphere. Plus, Chris’ naturally funny-looking physical appearance adds color to his performance. As with many other comedians, Chris Rock ends up spending a large deal of time on cliche comedian fodder such as sex and man-woman relationships. Thankfully, Chris Rock has managed to avoid tired customary jokes and build hilarious fresh spins on these topics.

If you want incandescent comedy, this is the video for you! However, be forewarned that Chris Rock has a penchant for using the “f” word when emphasizing points, which some may acquire annoying after a while, and he is hump to say something that may offend someone. Nonetheless, I mediate that’s what makes Chris Rock large and universal. Although Chris caters to an African-American audience, he ultimately has ideas that speaks to all segments of society- conservatives, liberals, white/black/asian/latino, homosexual, religious, non-religious, etc. A notion that one segment of society finds spicy is scramble to be held in disdain by another.

I must admit, in the past year that I’ve become a Chris Rock fan, I’ve found it difficult to peer other comedians. Few are as hard-hitting as Chris Rock. Acquire this video to glimpse what I mean! While you are at it, find “Bring the Injure”- this one packs even more punch than “Bigger and Blacker”.

This was unbiased an absolute delight to perceive. Chris Rock comes at you with topic after topic and always blends everything smoothly together(like the Ricky Martin livin’ la vita loca and the robotusim jokes throughout the night) . This is a top notch performance from a top notch comedian. Even if you’re not a Chris Rock fan you must respect his work on “Bigger & Blacker”. His presence on the stage is astonishing and his performance is even more spectacular. Chris Rock is a very sparkling comedian that shows you a vision of the world we tend to cloak or ignore. After seeing this reveal so many times I started to ask myself how can he remember and deliever his act so smoothly. It seems like as if Chris Rock is having a regular conversation with the crowd as he performs on stage. Chris tackles enough issues in this indicate to have everyone (shaded or white) to recount to the material in some intention. There is no doubt about it, this DVD is big and if you didn’t notice it on HBO or home video then you need to lift up this DVD. The mark on this DVD is agreeable but the reveal itself is mammoth. A Must have for accurate fans of comedy. ( lustrous or droll )

To fair the technical info above, this DVD (both the special edition and movie-only edition) DOES HAVE an English monophonic soundtrack that was originally weak in the film. Also included is a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, but one wonders if a dialog-heavy film like this should really need a surround soundtrack. Dialogs in both the mono and the 5.1 tracks sound perfectly distinct and understable. The surround sound only comes into exercise during the occasional music and gunfight sequences. I do applaud the inclusion of the fresh mono track, which quite a few unusual DVDs of older movies do not provide in the hope of enticing fresh DVD owners with 5.1 audio.

The video transfer looks big — images are engrossing, levels of dim inspect realistic (you can clearly look and feel the velvety texture of a shaded robe Monroe wears), signs of wear and slump are virtually non-existent. The portray aspect ratio is 1.66:1, which is not the 1:85:1 ratio old for the new US theatrical release and for all previous US letterboxed laserdisc releases. The 1.66:1 ratio adds a runt portray to the top, but doesn’t really affect the composition. The video is also non-anamorphic, so the resolution is not as high on a widescreen TV as it would be with an anamorphic DVD. There is also no English optional subtitles, but there are yellow optional French and Spanish ones.

I would have gladly paid a higher impress if they had included better supplementary material on the Special Edition DVD, such as the audio commentary and home movies that were establish on the Criterion laserdisc made in the early 90s. The extras on the Special Edition DVD include a arresting but superficial 30-minute fresh interview with Tony Curtis reminiscing about the film, a rather tiresome 12-minute interview with the actresses who played the girl band members, a segment called “Virtual Hall of Memories” that is essentially a calm gallery, and trailers of 7 Wilder films including SOME LIKE IT HOT; all the trailers are in terrible video condition. The most provocative extra is a reproduction of a pressbook for the film, but the pictures are blurry and the smaller text is illegible. I am disappointed that we never procure to hear from Jack Lemmon or Billy Wilder, both level-headed alive, on this DVD. These extras are not impressive, so one may reflect buying the movie-only edition for a cheaper impress.

Billy Wilder’s most celebrated comedy finally receives the deluxe treatment it deserves. MGM previously released this classic comedy in a nonanamorphic widescreen version a couple of years serve. While that edition looked dazzling decent this anamorphic transfer puts any previous editions (including my remarkable favored laserdisc edition) to shame. Wilder’s comedy operates as a spoof of gangster films and a comedy about gender roles. Jerry (the gradual Jack Lemmon) and Joe (Tony Curtis) are two musicians on the lam when they eye the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. With Spats Columobo (George Raft) and his men looking for the duo they go undercover as musicians rotten dressing and joining an all female band headed for a gig in Florida. Becoming a woman allows Joe/Josephine to spent time with Sugar (Marilyn Monroe) the latest woman that catches Joe’s esteem. Jerry/Daphne on the other hand finds himself romanced by a rich man (Joe E. Brown) who won’t buy the hint as Jerry tries to blow off his advances.

And you opinion the 50’s were tame. One of Wilder’s richest 50’s comedies “Some Like It Hot” continues to be very droll inverting our expectations constantly and playing with the roles that Jerry and Joe consume on with their unusual identities. Joe’s eyes inaugurate the most as before he was a handsome ruthless womanizer. Becoming a woman puts him in the crosshairs of every male insight and he’s on the receiving ruin of all the smirks, comments and passes that he would have old with Sugar before his change. Wilder mixes social commentary so deftly with comedy (like Hitchcock’s work with suspense and social commentary) that at his best–and he’s at his best here–it reminds us how engaging a movie can be without being heavy handed. It’s also filled with some satisfactory in jokes (for example Colombo played by George Raft observes a thug flipping a coin and comments, “Where did you select up that cheap trick? ” Raft of course did the real thing in one of his signature roles in “Scarface” from 1932) .

A stout movie looks even better in this spirited looking transfer. The sad and white imagery of the film looks comely. Originally Marilyn Monroe lobbied to have the film shot in color which Billy Wilder felt wouldn’t work for this comedy (he persuaded her to agree to shoot in shaded and white when he showed her develop up tests for Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in color where their form up as women made them spy slightly green) while the film certainly would have looked spacious in color the sumptuous cinematography by Charles Lang (”The Pleasing Seven”, “Wait Until Dusky”) looks extremely grand in this extraordinary looking transfer. Detail is quite obedient and blacks are solid with a nice array of different textures evident in the transfer. Audio is presented in the modern mono and sounds comely.

For those that are into such things the special features here are a titanic improvement over the previous edition. We rep a commentary track compiled from comments by the tedious Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and I.A.L. Diamond’s son (working with the comedy writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel–honestly I could have concept of better writers to pair with Diamond’s son) . While the insights aren’t exactly a revelation it is an delicious commentary track.

We also fetch two terrific documentaries on the making of the film. The first features a mixture of recent and older interviews from the cast and crew. The second documentary “The Legacy of `Some Like it Hot’” is packed with trivia about the making of the film, Wilder & Monroe’s relationship on the position and the difficult time Wilder had making the film with his leading lady including footage shot in the 80’s of Wilder and Diamond.

Finally we secure “Memories from the Sweet Sues” featurette with members of the women who played in the band, an interview with Tony Curtis entitled “Nostalgic Behold Serve” where Curtis reveals that actor/voice artist Paul Frees did noteworthy of his negate as Josephine because he had anxiety reaching the high recount. We also accumulate the imaginatively titled but unimpressive “Virtual Hall of Memories 3-D Tour” The fresh pressbook appears on the DVD as well and we secure reproductions of various lobby cards. Finally we gather previews and the new theatrical trailer.

Far more impressive than the lackluster previous DVD releases “Some Like It Hot” looks solid in this re-release although the film could gawk a bit more vibrant. The featurettes are, for the most section, very pleasurable and the compiled commentary track adds loads of trivia (some of which is duplicated in the featurettes) about the making of the film. I do wish that a film historian such as UCLA professor Howard Suber had been enthusiastic in some map to succor provide context for the movie but that’s unbiased personal preference. A heavenly release that could have been stout with a wee bit more pain on the share of Sony/MGM.

Dean Stockwell is an assistant press secretery for the stupidest president in U.S. history. On a drag to Transylvania, Stockwell is attacked and wounded by a werewolf. Upon his return, senators and reporters initiate dying in grizzly ways. Stockwell tries to whine the president and his staff that he’s become a murderous lycanthrope, but they’d rather point the finger at those darned “hippies” or gain it a racial thing. After all, how could a werewolf legend possibly attend them politically? WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON is a political satire disguised as a monster movie. It has it’s worthy moments as well as those moments that beget you want to send Dean Stockwell on a Sincere quantum leap. Probably best viewed if you’re an insomniac and it’s 3am…

America is fighting an unpopular war; the President is trying to shift the balance of the Supreme Court with his judicial nominee; the front line of political debate is an out-of-control press, and there’s a wild man running around who looks rather disturbingly like Howard Dean. No, I’m not talking about the plot of affairs in 2005; I’m talking about Werewolf of Washington, an undeniably unusual 1973 film that combines fright, comedy, and political parody in ways I would never have imagined on my maintain. I’m going to go ahead and slap a “you’ve got to peep it to bear it” sticker on this one. This is clearly a very peculiar product of its times - it is, in a word, kooky.

Dean Stockwell plays Jack Whittier, a hotshot young reporter with a stop connection to the White House (in the design of the First Daughter) ; his notion of ending the relationship fervent getting a transfer to Hungary, of all places, and making it leer like his newspaper sent him there as some kind of punishment. The President (Biff McGuire) thinks he was banished for his salubrious articles on the White House, so he snatches Jack up as his fresh press agent. Before Jack can score out of Budapest, however, he goes and gets himself bitten by a werewolf. After his return to Washington, he starts seeing pentagrams on lift people’s hands and experiencing blackouts during the times those people are killed. (The writers work in not one but two pentagram-Pentagon confusion jokes, which gives you a blooming respectable concept of the comedic effectiveness of this whole film.) Eventually, Jack figures out that he has indeed been cursed, but no one really believes his claims that he is a werewolf - certainly not the President, who becomes thicker and thicker in the head as the legend progresses. The transformations are attractive - it’s unbiased your standard time-lapse photography, but the early phase has Jack scrunching his face all over the set, and I enlighten he looks exactly like Howard Dean when he pushes his jaw out and gets that “Yeeeoooooow” watch in his eyes. Once the transformation is complete, though, Jack honest looks like an idiot - this may be the stupidest-looking werewolf in the history of cinema.

Once the whole werewolf setup is complete, the movie gets down to some serious (and seriously terrible) political parody work. You’ve got hippies and other subversives for the Attorney General and FBI to sustain their search for on, you’ve got the Watergate Hotel, you’ve got the President “cleverly” sidestepping questions he doesn’t want to retort, and you’ve even got a miniature Agnew humor thrown in for valid measure. The President’s a dunderhead who gets stranger as his political serve erodes, but the Attorney General is the precise share of work on indicate here. He’s too impartial for his occupy helpful, according to the President, and he’s a master at speaking without thinking (unbiased contemplate how lickety-split he jumps from werewolf to Dark Panther when it comes to a kill suspect) . Then there’s the war room meeting - I can’t even originate to represent that scene. Toss in a “you won’t have Jack Whittier to kick around anymore” line at the destroy, wrap it all up, and you’ve got the most novel werewolf film I’ve ever seen.

The political satire bit (which you’ve really got to inspect for yourself to be pleased - or not) is the only thing that makes this hairy dog of a movie remotely spellbinding. As fright, it’s a total bomb. It basically strikes out when it comes to the comedy thing, too - but at least it’s a unfamiliar, animated kind of bomb in that regard.
