Movie serials were written for youngsters but, as screenwriter Barry Shipman observed, this was not a putdown: “No, it’s for the 12-year-old in all of us.” Republic did them best, and “Adventures of Captain Marvel” is one of Republic’s best (some say THE best) . The flying superhero is based on a 1940s to 1950s amusing book character, who went out of business after being sued by DC, the publishers of Superman, as a ripoff (in more unusual years, he has been acquired and revived by DC; go figure) . DC had a chance to have Superman serialized at Republic, but passed (the script was revised to become “The Mysterious Dr. Satan” with a non-super hero) ; Superman serials later came from Columbia with cartoon flying sequences. When the promoters of the Chris Reeve/Superman movie said it would be the first time audiences would fill a man could sail, they obviously hadn’t seen the Captain Marvel serial.

Definitely the finest of the old-time movie serials, and the finest live action version of Captain Marvel. This movie was voted by Wizard magazine as the best comics-to-movie adaptation ever.

It has decent special effects and a shapely record. A classic desert adventure, including furious horde, offended god, and stalwart hero. The flying sequences are well done. The cliff hangers are appropriately dramatic. The Scorpion is a nice serial villain, complete with hooded face and ultimate weapon, and Captain Marvel remains my current hero.

If you like serials or Captain Marvel you really can’t go contemptible with this.

I reflect many, when looking at the main star of this point to (Bryan Cranston) will have only really been familiar with him from Malcolm In The Middle. He hears about a raid on a crystal meth lab that seizes millions of dollars worth of drugs which he decides that he must be a share of that. He knows how to compose the best crystal meth ever seen, but not how to come by it on the streets which is why he must enlist the relieve of his weak student and drug pusher Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) .

I honestly didn’t have high hopes for this note as, although I’m a ample fan of Bryan Cranston for his work on Malcolm In The Middle, I struggled to possess he could pull off such a yelp smash of a character. The family is a typical middle class American family struggling to hold care of their disabled son trying to execute him have as normal a life as possible. In a scheme I can characterize to the position as I’m disabled myself and know how worthy of a strain it can be on parents. Distinct, it’s not the same disability, but the family struggling through it is definitely displayed well and R.J. Mitte as Walter Jr. is an trustworthy fit. Although I’m betting he was only cast because he too has Cerebral Palsy, he serene fits the bill and plays the character brilliantly.

Fantastic, extraordinary expose. I don’t want to advise you noteworthy about the seasons events as it is quite short and risks spoiling sure events. I have to relate you that there are times in which this indicate doesn’t own succor. Just to wrap it up I can only really say this TV exhibit is wonderful in every design and I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. Bryan Cranston is a very underrated actor, but he’s clear to expose himself for which he does a terrific job. When this DVD situation comes out in the UK I’ll certainly be one of the first to assume it.

First I want to say that this series is expansive and if you haven’t seen it yet or are unsure about it, the second season is currently airing on AMC, so try to come by a few of them to fetch a better conception. If you like those episodes or if you’re one of the people who already adore this series then this DVD boxed area is for you. It contains the complete first season of AMC’s Breaking Poor in seven one hour long episodes.

Some people have said that the modern season has taken too long to air but they must not realize AMC and HBO assume a year between seasons of all their stout shows. The second season is currently airing (started March 8th 2009), which happens to be one year after the first. Only the first episode into the second season and already it’s become more riveting, intense, dramatic and complex than the first season. The second season premiere really left us with a hideous ending that leaves one eagerly awaiting how the rest of the season will follow.

I feel this explain and the quality being save into it will benefit compose it the next version of the Wire, while Aroused Men is more like the equivilant to the next version of Sopranos yet both shows are something entirely of their occupy. I suggest fans of television that is made like movies give both these series a try. For those who were around when these shows were first broadcast, this will be a swagger down memory lane that you’ll want to pick again and again, because this is the kind of stuff you can notice over and over and it somehow unprejudiced keeps getting funnier. For the younger crowd who only know the unusual incarnation of Saturday Night Live, this will be a genuine eye-opener, because the “comedy” we’re subjected to today simply doesn’t bear a candle to that proffered by the Not Quite Ready For Prime Time Players of the early, “golden” years of SNL, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Bill Murray, Garret Morris and Gilda Radner. And when Martin joined this bunch as host, well…it fair didn’t earn any better than that.

Does this mean that everything the modern chop of comics foists upon an unsuspecting audience is without merit and that everything the SNL gang did in `78 and `79 was a masterpiece of comedy to be enshrined in stone? Of course not; the nature of comedy being what it is, and given the fact that the early SNL players were on the cutting edge of things that had never been done on TV before, it follows that some of the bits were not only going to fail, but go down in flames. There were even entire shows attend then that weren’t comic at all. But stacked against most of what comes down the pike today, there objective isn’t any comparison. Times change, attitudes change, people change; and with that, comedy must necessarily change. But that doesn’t mean necessarily for the better.

One reviewer suggested that whoever is responsible for this DVD had access to minute resources. If that is honest, then I advise we should be elated with whatever we can gain, and should be grateful that someone managed to set aside a DVD together at all. But the fact that we are in such a “beggars can’t be choosers” plot is pathetic in itself.

Nevertheless, what the DVD does beget is gold, and the note does judge the brevity. Steve Martin’s comedy is worth every penny.

I’d like to open this review with my pre-viewing expectations - - ZILCH! I had never heard of this movie, had not viewed the trailer or read the box, I unbiased sat down on my sofa as my husband pressed “play” on the remote and jumped moral in with both feet. The first few minutes made me squirm, I was thinking “oh no, a movie glorifying drugs, with lots of F-words and thick accents”, but the narration of the main character, Imprint Renton, was intellectually stimulating, so I listened more closely and allowed myself to become immersed in the yarn. The characters in this legend are horrible, heroin-addicted losers, but they are portrayed as very dependable people - - yes, they are poor, but they are not improper. Their lives are extremely grim and unpleasant. I’ve always wondered how people addicted to heroin can live their lives thinking they are living normally, and the addiction is so considerable it renders them powerless to live any other design, but then I realized almost anything can be considered an addiction - - we all wrestle with something, be it our weight, our ethics, our punctuality, etc.. Moments when we convince ourselves it will be the last time, until the next time.

The film makes some captivating comparisons between a “normal” life, and the curved lives of these characters. You discover miniature hypocrisies, such as the friend in the pub railing against drug expend, while he obviously has an alcohol and an anger-management scrape. This film also addresses the issues of loyalty, culture, politics - - with some scathing commentary on consumerism and capitalism - - and some digs at the “Objective Say No” and “Settle Life” rallying cries. I particularly liked the ending - - there were no sweeping revelations for the characters, they remained just to their weaknesses, right to their characters.

There are plenty of dark, sick moments, and there are some very comical moments, even through the darkness, and the wit of each character is wonderful. Some of the most imaginative sequences I enjoyed immensely, but felt as though they could’ve done without the extremism and quiet kept a superior flowing account. Smooth, they certainly made a strong point in the scene captivating the most disgusting toilet in Scotland. As for the dialogue, I am going to have to peruse it again, unbiased to execute obvious I caught it all. My husband and I finally admitted we weren’t concept the dialogue as fully as we would’ve liked, so we switched to the “hearing-impaired” sub-titles about 30 minutes into the film. The Scottish accents are the thickest!

The acting is terrific, across the board. I was shy - - impartial flabbergasted! - - as the film ended and I saw Ewan McGregor was Tag Renton! He looked so gaunt and ill, not the charming and elegant Ewan McGregor of ‘Moulin Rouge’!

Definitely not a movie for the kids, ‘Trainspotting’ is a film everyone should examine once, even if the topic is unsettling. Plus, I give it extra stars for utilizing my common descriptive noun - - “wanker”. I also appreciated the integration of Iggy Pop’s song “Lust for Life”, intellectual that it was written after Iggy had kicked his heroin habit and had a newfound lust for life. I’m unprejudiced joyful to hear that song ancient anywhere other than car commercials!

Is the rhetorical query asked by Renton (Ewan McGregor) early on in the movie. That sums up the complete gain that heroin exerts on the lives of main characters of the movie and the horrendous consequences of this addiction.

I have heard that Trainspotting has been criticized as glorifing drugs. People making this comment must be out of their minds. I have never seen such a grand indictment of heroin and its effects and I ever had any inclination to try the stuff then a single viewing of the movie cured me forever.

Most movies that I leer leave no lasting impression on me but many of the scenes in Trainspotting will end with me for a very long time. There are moments that beget you laugh out loud (Spud’s job interview for example) and others that are some of the most great and disturbing film images that I have ever seen.

Danny Boyle and co. have do a marvellous job of making a film about right people and precise lives while making it compelling viewing at the same time. The soundtrack is salubrious objective to round off the experience.

Actually I want to have a dvd edition of the musical play that was broadcast (too long to video tape,) a few years ago on PBS! The movie was glowing, but art lovers everywhere want the valid thing! I believe mankind deserves dependable broadway masterpieces shown as they exist on the stage!

This DVD is a major disappointment. Like so many other Sondheim fans, I’d been looking forward to this release because the 1978 film is–for better or worse–a rare relate of one of my popular Broadway shows. But, the film itself aside, this DVD is a predicament. It is not professionally done. It’s supposed to be a original, widescreen print in Dolby stereo, but it isn’t. It’s a poor, scratchy frail print, and the “widescreen” is apparently stretched out from a fullscreen TV print. The framing is so poor that the opening titles are all prick off, like on an ancient TV print. And the soundtrack is mono–not even very distinct mono. There are more glitches and scratches and sudden jumps (indicating reel changes on used movie theater equipment) than you can count.

I assert, this looks and sounds like it was taken from a TV broadcast with second-rate equipment. Try pausing the record, and you’ll recognize the horizontal lines that exhibit a broadcast on an customary TV. But in a time with high divorce rates, it seems to believe the trials and tribulations of a family divided and patched together by divorce and family ties.

Like all sitcoms, it takes odd situations and runs with them, like Cheyenne going into labor during graduation, or Reba accidently sewing her pants to Barbara Jean’s wedding dress. It has quite a bit of physical and verbal humor; nothing too special, but quite silly anyhow.

Reba McEntire makes this sitcom, with her flexible face and slightly wild physical humor, and is backed up in that by Peterman’s wonderfully overdone Barbara Jean. Garcia and Howey have apt chemistry as the ideal students-turned-teen-parents, and Rich is alternately slimy and endearing as Reba’s semi-repentent ex.

With its non-traditional family theme and McEntire’s funny/heartwarming performances, “Reba” becomes a bit more than your average sitcom. And the first season is definitely worth checking out.

There are many stunning reviews of “Glory” to be found here. I feel the same diagram about this astounding film, and after touching on the memoir I would like to talk about this DVD release(perceive above) which is an outstanding quality and favorable value.

“Glory” is an exceptional film. A honest fable of the Civil War that is both touching and inspirational. Being a Civil War reenactor, as a group we tend to be very skeptical of the historical movies that hollywood provides.Glory is probably the only movie that almost every reenactor liked and sung the praises for. Glory stands out as a masterpiece of this dreadful time in the nations history. The cast was outstanding. Broderick is entirely convincing in his role as the idealistic young Colonel Robert Gould Shaw who commanded ONE of the first all gloomy units of the Civil war. Morgan freeman captures the persona of the “wise, faded seargeant” that is a classic motif of the war movie genre. However to me the actor who steals the reveal is without a doubt Denzel Washington. The battle scenes were outstanding and gave war its “hellish” notion that was absent in Gettysburg to immense degree. Only Private Ryan beats this movie in its conclude at showing the viewer a taste of War.

Glory has also been arguable the most influential Civil War movie of all time. I read on various sites, including “Ain’t It Icy,” that 20-30 minutes would be added and the overall tone of the portray would be darker.

This was a couple of years ago and I haven’t seen anything modern on it.

I understand Mr. Beatty and Disney have gotten into some honest issues regarding who has rights over the film. I unbiased hope they are resolved rapidly and Mr. Beatty can accept the Director’s Slash out.

The script lives up to its subject, a cartoon strip, but fans of the old-fashioned Dick Tracy won’t be disappointed. Our former celebrated characters are all there and the soundtrack, especially Madonna’s sexy “Sooner or Later” is incredible. The production values are immense, with a distinct droll book feel and appearance, and even if we didn’t glean all these enormous items to luxuriate in, there’s the cameo and casting with some of Hollywood’s brightest stars. Definitely worth adding to your DVD collection

Creator Joss Whedon has become one of the most talented writer/directors working in the industry today, despite the fact that “Buffy” is most of what he’s been doing for the last five years.

She’s spicy up the ranks as her competitors go down… One of the best episodes in the position.

“Teacher’s Pet” features Xander, as he and all the other guys go gaga for a novel substitute teacher. But Buffy’s suspicious when she sees the teacher do a head-twist, Exorcist-style. Unfortunately, Xander’s already in her trap…

“Never Raze a Boy on the First Date” is a more laughable episode. Buffy tries to have a social life, but those pesky slaying commitments sustain getting in the map. She finally ends up dragging her date to the funeral home when they accept that an traditional prophecy is coming to pass…

In “Angel,” the mysterious Angel’s secret is revealed: he’s a vampire! (As if it were a surprise to anyone.) But when Buffy thinks he’s fed on her mother, she has to execute a decision: can she bring herself to end him?

The spotlight’s on Willow in “I Robot, You Jane.” When introspective Will starts an online romance, Buffy’s a minute unnerved. But when it turns out that there’s a demon in the Internet - and that he’s Willow’s “boyfriend” - things collect particularly hairy. This episode introduces computer teacher and technopagan Jenny Calendar, Giles’ sometimes girlfriend and a pivotal character in Season Two.

“The Puppet Demonstrate” is the series’ token creepy-ventriloquist’s-dummy episode. Giles has been drafted for the school talent demonstrate, but several of the participants have turned up rather monotonous. Buffy suspects one of the stranger kids’ ventriloquist dummy is tedious the deaths. Though this episode is not the strongest of the season, an delicious and unexpected twist makes it calm eminently watchable.

In “The Pack,” Xander’s started to act humorous - snarling at his friends and hanging out with the bullies. It all started when he entered the hyena cage at the zoo. But can Buffy figure it out before things secure out of hand and somebody gets…well, eaten?

“Nightmares” brings everyone’s worst nightmares to life. Buffy’s father tells her he doesn’t treasure her, while bookworm Giles forgets how to read. In “Out of Mind, Out of Spy,” an invisible girl is terrorizing Cordelia and her associates. She comes to Buffy for support, and Buffy gives it (albeit very reluctantly) . But when the attacks coincide with the crowning of Cordelia as the unusual May Queen, problems arise - gargantuan surprise.

The state ends on a high brand with “Prophecy Girl.” Giles finds a prophecy that predicts Buffy’s death at the hands of the Master. It deals very clearly with Buffy’s bleak realization of her beget mortality, and ends with a showstopping showdown between Buffy and the Master. Quite possibly the best episode in this state.

I can’t recommend this boxed space highly enough. Extras, like interviews with Joss Whedon (the creator) and David Boreanaz (Angel) round out the station. A worthwhile assume both for Buffy fans and those wanting to observe what the fuss is all about.

The scenery is lovely, as expected from a Discovery Channel telecast. The people are quite different than any I had hear about. It

was an educational experience and an delightful learning time. It’s a chance to peek places in the world that your probably do not want to visit for yourself.

While Donal MacIntyre is inviting, he is a bit on the vulgar himself. He reminds me of Heraldo Rivera with the over-done dramatics. He also resembles the eminent crocodile hunter with his exaggerated fear-factor attempts to survive nature. But in reality, for the educated and observant, he has to have a back-up crew filming his “death defying antics.” As one native assured him while in a canoe, “No worries, mate.” Aside from too considerable heavy breathing, and sudden gestures at things unseen, the narrator is gargantuan to provide the accounts of these four communities on the “EDGE OF EXISTENCE.”

MacIntyre apparently appreciates cockroaches about as well as Indiana Jones likes snakes. That and other instances, provide some humor to the difficult ways of living that Donal encounters while visiting the out-of-the method minute bands of civilization. One general factor that carries through each of the four harsh living locations is the family devotion, hospitality, and sense of community. That’s similar to what is often found in USA locations immediately after a natural pain.

Episode #1, “Oman”, deals with a family that live in the desert, subsist on dates, coffee, and the occasional goat. They also raise racing camels. Donal tries it all, to more or less success.

….Episode #2, “Papua Novel Guinea”, visits a frail cannibal group known as the “Insect Tribe” in the rainforest who live on the river, fish, and hunt wild boar and crocodiles. Again MacIntyre tackles the map of the natives.

….Episode #3, “Bolivia”, is high, on a salt flat, frosty, and short on oxygen for Donal to test himself with this people group. He also gets fervent in a bit of violence in a religious event. Sadly, a tribe member returned from college and has introduced “steam”, their term for moonshine. Will it bring their doom?

….Episode #4, “Borneo”, the hero “reality indicate star” joins up with sea gypsies, people who have no country, who literally live in a boat, who gain land-sick when NOT on the sea, and tests his skills at free diving for food. Truly an amazingly difficult arrangement for families to live.

Extras include SDH SUBTITLES (useful) ; a booklet of facts, maps, contents, and survey questions; and a bit more.

Very educational as well as sharp. It’s like a reality display for the intellectual–and about time. It’s not my first Athena documentary DVD and certainly will not be my last.
