1. The Snow Fort: Pablo and Tyrone are brave and fearless Mounties, defending their snow fort and the treasure within. Tasha and Uniqua are Ski Patrollers with a thermos full of hot chocolate, just looking for someone to rescue. Mounties on duty! Ski Patrol to the rescue! An action packed adventure set to a Country music theme.

2. The Yeti: Four funky songs and a catchy cry of “Yeti yeti yeti yeti!” as the friends hunt the elusive hairy, smelly, raisin-eating Yeti.

3. Knights Are Brave and Strong: Uniqua the Pink battles the Moose of the Mist and the Guardian of the Gate to deliver an important message from Queen Tasha to King Austin. Big band swing and four new songs.

4. Secret Mission: Saving the best for last, secret agents Pablo, Tyrone and Uniqua negotiate the booby traps in a treasure museum to the beat of the tango and limbo.

Four more examples of why the Backyardigans belong in any kid’s collection.

Amanda Richards, January 15, 2006

Nickelodeon’s new smash hit the Backyardigans seems to appeal to all ages, from 2-year-olds to 11-year-olds, and even to adults. The colorful animation, catchy songs, and exciting adventures, make up one of the best animated shows currently on television. These 5 “kids” venture out into the backyard, only to end up on some incredible adventure, but they always manage to be back in the house for snacktime.

You get 4 backyard adventures on this DVD, and the first two, are snow themed. They managed to conveniently release the first 2 Backyardigans DVD’s of this show around Halloween and Christmas, but without having any one show set in the Halloween or Xmas theme. That’s fine, as they will get some serious play, long after the holidays are over.

The colorful characters look great against the snow backgrounds and just on visuals alone, should keep any kid glued to the set. Never mind the catchy tunes, including the Yeti stomp, which is my kids’ favorite. There is only one thing on this DVD that might upset someone, and that is if your kid is an Austin fan. He seems to be MIA for 3 out of the 4 episodes. You are much better getting the first DVD of the Backyardigans if your child’s favorite is Austin, as they won’t see much of him here.

Overall, a must have for the Backyardigans fan. If your child has never seen them, they will surely be hooked after one episode. If you are looking for the best DVD Xmas gift to get someone, this is it!

This boxed set comes with the first thirteen episodes of the series and the movie. In the episodes, we start out differently from the original story in the manga, but it does tend to run parallel with it. The movie is a whole different story, almost literally. With stunning visuals and beautiful animation, The Adolesence of Utena offers a different approach to the whole story itself. The characters have obviously grown in different ways, but haven’t changed completely. To some, the movie seems “weird”, “stupid” and “unnecessary”, but the very basic of ideas is to follow the symbolism, just as in the series. The movie explains some of the things that may have not been so clear in the series, and adds more to it in its own way (or continues an idea, such as Nanami!Cow). I’ve seen some personal reviews with their own ideas and explanations of the meaning of all the symbolism, and most of them thankfully add just that much more to the story.

On a personal note, I love the music throughout the series, but absolutely adore the movie soundtrack. I thoroughly recommend the manga, episodes, movie, and sountracks.

To add any and/or all of these to your current collection(s) is a very good idea, to those who aren’t opposed to a few new (and open-minded) ideas…

I think that the beginning of the series, included here, is the most widely liked portion of this anime. Later on the series becomes darker and (it is possible) stranger, and less appropriate for younger audiences.

I also loved the movie, but understand that those people who haven’t seen the series seldom understand or like the movie. The reason is that here the movie is essentially the entire series metaphorically presented in less than two hours. If you don’t know what’s going on, you’re not going to get it from the movie. That said I thought it was a fantastic (graphically and otherwise) way to present the story. It doesn’t add to the storyline, nor does it try to do a full arc of the series in coherent movie format, it just presents it differently. (I also loved the car-thing, what a great way for her to rescue Anthy!)

This DVD production of the story of Moses has accomplished exactly what I had hoped for my 3yr old son: an interest in learning about the Lord and His involvement in the lives of those who trust Him. My son often recites (in surprising detail) various scenes from the tale. One of my fellow brothers in Christ calls my son “The Little Preacher” because my son enjoys capturing the attention of those around him so he can retell the story of Moses. I understand some reviewing this telling of the story may prefer stricter adherence to various nuances and literary exactness from Scripture - I can appreciate that as I am a literal believer of Scripture. There is never a perfect retelling of any Biblical story that will appeal to everyone’s preference. As already mentioned, this achieved what I had hoped for my son: help him develop an interest in learning about the Lord and begin building a faith in the Lord.

For such an awesome Bible story, the animation for the crossing of the Red Sea was pretty lame. We know from history that there were at least a million people that crossed this massive body of water, and in the animation you can count maybe 25 people, crossing waist-high water. Other than that, the songs are annoying but the storyline is fairly accurate. The Red Sea crossing, which should have been the climax, was a major disappointment.

I bought this for my grandson, who is 7 and he loved it.The 3 year old loves it as well.It is very educational and fun for the whole family. It is interactive with questions asked throughout with games. The photography is stunning.I plan on getting others in this series right away. The adults enjoy it as well

I ordered this DVD for my 7 year old son. Also because I am the Bible School Director for my church and we are doing a “Rainforest Adventure” theme. This DVD is so well done . . . we have watched it several times. The colors, music and scenes are amazing . . we literally stop in our tracks and watch it. I can’t wait to show it to the kids at VBS. Well done. My son especially likes the question and answer part of the DVD. Great music, great info. All around a good DVD for the price.

[This is a review of the DVD version] If you love old bad SF movies but haven’t ever seen them given the Mystery Science Theater treatment, you owe it to yourself to pick up this DVD! Mike Nelson and his robot pals Crow and Tom Servo watch this relentlessly silly turkey of a movie (a scientist saves the severed head of his girlfriend and puts her in a pan, where she pleads with him to let her die. How sloppily-put-together is this film? The filmmakers apparently forgot their own title and call it “The Head That Wouldn’t Die” in the end credits.)–and throughout the entire film, Tom and the `bots mercilessly riff on the film with funny comments and jokes that’ll have you rolling in your seats. Long a staple of Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel, this is one of the first DVDs of this classic comedy series (many others are available on VHS). In addition to the pristine and clear picture you get with DVD, Rhino has also included the full *original* version of “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” on the flip-side of the disc so you can see it without Mike and the `bots (to riff on your own, perhaps?). The DVD menus are innovative and worth checking out just for the clever swish-pan of the bridge of the Satellite of Love (Crow, Servo, and Gypsy flash past us). If I had any quibble at all it’s a minor one… why is the DVD chapter that begins the film entitled “It’s Movie Time!” when every MSTie knows it should be “We’ve got Movie Sign!”? But I’ll put up with minor problems like that as long as Rhino continues to give us these great reissues of classic MST3K episodes. Now if they’d only release “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” and “Outlaw”… (Also recommended in this series: the DVD version of “Mystery Science Theater 3000: Eegah.”)

I first saw this movie when I was in the 4th grade or thereabouts, and it scared the living bejesus out of me.

But what do you know when you’re in the 4th grade?

Now that MST3K has reissued this movie and I’ve watched it perhaps 10 times, I laugh all the way through it. The dialogue is awful. The basic plot recalls countless puns about folks who lose their heads and flash-in-the-pan actresses. Mad Scientist Bill Courtner’s girlfriend has lost hers in a fiery car crash (”Honey roasted,” comments one of Mike’s companions). Obsessed scientist that he is, he keeps her head alive in a lasagna pan full of “adreno-serum” in the basement laboratory of his country place. She says, “Let me die!” enough times that you’re ready to oblige her, then strikes up a liaison, sort of, with the thing that lives in Bill’s closet–the product of an earlier experiment that went awry. (When Bill looks in the closet, you’re dying to hear, “Omygawd, it’s Rosanne!” but Mike’s pals missed that one.) The scene in the seedy strip club sends me into hysterics. Best line here, robot Crow observing one of the girls: “I must have blood before the night is done!”

There are some godawful blunders. For example, the scene in which Bill enters the country place with a new girlfriend follows very closely after his assistant Curt’s having stumbled around the same room bleeding profusedly from … shall we say, a farewell-to-arms type encounter with the thing in the closet. So where’s all the blood?

The ending is a bit gory (though tame by today’s standards). The thing in the closet certainly wins the ugly award for that year. But when he/it turns away toward the stairwell after making mayhem starting a fire in the lab and taking a bite out of poor Bill’s throat, we see another ghastly flaw: you can actually see where the mask is tied on at the back of the actor’s head! Now THAT’s funny!

Not to mention how Bill’s old girlfriend, still in her pan at the end, manages to laugh without the benefit of chest, diaphragm or lungs. (I forgot, she has neck juice.)

Incidentally, in my version the end credits also screw up the title, calling it The HEAD That Wouldn’t Die.

Mike and his robots’ running commentary, though, offers nonstop comedy you can enjoy over and over again. I haven’t been panning this movie. (Sorry!) Four stars for amusement value.
