Just remember what you’re buying3
I purchased 4 of the RC80i for surround sound in my living room, lefts and rights for both front and back speakers. My rationale in purchasing in-ceiling speakers was the desire not to have a room filled with visible speakers. The mounting was very easy. Just cut the holes via the template and slide them in. The grilles fit snug and I’m sure will be a challenge if I ever have to remove them. The directional tweeter design is great and a must with in-ceiling speakers. Unfortunately, I was hoping for a little better fidelity. The speakers lack the high frequencies. They’re good when listening to movies but you can hear the difference when listening to music. I set my expectations too high and have to remind myself of the price.

Fantastic speakers5
These speakers are great. Installation was much easier because the large, 8″ opening you cut into the wall/ceiling makes it much easier to fish speaker wire. The mounting brackets securely fasten to the wall so there is no shaking or rattling. The tweeter can easily pivot to aim at your listening position. These are voice matched to the Polk “Monitor” series speakers, so match with any other RC series in-wall speaker, CS1 or CS2 center channel speaker, and PSW10 or PSW12 subwoofer.

My only 2 complaints, which were not enough to drop the rating, are:
1) The speaker cutout template turned out to be a tad small, and I had to go around with a keyhole saw again to make it 1/8″ larger to fit the speaker all the way. That made it a little messier, but it ended up fine.
2) The speaker grill is pretty hard to remove, but you only have to do that once, and you want it to fit snugly anyways.

Fantastic speakers; easy installation5
I installed a pair of these in the kitchen, after which my wife and I both had one of those mouth-open, “wow” experiences. They flood the room with deep, rich sound: crips highs and full, round lows. You can angle the tweeters to “aim” them better, but I didn’t want one particular sweet spot in the kitchen, so I left them pointing directly downwards. Awesome.

The installation is quite easy as well. I found that with a carefully cut hole I had no problems at all with speaker insertion. As with the other reviews, I had a devil of a time getting the speaker grilles off, and was afraid I might pull out one of the tiny holes with the paperclip. Polk would do better to package these with the grilles off so that the installer can skip that step. However, I found that putting them back on was easy - you just have to make sure you put them back on with an even insertion on all edges and then work your way around little by little…you can’t fully insert them on one end and make the rest fit, they are that tight.

Bottom line: I love these and highly recommend them.

Best mouse yet5
This is easily the best Logitech mouse yet. I own both the G5 and G9, and settled on the G5 as my primary mouse some time ago after hating the grip of the G9 (neither one felt natural to me). This was a problem, since I felt the G9 performed better but it just wasn’t comfortable. As a result, I’m going to compare the G500 to the G5.

On the ergonomic side the G500 has had the ridge on the upper-right whittled down, making the mouse far more comfortable–especially if you hold your middle finger on the right mouse button (instead of the ring finger as some people do). This gives your ring finger a much more natural place to rest. The palm rest also feels a bit wider and raised, making the palm grip even better than the G5. Thumb button placement is fine, though I preferred the larger G5 buttons. Sensitivity toggles have moved to the upper left, making changes easier while using the index finger. Logitech has also blessed us with a mouse wheel toggle (free spin/click) that is on the top of the mouse instead of the bottom as they did on the G9. This is a huge plus for me, as I run it in free mode while browsing and click mode when gaming and I tend to alternate between the two regularly.

Performance-wise, it’s technically better than the G9 and noticeably superior to the G5. The Setpoint software that is used with the G500 is also different from that of the G5, allowing for more control over the mouse. For those curious about performance in specific gaming genres I can’t comment–I play almost every game genre and feel this mouse excels at them all. I’m also using it on a RAZER Goliathus Control mouse pad which is nice and smooth without feeling like there’s zero friction as I tend to like some drag on my mouse.

One other note: The G5 weight cage will not work in the G500. The cage in the G500 has been altered a bit; two weight slots have been removed and the alignment track is gone. The G500 uses the same weights as the G5, however (1.7g and 4.5g).

I’d recommend this mouse to any G5 owner without hesitation. If you’re a claw-grip user you could still use it, but the G9x is probably a better choice for that style of usage.

A keeper5
For my medium-small-sized hands this mouse fits like a glove - the shape and base-weight makes it really comfortable. I tend to mouse with my wrist stationary, using only fingers to move around. This requires a slightly shorter grip around the mouse. Even so, left and right buttons are clickable almost as far back as half the mouse with little perceivable click-pressure change.

Having basically 10 completely programmable buttons is a godsend for click-casting in World of Warcraft. Paired with the SetPoint software, it’s a no-brainer. Although I’d agree with ‘Ruebarb’ about the both the DPI & middle buttons.

DPI buttons are small and might be hard to reach for small hands in a gaming situation. And the middle button requires far more directly straight-down, forceful click than the left/right scroll-click, making it better suited for less-used spells/functions.

Conversely, the left/right scroll-click is dead-on perfect. I find them as natural to use as any other “normal” mouse-button.

The cluster of three buttons on the left side is a great idea. I like the arrangement. And the toggle-able hyper-scroll middle button makes for quick work of long page-scrolling.

To wish for anything it’d be more ergonomic alternative buttons for DPI & left-side - something that makes for more hand-position variety in a “twitch” gaming situation. I’d prefer button-shaping akin to Microsoft’s Intellimouse Optical side buttons - lending toward slightly larger/elongated and rounder.

That said, the detractors are minor - this is possibly the best mouse I’ve used for gaming.

Great Gaming Mouse4
I previously used a G7, and loved the mouse. Now the G500 is amazing to me, the ability to program all of the button with macros is awesome for gaming. The scroll wheel pushes left or right, which are the best buttons I found for gaming, along with the lower DPI and back buttons, all right there under your fingers. The shape is very comfortable, the textured side is great. The hyper scrolling is great, nice feature for the web, easy to turn on and off with the location of the button.

The cons: Well if you push in the scroll button as a command button for gaming, the mouse rarely gets it correct, it seems to think I pushed it left or right. Since I can’t keep guessing if the mouse will perform the correct command in gaming, I’m not able to use the button, which I’m a bit disappointed about, which gives this 5 star mouse a 4. Maybe something a driver update will fix.

This mouse is large and I have small hands, so when gaming I can not reach the Up DPI, forward, or “macro” buttons without having to move my entire hand position on the mouse, so for me making them not useful for gaming. I’m sure others users may not have this problem.

Customer Reviews:

Best for when you need two VOIP lines4
Are you ready to jump into the exciting world of VOIP? Freedom and cost savings are there to be had, but be aware that this market is still in a developing stage, and if you are not a techie, you are strongly advised to not buy a product like this and simply sign up with a VOIP provider who will include the equipment as part of the package. This will insure you have the best support in case anything goes wrong.

If you’re still reading, you should be nevertheless aware that the configuration screens for these type of devices are obscure and take a bit of a learning curve. There is a full manual in searchable PDF which you will likely need to refer to, but when you do, it is very good.

Now, after all that, if you need a dual line or dual channel VOIP ATA (analog telephone adapter), let me heartily state that this is your product. I own one and love it, and have read many reports from other satisfied users. What is a channel? Well in the wonderful world of VOIP, a channel is an active call. Many providers, when you pay for an incoming phone number (aka DID, or Direct Inward Dialing number), give you two or more channels. What does this mean? If you have two phones hooked up to this unit, but are only paying for one DID, if you are on one line, the other will automatically ring if someone calls you. Conversely, if someone is actively calling on one channel, you can pick up the line on the other channel and make a call. I have not yet personally tried this but I have been assured that such things are possible.

Your VOIP provider should be able to help you get it configured correctly. Linksys (they bought out Sipura, who is the de-facto standard for VOIP ATA’s) is very well supported by most VOIP providers.

Note: if you only need one VOIP line and channel, I would recommend the Linksys 2102 or 3102 instead. The 2102 includes a router (should automatically handle port-forwarding issues). The 3102 has a POTS (plain old telephone system) port (so you can call into the unit and call other countries cheaply from your cell phone, although Google Voice is just as good for this) and also allows you to register to more than one VOIP gateway at a time, allowing you to configure your dial plan for the cheapest provider to whatever countries you call to most.

Pretty good device - ignore the 1 star reviews4
You need to know what you’re doing to really get the most out of this device, but really, this device works fine. I own several of them and use them for my business and home.

To get it to work, you need to sign up for a SIP account with a VOIP provider, like Voip.ms, Voicepulse, Vitelity, or Callcentric.

I suggest updating the firmware as soon as you receive it, as there are frequent useful firmware updates.

To respond to some of the one star reviews:

Of course the device doesn’t work with Vonage, it’s not supposed to! Vonage doesn’t use SIP!

Of course the device died when you plugged the wrong power adapter into it - it fried the circuit board. You could make that same comment about hundreds of devices.

UPDATE: While I still think this device is good, I now recommend purchasing a Linksys SPA-2102 instead, due to a new firmware update from Linksys. It’s worth the extra $[…] or $[…] bucks for the ability to tweak DTMF detection.

It works!5
The adapter needs to be connected to a VoIP phone service and high speed internet in order to work. I have the phone service through my home based business and it works fine. What’s great about the adapter is that it’s portable. I can take it anywhere in the world and plug it into a a high speed internet router or modem, plug my phone into it, and it will ring when someone calls my home number. What’s even better is that I don’t pay an arm and a leg for the service. This adapter is indeed the wave of the future.

Customer Reviews:

Amazing is all I can say5
When I got this Cooler, (Being in the big box that it is) I was very ecstatic knowing that it will solve my cooling problems. Now to be honest, this wasn’t the ONLY product I bought to reach my goal. I paired this with a Cooler Master CM690 case that includes a front fan and a back fan (+ 2 fans for the top) for max airflow.

My situation was that I had a Micro-ATX case with a Quad Core, an 8800 GT (The hot hot GPU), two HDD’s and a tv tuner smacked right close to the Graphics Card. You can imagine what kind of MESS it made. My temps were 63C on 8800 GT and 50C on the Quad Core, Which is a Phenom 9500. Ambient temperatures were near the 50’s and all of it - ON IDLE! My comp shuts off without notice when playing games that use both the CPU and the GPU semi intensive to Intensive.

Now on to the Cooler; this cooler is HUGE. Not too heavy, but it’s definitely big. The cooler that I had (Stock), could fit 6 times in this baby. It’s only an inch away from the side panel, where I was planning to attach another fan but the performance of this cooler really brings no need for this.

I will say that it’s a bit tricky to install. For you AMD users, you’ll have to remove the existing retention bracket and install the one that comes with it, and also a supporter at the back of the motherboard. One thing’s for sure - READ THE MANUAL. One thing they don’t tell you is that you have to flip the Motherboard upside down while the cooler is in place to fasten the back supporter. Definitely tricky to install. I took an example from 3D GAME MAN on his youtube. Definitely helps if you need visual explanation. To top it off they added a nice red LED light inside.

The Results;

Previous Setup w/o V8
CPU IDLE 52 C
CPU LOAD 65 C
GPU IDLE 60 C
GPU LOAD 75 C

New Setup With V8
CPU IDLE 32 C
CPU LOAD 40 C
GPU IDLE 55 C
GPU LOAD 63 C

Conclusion; So this is on a fairly decent setup. My Phenom is OC’d to 2.6 Ghz and the temp budges a few degrees but not much. This type of cooler doesn’t quite live up to its potential on this type of CPU, but I can assure you that dropping your CPU temperature by 20 Degrees does wonders in the overall ambient temperatures. WONDERS I say! This is because there’s a point where the 8800 GT’s fan starts to make a lot of noise. This is when it exceeds 65C. If you manage to keep it below this temperature, it won’t make a noise. This is another bonus when dropping the ambient temperature and i’m glad I waited till Amazon got this baby back in stock, it was worth the wait!

Cool styling & even cooler temps5
Bought this CPU cooler for a new build. It’s sitting atop an Intel Core i7 920. With the CPU under load, core temps only reach into the low 40 celsius range. Cooler Master includes everything you need to bolt this guy on, whether you are Socket 775 or 1366.

Good product, poor instructions4
Pros: Well built, good mounting Hardware, included two thermo compounds. Works nicely, keeps i7 very cool with little noise. Fits in my Antec Mini p180 case with almost an inch to spare.

Cons: Bad instructions, Showed air flow to be opposite of what it really was (so I had choice of removing heatsink, or taking out fan and reversing it, cost me an hour, I recommend you test the air flow direction before installing if you can). Some of the screws go in clock wise, some counter clock wise, Instructions don’t show this well, and threads go messed up trying to screw them in the normal way.

Customer Reviews:

Great radios, BUT3
The radios by themselves are good, but be careful to read the fine print. The first time I went to use the radios one of them didn’t have a full charge on it. No problem, I just used AA batteries. Then we realized we could barely hear each other through the headphones even with the radios turned to max volume. I thought it might be the headphones, but they were very loud when plugged into a friend’s radio made by a different company. Midland blamed it on the headphones anyway, but they were not covered under the warranty. So I didn’t use the radios again for a few months until we went on another trip and I made sure to place the radio on the charger a day early this time so it would have ample time to charge. Same problem one radio didn’t take but half a charge. I contacted Midland on Friday explaining my situation, they got back to me on Wednesday to say there was probably an issue with the battery pack (No duh). I emailed back around 10:30 am and said I figured that much, but how do I correct it. They got back to me on Thursday night saying I needed to buy another battery pack because they are not covered under the warranty either. So what is covered? Turns out not much, not the headphones, not the battery packs, not the charger, not the adapter and not even the antennas. In short if all you need is just the radios and there isn’t a problem with them, the radios are OK, but heaven help you if there is a problem with them. It will take forever for someone to tell you that’s not covered under the warranty. That large 3 year warranty logo needs to include an even larger asterisk. Radios get 5 stars, everything else including the warranty and service gets 1 star for an average of 3 stars. If I need to buy all new accessories to replace all these defective ones I just bought, maybe I should consider a different brand radio.

Even Better Than I Expected!5
In the past I have taken walkie talkies to the State Fair and they were unusable because of all the chattering going on. I brought the Midland GXT1000VP4 radios to the fair and randomly selected a channel and privacy setting. They worked perfectly. Not one other person broadcasted on the same channel (200,000 people in attendance). We could hear each other crystal clear. You either get a crystal clear signal or no signal at all with these radios; there is never any static. They lasted the whole day on one charge and the battery indicator still read full.
The only complaint that I have is when putting them on the charger, it takes a bit of menuvering to get the charge light to go on…and I have had it go off after about 15 minutes before. In that case I reseated the one radio again and the light stayed on for the whole charging period.

Radio5
i bought this radio to talk to my family when we are out in the wood. The fact it says it works upto 36 miles, that is only if you are in Desert with no blocking mountain or building. however, in the city this radio worked upto 3 miles.
I love the fact that you can use Alkaline batteries or rechargeable. You never need to buy battery. It comes with rechargeable stand which can even charge your AA recahargable batterries beside its own included battery. It has alot of futures. CyberPower CP850AVRLCD Intelligent LCD Green UPS - 850VA/510W AVR 9-Outlet RJ11/45/Coax Description:

The Intelligent LCD Series CP850AVRLCD UPS, designed for mid- to high-end computer systems, features dynamic line conditioning and an Intelligent LCD diagnostic display. Real-time system vitals can be viewed using this Crystal-Blue display. The unit can be conveniently placed in a workstation cabinet, or directly on a desktop. The CP850AVRLCD guards against surges/spikes, and offers battery backup in the event of brownouts, or total power loss. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) ensures that all your electronics are receiving clean power and maintains a safe voltage level. PowerPanel PE ¿ Management Software automatically saves and closes open files and then shuts down the computer system in an intelligent and orderly manner. The Intelligent LCD Series is also equipped with full dataline protection: RJ11/RJ45 (phone, fax, Ethernet, network, DSL) and RG-6 coax (DSS, cable modem, satellite, cable TV). ¿Surge-Only¿ outlets are perfect for the addition of peripherals such as monitors, printers, scanners, iPods, or CD/DVD players. The GreenPower UPS¿ technology used in this UPS unit significantly reduces energy-usage and cooling costs associated with UPS power protection. In fact, the GreenPower UPS¿ advanced circuitry bypass reduces energy use by up to 75% compared to a traditional UPS design. As a result, you can expect to save between $50-to-$150 annually (varies based on model, and regional kilowatt per hour costs) by using GreenPower UPS¿ technology.

Customer Reviews:

Useful Light-Duty UPS with Some Obvious Design Oversights4
My home and home office contain many sensitive electronic devices. We have several personal computers, a PC server, NAS drives, routers, switches, printers, cordless phones, security system, etc. All of these things (and more) plug into the AC mains and are therefore vulnerable to voltage sags or spikes and the occasional power outage. When a person invests a lot of money in electronic hardware, it only makes sense to do everything you can to protect it. That is why I always discourage people from plugging these sensitive devices directly into the wall. I currently have a total of 10 UPS systems and two line conditioners in my home, which protect my most valuable computer, security and A/V equipment.

Over the years the cost of power conditioners and Uninterrupted Power Supplies has dropped drastically, and yet the overall reliability and performance of these have improved a great deal. A typical UPS used to be thought of as a simple battery backup device. But today the majority of UPS systems also help to condition the power, to a degree, using technologies such as AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation). There are several different types of UPS systems available, offering a wide range of output capacities and power conditioning capabilities. Of course the price goes up as your need of greater output and more sensitive voltage protection increases. But for some devices you can get by with a modest UPS system, to simply provide a moderate amount of power protection and battery backup time. This “modest” category is where the CyberPower CP850AVRLCD UPS fits in.

Model numbers of these UPS systems can be a little confusing, as many people think that the model reflects the output level of the device in watts. The model number of most UPS systems actually reflects the volt-amp rating, whereas the continuous watt load the unit can handle is usually a fraction of that VA rating, in terms of AC output. Calculating the exact watt output the UPS can sustain, strictly based on the VA rating, can be a little tricky since the AC load is not usually in precise phase. However, if you look up the specs of a given UPS system, the manufacturer usually indicates the maximum watts that the device is meant to sustain. In the case of the CyberPower CP850AVRLCD, the VA rating is 850 but the watt output rating is 510. That is a 60% difference between the VA and Watt rating.

This CyberPower UPS provides Automatic Voltage Regulation, shown by the letters “AVR” in the model number. This means that the UPS is capable of decreasing (Buck) or increasing (Boost) output voltage, slightly, in order to “clean” the power it is passing through to your electronic equipment. This is, or course, while the UPS is receiving AC power through your mains. If the voltage exceeds the minimum or maximum voltage tolerance, the system will automatically switch over to battery power, in order to protect your electronic equipment. The included PowerPanel Personal Edition software allows you a modest adjustment to these minimum and maximum voltage tolerance levels. The software also clearly displays the current status of the UPS, including voltage supplied, voltage condition, remaining battery capacity, battery status, remaining battery runtime and the current battery backed up load on the system. PowerPanel Personal Edition allows you to adjust the amount of time that your computer will remain running on battery power before shutting down. Of course you can choose to set the UPS to allow your computer to run as long as possible, but the UPS will still shut down your computer when it is down to only 5 minutes of remaining time. Therefore you will need to consider how much of a load your current equipment will put on the UPS, as too much load could cause the UPS to shutdown your computer almost immediately after an AC power failure. There is also a configuration screen for alert sounds, which allows you to enable or disable the beeping sounds this UPS would normally make during power events. There is not much more you can do with this software, which really limits its overall usefulness.

The majority of my UPS systems are made by APC. However, I wanted to try a CyberPower unit, so I purchased this smallish 510 Watt unit to provide conditioning and battery backup for a DSL modem, an Ethernet Router, a wireless access point, and a 16-port Gigabit switch. The total load of this attached hardware is only about 45 to 50 watts, at full working load. Therefore this UPS should provide battery backup long enough for me to do some moderate Internet browsing from another UPS powered PC or wirelessly from a laptop. Setup of the CyberPower UPS was completely effortless. You don’t even have to hook up cables to the internal battery, which is something that all APC units require. Upon powering up the CyberPower UPS I was greeted with a nice blue LCD display, which can be toggled to show current load level, estimated run time, input voltage, output voltage, output frequency, battery capacity, and the current status of the UPS (normal AC, battery in use, AVR in use, if system overload is detected, if audible sound is enabled or disabled, or if there is a household wire fault). I think this LCD status display is very useful. However, CyberPower has decided that the consumer does not need the LCD to remain lit, for real-time monitoring. Therefore you will find that the LCD will shut itself off after about 20 seconds, unless you push the toggle button, which lights it back up again as you switch between status screens. I find this extremely annoying, as I like to be able to monitor input voltage and current power load by just glancing at the display. All of my APC UPS systems, with LCD displays, allow me to set the backlight to remain lit at all times. I just don’t understand why CyberPower would not provide this ability. I don’t like it when a manufacturer makes a decision for me that I don’t need something, even though I specifically paid for a UPS with an LCD display. Since I paid for it, I want to see it. I don’t want to have to crawl under the desk to push the doggone toggle button, just to activate the backlight so I can see the display. The engineer that designed this shortcoming should be fired!

Overall I am quite pleased with the CyberPower CP850AVRLCD UPS. It offers a reasonable amount of useful features, has plenty of backed-up (5) and surge-only (4) outlets, includes Automatic Voltage Regulation, and has a compact footprint. The battery runtime is rather low, especially when used for a mid-level or high-end PC and monitor. But for my low wattage needs, this UPS should keep my DSL modem, router, wireless access point and Ethernet switch up and running for quite some time. The LCD display shows, under the average 45 watt load I have, it will run for approximately 94 minutes. I almost expect that it will likely last even longer than that. My biggest complaints with this UPS are the weak software that CyberPower provides, as well as the unchangeable sleep mode that the LCD display goes into. CyberPower has really dumbed down this otherwise impressive UPS device. The product itself is a worthy, full-featured UPS system, but CyberPower has restricted user configuration to the point that it just can’t compete with other big players in the market, like APC. For a very basic computer user, this UPS could be a good, low cost solution. But for advanced users, who demand more control of their UPS settings and features, the CyberPower CP850AVRLCD simply falls short. I think the folks at CyberPower should consider updating their PowerPanel Personal Edition software, to allow more control of voltage tolerances, automatic computer shut down, LCD backlight mode (choices for sleep mode and always on), and the ability to setup a computer hibernation rather than simply shutting down the computer. Maybe some of their higher end (more expensive) UPS systems allow for these settings, but I definitely feel that they should consider adding these abilities to models like the CP850AVRLCD as well. I could easily give this UPS 5 stars if the software was more useful and the LCD display were user controllable, but as it stands now I can only give it 4 stars at best. Everything else about this UPS is solid and well designed, so I recommend it for basic computer users that do not require power user features and configurability.

Excellent in (almost) every way4
I just returned a Belkin F6C550-AVR and got this CP850AVRLCD instead. It’s *much* better than the Belkin in every way but one: The Belkin can tell the computer to Hibernate in case of outage, while the CyberPower can only tell it to Shutdown. Guess what, if you’re not at your desk or are asleep when a 10-15 minute outage happens, you still lose any unsaved changes. Might as well have a garden variety surge protector. If you leave your machine running, and you live where sustained outages are a problem, then this unit might not be for you (unless CyberPower decides to update the software, hint hint.)

But the good things are:
1) Nice form factor
2) When charged and nothing is plugged into it, it only draws 7 watts.
3) Software is intuitive and easy to use. Gives you all the useful status info you need
4) LCD panel is very nice. Also gives you the status info you need.
5) AVR - seems to be a true line-interactive regulated supply

So anyone from CyberPower, if you’re reading this, please submit this feature request to enable hibernation in the PowerPanel Personal software. It’s a gaping hole in the feature set of this product. (BTW, I’m running version 1.2) If this feature is added, my review changes to 5 stars. Thanks.

It works4
I ordered this UPS to replace a 6 year old BELKIN that finally gave up the ghost. The UPS sits in a room that doesn’t have stable power — I thought about not replacing the unit, but I discovered that the computer and routers started “acting up” without the protection [random reboots, hanging, etc.]. Once this unit was installed those symptoms of inadequate power disappeared.

I had been worried that the display screen on the front of the unit would be annoying — but it conveniently shuts itself off when you are not asking for information. The information displayed on the screen is helpful — especially if you want to know how much power your computer (and other attached devices) is using.

Slowest flash drive on the planet.1
Slowest flash drive on the planet.

Absolutely the slowest flash drive I have ever used, with no exception, and I have had many such drives.

This is the slowest of all of them. Does not smoke or catch on fire spontaneously, though, so it does have one positive attribute.

Buy a different drive. Check the read and write speed before paying for it.

Customer Reviews:

Good windows camera for the price4
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2YDETSE67YWC This camera is worth buying in this price range for people who generally use Windows Live products (messenger, etc) and normally do basic web cam sessions with a resolution no greater than 640 x 480. If you’d like to do full screen video using other software like Skype, you’ll want to get a higher end Microsoft camera or something like the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 (my favorite). I’ve been using the Quickcam Pro 9000 for the past year and have really liked it, however, it seems to be at least double the price of this MS camera. One downside to this Microsoft camera is that the microphone can be a bit faint and the sound can be a bit off. That said, unless you have high expectations for crystal clear web cam chats, then I can certainly recommend this camera for people mainly interested in ease of use with Windows Live Messenger and other Instant Messaging programs. It was easy to install and is extremely easy to use. I recorded this video in 320×240 resolution using the included software. Thanks and have fun shopping!

Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 - Good Webcam For The Price3

Microsoft’s LifeCam VX-5000 is a good all around webcam at a reasonable price. While some of the features are improvements, this is not the highest end model you can get and not even the top of the line in Microsoft’s line-up. You may have to do some more research and demanding users will want to step up. But for those that are looking for the best bang for their buck, this model should definitely be in the running.

Pros
+ Good Price for basic webcam
+ The flexible base is probably the best design out there for working with a variety of monitors, including laptops, flat screens and traditional monitors
+ The included software is very easy for non-techies to install and configure using simple buttons
+ Ability to zoom, pan and tilt are nice, though now standard, extras
+ Easy settings also allow for easy video effects
+ Advanced features are just a click away, allowing customized settings
+ For those who want to do IM and chat, this seems to be tightly integrated with those applications and Windows Live
+ Integrated Microphone is a nice feature and one less thing for your desk
+ Nice indicator light alerts you to when webcam is capturing
+ The options to take a snapshot, record video or record sound are nice and useful for basic multimedia stuff
+ Nice range of model accent colors: i.e. Blue, Green and Red

Cons
- Video quality perhaps not good enough for professional (work) use yet
- The video capture (listed at 30 frames per second) still seems to perform too slowly to capture fast movement (try waving your hand)
- The microphone sensitivity is average and the camera must be directed at you for it to capture sound adequately
- The highly touted low light performance and auto-adjustment works slowly and not as well as the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000
- The software installation includes too much scumware, adware and software for chatting and other things you may not want; just more stuff to remove
- The 640 X 480 video resolution does not easily scale to full screen and won’t satisfy demanding users

Comparing Against The Alternatives

Yep, despite some strong points, this guy still has a lot of cons. If you are a basic user many of those cons will be irrelevant in light of the excellent price. Most of my main points are highlighted in the pros and cons. But there are a few points that need emphasis.

The Microsoft LifeCam VX-7000 offers a *true* 2.0 megapixel sensor, while this guy only gives you 1.3 megapixels, and those are interpolated which basically means they are not based on the direct sensor but are *enhanced* from the VGA resolution that is captured by the camera. So one would expect the VX7000 to capture video better. Similarly, the Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000 captures high definition video at twice the video resolution. Either of those might be options, but each at slightly higher price tags.

If you really want a very clear picture and don’t mind spending twice as much, then the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is worth looking into. It definitely has a better auto-adjustment feature than the VX-5000 and also sports Zeiss optics for those that are into that. The Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF is another high end camera that also has some auto-focus features at a higher price tag, around $100. Do your research depending upon your needs.

While it’s not really a con, all three versions of the VX-5000 camera that I’ve seen look black. The accent color is not very noticeable. So my advice is to just get the cheapest one. They are selling at different prices and the prices fluctuate so you will definitely want to watch them carefully.

If you need an inexpensive webcam and don’t need high definition video, this unit is one of the best options. More demanding users should step up to higher end Logitech and Creative units.

Enjoy!

Life Cam vx-50004
The life cam seems to me to be a better camera especialy in lo light areas around your computer. It has shown me a clearer and brighter picture than my old HP. The one thing I was very upset about it when you down-load the CD that comes with it, it atomaticaly down-loads a bunch of un nessasy crap that slowed my computer down considerably every time I booted up my computer. I had to uninstall the whole program and go directly to Microsoft, find the correct boot-up program and reinstall the program from there. This could take you around 45minutes to a hour and I have a brand new top pf line core two duo. This became a whole lot of spam sales garbage that no one should have go through with out their concent!! I hope taging on this garbage to any little thing you buy STOPS or I would consider not buying anything else from Microsoft!Brian W.

Customer Reviews:

great gps, some flaws3
i read a bunch of reviews on different models before i ultimately chose the 1390t. when it came down to the wire it was a hard choice between the 765t and the 1390t. The main difference I would like to point out is the charger. the 765t uses a mount charger, while the 1390t uses a micro usb fed directly into the unit. some users like the fact they dont have to unhook the charger when dismounting the unit(765t). like i said personal preference. oh and also no mp3 playback, fm tuner or multipoint point destination. 765t has all those.

real world test of features
user interface: so easy a caveman can do it. garmin definitely has the other brands beat when it comes to UI. i liked the feature set for price in the tomtom 940t, but the UI just looks so primitive. They need a major rehaul of that. the 1390t always gave precise directions without causing confusion. there was no lagging either. being able to update the ETA to total distance is a huge plus. almost always gave me the local speed limit. your speed turns red if you’re speeding.

bluetooth: i was actually rather impressed with the bluetooth. it was easy to sync with my blackberry 8800(dinosaur phone i know). i had to speak a little louder than normal conversation. this is mostly because you’re talking to the unit from 1.5 feet away. if the mic was more sensitive it would pick up more background noise. call quality was good on the other end. my friend couldn’t hear the road in the background.

lane assist: i like the fact that it shows you all available lanes that you can take. it almost always did lane assist where available. junction view with photo realistic pictures never showed. i drove on the grand central, LIE, northern state, southern state, belt parkway, cross island. these are all major highways in the long island queens area. maybe it only does interstate highways. who knows. i was really disappointed when i didnt see the 3d simulation at all.

traffic alert: the ads are unobtrusive and don’t show up while you’re driving. traffic reporting was pretty accurate when it did have reception. i never tried any alternate traffic routes. the traffic map shows where the traffic begins and ends and your location.

new thinnest model of all time: don’t make this the deciding factor for you. although the unit is 25% thinner than most other garmins, it’s really not a big deal. the other garmins (200 and 700 series) were thin to begin with.

POI: for some reason when i looked for a mcdonalds or bk it would show everything but the closest location. i only used POIs 3-4 times.

random: i don’t know why other people were complaining about speaker volume. i put it on a 100% thinking that it was going have weak speakers. i assure you, def not the case. it was practically yelling at me at 100%.

cons: no fm tuner, no multipoint destinations. you can have a via point though. price is a bit high. i paid 280 including tax for the unit. i think $200 wouldve been a more reasonable price.

conclusion: if you wants all the bells and whistles go for this model or the 765t. if you just need a simple gps get a 200 series. theyre a lot cheaper. all in all great gps. 4.0/5.0. if you want a full list of features with pics check out […]. theyre affiliated with amazon, so take that for what you will.

***edit** 2 months later: 3/5 instead of 4/5 for ratings.
1)I use this device on the road every day now. I’ve driven all over queens, manhattan, and Long Island. One thing I found incredibly annoying is how it kept taking me off a highway only to remerge with it 2 exits later. It certainly was not the faster route to be following the gps’ advice in these instances.

2)Another major gripe I had was the constant recalculation. I would follow its directions and it would say recalculating. When making critical turns that are close by, this can get really annoying. I don’t know if this is a problem with my model or gpses in general or just garmin, but something needs to be fixed.

3) The suction keeps falling off the window. It may be because of the cold temperature. It recently dropped to the 40deg F. My friend uses a magellan (old non-widescreen 2-d version) on the same vehicle and her mount stays.

4)One thing I have to admit I absolutely love is lane assist. You really appreciate it when switching to different highways. It definitely is all it’s cracked out to be. However, The 3-D sign simulation(lane guidance) is just a marketing gimmick(at least I think so). Not worth paying the extra $$$. Lane assist is more practical and worthwhile.

I know this edit may have confused customers on future purchases, but READ OTHER REVIEWS to see if the problems I’ve had are common in all devices or just this one.

Great GPS! No complaints.5
Just bought this GPS from Amazon and I’m having no problems with it at all. No sure why others have a problem with the speaker but it sounds fine to me. I bought this to replace my Nuvi 350 and it’s a major upgrade. The menus are much nicer and I like the Speed Limit display. I did have a little trouble with the bluetooth. After pairing my iPhone the “Phone” icon disappeared from my GPS. It didn’t seem to recognize my iPhone anymore. I went to the Garmin website, downloaded the 2.70 upgraded software for this unit (which has fixes for the speaker and bluetooth), did the pairing again, and now it works fine. I would definitely recommend this unit. Anyone who’s having problems should download the latest software for this GPS from the Garmin website.

Absolutely love it!5
I purchased this GPS recently. I had used an older Garmin for 2 weeks and I had liked it. I did not have time to do much research on this product but after reading a few reviews, I knew that Garmin is the manufacturer of choice for Aviation GPS(s). Once I knew that, I stpped researching and simply placed the order.

I had to drive from NY to FL a week after placing the order and Amazon replied with an order confirmation email stating that I will be receiveing the GPS device in about 1 month from the time I had placed the order. Panic moment, sepecially as I had specified and payed for 2-day express delivery of the product.

My travel plans were all in the air from the moment I received the Amazon order confirmation email. I quickly sent an email to Amazon Customer Service (at 2-3AM), to ensure they have the item in stock and that they’ll ship ASAP. Amazon Customer Service reacted within minutes and was very very efficient in taking care of things. They even excusesed themselved for the automatic email I had received, which had the wrong date. I very much appreciate the Amazon Customer Service. In the past they have heped me just as promptly as they did with this order. Amazon is very much on top of everything!!! Efficient and fast and best! :)

I was able to use the GPS successfully from my very first attempt.
The first time I used it, I drove 1000 mi in 2 days. (It is totally fool proof! or as they call it in marketing “It’s very user friendly.”)
I also helped a lost trucker find his route with my GPS and I reached destination safely myself. Not one single wrong exit, Garmin GPS gives instructions well head, with sufficient time to react to the instruction at the speed you drive at. It indicates lane change, exits, well before you have to actually do it, thus giving you sufficient time to navigate the immediately surrounding traffic and follow the instructions in a very safe manner.

I have been using the GPS for 2 months now, daily and I absolutely love it. I have used the GPS with a NEON car, which is known for it’s loud engine at high speeds. I drove the NEON at 80-90-110 mph and had the GPS volume at 80%. I could hear it loud and clear!

I have no idea what other reviewers are talking about, when they say that they cannot hear the GPS. If the person has a hearing problem and is driving a tractor, then it is possible that they could not hear the GPS voice feature, indeed. But I one could hear it very LOUD AND CLEAR. In the city I am using it at only 50% volume, with music on and it’s still very loud.

I like the size. The screen is large enough, yet not too heavy to have in the purse. You can charge it once every 2 days without always needing to have the charging cable with you.

It has a feature that enables you to set AVOIDANCES: for example Highway if you want to drive off the highway at all times.

It includes a calculator, a currency convertor, world clock, etc.

It allows you to zoom in / out and re-center the map by screen-touch, just like you can grab the google maps and move it along the computer screen. You can use your finger and move the map across the screen of the GPS.

It has an ecoRoute feature, which comes with an “eco challenge” feature that measures how smoothly you accelerate / decelerate and it rates you. The smoother you drive, the less fuel you use, and the higher the score you get is. Pretty cool, huh?! :)

After you have saved a few addresses already, it will mark them on the map with relevant icons - a dollar bill for a bank, a tumb tag for an address, a pump for a gass station, etc.

I had it out in the rain for a few moments and the equipment is very well built, nothing happened to it.

There are a few other features, which I haven’t got to use yet, but I’m sure it’s all useful and practical. I have been driving a lot recently and this GPS was money very well spent. I hope this helps! Happy shopping. :)
