Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary is an astoundingly well put together documentary of the lives of people who risk their lives just to survive in this world. As many people know, life in Central America, Mexico and many other countries is exceptionally difficult. Because of near starvation families in these countries must decide if they wish one of their younger men to make the remarkably dangerous journey to the United States in search of money to send back home.

I must admit I never knew the extent of the dangers these immigrants face. Even if they are successful, they must practically cheat death several times during their journey. Particularly in Mexico this film shows us how immigrants are not just treated like animals–indeed, they are raped, robbed of all their money and even killed if their captors just happen to feel like killing them.

Wetback proves that these immigrants, legal or not, are truly desperate to find a better way of life instead of starvation and poverty in their native lands. We learn that these people, men and women, don’t want to be in the United States any more than some Americans want them out! They know they must stay so that their family members back home must survive.

For a particularly dramatic effect the documentary Wetback films the hazardous trip of two young men from Central America on their way to the states. We hear them tell their stories when they stop at “safe houses” in Mexico and other countries on their way. These “safe houses” are run by the local Catholic Churches; but unfortunately they are so crowded that these immigrants can only stay an average of three days.

I was struck by just how hard it is for an illegal immigrant to cross the Rio Grande River from Mexico into the USA. They practically have to strip naked and swim across the river while their meager possessions float behind them in a black plastic bag. I presume that they seal off their clothing in the plastic bag to keep it dry; it didn’t look like a workable life support device.

Of course, we also get an even better understanding of the complex situation when the director films some of the people in Arizona who live near the Rio Grande River and who want to keep these immigrants out. The commentary these local townsfolk provide is fascinating although I can’t say I agreed with what they said. I commend the director for being as neutral as possible about the political situation.

There is one extra on this DVD worth watching but it is very brief. There is a brief interview with director Arturo Perez Torres; he expresses his view that this is a human situation and that as human beings we must all treat each other with more respect and dignity. I think that he simplifies the situation somewhat but he does have a good point.

In short, Wetback is an educational and fascinating close up look at the people who bravely risk their lives–everything–to live the American Dream and make their families back home have clothing and food to eat. I highly recommend this documentary for people who wish to study immigration issues.

This documentary takes a frank and at times, graphic look at the indignities that men and women have to endure in their quest for the American Dream. After this film many will think hard and deeply about how they treat their fellow man and their own stereotypes. A must see for any class that deals with immigration.

These are the cast of characters that set the stage for the 12th Zatoichi film, “Zatoichi and the Chess Expert” (”Zatoichi Jigoku tabi:” literal translation “Zatoichi’s Trip to Hell.”)

This is one of the best Zatoichi films that I have seen. The characters make for an interesting mix, each likable and formidable in their own way, but each harboring secrets that make them vipers hidden in the brush. The Chess Expert becomes Zatoichi’s ally and traveling companion, each maximizing on the talents of the other to earn money. And Zatoichi needs money, to buy medicine for the poor child who was wounded in a sword fight that the masseur was involved in. The child’s mother, beautiful and sorrowful, falls slowly in love with Zatoichi, even though she must betray him. The sister and brother are wild cards, somehow shattering the peace of the trip, as murder follows in their wake.

It all comes to an explosive finish, with companions battling companions, and secrets stripped bare. The melancholy love between Zatoichi and the beautiful woman is heart rending, though doomed. An excellent chambara flick all around, and a great Zatoichi film.

The state of blindness does not hinder the swordsman masseur, Zato Ichi, in this well-crafted tale of pre-modern Japan, as he is determined to do what is correct by assisting a young girl’s recovery from a severe wound suffered in tangential fashion during a sword-fight involving gangsters in the bandit-ridden country. Of the approximately 25 Zato Ichi films, this must rank as one of the better ones, as Shintaro Katsu who portrays the sightless samurai during the entire series, permits us to see more of the inner man behind the warrior facade, aided by an interesting story written by Kan Shimozawa, who contributes the most complex scenarios of this group of works. In early civilized Japan, all masseurs were blind, as then they could not look upon the bodies of their clients, and Zato Ichi (”Ichi the Masseur”) is following this tradition, but he is as well an inordinately successful warrior with his cane sword, mastering with cold aplomb each challenge by aggressors, no matter how many they might be. Ichi is a prototypical loner who makes his way in this work, as in all others, by massaging, while handsomely adding to his income through his cheating skills at gambling, since he is also an inveterate confidence man, yet one who makes mistakes and these errors in judgement serve in strengthening his accessibility to the viewer. There is a pleasingly intricate plot, which places Ichi as a travelling companion of an itinerant samurai named Jumonji, played well by Mikio Narita in his first cinematic role, who is the chess expert of the English language title, and the two interact with several other groups of characters in a neatly-woven narrative. The complicated scenario is capably handled by veteran director of samurai motion pictures, Kenji Misumi, who later added other outstanding Zato Ichi films to this first one in his list, as he balances the interwoven dramatics neatly and nicely. Reasons for the societal and artistic success of this series are manifest in this film, wherein Ichi represents values which most peoples are struggling to identify and capture, with the blind swordsman becoming an iconic figure as he stumbles and totters, rather than riding, into the sunset, after completing his clash with evil.

“Grey Gardens” is a one-of-a-kind documentary exploring a mother-daughter relationship. These aren’t just two anonymous people though; instead, the film chronicles Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, “Little Edie,” who just happen to be the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The filmmakers, Albert and David Maysles, initially intended the film to be about Jackie’s sister, Lee Radziwill. However, after being introduced to Edith and Little Edie by Lee, they decided to shift the focus.

What makes these two women so interesting? First, they live in a giant decaying mansion (the titular “Grey Gardens”) in luxurious East Hampton. The family was extremely wealthy at one time, until Edith divorced and lost most of her money. She apparently stayed in the 28-room Grey Gardens mansion despite a lack of money for upkeep. The women show pictures of themselves from years earlier, and they were obviously beautiful society scions. However, they became more and more isolated from society as they hunkered down into their mansion At one point, the mansion was even raided by East Hampton officials, who wanted to evict the pair due to the unsanitary living conditions. Jackie subsequently helped them clean up the mansion.

All of this action, though, occurs before the film starts in 1975 (some of the back story is presented in pictures and newspaper stories). In fact, in the documentary, not much new happens: the women continue their bizarre existence in the mansion and argue. They argue a lot. Every conversation is filled with their remembrances of better times, when Little Edie was desired by wealthy men and Edith carried on an affair with a pianist. This life is so far removed from their current surroundings, and their regrets about that disparity quickly surface. Apparently, Little Edie had been living in NYC in the 1950s, before her mother had her come back home to take care of her. This arrangement was only supposed to be for a short time, but 24 years later, they are still at Grey Gardens and arguing.

Although the movie focuses on relatives of a very famous woman, the themes of living in the past and experiencing regret are so universal. The women have in many ways a typical mother-daughter relationship, but it’s also so atypical. Quite simply, they live a rather deluded existence, arguing so passionately about past events as though it still mattered or was in the present. Neverthless, the women are fascinating on so many levels, including Edie’s fashion style. Throughout the film, Edie models numerous outfits that she’s created, all accompanied by a turban. Whether she’s bald or just loves turbans is never explored. Funnily, Edie’s bizarre style has become somewhat of an ironic fashion inspiration; the DVD even features Todd Oldham explaining that he has actually used Edie’s fashion sense while designing a number of outfits!

Some people have criticized this documentary for a variety of reason, including calling the filmmakers exploitative. I don’t think that the Beales were exploited - they are both intelligent although somewhat deluded women and likely understood the implications of participating in this filming. Others have said that the material is somewhat suspect - are the Beales “worthy” of a documentary? That’s a judgment call each viewer will need to make. I enjoyed it - the film is like nothing else I’ve ever seen. Although the Beales are deluded at times, their relationship is like a Tennessee Williams play sprung to life! I wasn’t able to turn away, and I know that these women will stick with me for a long time. Most highly recommended.

The DVD extras include original trailers and a fascinating commentary track featuring the Maysles and their associates. They fill in many of the blanks about the film. Fortunately, the DVD includes subtitles, as the women constantly talk over each other during their arguments. You needn’t miss a single word of this hypnotic documentary.

This stellar portrayal of two women, a mother and daughter, who spend their days in a run down house and are ironically aunt and cousin to Jackie O, displays documentary film-making at its very best. Although much has been said about the film, the focus always tends to emphasize the sordid living conditions that Edith Bovier Beale and her unmarried daughter, Little Edie inhabit, in an old estate in Easthampton, New York. Their house has been condemned by officials in Easthampton, and they live with cats and raccoons, but they don’t give a damn about it. They are virtual recluses in their upscale community, “full of nasty Republicans.” However, the film is not about the squalor that most of us would balk at in conventional situations. Their surroundings are only a backdrop and metaphor for the lost opportunities, and isolation that the women are subjected to as societal outcasts. Whether this is by choice, or due to their eccentricities is a mixed bag, but “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” are such magnetically charged women, it is fair to say that they are their own superstars within the world they have created.

Much of the film’s pathos is magnified by the mother and daughter relationship. Little Edie, once a gorgeous, brilliant young woman feels she has been forced to sacrifice her life and a potential career as an entertainer, to look after her mother. Big Edie, once a veritable beauty in her day, was written out of her father’s will for her aspirations to become a singer, and after her divorce retreated to her sea-side estate to spend the rest of her days. It is apparent that both women are extremely co-dependent, but in spite of their inherent needs to look after each other, Little Edie is full of resentment over the arrangement. She points this out again and again, letting us know that when she is with her mother, she doesn’t feel like a woman, but rather a little girl. However, both have clearly been dominated by strict, critical male figures in their pasts, and they do enjoy a sense of freedom and independence in their solitude, even if it comes at the expense of their abilitiy to inhabit the outside world. Little Edie insists throughout the film, that she must get out and move to New York, “My days at Grey Gardens are limited” she tells the Maysles’ camera crew, who record every nuance with objectivity, and a keen eye for descriptive detail of both women and their amazing story.

This is a complex narrative, and it unfolds with intelligent, and often hilarious dialogue from both Big and Little Edie. Little Edie’s sense of fashion is truly “revolutionary” and has been copied and imitated by several designers. Big Edie is more staid, she has “had her cake, eaten it, chewed it, masticated it” while Little Edie emerges as a thwarted Goddess, who feels she never even got a bite of the cake, so to speak. She proclaims herself to be the “greatest dancer in the world” yet alone in the house with her mother, their is no other audience for her to creatively conquer. We watch her, and we are captivated by her, and we accept what she tells us, because she is so emotive and honest.

Fiction could never fully capture the beauty and the sadness that this film evokes. Although we love to laugh with it, it is also a poignant epic, magnifying moments in Big Edie and Little Edie’s lives with uncanny depth and awareness of the subjects. It is simultaneoulsy lyrical, funny and sad. Those who view it and do not understand that this is a masterpiece, are missing the point of this work. And what is that point? I believe it circles around the choices that are made for us, the choices we do make, and the choices we don’t make, and how our fates are are affected by these events.

I give “Grey Gardens” six stars, and I hope you enjoy it. It is a film that can be viewed several times, and there is always something new to discover every time it is screened.

I love this DVD! The pictures are pristine and show both sexes, the video footage sprinkled thoughout is excellent, and the sound recordings are first rate as well. The mnemonic approach is original and “fixes” the sounds more easily in your memory. I find the female narrator’s voice very pleasant and easy to understand. A treat for anyone who wants to learn just which bird it is whose song and calls fill the air, especially in the spring. Oh, and another wonderful plus: Great entertainment for my two lovebirds! It cracked me up when my male belted out the song of the Indigo bunting in near-perfect imitation. A companion CD is also available so you can listen to bird songs anywhere (or entertain your birds).

Please note: this DVD has but one aim: to familiarize the viewer/listener with birds and their songs and calls. If you want to learn more about these birds, I recommend Stokes’ Field Guide to Birds, simply because it packs the most information on the same page of any guide that I own. For identification purposes and range, Sibley’s Guide to Birds, in my opinion, is unsurpassed. And once your interest in birds leads you to ask more questions, by all means, treat yourself to Sir David Attenborough’s marvelous The Life of Birds. I have both, the DVD set and the book, and I can only urge you to get the companion book as well since it is so wonderfully written. I found that I learned even more by reading the book after I had first watched the series on PBS. Sibley’s Guide to Bird Behavior is also highly recommended.

There is a wealth of information out there on these feathered wonders, but for sheer beauty and clarity of sound, this DVD is worth every penny!

Truly, I am enjoying “Birds! Birds! Birds!” and I am purchasing a second for the friend who patiently got me into birding back when I could just about tell that a Robin is not a Cardinal. Its photography and/or videography of each Eastern bird is impressive. More than a few of the shots are artistic and not just a ‘make-do’ illustration. The quality of the audio is fine, and the examples of calls and songs seem to be quite useful. Curiously, I am recalling more of the mnemonic devices (such as “ee-oh-lay” for the Wood Thrush) because of the narrator’s voice which is female. Though not in-depth (like the birdsong collection by Peterson’s Field Guides) this is, nevertheless, as they say, a bang for the buck. (And I saved nearly $10 buying mine from one of the other new/used sellers - located in my region.) There is no accompanying booklet; and that might be a problem for some folks. However, the DVD menu lets you go to the index. There’s also a category of “Sounds Like…” To stretch your knowledge, there are numerous quizzes. I can imagine that birders of less than expert capabilities - such as myself - might even take this along to view and hear on a laptop or on a car DVD player to be able to check on characteristics while in the field.

First is Where the Wild Things Are, a story of a boy having a dream about friendly monsters after being sent to his room for punishment. The illustrations are bold and the reading and accompanying sound and music add to the story. Next is In the Night Kitchen, which is read and sung. The tune is very catchy. One note, this is also a dream story. As the boy, Mickey, dreams he is falling his pajamas fall off. The nudity is not graphic, but you could skip that story if it bothers you. The rest of the stories are from the Nutshell books, which Carole King put to music for her project Really Rosie. These tunes are absolutely wonderful. Your children will sing along and sing them other times, too. Chicken Soup With Rice seems to be the favorite of my little library patrons. They will sing it any time they spot the book. And, these are good songs that adults enjoy as well, not cloyingly obnoxious kiddie songs that will fray your nerves. The Nutshell books are Chicken Soup With Rice, Pierre, One Was Johnny, and Alligators All Around.

This DVD is definitely on my “must have” list for my library’s DVD collection in our children’s room.

My family has had this product for about 20 yrs, since it was on VHS tape! The songs are awesome, the animation is wonderful, Carole King is awesome. We still love these songs! Your kids will enjoy it too.

I purchased this back in June and I still find myself looking at it once in a while. While I enjoyed the matches, I think the story behind the “spikes” (so to speak) is just as exciting!

Disc 1 is pretty much Hawk & Animal’s journey from two kids in Chicago that moved to Minnesota. From there, they grow up working out at a local fitness center simply known as “The Gym” to their bouncing days along side the late “Ravishing” Rick Rude, Barry Darsow (known as Demolition Smash), John Nord, Scott Norton and a few others. The future LOD also trained with these mentioned guys with Eddie Sharky, who also trained their future manager “Precious” Paul Ellering!

From there, we follow their rise from the NWA Georgia Championship Wrestling area to the AWA and their first World Tag Title. They later returned to the NWA, this time to the Mid-Atlantic area and won the NWA World Tag Team Championship. From there, they went to the WWE and won their version of the world tag titles twice! In between, there was ups and downs. Rises and falls (particularly with Road Warrior Hawk) but through it all, the off-camera friendship between Hawk & Animal survived until Hawk’s untimely passing back in 2003.

Also on Disc 1, we see early and rare NWA Georgia footage of how they just annilated their competition. We then see an early NWA World Tag Team Title match against Jack and Jerry Brisco as well as the match where they won the AWA World Titles from The Crusher & Baron Von Raschke. The rest of the extras are mainly interviews from NWA, AWA and WWE as well as as look at Animal’s “Trophy Room”, WWE Confidential special on Hawk as well as tributes from Paul Ellering and Michael Hayes (formerly of the Fabulous Freebirds).

The Road Warriors Vs. Larry “The Axe” Hennig & Curt (the late Mr. Perfect) Hennig (AWA World Tag Team Title Match) - This is pretty much a Warrior style beating here! Larry Hennig holds his own but Curt gets beat to a pulp!

The Road Warriors Vs. The Fabulous Freebirds - In a period when The Warriors were virtually unbeatable, the Freebird trio of Michael Hayes, the late Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts were one of the few teams that really put The Warriors in jeopardy!

The Road Warriors Vs. Magnum T.A./Ron Garvin - This was the finals of the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup. Garvin and Magnum put up quite an accounting for themselves against the favored Roadies!

The Road Warriors Vs. Ivan & Nikita Koloff - The Koloffs were another team that gave the Warriors some scares! This one was a double Russian Chain Match affair!

The Road Warriors Vs. The Midnight Express - This was the famous scaffold match from Starrcade ‘86! The combo of the Midnights at the time were Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton.

The Road Warriors Vs. Tully Blanchard/Arn Anderson - The future “Brainbusters” in the WWE defended the NWA World Tag Team Championship as part of The Four Horsemen in this match with The Warriors with a very controversial ending!

The Road Warriors Vs. The Midnight Express - This duo was Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane and this was that famous match in New Orleans where they just pretty much brutalized the Midnights to win the NWA World Tag Titles!

The Road Warriors Vs. Demolition - This Demolition duo was Smash and Crush by this point. While we got a taste of Warriors/Demolition, we never got to see the real confrontation that most fans wanted and that was The Road Warriors Vs. the original members of Demolition (AX/Smash). Still, this is a significant match in their careers.

The Road Warriors Vs. The Hart Foundation - A very rare match that most until this DVD set didn’t know happened back in 1991 but it did!

The Road Warriors Vs. Hulk Hogan/Genichiro Tenryu - Interesting to note that Tenryu was once the Warriors’ six man tag team championship partner in the U.S. during the late 80’s! Anyway, this match was surprisingly brutal and some bleeding does take place!

The Road Warriors Vs. The Nasty Boys - The match that put LOD into immortality as they took the WWE Tag Team Titles from the Nasties at SummerSlam ‘91!

The Road Warriors Vs. Money Inc. - This duo comprised of Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Shyster (Mike Rotunda). Surprisingly, they held their own against LOD!

The Road Warriors Vs. Sting/Lex Luger - Not really a good match but fun to see how WCW was back in those days. Certainly not the physical territory they wrestled in back in the 80’s!

The Road Warriors Vs. The Godwins - See The Roadies win their final major tag team title on an edition of RAW in 1997!

…Kubrik masterminded Dr. Strangelove, loosely basing the movie upon the book “Red Alert” (the book is a completely serious Cold War nuclear war scenario, but Strangelove is a complete and total farce). “Strangelove” came out a year or two after the Cuban October missile crisis, a year after US President John Kennedy was assassinated as well as 2 other contemporaneous films, the brilliant and paranoid “The Manchurian Candidate” and the serious treatment of the same book, “Fail Safe.”

Kubrik originally set out to do a serious treatment of the book. But Kubrik found as he tried to develop the screenplay that he kept running into scenes that he ended up writing as satire. Recognizing the challenge, Kubrik enlisted the talents of one of the best comedic screenwriters in Hollywood, Terry Southern, to do the screenplay.

Casting the film was part genius and part hit-and-miss happy accident. … Somehow Slim Pickens’ name came up and Pickens accepted the role of the B-52 bomber pilot. Even more ironic yet, Slim Pickens was more conservative than Dan Blocker, but Pickens never caught on during the film’s production that Dr. Strangelove was a comedy, much less a satire and a farce unsympathetic to the official propaganda of the cold war.

In of itself, it was a comic master stroke telling Pickens play the role seriously. Pickens was apparently no great wit, so Kubrik was able to keep Pickens completely unaware that Pickens was actually playing in a comedy, not a serious war movie (one can only assume that the humor of the situation was not lost on the other cast members, including James Earl Jones who played Capt. Kong’s bombardier.. “Don’t tell Slim this is all a big joke, we have to let him think this is a real war movie.” ).

Other than Peter Sellers’ roles, George C. Scott (later in “Patton”) and Sterling Hayden delivered memorable performances. Both were obviously instructed to play their roles “over the top.” Kubrik instructed Scott to overact the role of the cigar-smoking, gut-slapping, martini-drinking & womanizing General Buck Turgidson (get it? Turgid-son?). In the scene in the war room where Turgidson exuberantly proclaims the spectacle of a B-52 bomber evading radar by hedge-hopping, Kubrik instructed George C. Scott to deliberately overact the part. Kubrik had Scott re-take the scene several times, asking Scott to make it even more over-the-top than before. On the last take of that scene, Scott practically performed it as a burlesque parody, which was of course, the final take that Kubrik actually used.

Sterling Hayden delivered a brilliant performance as the psychotic Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, the Air Force general who unilaterally orders the nuclear strike against the USSR. The confusion of Cold War paranoia, paranoid psychosis and false sexual power in Hayden’s scenes is the blackest of black satire. Totally over the top, ludicrous and frightenlingly possible (what if one of your top military brass really went insane and over-rode all the safe-guards against nuclear war?). The insane babblings of General Ripper set the film’s direction and act as its centerpiece, delivering both Kubrik’s satire of anti-communist propaganda and the air of impossible odds for the rest of the film’s characters to overcome that they might somehow avert doomsday.

Peter Seller’s performances as the President, the British officer and Dr. Strangelove (a left-over Nazi scientist) are memorable, Sellers delivers the title role as the deranged wheelchair-bound Nazi scientist who suffers from involuntary palsied “Seig Hiels!” in his right arm. Again sex is the real underlying motive to yet another character and the opportunities for a sexually prodigious post-apocalyptic eugenic world brings the deranged Strangelove to a frenzied outburst of libidinal energy: “Mein Fuhrer! I can vwalk!” But as much as I enjoy Sellers’ roles, they seem overshadowed by the rest of the film’s characters. P>It comes probably of no surprise that the U.S. Air Force refused to assist Kubrik in shooting the movie. Having to choice, Kubrik had to resort to mocking up the B-52 flying scenes and bomber interior cabin scenes as best he could (the bomber interior was apparently such a good replica of the real thing that the FBI launched an investigation into who gave Kubrik such a detailed layout of a B-52’s flight deck). Appropriately, the exterior B-52 flying scenes hold a comic flaw if you look closely enough: In one scene, as the damaged bomber hedge-hops across the Siberian taiga (northern boreal forest), you can see that the underlying shadow of the plane is actually that of a four-engine propellor aircraft and doesn’t match the profile of the overlaid B-52 model.

Suffice it to say, when the movie came out, it was not universally received or even widely understood. It was drummed by political commentators and movie reviewers who found it to be tasteless and sophomoric. The studio was very concerned about the potential a negative backlash from its release (consider that in the same year, the Manchurian Candidate was withdrawn from theaters after Kennedy was assassinated). An internal memo described Dr. Strangelove as “a huge, sick malefic joke” and questioned the wisdom of even releasing the movie at all. After all, the movie starts off with B-52’s and tanker planes copulating during mid-flight refuelings, displays Air Force “Peace is Our Profession” billboards in the midst of a fire fight between the US Army and Air Force security, depicts two Air Force generals as complete sex-obsessed baffoons, one a psychotic and the other a braying ass, delivers a deranged Nazi scientist and finally a cowboy pilot bucking the biggest phallic bronco of his career (never mind blowing up the world).

I can think of few other films whose film makers so defied convention and created a story that really turned conventional wisdom on its head. Dr. Strangelove keeps coming at you as one outrageous scene after another, interspersed with segments of complete straight-faced dead-pan, piling them all on until the fateful end. When Pickins died in 1983, CBS news anchor Dan Rather delivered the obituary replete with the out take of Pickins riding the bomb (Perhaps DeForest Kelley topped that and made good on his threat to have “He’s dead, Jim” engraved on his tombstone….).

There are some things you just can’t live down: Being the face that gets a great closing falling scene that leads to the end of all life on Earth happens to be one of those things. Poor Slim, he’s probably suffering in a purgatory of a Liberal Methodist heaven.

In closing, I have to agree with that long-forgotten studio executive who wrote in the memo: Dr. Strangelove *IS* a huge, sick malefic joke. But it is one of the finest huge, sick malefic jokes ever created, and stands as a film masterpiece. Those who extoll the virtues of this fil

I doubt that you could imagine how much it would pain me to give a single-star rating to an edition of the film I consider to be the singular greatest contribution to the motion picture. However, the new “40th Anniversary” edition of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb is, unquestionably, requiring of such a rating. Why?, you ask.

Because about fifteen to twenty percent of the screen image has been removed!!!

If you take a look, you will see that this new “Special” edition of Dr. Strangelove is presented in anamorphic widescreen, with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This, as you can find from examining older editions of the film, is the first time the film has ever been presented in such a manner. The reason why (and you may cross-check this with the Internet Movie Database [IMDb] or any book on Stanley Kubrick worth its salt) is because Dr. Strangelove was NOT FILMED in 1.66:1. It was technically filmed with a varying aspect ratio (the reasons for which are still not fully explicated, as far as I’ve seen), but, in general, it was filmed in about 1.33:1.

So, you ask, how does a film shot in 1.33:1 get presented in 1.66:1? Did someone return to the original negative and uncover material previously hidden from sight, lost on every print and VHS, Beta, laserdisc and DVD copy heretofore released?

NO!

They simply cut off the top and bottom of the screen!!!

Such things are not unprecedented. An extremely similar case is the so-called “panoramic” Gone With The Wind. The film, made in 1939 (before there was anything BUT 1.33:1, the “Academy” aspect ratio), when released in the Panavision/Technorama age of the mid-1960’s was similar chopped and changed to magically become 2.35:1. This edition was released on video and DVD a few times before, finally, it was restored to its original 1.33:1 glory.

Stanley Kubrick was absolutely notorious for his perfectionism and auteur status in the film industry, and I cannot believe that a company proposing to release a definitive “Special” edition of his greatest masterpiece would be so heartless as to unnecessarily delete a good portion of the screen.

Please avoid this new, bastardized Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. While the few new extras thereon are of interest, they can easily be seen via rental from the local video store, as suplemental to the last “Special Edition” of the DVD (which, incidentally, clearly states on the back that it is “Presented in the original aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1″.

Selling the DVDs in ‘best of’ format rather than all the episodes in a format that preserves the broadcast timeline is, in my opinion, a mistake. As other reviewers have pointed out, Mike Judge’s ‘best episodes’ aren’t necessarily mine. Then there’s the fact that 68 episodes are completely missing - that amounts to just over one third of Beavis and Butt-head that didn’t make it into this set. Two stars removed for a flawed format that is very disappointing for those of us who want to see every Beavis & Butt-Head episode in its proper context.

Also, the deletion of certain lines of dialogue from certain episodes is absolutely wrong. Those of us who appreciated ALL the writing have been swindled. One star removed for this awful decision.

Finally, in my opinion, separating the music videos out and adding them as extras is a great solution to a difficult problem. Some of us disliked the music videos while some liked them. Then there’s the problem of obtaining copyright. This method satisfies everyone as much as possible. We get to see the show without the distraction of the videos while those who enjoyed the music videos get to see them. One star added for this excellent decision. I only wish every decision made by the producers of this DVD box set was as intelligent as this one.

So all-in-all 3 stars.

Some of these are classic episodes. In my opinion to omit any of them is a crime, especially considering that the true fans of the show have waited years hoping for ALL of B&B to finally be published.

Unlike the first volume, where Mike Judge edited dialogue bits out of more than half the episodes, the dreaded “director’s cuts” are nowhere to be found. Some reviewers here have suggested that this volume also contains altered versions of the cartoons, but all that is missing from them (as usual) are the music videos. The harsh fan reaction regarding the edited first volume apparently got back to Mike Judge, because he made the right decision to keep this batch in their original form.

Contrary to some reviewers’ claims, even after Volume 3 all the episodes will not have been released to DVD. Mike Judge has made it clear that Volumes 1-3 will contain roughly two-thirds of the total episodes. He considers the rest to be too poor to be included.

I happen to agree with Mike Judge that, generally speaking, the later episodes are actually better than the earlier ones. But I still strongly disagree with his decision to leave approximately one third of the episodes unreleased.

I’m glad the episodes collected here are complete. As for the bonus features, they are okay - I’m not sure there’s really enough to justify the third disc. The main featurette (Taint of Greatness Pt 2) is only about 20 minutes long - several minutes shorter than part one - and is very heavy on episode clips. The selection of music videos is probably the only feature that most people will return to.

For those who have the Time-Life DVDs, you will find many duplicate episodes (though not quite as many as with the first volume).

Stop reading now if you don’t want to have the rest of the episodes spoiled. I have to say that I love this new Shredder. I mean, I’ll always enjoy the Shredder of my youth. The old Tmnt 1987 Shredder, but this guy… He doesn’t play around. He’s the type of villain who makes you love to hate him because of his actions. He’s not your normal Saturday morning cartoon villain. I mean, he broke both of Mikey’s legs. Burnt Splinter pretty bad. Knocked Leonardo onto Karai’s sword and caused him to be stabbed. I hope this isn’t the last we see of Shredder. Karai makes a good stand in, but no one kicks shell like our man Saki. And having the turtles basicly lose the fight was interesting. You always expect the good guys to win in fights with villains, but this wasn’t the case. Yeah, the turtles did win, but they got the living mess beat out of them.

This dvd also includes a few episodes from Season Iv. Cousin Sid, Dragon’s Brew, and Bad day. The last two are wonderful. Bad Day especially because we get a bit of foreshadowing concerning the foot mystics and Karai that’s very important later on in the season. Also, we get our first look at the Heart of Tengu. I’d not seen this ep before I watched Good Geens, but now I understand how it all fits together.

Ok, so this Dvd’s a must have for the Tmnt 2003 animated series fan. So I strongly suggest you buy it.
