HONDO is a solid Western in the best tradition of the genre. Based on the fable “The Gift of Cochise” by Louis L’Amour, John Wayne brings the character Hondo Lane to the cloak juxtaposed with his familiar hide presence yet fair to L’Amour’s spirit of the literary “Western.” James Edward Grant’s script is impressively sympathetic to the American Indian given the period when this film was produced. Geraldine Page as Angie is perfectly naïve as the homesteader living alone with her son in the start wilderness of rock and dust (artistically captured by Robert Burks’ cinematography) . However, it is John Wayne’s portrayal as the enigmatically tough yet unemotionally tender survivor of this barren country that is the strength of this film. The music for HONDO is credited to both Emil Newman and Hugo Friedhofer and their impressive melody for HONDO majestically reflects the proper and plucky stature of the man.

I have certainly seen grand worse Western movies all ready out on DVD. I wish this colossal one was available on DVD. I caught it on TV this weekend during a John Wayne marathon of movies. The acting, sets, directing, scenery, and music all stand out on this one. Many critics deem “The Searchers” is titanic but although I reflect it is a wonderfully shot movie I don’t mediate the interaction is as believable as “Hondo”. The cast here does a amazing job of making me possess what is happening and that I’m with them in that time period. John Furrow must have worked hard directing to come by such results.

The attitude towards Indians is great more appropriate as well. The camera work is top-notch. Especially proper with wide scenic shots and close-ups of the actors. The directing as I said before is splendid, and the scope of acting in this movie is some of the best I have seen in a John Wayne movie or any Western for that matter. Geraldine Page is gargantuan as the Duke’s admire interest. She does a blooming job portraying a pioneer woman. Ward Bond, Michael Pate, James Arness, and the rest the cast to a exquisite job supporting. I hope you regain the opportunity to spy it. I’m obvious you will agree it is a top notch Western and it should be on DVD.

As an addendum I want to thank the studio for finally releasing a extraordinary quality DVD with several extras. This is a personal approved and I want to thank those of you nice enough to vote for my review. It is people like you showing an interest in these classics that prompts the studios to do a ample job of restoring the movies and releasing them on DVD.

Why can’t we all be more like Cartman? I am so indignant that “South Park” is finally putting out a best-of Cartman station. If you’ve watched this long running, wholesome, family-friendly series then you know exactly what I mean. Cartman is such a cute diminutive critter. And so colorful and loving. When I deem of Cartman I am always reminded of all the expedient that Jesus has done. Cartman is a totally thankless individual who only wants to spread worship and devotion.

Released on the eve of “South Park’s” premiere (the second half of Season 12 kicks off on 10/8 with an entirely original ep all about Cartman, The China Probrem) is “The Cult of Cartman - Revelations.” (Some brick & mortar, big-box stores like Wal-Mart, Best Catch and Target are likely selling this modern situation before 10/7 though.) Anyway, this is a 2-DVD area which includes a total of a dozen of Cartman’s most-loved, classic eps. My common is probably your well-liked too, Scott Tenorman Must Die. If you learn one thing from Cartman it’s never to piss him off because he may obtain you eat your parents!

The station is packaged very cleverly to seek like a Holy Bible. The wait on conceal includes a pic of Cartman with his hands up in a devotional pose (I believe it’s a pic from the Christian Rock ep) . Each disc is gloomy and includes the same pic of Cartman. Cartman also pops up for a rare appearance on this state introducing the eps.

Sorry Fred Flintstone and Bart Simpson, Eric Cartman is by far the most approved and the most controversial TV star in the entire history of episodidc TV. That is because Cartman tells it like it is and isn’t shrinking to pick chances or try something a miniature different. He doesn’t care about being common or fitting in because all that matters to Cartman (besides Jesus and food, of course) is being tickled. Cartman is a lawful hedonist in the purest and simplist execute. Never has there been another person like Cartman.

Made to inspect like a book with gold leaf edging on the sides, the modern packaging will appeal to the fans who must have everything South Park.

The collection of “a dozen of Cartman’s most distinguished teachings” will appeal to the casual fan who does not want to invest in season sets.

If you are eager in a thorough but provocative history of Original York City this is as superior as it gets. Ric Burns provides plenty of details but doesn’t forget that fragment of the reason viewers are watching is to have some fun too. Eight DVDS may seem like too powerful but with a city like Current York it is surprising how snappily the reveal passes by, this collection is gargantuan enough to give you a serious history of the topic without getting too complicated. If you are looking for a move guide to NYC this isn’t for you, if you are a sports fan scrutinize elsewhere, don’t query a guide to theatre or restaurants either. This DVD plot is meant as a visual history course of America’s, if not the world’s, most appealing city.

This is the definitive gift for anyone who loves Unusual York City. The series is presented in easily digestible pieces and all the episodes procedure you into a period in NYC’s history and give you a pleasant concept of what makes the City so unusual. The final episode, about the building and the destruction of the World Trade Center, will touch your heart as well as your mind.

Does this movie have a position worth watching? No. Is it a masterpiece of staging and spot direction? No. Will this movie exhibit up in a retrospective of vast American 20th Century cinema? Not a chance in hell.

So what does this movie have? Well, Alyssa Milano, frequently nude, and occasionally in softcore sex scenes. Does that design it worth watching? Yes, definitely if you luxuriate in Alyssa Milano. Her portrayal of a naive, virginal co-ed rings a petite less than apt, but her seduction scene with the photographer alone is almost worth the heed of the tape. The vampire orgy sequence and her dream foursome certainly round out the cost of the video. I would, however, recommend the DVD version if you’re planning on buying it. The DVD’s ability to have short sections accelerate repeatedly without degrading the playback quality will demonstrate invaluable.

I location this film along side “Showgirls” as a truly well-known guilty pleasure, this film is an absolute riot, you unprejudiced can’t withhold a straight face. It begins in “the past,” one of those historicaly ambiguous time periods where folks wore armer but also had perfect hair and teeth, some guy is minding his contain business, sleeping or whatever outside by a brook, it looks like one of those romance new covers. Three buxom vampires approach up out of nowhere, they ogle suspiciously like exotic dancers from Deja vu, or perhaps the local Hooters rented these “vampires” for the day, he doesn’t establish up noteworthy of a fight (neither would I) and soon we are transported to “the indicate day,” sometime in the behind 90’s I select to a school that looks a lot like Stanford. Alyssa Malano is a fresh student, she is a virgin and tells us so, repeatedly in conversations with her long suffering boyfriend, she is fond of crucifixes and kneels and prays a lot, the prayers do her dinky friendly however for soon the very vampire we saw in the beginning, is aid, evidently he was somehow frozen in time and his coffin was transported to some outmoded building on the college campus (a fraternity prank perhaps, the musty, lets go the coffin thing) the coffin, and it’s occupant, go unnoticed at this strangest of colleges, a school where there is easy parking and no students ever seem to venture out of the dorms noteworthy, at least no one sees this caped vampire walking around the school, perhaps they deem he is the dean, or some original security guy, the one with the cape, who knows. Our fanged friend is not really all that involved in Alyssa’s blood, he is more obsessed with her breasts, as are the cameraman, the writer, the actors and actresses and the audience, and what breast they are! This is the first time I can remember a pair of hooters having there contain theme song, but they do, a special “boob anthem” is played every time abominable Allissa is forced to remover her top, why she has to be topless for so grand of the film is a mystery, a mystery no one gives a rats ass about, we wanted boobs and we got them. Nice boobs too. I had to feel a shrimp for Allyssa though, she couldn’t seem to understand why virtually every scene had her jugs bared, but she was a marvelous sport about it. Most of the film takes set in “dream sequences”, even though she is wide awake sometimes (at a party everyone dissapears so our heriion can meet the vampire and disrobe…again) and a total stranger, a women meets the hapless Allyssa on the campus and shows her a shimmering unique camera, apparently MS Malano has never seen one before and soon she is off in the studio, removing her shirt and kissing this unfamiliar women, that settles it, I am getting a camera and heading straight to the nearest college campus, fair after a find a cape and some plastic fangs. This is a alarm film but all the true alarm seems to be on the face of Allissa Malano who seems timid that she, and virtual everyone else, has no dialogue and that she is constantly having her breasts examined, yes it’s well-behaved to be a vampire, or a film maker, I wonder if the Olsen Twins will be ready to invent a “Vampire” film when they turn 18, I certainly hope so.

Search for the Truth

Amos Lassen

Buy,Download, Or Stream Constantine’s Sword! Click Here

“Constantine’s Sword (First Hurry Features), based on the bestseller by James Carroll, is a search for the truth that comes face-to-face with persecution and violence in the name of G-d not only in the past but at indicate as well. The film, directed by Oren Jacoby, examines the legacy that has been passed from generation to generation beginning with the Emperor Constantine and extending to recent day religious fanaticism.

The film plays like a detective myth. We follow Carroll as he goes into his beget past and into the larger world where he finds Christian church violence against non-Christians. We go to the Air Force Academy where we search for evangelicals trying to catch converts within the armed forces of America and we gawk how religious influence can bring about serious consequences on American foreign policy. We are then faced with the inquire of of whether it is fanaticism fueled by religious fervor that threatens the new world.

The title, “Constantine’s Sword” refers to the Christian ghastly which caused the Emperor Constantine to cry “in this mark you will conquer” thereby making the contaminated a symbol of war rather than a symbol of savor and peace.

The film looks at the history of Christianity as a trend that caused oppression which led to the most contaminated crime of all, the Holocaust. It also looks at the note day and concentrates on the family of Mickey Weinstein and how it challenges the evangelicalism of the Air Force Academy.

This is perhaps the most shiny documentary I have ever seen and it mesmerized me completely. It exposes religion as an underlying and unhealthy trend in the unusual world and compares the religious fervor of today with the Crusades when so many were slaughtered in the name of G-d. This is a film that will streak and appall you. Hopefully it will also cause you to query yourself in order to live a better and more fair life.

“Constantine’s Sword,” the movie version of John Carroll’s book, is now available on DVD; it can also be watched on-line if you have Netflix.

There’s a mammoth deal of autobiography in the film. Carroll’s father, Joseph Carroll was an notable Air Force general; an FBI agent, Joseph Carroll was then sent to the modern Air Force, commissioned a colonel, and within two years was a major general. He was the founding director of the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations, and then the founding director of the Defense Intelligence Agency; it was he who brought the photos of Russian missles in Cuba to Kennedy’s attention.

The younger Carroll grew up on military bases, met John XXIII with his family as a teenager, and in the wake of the nuclear uncertainty of the Chilly War, opted to pursue those things that would last. His first mass was famed at a chapel on an Air Force base; growing disillusioned with the war in Vietnam, and feeling called to follow the Prince of Peace, he slipped in unprejudiced a diminutive allusion in that first homily. He preached on Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones; he mentioned they had been burned by the sun. More than that, burned by napalm. Such a petite rebellion-such a miniscule insult to the military-but enough to drive a wedge between James and Joseph.

Carroll was a priest from 1969-1974, increasingly active in opposing the war, which destroyed his faith in both governmental and churchly authority. In an interview from those days he notes the silence of the US Catholic hierarchy to the bombing of civilians in Vietnam and opines, “Were US bombers dropping contraceptives on the Vietnamese, the American Catholic hierarchy would have condemned it quickly; but we were dropping napalm, and they said nothing.”

These personal stories are sketched throughout the movie, which begins at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and the divulge of aggressive evangelization of non-Christians, especially Jewish students, by evangelical churches in the situation and by evangelical faculty, staff and students of the Academy. He interviews Academy graduate Mikey Weinstein, who was timorous when one of his two sons then at the Academy told him of anti-Jewish slurs he had been subjected to, and of the aggressive promotion of “The Passion of the Christ” by the Academy.

Carroll uses this incident to initiate into a discussion of two issues: the history of Christian hostility to Jews, and of the linkage of Christianity with military power. He visits Milvian Bridge outside Rome, and Constantine’s vision of a base with the motto, “In hoc signo vinces,” becomes the guiding metaphor for the book-”Nefarious and sword become one. Christianity turns violent.”

He surveys how this baptized violence spread across Europe, and became a means to unite feuding Christian kingdoms in a war against a accepted enemy, the Muslim “infidel”-and against closer enemies, against whom Christians had a long-standing grudge.

Carroll relates how he grew up in a typical Irish-Catholic family, trusting in a holy church with holy saints, priests and bishops. Now he saw those “holy” priests and bishops calling for bloody conquest, even leading pogroms against Jews in the name of Christ.

He travels to Spain, where Jews were first forced to convert to Christianity; then, when Christians became suspicious of the integrity of those they had forcibly converted, the Spanish Inquisition was created to investigate and to punish. When Jews were expelled from Spain, many were welcome in Rome, until 1555, when chief Roman inquisitor Giovanni Cardinal Caraffa became Pope Paul IV, who restricted Jewish intercourse with Christians and created a ghetto in which they must live.

Though novel popes, especially John Paul II, have taken enormous strides to repair relations with Jews, Carroll doesn’t judge they’ve gone far enough. John Paul denounced Nazi antisemitism, but blamed it on neo-paganism, refusing to answer that another share of its foundation was the legacy of Christian anti-Judaism, of accusations of “Christ-killer” and the blood libel. Only this can define the collusion of many Catholic prelates with Nazism. He goes to Trier, where one of the supposed relics brought benefit from the Holy Land by Helena, the Robe of Christ, has been kept since the time of Constantine. The Bishop of Trier supported the National Socialists in the election of 1933, and to celebrate their victory, arranged for the Robe to be displayed. Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen represented Hitler, and, with the bishop, sent a telegram to Hitler pledging their mutual cooperation. While it was on expose, Eugenio Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) signed the concordat with Hitler-protecting the institutional church while accepting Nazi rule. Pacelli might not have been “Hitler’s Pope,” says Carroll, but he was certainly “Hitler’s Cardinal.”

That same year Edith Stein wrote to the pope to warn of Nazi antisemitism and of the black future that would face Europe’s Jews; five years later, now known as Teresa Benedicta of the Harmful, she lamented in her diary that the pope had never bothered to answer … and that all she had predicted had reach good. This wasn’t mentioned in her canonization in 1998; she was canonized as a martyr, despite the fact that she went to Auschwitz not because of her Catholic faith, but for her Jewish blood.

In Rome, the anti-Jewish legislation of Paul IV was rescinded when Italy unified and the pope was banished to the Vatican; it was revived by Mussolini, however, and when in 1943 Mussolini rounded up the Jews of Rome to deport to Auschwitz, the pope said nothing. A survivor says in the film, “If the pope had only taken the pains to go outside the gate-and not say anything, honest do as he did when Rome was bombed-just go outside the gate and stand in silence, with his arms raised in the produce of a noxious, there might never have been a deportation. Italians and German Catholics would not have gone along with it.” But he never appeared.

Carroll affirms the strides taken forward by the Catholic Church in the latter allotment of the 20th century, especially the “change that mattered most” at Vatican 2, the decree, Nostra Aetate. But he wonders how distinguished it has sunk in. He speaks with Fr. Stanislaw Obirek, a Polish Jesuit, suspended by his order because, Carroll says, he wanted a fuller accounting for the Catholic Church’s role in Polish antisemitism.

Returning to the US, Carroll listens to the rhetoric of George Bush’s “war on panic”-language of “crusade,” “excellent vs. despicable,” “God is not neutral”-and hears echoes of past attempts to fuse irascible and sword That’s what frightens him about what he saw happening at the Air Force Academy; it appears to be a case of religion and military power coming together, with young evangelicals in the military inspired by their religious zeal to fight Middle East enemies. This isn’t the spirit of Jesus, but the spirit of Constantine, which is level-headed alive after 1700 years.

The movie can be faulted for its disparagement of Scripture (Carroll accepts uncritically whatever Elaine Pagels tells him), but it remains a much testimony to the experiences of those who have been gash by Constantine’s sword.

This is not only my well-liked western, but it is also one of my accepted films. I don’t recall a lot of videos to bear, but I had to have this one in my permanent library. When the DVD comes out I’ll be determined to bag it, too.

When I first saw this in the theaters in ‘72 I was attracted by the action, the humor, and the sentimentality ( I quiet can’t hold a dry inspect when I spy the final scene with the peek own….) As I got older I realised that there is a lot more to this movie. There is a consistent theme about Law and Justice, and the distinction between them.

When we first observe Roy Bean he is a petty outlaw, less than a man. He has total contempt for law and justice, which he doesn’t distinguish between. Then, when he first becomes a “Consider”, it is in dubious title only- to believe his absorb pockets. As time goes on he intuitively dispenses right Justice in the name of the Law. By the final climactic scene, when asked who he is, he replies simply, “Justice.” He has gone beefy cycle, from a scoff-law and less than a man, to the embodyment of Justice itself, to more than a man.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean! Click Here

You’ll search for that his chief adversary is a Lawyer Gass, a man that knows everything about the Law and nothing about Justice. A “man” that steals more with good trickery than the customary outlaws ever dreamed of stealing. It was this movie that made me spy that Law is the creation of men, while Justice is an ideal that emanates directly from God.

I don’t know if this is the theme that John Huston had in mind, but it is what I come by out of it.

This ace of a flick really catches the spirit of the ragged reflect who made his bear law west of the Pecos. They don’t accomplish microscopic radiant eccentric puny films like this considerable these days. Everybody in the movie is just on the money too. A splendid Jaqueline Bisset stars as the judge’s tough assertive daughter. This must have been one of her earliest roles, and she turns in a gorgeous endearing performance. And of course there are too many broad names in this movie, Ned Beatty, Roddy McDowell, Stacey Keach, Tony Perkins, and of course Paul Newman as the contemplate himself. Do yourself a treat and assume this one up! You’ll be gay you did.

EPISODE 24: Cloris Leachman

Most of these shows have a lot to offer, but to me two really stand out. First, the John Cleese reveal is hilarious. In its Pigs in Plot skit, the Monty Python star chews up the scenery as pirate Long John Silversteen. “A pirate don’t consume an intercom!” Cleese scarls when a Muppet suggests a new arrangement to communicate. “‘Twould be sissy!” The Nureyev episode, on the other hand, is a sincere oddity. After the ballet star sings “Putting On My Top Hat,” he shoots down his chorus line with a machine gun. Later, he dances to “Swan Lake” with a human-size pig.

Bonus features include “The Muppets Valentine Day Special,” a 1974 television pilot which aired more than two years before “The Muppet Expose” debuted. Kermit the Frog and actress Mia Farrow star, but the host is Wally, a Henson character who would rarely be seen again. Also included is “The Muppets on The Muppets,” (a 13-minute series of tongue-in-cheek interviews) and the 2002 music video “Hold Fishin’” by Weezer.

Also worth mentioning is the packaging. The menus on each disc are hosted (Fozzie Contain and Kermit chat with you on Discs 1 and 3; Animal and Rizzo handle Discs 2 and 4) and the episodes themselves have (unidentified) chapter stops. In addition, the box itself is more than objective cardboard, at least in this initial printing. On the front, Miss Piggy’s face is fuzzy, and her blue eyes sparkle.

Problems? Unprejudiced one: the closed captioning doesn’t include any song lyrics!

Two years of painful waiting has finally produced Season 2 of “The Muppet Exhibit” on DVD. Compiliation of season one was apparently fraught with copyright squabbles, resulting in some missed segments and shows of varied length. Happily, all shows on this space race to approximately the same length and indicate no signs of slicing and dicing. And that’s favorable, because The Muppets became stars (well, quasi-stars, they were puppets) during this season and were able to attract bigger names. In difference to season one, anyone alive in 1977-78 would gape 95% of the names listed on the box: Elton John, Bob Hope, George Burns, Julie Andrews, Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Petula Clark, and on and on. Anyone who wasn’t there will probably wonder how a bunch of savor talking oven mitts ever caught on with the public. Those who were there know why. Season 2 solidified the cast: Kermit as undisputed front runner (he plays marginal roles in the pilots), Miss Piggy as the pig infused with unrequited fancy, Fozzy as the cheesy comedian, Statler and Waldorf as the curmudgeon critics, Gonzo as the frustrated artist. The indefatigable “Pigs in Area” also made its debut. Season two ends up being worth the wait. It even has a fuzzy veil.

The show’s formula remained vaudevillian with songs, skits, and stars. Ghosts of the Marx Brothers loom in the background. Puns and slapstick abound. Even international artistic sensations such as Rudolph Nureyev fall all pretensions. Nureyev dances with a grand pig. He sings, dressed only in a towel, “Baby, it’s cool outside” with an enraged Miss Piggy. She tries to abscond with the towel. The guy definitely had a sense of humor. When Steve Martin appeared, the prove was canceled. Instead they held auditions for recent acts. Martin plays his famed “wild and crazy guy” (sans obscenities) to its hammy limits. He has to compete with the vivid “ribbit” song duet, who do enthralling renditions of “Musty Man Ribbit” and “Map Down Upon the Swami Ribbit.” A hard act to beat, for determined. Elton John fits lawful in with chickens in leather, enormous feathery creatures and singing crocodiles providing accompaniment. Judy Collins does an fabulous rendition of “There was an Primitive Woman who Swallowed a Coast.” Julie Andrews, serene in robust verbalize, reprises her Sound of Music days with Muppetry. Peter Sellers delivers the usual hilarious and disturbing performance. He squawks to Kermit “There is no me I do not exist. There feeble to be a me but I had it surgically removed.” And of course John Cleese steals the entire indicate. Even Muppets can’t compete.

Season one included the show’s pilot, and this site includes a sort of a pilot. In 1974 “The Muppets Valentine Special” aired with guest Mia Farrow. It was a test speed. The formula wasn’t exactly perfected yet, though an it presents an captivating gaze at the formation of the Muppets. Ernie and Bert even appear. But don’t blink. This experiment remains a far roar from the hit explain that debuted a few years later. By 1981 the Muppets were so mammoth that Jim Henson pulled the TV prove for larger bait, namely more movies. But in the slow 1970s the Muppets reigned on television. Season 2 showcases their imminent rise and shows once and for all that there was entertainment before CG.

Now how long before Season 3?

Something is definitely inappropriate with this portray!! Where is Criterion, or some other company that is neglecting one of the greatest movies of the 20th C?

Cacoyannis assembled one of the most sublime international casts ever in this classic. Few movies can arrive broad literature as far as providing a microcosm of “the human condtition,” to consume an overworked, but pleasant phrase. This is one of the few that can. The position, which is secondary to the theme, revolves around the wizened, but peaceful vibrant Greek peasant Zorba (Quinn) teaching the young, uptight, sexually confused (OK, maybe that’s not PC of me, but it’s certainly the subtext) Brit mine-owner “boss” Basil (Alan Bates), about the facts of life.

Zorba is one of the colossal lovable rogues of cinema history, maybe even the most memorable. Wine, women, song and dance are his credo, and we near to learn that they are his defense against some personal tragedy in his background. This film is unmatched in terms of playing the silly against the tragic, the many facets of life that color loyal existence, as opposed to the usual Hollywood, one dimensional perspectives. There are layers within layers to the message here, fair as in expansive fiction or theater. What it boils down to, however, is about friendship. Zorba and Basil go through so worthy together, running the chubby gamut of human emotions, that by the perfectly realized ending (the best I can pick in current or distant memory, outside of Fellini’s La Strada maybe [another Quinn movie, incidentally]), this viewer was breaking down in sheer joy/release/catharsis. The Greeks have long had a knack for this, have you noticed?

As a footnote, the soundtrack is also legendary, thanks to Greece’s most eminent acquire composer, Mikis Theadorakis. I’m not going to gripe here, but how did Alan Bates pass on without an Oscar on his mantle? This was essentially Cacoyannis’ and Quinn’s project, however, and they should live on in every film buff’s memory for ages to arrive for this masterpiece on both their parts. Irene Papas, as a widow who shoots some of the most unforgettable darting glances in film history, and Lila Kedrova as the black, but ever hopeful Madame Hortense, are also highly memorable. And where did Cacoyannis obtain those conventional, withered, diminuitive, toothless harpies that hung about the bedside like vultures gathering for a feast?

Do what you can to re-view this fair classic on VHS while we hope and pray that the eventual DVD treatment will be of grand quality.

BEK

Since I am leaving today for a whisk to Greece I figured I should see “Zorba the Greek” since this 1964 film is considered the quintessential “Greek” film. I have to admit my first reaction was to be joyful I was not going to Crete, because the intention the locals treated the aesthetic widow (Irene Papas) and Madame Hortense (Lila Kedrova), the extinct prostitute, were outright horrific. But this is why people like us and young Basil (Alan Bates) need to meet up with somebody with a zest for life like Alexis Zorba (Anthony Quinn) .

Basil is an Englishman of Greek extraction who goes to Crete to check out a mine he has inherited. Zorba attaches himself to Basil, ostensibly as a cook but clearly as a guide to the joys and tragedies of life. In terms of Quinn’s performance the only thing you can really say is that before there was Robert Begnigni there was Zorba the Greek when it comes to Mediterranean men who provided inspirational madness. As Zorba tells Basil: “Dammit, boss, I like you too considerable not to say it. You’ve got everything except one thing. Madness! A man needs a petite madness, or else…he never dares slash the rope and be free.” +

When they advance on Crete it becomes certain the mine is not going to pan out for anybody. They fade in with Madame Hortense, who is wooed by Zorba, who insists Basil go after the graceful local widow. After these tragedies all that is left is Zorba’s idea for bringing trees down from the top of the mountain, an endeavor obviously equally doomed to failure. This is why in the waste there is only one thing a man can do, and it is in this cathartic conclusion that any and all sins of this film are absolved.

“Zorba the Greek” is written and directed by Michael Cacoyannis, based on the unique by Nikos Kazantzakis. The film won three Academy Awards: Lila Kedrova for Best Supporting Actress, Best Art/Set Direction, and Best Cinematography. Quinn did not glean the Oscar for what is clearly his most memorable role in a long and well-known film career, but that is usually the case with actors and their greatest roles. Marlon Brando did not accumulate for Stanley Kowalski and Quinn did not earn for Alexis Zorba. What is a man to do in the face of such a fate but dance?
