It amazes me how incredibly well this 1969 western has held up after all these years. At once classically structured and satirically executed, director George Roy Hill and screenwriter William Goldman have pulled together a supremely sharp period recount that caters to contemporary sensibilities to this day. It is to their credit that the film remains just to the characters and never gets too huge during its posthaste paced 110-minute running time. The chronicle naturally revolves around the legendary outlaws who robbed banks at the turn of the last century. Their escapades are divided roughly into three sections in the film. The first is the introductory set-up where their opposite yet complementary personalities are established. Leading the motley Hole in the Wall Gang, they ultimately pull off a grunt robbery with an excess of dynamite. The second section is an extended scuttle sequence where Butch and Sundance are chased relentlessly by a group of unknown bounty hunters.

The third and final section details their elope to Bolivia where they are positive to go straight but gain caught up with local bandits and bag their contemptible past catching up with them. It seems inconceivable to have anyone other than Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the title roles. As the more established star at the time, Newman is characteristically laconic as Butch. His innate likeability is enhanced by his rascally manner and crack comedy timing. In the more old-fashioned gunslinger role, Redford provides the ideal partner with his flinty manner and unavoidable charisma. In between them is Katharine Ross, new from “The Graduate”, who plays Etta with sensual élan, though she does not figure in the most notable scenes. Of course, Burt Bacharach’s instantly recognizable musical bag is here, and while there is an anachronistic feel to such 1960’s-sounding pop music over a western, it somehow works because the attitude of the film seems so novel. Even the comically romantic bicycle sequence manages to support its buoyancy thanks to the inane but undeniably catchy “Raindrops Support Fallin’ on My Head”.

Conrad Hall’s vibrant, burnished cinematography deserves special mention as it has been preserved well in the 2006 Ultimate Collector’s Edition DVD package. The rest of the two-disc package is robust though bordering on overkill, adding on to the features that were already included in the previous 2000 Special Edition DVD. Retained from that edition is the sharp combination of perspectives provided by Hill, Hall, lyricist Hal David and associate producer Bob Crawford in their joint commentary track. Fresh is separate and equally insightful commentary from Goldman. Another holdover from the previous edition is the forty-minute vintage documentary, “The Making of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid”, a mild terrific featurette from 1970 with participation from Newman, Goldman, Hill and Redford.

There are three original documentaries - a 2005 retrospective scrutinize at the film called “All of What Follows is True: The Making of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”; a fact-check featurette called “The Wild Bunch: The Correct Yarn of Butch & Sundance”; and the somewhat repetitive “History Through the Lens: Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid: Outlaws Out of Time”, a cumulative difficulty which combines elements of all the other documentaries into one ninety-minute feature. Lots of mammoth insight is provided on the 1994 interviews with Newman, Redford, Ross, Goldman and Bacharach. A deleted scene is also included with Hill’s commentary (since the audio had been lost) - it is a disposable transitional scene where Butch and Sundance are watching newsreel footage of themselves in a Bolivian theater while Etta quietly leaves to the dispute spot. Lastly, there are trailers for eight of Newman’s vintage films. This is definitely a robust package for one of the grand films of the 1960’s.

This disc ranks suitable up there with one of the worst Blu-ray transfers I believe (along with the first Stargate release) . It is a shame, as this is a really mammoth and fun movie. It is one of the first westerns I retract that really interspersed humor with drama in an effective diagram. I concept it tried to be a bit too great or to have something for everyone (the bicycle scene went on a runt long for my taste, for example) . Audio is beautiful but the failure to effect a really outstanding video transfer (as was done with Patton recently) will disappoint the many fans of this movie who were eagerly awaiting this release.

Who would have view that a collie could inspire such loyalty and devotion from movie goers? When Loewes Inc. President Nicholas Schenk first screened “Lassie Approach Home” he reportedly told director, Fred Wilcox that it was so awful he was going to recommend to MGM’s mogul, L.B. Mayer, that the film not be released. Thankfully, Mayer conception otherwise and the film, with all its maudlin charm and abundantly potent sentimentality, became one of the biggest grossing films of 1943. What makes “Lassie Advance Home” such an keen and enduring cinematic experience is the tender and wistful relationship between Joe Carraclough (Roddy McDowell) and his trusty four-legged companion. When Joe’s father, Sam (Donald Crisp) is forced to sell Lassie to the wealthy, Duke of Rudling (Nigel Bruce), Joe’s heart is shattered. But the collie refuses to cease with his modern master, crossing hill and dale, stream and mountain in a picturesque rush that is in the best tradition of travelogue meets melodrama. At the age of ten, Elizabeth Taylor completely captivates as Pricilla, the Duke’s granddaughter who eventually realizes that the bond between Joe and Lassie can never and should never be broken. Truthfully, I found myself getting a lump in the throat when at last Joe - who can’t acquire his eyes when, after some time Lassie suddenly appears patiently waiting for him outside in the school yard - utters the now grand clichéd and overplayed “Oh, there’s my Lassie, approach home!” This film is the sort of MGM glamorous treatment that all of the studio’s best movies had in spades. It’s lushly photographed and vibrantly told with poignant performances that have long withstood the test of time.

Warner’s DVD is somewhat of a disappointment. Not having considered the overall magnitude and enduring impact of the film on audiences Warner has not done a thing to restore “Lassie Advance Home” to its unusual brilliance. The outmoded film negative exhibits a very dated portray with inconsistently rendered colors that, at times, are vibrant - if garish - and other times, quite pale and uninspiring. Age related artifacts abound throughout and there is a much amount of edge enhancement and pixelization. Overall, glorious details are very nicely realized. However, inequity and unlit levels are not very solid. The audio is mono but respectably cleaned up and presented with a fidelity that outweighs the visual characteristics. There are NO extras.

This is a marvelous film, taken nearly word-for-word from Eric Knight’s fresh about the faithful collie who travels a thousand miles from northern Scotland to England to return to the boy she loves. Lassie is neither Superdog or magically endowed, unprejudiced following archaic instincts and the like in her heart. The entire cast is suited, the color brings the countryside to life, and diminutive scenes will swagger your heart out, including Dame May Whitty as a lonely broken-down lady willing to let Lassie go rather than have her fret.

I care for care for appreciate this movie, but you have to develop distinct you catch the VHS version (where the VHS mask is the cast riding in the car.) Lucky for me, this is the one I absorb. I guess I was lucky enough to bag my hands on a VHS copy of this movie with the current music, which did not include any Chris Isaak or K.D. Lang songs. If this is a period movie (and it should be), then period music should be worn in all the versions. It sounds like they couldn’t glean accurate clearance to exercise all of the new music for the movie, so they replaced songs like “Another Saturday Night” by Sam Cooke with a song by K.D. Lang, who was probably mild in diapers in 1963. That’s where the movie took a dive for me in a broad plot on the DVD version and it only got worse as the movie went on. Other songs were swapped out and music was added in scenes, like at the Carnival and the “Wild Night” scene, where the recent version had no music.

Maybe if enough fans of this movie complain, MGM will blow the dust off their checkbook and pay the fresh artists (or their estates) to rep the rights to consume their music. Some bonus features would be nice too. The least they could do was to allow 60 Shrimp Man to accomplish playing in the credits, like it did on VHS. If you are lucky enough to gain an novel VHS copy, you’ll peer MGM did not rush the fat credits like you would normally gaze in a movie, which would include the music credits.

I highly recommend this movie if you like the MGM musicals or if you like Fred Astaire. Fred may not do a lot of dancing in this one but it’s detached a gargantuan film. Another mammoth thing about this movie is compared to the other film bio-pics on songwriters this one Three Runt Words is actually a very proper depiction of the lives of tunesmiths Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. I heard Harry Ruby had a stout deal of input for the making of this film. Anyway gawk this movie, the cast, the music and everything else in this movie is tremendous!

This is one of Astaire`s lesser known vehicles, but in my concept - 1 of his very best. It was his acquire popular movie. Miss Dahl has visited her homeland many times and has done wonders for the Norwegian community in the States. She is also the mother of Lorenzo Lamas of Falcon Crest and Renegade fame.

The four movies in this space (The Duel, The Fireship, The Duchess and the Devil, and The Unpleasant War) are adapted from C.S. Forester’s “Mr. Midshipman Hornblower.” The movies’ writers have done an suitable job of transferring the original to the veil. Although they have made changes that may offend some Hornblower purists, I found the changes worked well in this medium. There is plenty of action with sea and land battles, as well as individual acts of heroism. But the characters are also developed in the writing and in the ample performances by a very talented cast.

The DVDs are well done. The video looks very suitable, considering that this was originally made for television. The represent is spellbinding and the colors are accurate. The sound is genuine, though it won’t strain your system. The disks are surprisingly well stocked with supplemental material. The first two movies provide a bio of Forester and a glossary of nautical terms in text. The third disk contains the “making of” documentary that was shown on A&E and the History Channel when the series was originally aired. And the last disk contains a documentary about the Royal Navy, contrasting Nelson’s era with the expose. This expose is hosted by (Prince) Edward Windsor and originally appeared as one of the Gigantic Ships episodes on the History Channel.

Any fan of the Hornblower novels should peek this series. Any fan of historical movies should search for this series. Any one who enjoys a edifying movie that tells a chronicle fleshy of heroism and honor should behold this series! I can’t recommend it enough.

The DVDs are top quality, with a determined chubby camouflage image and grand sound effects in Dolby Surround. The extras on the DVD are also suited with a decent ‘making of’ documentary.

It’s the variety in the movies that makes the box site so amicable. The Duel is a splendid introduction to the characters and Hornblower’s rise through the ranks, the fire ships is a tense sea battle (with a colossal scene with the ships in the fog) .

Ioan Gruffudd is intelligent and destined to be a unique James Bond I’m definite. With Robert Lindsey as a very Captain Picard Captain too! It’s really really favorable, seize it!

I could overlook the less than excellent acting, the less than realistic special effects and the blatant Christian proselytizing if this movie had a script that contained believable dialog and situations.

The movie starts out in a fashion remarkable like the fresh Starship Troopers from 1997, with the somewhat sarcastic faux television/webcast like commercials. There is an exception though, this time the Federation seems even more totalitarian than in 1997’s Starship Troopers.

After the faux commericials, we engage up action on a farming planet called Roku San, where the Mobile Infantry defends an ungratiful farming colony. Colonel Johnny Rico, reprised by Casper Van Dien, is the commander of the MI troopers at Roku San.

The abominable acting and unpleasant special effects begin off honest off the bat, and it doesn’t come by better. The bugs are so obviously blue screens, props and very awful computer effects. It really boggles the mind that in 2008 someone would actually place out something with special effects this poorly done.

Casper Van Dien tries only so-so to retract that feel of the new, and Jolene Blalock, as Captian Lola Beck a extinct friend/lover of Johnny Rico, seem to forget she’s not a Vulcan on Enterprise. Her acting was downright emotionless. Then the other star of the movie (I utilize the term ’star’ lightly.) is Boris Kodjoe, who plays General Dix Hauser, the unique appreciate interest of Capt. Beck.

The whole position was illogical and predictable. All I have to do is begin with the premise that Sky Marshal Anoke was somehow able to access the power generators on Roku San, thus shutting down the electric fence and letting the bugs into the scandalous. STARSHIP TROOPERS 3: MARAUDER is a teach to DVD movie based loosely on a world and characters created by Robert A. Heinlein in his classic sci-fi adventure unusual STARSHIP TROOPERS. While this movie is neither high budget nor high art, it is a very fascinating contrivance to use an evening at home. It is also a Great better follow on to the current STARSHIP TROOPERS movie than the simply poor second installment.

Casper Van Dien returns as our hero, Johnny Rico. His is joined by STAR Hasten broken-down Jolene Blalock as the rather well-formed, negate pilot, damsel-in-distress. The performances by these two are very scrumptious, and it is beneficial to look them both working again. They are joined by a very able supporting cast, all of whom add to the fun.

The special effects are a bit used and corny, but overall, they work impartial glowing for the humorous book style of the movie. The Bugs are aid, aloof trying to exterminate the humans, and we are trying honest as hard to exterminate them help. Tons of explosions, lots of gore, and our hero saves the day. Blooming distinguished what you want in a first-rate, primitive fashioned “B” movie.

And the best allotment of all, we finally, finally obtain what we have been waiting for: the Mech Suits!! They were everything I had always imagined, and more. What took you guys so long??? When I first rented BRIGADOON from the public library last spring, I immediately fell in treasure with it. Unbiased added the DVD to my collection yesterday. It is one of the most exquisite films I have ever seen. It is a 1954 film adaptation of the 1947 Broadway musical. The Lerner and Loewe accumulate is one of the greatest ever written for the stage (or hide) . The gargantuan cast includes Gene Kelly, Van Johnson, and Cyd Charisse. Although certainly not the greatest singers in the world, Kelly’s and Johnson’s singing is more than adequate and is really quite pleasing. Charisse’s singing affirm is dubbed for this film, and she works ample as well.

When Brigadoon made the transition from Broadway to Hollywood, a top-notch chunk of its glean was dispensed with in order to design room to highlight the dancing abilities of its stars. This is, in fact, where many people accumulate fault with this film; the lack of the rest of the Broadway win. To these people, I have this to say… —This movie is not the Broadway play. It is a **film adaptation.**— This is also the approved complaint about MGM’s “Reveal Boat” from 3 years earlier. Another approved complaint about “Brigadoon” is that it was obviously shot in soundstages on the MGM lot in Culver City instead of the highlands of Scotland. This was due to the fact that producers were working with smaller budgets than they had been fair 3 or 4 years earlier. This, coupled with the unpredictable weather in the British Isles, necesitated that the film be shot at the studio. This is also evident in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” from the same year. Although the sets are obviously painted backdrops, they are nicely done and work well. IMO, they do not demerit the film.

Brigadoon more than makes up for the missing songs by adding some spectacular dance numbers. “Heather on the Hill” is one of the most sweeping dance numbers I have ever seen in any film. Kelly’s and Charisse’s gracefulness really hits the state.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the DVD, with its lush color, definite characterize, and stereo sound. If you haven’t seen “Brigadoon,” you should seek it. At the very least for some of the greatest dance numbers you will ever search for.

Brigadoon is widely considered as one of Vincente Minnelli’s lesser achievements. MGM, like the other major studios, were finding themselves in somewhat dire financial straits due to competition from television and definite pieces of anti-trust legislation that loosened their monopolistic grip over the entertainment industry. When MGM pulled the plod on the notion of an “on status” shoot (they were well aware of Minnelli’s obsession with perfection and expected that he would go well over budget if given a free rein), the entire project became saddled with an image pickle. By 1954, movie audiences expected something more than fixed indoor sets and painted scenery, especially from a work so spot specific as Brigadoon.

Minnelli faced other obstacles. Ansco was a cheaper and somewhat improper colour processing system than Technicolor, which no doubt irritated his refined sensibilities. He also had to advance to terms with the recent demands of Cinemascope and corpulent stereophonic sound, with somewhat mixed results.

Even more troubling is that the choreography was in the hands of Gene Kelly, who seemed distinct to emphasize the dancing rather than musical element at the heart of Brigadoon. The two had worked wonderfully together on “An American in Paris”, but on the site of Brigadoon their artistic visions clashed. It is telling that Brigadoon was their last collaboration.

Critics in the 1950’s were also a better informed breed than they were 20 years earlier and they were lickety-split to pounce on obvious “inaccuracies”, such as the horrible blends of tartans, which cerainly would have made any Laird wince, and the suitability of grand of Mr. Kelly’s choreography; hardly Scottish by a long stretch.

Yet in spite of these encumberances, I fancy this film. The painted diaramas are in keeping with the preposterous nature of the storyline, and what glowing sets they are! Minnelli’s artistic flourishes are evident eveywhere, such as the substantial plantings of heather which must have caused a residence of fat employment for local florists. Minnelli”s outstanding contribution to American Film was his refined palette of colour schemes, and in Brigadoon his genius achieves its climax. Earn no mistake, Brigadoon is a feast for the eyes.

The music by Lerner and Loewe is favorable, with haunting melodies and stirring choruses. Cyd Charisse, always more distinguished for her dancing than her thespian skills, in Brigadoon achieves her finest hour, even though her singing mutter is dubbed. Gene Kelly’s type of acting is perhaps an acquired taste, but there is no denying his cat like grace and dazzling boyish grand looks.
On the whole, the imperfections of Brigadoon only gain it more endearing. It is the one musical I never tire of seeing over and over again.

A unbelievable, keen 1963 film rescued from dreadful, old prints and sad video transfers and made to survey - like Criterion’s equally outstanding refurbishment of Fellini’s “Juliet of the Spirits” - almost like a brand-new movie; as spruce and as shapely as I have ever seen it. Not everyone will “come by” what Jean-Luc Godard is up to with “Contempt”, and some will find it but detached not care for it - aesthetic enough. He never claimed to be making movies for every audience any more than he claimed to be making them for rarefied elites, nevertheless a enormous spectrum of us do understand and be pleased his artistic project (of which this is one sublime outcome), and if you can suspend for two hours the narrow, outmoded expectations Hollywood product has cultivated in many of us, that number may include you. Robert Stam’s alternate-channel audio commentary provides many racy insights regarding the significance and filmmaking innovations of “Contempt”, along with righteous analysis of the sources of the myth (in Homer and modern Italian literature) and the performances, and some information regarding how the movie came to be cast and produced, which goes a long scheme toward explaining why Godard made the movie he eventually made. “Contempt” may be Godard’s most “mature” film, but then art is not only about innovation, but also about mastery. If the performances are not always so subtle they are nevertheless wonderfully nuanced, including that of the mountainous director (and non-actor) Fritz Lang, and Brigitte Bardot - unruffled at the apogee of her Gallic voluptuousness - reveals a depth unimagined by those rapid to dismiss her bathtub sex kitten persona - not to mention, most of her legendarily splendid naked body, in Technicolor and CinemaScope. It’s as powerful about how things don’t work in a relationship as it is about how they don’t work (for the purposes of art) in the movie business, and is as relevant to both subjects today as forty years ago. The second disc supplements include spellbinding and delightful interviews (especially the conversation between Jean-Luc Godard and Fritz Lang), and a short subject about Bardot and the photographers who followed her around relentlessly (”Paparazzi”) that’s unprejudiced fun. Disc two also features the perfect antidote to today’s movie trailers that go on and on and spoil everything: the one for “Contempt” shows you images from the film but manages to shriek almost nothing about it! This was a home rush, Criterion - thank you, thank you, thank you!

No one has captured the extinguish of a relationship on film better than Godard in Contempt. In between the excrutiatingly moral scenes between Piccoli and Bardot are musings on the nature of cinema, Homer’s Odyssey, Godardian polemics and a practical treatise on the expend of color in film by Raoul Coutard. And those tracking shots of Godard! This is a terrific DVD - the image and color are top-notch, sound crystal certain. Another huge presentation from the Criterion Collection. But what I really appreciated was that on the disc’s menu hide there was a elephantine rendition of George Delerue’s graceful main theme, easily one of the most pretty motif’s ever written for film. Worth the effect of the DVD for that alone.

I have loved this film since I was 9! HIGH SPIRITS is a whimsical comedy-fantasy from the visionary director Neil Jordan starring a respectable cast.

Peter Plunkett (Peter O’Toole) is the owner of Castle Plunkett, a shaded castle place in the Irish countryside. In order to net the money-hungry Brogan family off his succor, he decides to advertise the castle as the most-haunted area on the Emerald Isle (with the hotel staff doubling as the spirits)!.

Among the cynical tourists that near are Jack (Steve Guttenberg) and his valium-guzzling wife Sharon (Beverly D’Angelo) ; a scientist of the paranormal (Martin Ferrero), his wife (Connie Booth) and their children; the chaste Brother Tony (Peter Gallagher) and the sexy Miranda (Jennifer Tilly) .

The “ghosts” are soon discovered to be fraudulent, thus enraging the Loyal ghosts of the castle who resolve to create a minute mischief for themselves! Jack finds himself falling in fancy with the elusive Mary Plunkett (Daryl Hannah), while Sharon is unwittingly courted by Mary’s husband, the tiresome Martin Brogan (Liam Neeson) .

Director Neil Jordan envisioned a “Midsummer Night’s Dream”-type atmosphere for this film with partner-swapping and people being seduced by other-worldly beings. However, producers soon had other things in mind and significantly re-edited the movie to their possess vision. Cast members came from the dwelling complaining that the producers had enfuriated Jordan with their antics, forcing him to scramble off the project.

However, the film is a constant delight, and this long-awaited DVD release will surely be relished by fans of the film.

Despite the critics views, I appreciate this movie…. Peter O’Toole is improbable as a titled Irishman trying to retain his family castle by infesting it with home-made ghosts (the castle staff) to attract an international, phantom-following clietele. A bickering couple from America (Steve Guttenberg and Beverly D’Angelo) witness that there really are authentic ghostly denizens of the castle (Liam Neeson and Daryl Hannah— he murdered her 200 years before in a fit of jealous passion, and they are doomed repeatedly to reenact the event) — Steve Guttenberg falls for Daryl, and Liam is randy for Beverly D’Angelo. Peter O’Toole’s relationship with his dear worn deceased Dad– astounding… Racy(at times hilarious!), bewitching and original; A Might-Have-Been-Great, but peaceful Method Tantalizing movie— and one I was lucky enough to regain on video!

Severin’s release of The Beast in Set was worthy in that they found the only complete print in a basement of a condemned porno theater outside Bologna. So here it is, the first time ever this is presented on DVD anywhere in the world. With that special presentation, what are you exactly in for?

Without stating the positive, the film is a mess. But thats where the fun begins. There is no true telling of what is happening, but one might surmise some of the possibilities. Ultimately this film is riding the coattails of two other films: The Beast (La Bete) and Star Wars. How you might imagine to combine these two films into one heap of psuedo-science-fiction with a touch of pornography? Its not easy, and watching this is not very easy either.

The film is basically about Captain Larry (Vassili Karis) who, after beating up his enemy and having hot sex, discovers the mysterious energy force called Antalium, which is, evidently is a sexual energy. He sets up his team complete with Sirpa Lane (from the unusual La Bete) who all go to a planet to accumulate more of this stuff. There they meet irregular things, like horses having sex, cardboard aliens, phony light-sabers and a shocking bearded man who controls it all. After they partake in a dinner, an orgy starts to emerge and soon everyone is having a mammoth time. The stout hairy man we soon finds out is a Satyr and he is ready to place out, specifically to Sirpa.

There are hardcore scenes in this version, but its really not erotic or sexually curious. While the film is already cut-up to an incomprehensible mess, the hardcore footage does not succor matters powerful either. Severin also released a standard unrated version sans the hard scenes if that is not your bag.The Beast in Situation (Unrated Version)

But this film is not meant to be high art. The best blueprint to appreciate such a film is with your friends laughing at it over some drinks and whatever else that may serve. Cause you will need abet after you perceive this.

My 3 stars is not a recommendation (in fact I really would not recommend it to anyone) nor is it on the quality of the film itself. But that its a lost film that has advance to us again and it looks very safe, all things considered. My rating is also simply that its a fun movie and should be taken as such. I fancy Severin’s releases and glimpse forward to them bringing out these dingy films from beneath the surface so modern audiences can know about them as they only add to the culture and history of film.

I had seen “The Beast” ( La Bete’) and decided to give this a try. I actually liked the fresh as it had a obliging myth. This one has a narrative, but it is somewhat flimsy. I was reminded of “Flesh Gordon” while watching this. The EFX are hokie to say the least. There are some flashbacks from the unique, in particular the Horses doing their thing. It is explicit and thus the XXX rating. I would recommend renting it, if possible, before buying. Charlie S.
