I’m glad to have this film on DVD after all this time! This movie takes you all around the world, from the beauty of the Fiji Islands to the crackpot idea of surfing the bear infested Alaskan coastline and beyond. I’ve been sharing this film with friends for years, and have been writing New Line Home Video for the past 6 years *begging* them to release this title on disc. Monterey Home Video seemed to have acquired the rights, and although I do give them kudos for coming up to plate with my request, I am disappointed that the film is only presented in full-screen mode with a stereo soundtrack. More importantly, the DVD transfer is rather poor for a modern-day DVD release. It pains me to not give this review five stars, it’s such an incredible film, but this DVD release was a bit of a disappointment.

For those who wish to see another surf video based in the 60’s, you should look elsewhere. Have no illusions, this is a modern-day “Endless Summer”. Bruce Brown did a tremendous job putting together a surfing adventure which holds your interest from one end of the globe to the other. Balancing a number of today’s different surf styles, we’re offered everything from short boards to long boards to power surfing. The film is enriched with a wide variety of music, coupled with incredibly clear and well positioned camera shots. Add some of the best surfers in the world and you’ve got a 5 star surf film.

After viewing many of the other hundreds of surf video’s out there, I still find myself coming back to this one. I especially enjoy the light humor through out the film. Still yet, I’m continually impressed with the top quality camera work and editing.

After a string of movies set in Europe, Woody Allen triumphantly returns to his beloved New York for Whatever Works. Since Allen releases a new film each year, it’s hit-or-miss with him (rightfully so). This film got less-than-enthusiastic reviews and, as such, I wasn’t expecting much from it…But the critics really misrepresented this film, as this is one of Woody’s best comedies.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Whatever Works! Click Here

Larry David (of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame) plays Boris Yellnikoff, a caustic, retired physicist who walks with a limp due to a failed suicide attempt. Now, Boris teaches chess to “zombie-minded imbeciles.” Evan Rachel Wood plays Melodie, a naïve runaway from Mississippi, who stumbles into Boris’ life…Against all odds, the two marry and Melodie’s parents (played wonderfully by Patricia Clarkson and Ed Begley, Jr.) both, separately, find her.

I’m not familiar with Larry David’s previous work, so I don’t know how much of this performance carries over from his own persona; but David is playing the Woody Allen role here to perfection. David perfectly captures the neurotic, arrogant genius that is Boris and recites Allen’s dialogue as if it comes straight from his own thoughts. Of course, this is a film filled with great performances as can be expected from a film by Woody Allen. Begley, Jr. is particularly surprising as Melodie’s father…And while some may not be too impressed by Wood’s performance as Melodie, she’s very convincing and cute.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Whatever Works! Click Here

This is truthfully one of Allen’s best comedies and an all-around great film. The dialogue here is typical, philosophical, sarcastic Allen…But it doesn’t just elicit chuckles, but full-on, laugh-out-loud laughter. It’s a very intelligent film that not ONLY ranks as one of Allen’s best comedies, but one of his best films. I don’t see how this film has not received the amount of praise it deserves, because I clearly saw something all the critic’s didn’t. While the past few years have shown a return to form for Allen, this film stands as a terrific achievement in the Allen catalogue. It’s quite honestly one of the best films I’ve seen this year and it’s not to be missed.

GRADE: A

I will rank this film in my top five Woody Allen films which include: Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Interiors,

and Sleeper.

Laughed out loud for many of the segments and the script. Perfect cure on a rainy day.

Thank you Woody Allen !

My 2 1/2 year old will watch this over and over. He sings the songs and talks about the firemen. Most importantly, it teaches him to be cautious of doing things that could cause a fire, like playing with matches.

The DVD will auto play, there is no advertising in the beginning so I don’t have to stand for 5 minutes before I can start it, like the Sesame Street ones.

This is nearly an hour long, not 30 minutes like most. For me that’s great because I don’t have to start it over before he falls asleep. Well worth the price.

Great movie for entertainment and teaches the kids about fire safety too.

Wow - well, having all the episodes on one DVD is helpful as it gives you a chance to really study them. John Lurie’s unique, subtle, sophisticated, and nearly indescribable brand of humour is present in each one. The convenience of DVD, combined with crisp sound and image quality and the completeness of this package are easily enough to justify this purchase alone. What really made it for me though, was having a separate audio track of Lurie’s own commentary through each episode. I found myself watching an episode and then watching the same one again immediately following, this time while listening to Lurie. His commentary is often humorous, but at times often revealing of himself as an artist and person, not to mention the technical insights of the production of the show - its as if he’s sitting in the room with you while you watch it. The disc closes with Lurie’s fabulous “Big Heart” video with the Lounge Lizards which I hadn’t seen since VH1’s old “New Visions” show in the late 80’s.

John Lurie is surely one of the most gifted, and soulful artists of the 80’s and 90’s. Thank you John, for sharing your humour and perspective with all of us…please do more episodes…

. . . that is both stupid as hell and screamingly funny. The Dennis Hopper episodes are the best.

In actual fact, whether or not Fishing With John is really funny at all, life is beautiful.

“Hunter X Hunter Volume 4″ is the last volume of the shortish anime series, and it’s also drastically different from the entire storyline that precedes it. Not only is it far darker and bloodier, but Kurapika and his quest for revenge become the center of attention rather than the goofy and less developed Gon — and it’s a brilliant piece of work, if a rather unsatisfying end.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hunter X Hunter, Vol. 4! Click Here

On a trip back to Whale Island, Gon and Killua learn of a box that Gon’s father left for him — and among the contents is a video game memory card with the dangerous, infamously rare “Greed Island” on it. The boys immediately start trying to raise money on internet auctions and casinos, as they make their way to Yorknew City. Oh, and Leorio rejoins them for the time being.

Meanwhile, Kurapika has taken on a job as one of several Hunter bodyguards for a psychic Mafia girl, who is planning to attend the auction in Yorknew City. The Phantom Troupe is also interested in the Mafia’s booty (not sure why), and the girl that Kurapika and his new compatriots are guarding. With Hisoka’s help, Kurapika plans to find and kill the Spiders with his new power — a series of deadly nen chains.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hunter X Hunter, Vol. 4! Click Here

But when the auction items vanish from the vault, Kurapika ends up facing the first of the Phantom Troupe — but they are soon as bent on vengeance as he. Worse, his young friends have become enmeshed in the Troupe’s web.

Leech infestations, impalements, flesh-shredding punches, shattered bones, a man slowly eaten alive, and Kurapika’s heart-squishing chain — “Hunter X Hunter Volume 4″ is a pretty gruesome affair. This is especially true because the entire arc really revolves around Kurapika’s quest for revenge — sure, there’s some fluffy subplots about Gon and Killua selling stuff on the Web, but they pale by comparison.

And the writers wrap the entire storyline in a murky cloak, which seems to be half mob thriller and half dark coming-of-age. They also weave in some truly astonishing fight scenes (a multi-person fight against nen ninjas) and bleakly intricate thriller storylines (Gon and Killua’s capture by the Spiders); viewers also get some glimpses of the heretofore unknown Phantom Troupe, who are terrifying in their sheer power.

Even the animators seemed to polish their work further, with some hauntingly shadowed, purple-toned images that are both beautiful and horrible — the bloody ballet between Kurapika and his enemy, or the sociopathic Chrollo “conducting” terrorist attacks. The one problem would probably be that though the anime series ended here, it leaves several plot threads hanging loose. The story was picked up in some OVA episodes, but for the moment this is it.

These episodes also flesh out Kurapika into the best-rounded character of the series, as well as a truly tragic figure. He’s a gentle, peaceful young man who has intentionally made himself into the ultimate nen fighter, despite his hatred of death and blood. His devastation after he kills for the first time is heartbreaking. And we see more of the iron-clad determination and resourcefulness of Gon and Killua, even in the worst circumstances.

There are also a new round of well-rounded, intricate supporting characters. Kurapika’s ugly-but-kind friend Melody is a particular standout, and the Phantom Troupe turns out to have their own internal loyalties and personal ties. Their leader’s doe eyes are rather freaky, though.

“Hunter X Hunter Volume 4″ is a brilliant ending to a previously solid and slow-moving series, with a tragic edge and plenty of action. A dark affair, but a great one.

Some people seem to think that Vol. 4 ends up splitting off into a completely different series that the first 3/4. I happen to think it is just the evolution of a truly great series in fact, it was this entire arc that got me into Hunter x Hunter at a time when I recall seeing the animation and, being spoiled by the latest technologies, overlooked this truly incredible story AND (now that I’ve come to appreciate it) animation. I will be getting this the second it is released. Personally, I think they need to give the Spiders their own series!

The Lost Continent/The Reptile is available for streaming or downloading.

I first stayed up to watch the Lost Continent when I was a kid. Always a fan of Hammer films, The Lost Continent is probably my favourite of all. Repeated viewings since have done nothing to diminish the film, if anything they have enhanced it. It is difficult to put this film into any single genre, it probably falls under a combination of action/fantasy/horror/sci fi.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Lost Continent/The Reptile! Click Here

It is based on the Dennis Wheatley novel Uncharted Seas, although there are substantial and necessary plot revisions in the film.

The story is set on a rust bucket tramp steamer - the SS Corita, carrying an illegal cargo of high explosive, a dubious collection of passengers, and helmed by a moody, sarcastic captain - a typically strong performance from Eric Porter. Supported by a solid cast, this really makes the film tick.

Among the passengers, Hildegard Knef is convincing as the wife of an exiled dictator, whom she is fleeing from. Tony Beckley plays the drunken playboy Basil. Nigel Stock plays a doctor fleeing from his dubious past, with his daughter in tow. Benito Carruthers plays a thug, sent after Knef’s character. Among the crew is Neil McCallum as the pious Chief Engineer, Reg Lye as the helmsman, and Hammer regular Michael Ripper as the crew’s barrackroom lawyer. The first half of the film sees the interaction of passengers and crew, the ship get damaged during a hurricane, a mutiny, and the abandoning of the ship. Later some of the crew and passengers return to the ship and this sees the second half of the film where they encounter man eating seaweed, a graveyard of ships, gigantic crustaceans and celapods, and the survivors of the previous shipwrecks, ruled over by the Spanish Inquisition.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Lost Continent/The Reptile! Click Here

The dvd release has 8 mins of unreleased footage which enhances and fleshes out the film nicely, making it a more complete viewing experience.

Despite its age, the film creates a truly original and imaginative fantasy setting, with its yellow skies, swirling mists, and oceans of voracious seaweed. Hammer imported the top SFX guys from Disney for this, one of their most expensive films, to give it its unique and original look. Enhancing this is the superb psychedelic musical score of Gerard Schurmann, coupled with the great title track, performed by The Peddlers.

For sheer movie originality and escapism, this one hits the spot. Sit back and let it take you away to a vivid and frightening world of imagination, with one of the most original movie scores ever, to accompany you on the way. Simply superb.

The Reptile is one of Hammer’s lesser known outings and is set in the English countryside. A series of mysterious and unpleasant deaths happen around a mansion, inhabited a Doctor of Theology and his mysterious daughter.

Noel Willman is the academic and his daughter is played by none other than Jacqueline Pearce who played Servalan in Blake’s 7. Hammer regular, Michael Ripper appears as one of the locals, as does John Laurie, known to millions as Private Fraser from Dad’s Army.

Not quite in the league of The Lost Continent, The Reptile is, nonetheless, a very watchable and suspense filled film. Plays a great supporting role to The Lost Continent.

There really is no logical reason for packing “The Lost Continent” and “The Reptile” together was you get beyond the fact they are both Hammer films produced two years apart. After all, they are set in different centuries on different continents and to not have an actor or monster in common. “The Reptile” was filmed on the same lot as “The Plague of the Zombies,” so that could have made sense as a pairing, but logic does not appear to be the rationale here. I mean, “The Reptile” was part of a double-bill with “Rasputin, the Mad Monk,” which does not make a whole lot of sense either. However, this is really a moot point because I picked up this set because I wanted “The Lost Continent,” a B-movie that made an impression on me when I was a kid and saw it in the theater. It may well have been the first Hammer movie I ever saw, because it was not until we returned to the United States that I became familiar with all those Dracula and Frankenstein movies with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing (better known today for bookending the “Star Wars” movies).

After a sappy theme song that makes is sound like this is some sort of a romance and a strange funeral aboard a ship sailing through a bunch of miniatures, we go back to the beginning with the rust bucket of a tub fleeing a third world port ahead of the authorities. Captain Lansen (Eric Porter) is in a desperate situation, both financially and legally, and this appears to be the case for all of the rest of the passengers onboard. However, there is a bigger problem on board in terms of the illegal cargo, which is this stuff that explodes when it comes in contact with water, which is a major concern when you are suddenly in a leaky ship in the middle of a violent storm at sea. Eventually we end up in the Sargasso Sea and a 1960s version of the Bermuda Triangle of lost ships. There the crew encounter giant creatures and a Spanish galleon.

Of course I want to say that “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition,” but since you see conquistadors in the tracking shot that opens the narrative as we see a funeral being conducted aboard the ship, it is not that unexpected. It is Sarah (Dana Gillespie), the buxom wench walking on the killer kelp courtesy of snowshoes and a harnessed pair of balloons that is the signature image of the film.

With the virtue of several decades worth of hindsight, I think what made “The Lost Continent” work for me are the leads, because Porter and Neff neither look nor act like they are making a bad B movie. I have since since Porter in the original BBC production of “The Forsyte Saga,” so clearly this was a step down for him, but you would never tell it from watching him. As Eva Peters, Hildegard Neff (which should actually be Knef), had played Trilby in a version of “Svengali” a decade earlier, and makes the most out of having left her ingenue days behind her. These are a couple of world weary people, so when they end up dealing with killer kelp, giant monsters, and fanatical priests, there is a dogmatic pragmatism that comes into play. I also have fond thoughts for Patrick (Jimmy Hanley), the bartender, not just because I find it hard to believe this tub has a bartender, but more importantly because you have to like a guy who refuses to abandon ship just because everybody else on board has done so. The special feature on Hammer films included shows several similar films about “Lands Before Time” that would have made more sense for pairing up in this DVD set, but enough of beating that dead horse.

For me “The Reptile” has a problelm with the title giving away the deep dark secret as to who is killing people in this remote little English town in Cornwall. There should be more of a “what the hell is going on here?” sense to the proceedings in this Gothic horror story. Captain Harry Spalding (Ray Barrett) inherits a cottage after this brother is murdered and moves in with his wife Valerie (Jennifer Daniel), where they discover that several locals have died because of mysterious snake bites. Dr. Franklyn (Noel Willman) keeps telling the Spaldings to leave and to leave his daughter Anna (Jacqueline Pearce) alone. Along with the information that the doctor was studying a snake cult in Borneo allows you to connect the dots in this one. The local eccentrics are Tom Bailey (Michael Ripper) and Mad Peter Crockett (John Laurie), the only ones in the village not to treat the newcomers like the plague. Again, if the title did not give away the game I might have enjoyed this one better, because everytime somebody wonders what’s going on I thought: “Gee, do you think it mgiht be The Reptile?” There is a short documentary, narrated by Olvier Reed no less, focusing on the lady vampires in the Hammer films, which , of course, means it never talks about “The Reptile.” To be fair, there is an obvious connection after the fact, but the documentary does make you wish you had seen any of those movies rather than this one.

While the previous review was correct that the special features, remastering, audio and video are identical in this new release there are a couple of things this version of the Prisoner Megaset has that others don’t, but should have had from the get go. The first advantage is this collection has the disk collected in ten slim line cases, which cuts down on your shelf space considerably compared to previous releases and their full sized DVD cases. Also this release has a pretty extensive PRINTED episode guide booklet that gives more than just a synopsis. You also get a little history of the making of that episode. Another extra is a fold out of the classic village map.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Prisoner: The Complete Series Megaset! Click Here

Now these extras may not be worth the double dipping for those who already bought the previous sets, but for those who never took the plunge now is the time. Not only do you get the great features from the original set, but also stuff you can read and enjoy without having to put a disk in your player. I give the higher rating for this set, which is a more complete and more compact set than all the rest (minus one for not getting it right the first time).

Let’s say you’re a business that already has made a wonderful “40th Anniversary Version” of a DVD set with all the bells and whistles… now why should you then be allowed to create a different version of the same thing only a few years later?

A&E should be ashamed of themselves for doing what everyone lately is now doing: they’ve realized that (most) of the DVD buying public will buy ANYTHING if you re-package it as a “Special Collection,” or a “Ultimate Collection,” “Director’s Cut,” “Unrated Cut” or “Extended Cut.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Prisoner: The Complete Series Megaset! Click Here

But in the case of “The Prisoner: The Complete Series Megaset (Collector’s Edition),” we are seeing the “40th Anniversary Set”, just with new packaging.

I have been surfing around as of late and have found NOTHING to describe to me what’s included in the “new” package.

Any new interviews? I don’t know.

Any new lost footage? I don’t know.

Any kind of newer extras not on the “Anniversary version”? I don’t know.

Any other information anywhere online about what’s on it at all? I don’t know.

Remastered? They were the first time around.

Blu-Ray? Yes, but this could have been done with the same package.

You see where I’m going here. To quote the A&E website, who is also selling it, they are only saying “Within this complete 17-episode set, all is revealed. Or is it?”

Now what kind of garbagey pap is that? What’s the technical end? What’s included that is different from what’s already out there? It makes me wonder why they even needed to remake a “Collector’s Set” in the first place.

It is essentially the “40th Anniversary” DVD box set, just repackaged with a new set of covers. As far as I can see from the item descriptions of both sets IT’S THE SAME ITEM THEY SOLD TO US A FEW YEARS BACK.

To be honest, I was happy with that set as it fed my obsession, and I thought there was nowhere else to go with it. SEE FOR YOURSELF!…

Same running time, same number of discs!

This only leads me to CONCLUDE that they are neither adding nor subtracting anything to this release except to repackage a horse that’s been in the corral for over 3 years. But the question remains: Why are they doing this?

Well, it’s simple: to sell DVD sets to lots of naive customers who didn’t know the “Anniversary Set” exists and then buy essentially the SAME ITEM at a higher price!

Used box sets of the “40th” are pretty cheap right now, so why buy the redesigned package? - except to make A&E a few dollars more. Oh, and it’s no small coincidence that they are releasing it about the same time as the upcoming AMC series “Prisoner” reboot.

This is sad, and once again, A&E should be ashamed of themselves.

And, to sidebar a moment about that new series…

Now, even though Ian McKellen has been chosen to play Number Two (and that’s okay), how can anyone justify American actor Jim Caviezel as Number Six when we all know this was a British actor’s dream role?

I really can’t really name a movie or show he’s been in where he impressed me EXCEPT for his performance in “Frequency,” which according to the IMDB website, is all he’s ever done in the sci-fi realm.

I guess I’m picky when it comes to my choice of The Prisoner, because you would think they’d put someone in there with a backbone - and DOESN’T CRY IN EVERY SINGLE ROLE HE’S BEEN IN. This potentially sounds HORRIBLE.

I say give me Clive Owen, he seems sullen enough, and he proved to me he could tackle the complexities of sci-fi in his dazzling role in “Children of Men.”

(Back to the DVD review, as I’m digressing too much here… but to get a bit personal now…)

Cash is king and AMC and A&E are warming their collective hands over the bones of the highly-protective-of-the-series Patrick McGoohan, whom they waited patiently until he died so that they could then start mining his show that he created and wanted left untouched.

And to be honest, there are more than a few of us who’d also like to leave this kept pure as well. No, we didn’t need a remake or a reboot, and there are SO many people I know who’ve asked why do it at all?

The release of this DVD set only goes to show me integrity, like clothing, can be shed for the right price, and AMC and A&E will NEVER receive another consumer dollar from ME.

Once again, since there are no technical details available anywhere except from what I found on this very website, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to assume that it’s the same set just re-packged to deceive people, and because of that I’m giving this one star.

THERE IS NO INFORMATION AVAILABLE ABOUT WHAT’S ON IT THAT’S NEW, so why award a company clearly out for profit?

For the last time, and I’ll be honest, it won’t be the last time for me… A&E should BE ASHAMED OF ITSELF for doing this.

I’m going to tell everyone I know to watch out for this deception AND NOT BUY THIS SET until I mysteriously vanish or this review is deleted, and since I’m the first one here to voice my dissention, I’ll be on some faraway island soon enough, assigned a number, and then be forced to watch Jim Caviezel cry.

Thanks for reading, and before I mysteriously die or vanish, read my other reviews and find out the truth for yoursel================================

I love futurama and already have the old box sets, but ordered this since I had slacked off on buying the features and this was not much more money than buying them. Great bargain price, really. My only beef is that when it arrived, all the discs were out of their slots, some with visible damage (hopefully doesnt effect playback, but now i need to check them all quickly so i can hopefully exchange if some of the discs are unplayable). Figured this was worth a mention though as it reminds me of the halo 3 debacle (discs damaged during shipping in special edition cases that microsoft ended up offering to replace). Im hoping mine all play fine, but if not id hope that microsoft’s example would be followed.

I had the impression that this was a little box with a bunch of dvd’s in sleeves with a holographic image on the outsides that make it look like Bender’s head is in a tank. So I was surprised to find a very large box on my doorstep. The pic you are looking at is a box with clear windows and Bender’s ‘real-sized’ head is in there! Awesome! You open a hatch in the back of his head and all the dvd’s are stacked vertically in grooves. It’s a fantastic and fun concept. I feel like I got so much more than I bargained for since the head is a fun display piece.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Futurama: The Complete Collection! Click Here

Though here’s the reason for the 4 stars: The hatch is sort of hard to open… though I suppose it won’t flop open on it’s own. My real issue is with the dvd rack once you open Bender’s hatch. They are spaced very close together in those grooves AND it’s kind of annoying to get the dvd lined up quite right when pushing it back in it’s right slot. You have to really focus to make sure you are sliding it in right. Also, it’s kind of hard to pull out the disks by holding them on the edge. You can, but just another 1/4″ would have been nice. It makes you want to pinch the dvd on the flat parts, which leads to smudges. Also, you can’t see what dvd’s you are grabbing until you pull it out a little to check. They come stacked in order, so you just count down til you get to the right one. A directory on the inside of that hatch would be nice, in fact I’m going to make one myself.

So the content is definitely 5 stars, anyone considering this already knows that. The head as a collector’s item is way fun. The head as a dvd holder is a bit difficult though. I really like opening up Bender to pick out a disc, but could definitely see storing these dvd’s in a sleeved case in the future. Another reason I’d do that is because the box bender came in makes a fun display too since it makes it look like his head is in a tank of water. So the last thing you’d want to do to get to an episode is to open the box, pull out Bender, fumble to pry open Bender, count down to which one you want and try not to scuff it while pulling it out….repeat.

Note to fox, it would be great if you could open the hatch by pressing Bender’s antenna, that’s how he activates things on the show. It would also be great if when you pressed on the antenna you got a nice ‘bit my shiny metal @#$’ or any other Benderisms.

Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Novel, Emily of New Moon is the brilliant story of a free-spirited orphaned girl who’s vivid imagination, passionto write, and romantic nature clash with her strict adoptive family.

I am an avid fan of period TV and movies so, when I stumbled on this show on cable while in my teens it was almost a given that I was going to enjoy it. But I had know idea then what a deep impression it would leave on me. I had heard of L.M. Montgomery and read Anne of Green Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea but had never heard of the Emily books so the series was completely new to me. and I was hooked, I watched as often as I could but the trouble was that the show’s time slot Kept changing with the result being that I often missed out, which was annoying because the show quickly became my favorite. Everything about it was wonderful, the casting/acting, the costumes and sets, the music especially the music. in short for me it was TV bliss. It wasn’t all bad really, withdrawl symtoms from missing the show lead me to read the books Emily of New Moon (Emily Novels) Emily Climbs (Emily Novels) and Emily’s Quest (Emily Novels) which to this day are at the top of my list of The Best Books Ever. Eventually I lost track of the show completely, and never got to see the last episodes, but I never forgot about it. and thought about the show often. If you’ve seen and enjoyed the Anne of Green Gables movies Anne of Green Gables: The Collection or perhaps the long running Avonlea series Road to Avonlea Season 1 Road to Avonlea Season 2 Road to Avonlea Season 3 - Spin-off from Anne of Green Gables Road to Avonlea Season 4 Road to Avonlea Season 5 - Spin-off from Anne of Green Gables Road to Avonlea Season 6 - Spin-off from Anne of Green Gables Road to Avonlea: The Complete Seventh Volume Emily is along the same lines but darker in tone with a slightly gothic feel. Season one chronicles the first year of Emily’s life at New Moon Farm, after the death of her father. As she battles and begins to win over spartan Aunt Elisabeth, brings light and laughter into the sheltered life of fragile, sweet Aunt Laura and finds a kindred spirit in cousin Jimmy who is anything but simple minded. Emily also finds out where the gift of her Second sight comes from. We also meet llse Burnley, Perry Miller, and Teddy Kent. who will play important roles in the rest of Emily’s life, each in their own way.

Like all book to Screen adeptations the series has it’s detractors. some think that to many liberties were taken and that as the show went on it drifted further and further from the books. some of this is true, there where a lot of changes and additions not in the original meterial, but in my opinion these did not hurt the series but improved it. If the books had been followed exactly, I don’t think the series would have survived long.

Over the years, I had lost hope that this wonderful but little known show would be released on dvd, so I’m overjoyed that Echo Bridge Entertainment has done so, and I can only hope that there are plans to release the next three season’s. I can’t recommend this series highly enough.

My wife and I stumbled onto the Emily of New Moon television series on Georgia Public Television and loved it instantly. I’m not sure that we were able to catch every episode during its entire run but even if we had I would never regret buying every episode of every season again. Since that initial exposure to Emily, we’ve already bought almost every book L. M. Montgomery wrote. And, when Amazon sent me an e-mail about the DVD of Season One, I couldn’t order or get it fast enough. It was as if a long lost friend had been found again. We’re now on our second viewing of it in a week. Casting of the central characters couldn’t have been better and the story lines are superb. While some have lamented the spirits who often visited Emily, they miss the point that, above all, this is a character study of a young, imaginative, and creative mind. When I was Emily’s age, I must confess that thoughts of such mysterious beings were within the fold of my imagination as well. Today, as a 68 year old retired judge and having lost the capacity myself, I delight now in reviving such lucidity of imagination, albeit if only vicariously through Emily’s eyes. If you love good, clean, family entertainment and can give yourself up to enjoying this as an enchanting period piece of life on Prince Edward Island at or about the turn of the last century, this DVD set will be a treasured jewel. And, at the offered price, you won’t find so much quality entertainment anywhere at multiples of the price.

There’s really not a lot of original, un-cliched vampire television and/or movies out there. Your best bet is anime.

One good example of this is “Black Blood Brothers,” an all-too-short anime that spins up several kinds of vampires — good, bad, and creepy ones. Gorgeous art, a likable lead vampire, and a very unique mythology — and while the first couple episodes are decent but not outstanding, the story starts to really bloom when the bad-guy vampires enter the scene. Too bad it ended WAY prematurely.

Two vampires — powerful Jiro and his little brother Kotaro — are stowing away on a Chinese ship on their way to Japan. Their destination: the Safe Zone, where vampires and humans are allowed to coexist.

But then a firefight breaks out on board between some immigrant vampires and an anti-vampire military squad, and Jiro has no choice but to get involved. Afterwards they are helped by a Company worker named Mimiko — but things get nasty when the military shows up again. And then Jiro learns that his little brother and Mimiko are with the immigrant vampires — and one of them is a Kowloon Child, the most lethal and contagious form of vampire. And it’s headed for the Safe Zone.

Unfortunately this battle isn’t the last one Jiro must face. More vampires are attacking them, and some old acquaintances of Jiro’s are involved — including the malignant Cassa, a former companion of his who betrayed him and his long-dead lover. As more Kowloon Children rise in the city, Mimiko starts doing research on something called the “eleventh yard,” which is somehow key to the future of the Kowloon Children (and in turn, to everybody else as well).

As the secret of the eleventh yard is finally revealed — along with Cass’s secret plan — Jiro must deal with the shadows of his past as the Kowloon threat becomes critical. Even more striking, the truth behind his brother’s very existence is finally revealed.

“Black Blood Brothers” spends a minimum of time setting up its mythology — you get to see what’s going on through brief flashbacks and references to the past, such as Jiro’s grief-filled battle with Cassa in the previous war. But it’s an interesting one — lots of different breeds of vampires, with different powers, weaknesses, and histories. Definitely different from the usual Dracula copies or bad White Wolf ripoffs, and a lot of thought has clearly been put into it.

And “Black Blood Brothers” is a great blend of mild horror and solid action. There are some mild horror scenes — like Jiro staggering out of the water with all his flesh dissolved — but most of it is bullet-dodging, some vampiric duels, and misty flashbacks to Jiro’s past. And in the second half of the series, the action and horror start amping up in a slow build to the clima, including the clever twist of having Kowloon blood causing mass infection.

But it has some softer edges too — there are flashbacks to Jiro’s tender relationship to the dead Alice, as well as a cute budding relationship with Mimiko (including some rather erotic feeding scenes. And there’s some distinctly tongue-in-cheek comedy as well, such as the “virgin’s blood” scene, Kotaro being punished via being flung around the ship, and Jiro’s distinctly upbeat, cheerful attitude. Not very vampire-like.

It’s also worth noting that the artwork is simply stunning. If you can get past Jiro’s big red Pilgrim hat, then the noir atmosphere and sharp, colourful, detailed artwork are astounding. And they do a pretty amazing job with the vampire battles — the opening scene, a flashback to Jiro fighting an old friend-turned-enemy, is absolutely stunning.

Jiro is a likable vampire protagonist — despite being deadly and rather tragic at times, and occasionally whomping his brother on the head, he can also be funny, goofy or affectionate. Despite his tragic past, he doesn’t go all emo on us, and he has outbursts of all-too-human emotion (”You’re DEAD!” he yells at an ally who messed up their travel plans) that make him very likable.

Kotaro isn’t quite as endearing, primarily because he’s a spunky little kid. It’s almost impossible not to make them annoying, but he does have some endearing moments. And though she seems rather irritable at first, Mimiko makes an excellent potential love interest for Jiro. Cassa is a deliciously nasty piece of work, and many of the supporting vampires — the enigmatic child-king Sei, the delightfully sociopathic Clock, and the traumatized Kelly — are wonderfully detailed.

The biggest problem with the series? Well, while the immediate threat is dealt with, several plot threads are still sort of hanging at the end. It felt like there was a second season planned, but which was never made.

Despite its lack of a “real” ending, the “Black Blood Brothers” series is a solid anime series — it has a delightful balance of blood, vampires, laughs and plenty of action. Definitely worth checking out.

BLACK BLOOD BROTHERS BOX SET was on sale at Amazon, so after reading the reviews and watching the clip I thought I’d give it a try.

The box set has three DVDs with 4 episodes on each DVD and is the complete BLACK BLOOD BROTHERS series.

The anime series is about a cool vampire named Jiro and his little brother Kotaro who make their way to a place called the “Special Zone,” where humans and vampires live together in peace. They meet up with a vampire and human negotiator named Mimiko, who’s a human, and she helps them along the way. Anyway, there’s a sect of vampires called the Kowloon (koo-lawn) Children who are rabid, evil vampires and they want to destroy the “Special Zone” by infecting everyone with their tainted blood. So Jiro has to join forces with the good vampires and the humans to help defeat the Kowloon Children.

I found the series really riveting with an interesting storyline, endearing characters, great action scenes, and the animation is well drawn. The English voice overs are really good too as each actor matches the character he/she is portraying, but there’s an option to play the original Japanese language track with English sub-titles.

At first, I found the character of Kotaro a little annoying but he grew on me after a couple of episodes.

If you like anime and are looking for a complete series that’s cool, has great action, and endearing characters, I would definitely recommend the BLACK BLOOD BROTHERS BOX SET. Hopefully, there will be another season/series that continues on with the storyline and we get more of Jiro, Kotaro and Mimiko.
