Great Book–Interesting, Practical, Biblical
I was so impressed with this book because of the many practical and Biblical suggestions contained in it. I highly recommend this to anyone! I found myself taking notes as I read to make a list of specific things I want to do right away to become a “better me.” I have been a born-again Christian for 47 years of my 54 and still feel like I learned much from reading this book.
I was also relieved to find it wasn’t at all boring. A few chapters in the beginning went slow for me because they didn’t really apply to my life, but others may find them to be very useful and helpful. I truly enjoyed reading this book in less than a week. I can honestly say there was nothing in it that I disagreed with.
I haven’t read many self-help books, but this one is GREAT! I was very encouraged by some of the things he mentioned such as:
1) Keep stretching because my best days are yet to come. Your best days are not behind you, they’re in front of you. (I am 54 so this is very encouraging to me)
2) Develop a Habit of Happiness. Choose to put a positive spin on things and be happy-even in bad circumstances.
3) Remember who you are and act accordingly–child of God Almighty, redeemed, talented, creative, have potential to fulfill your destiny.
4) Find work you are passionate about.
5) Relationships are more important than accomplishments. Build others up–compliment someone each day. Be the head cheerleader and encourager for your spouse.
6) Leave places better off than they were before I came by.
7) Celebrate other people’s victories.
Keep a running record of the good things God has done for you.
9) Keep a tender conscience by listening to and obeying the small voice that nudges you to do or not to do something so you can keep hearing God’s voice.
10) Plan on a long and healthy life!
11) Keep a song of praise in your heart all through the day.
12) Smile on purpose.
13) Believe expecting–put actions with your faith.
Although I knew some of these things and even used to do them at one time, it was good to be reminded of them. My husband was right when he said Joel uses good illustrations. I’m pretty sure he had a real-life illustration for every main point in this book.
I also liked at the very end, Joel gives concise and clear instructions how the reader can begin a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. I was glad to see he included this.

Fulfill Your Destiny
“You have something to offer that nobody else has.” ~ Joel Osteen
Joel Osteen presents a message of hope. Through his experience as a pastor he has encountered problems people have struggled with since the beginning of time. No matter what situation you find yourself in, Joel Osteen has a spiritual solution. He draws on biblical references and his own inner wisdom and life experiences.
One of the major points in “Becoming a Better You,” is the issue of how to change defeating messages into life-changing affirmations. Instead of focusing on weaknesses and faults, you learn to speak to yourself in more positive ways.
“Becoming a better you is all in how you choose to view life.” ~ Joel Osteen
The section on overcoming hereditary problems with a positive mindset is enlightening and very helpful. Some very convincing stories show how humans have the ability to overcome illness just by thinking differently about the problem.
Joel Osteen encourages you to stop dwelling on negative thoughts so you can reach your full potential. In order to fulfill your destiny you have to leave your past mistakes behind you as you reach into the future by following spiritual wisdom.
Some of the areas covered in this book include: divorce, parenting, marriage, addictions, relationships, illness, lifestyle choices, goals, happiness, habits, handling criticism, peace, dreams, kindness, success, God’s love, blessings, career choices, health, aging, forgiveness of sin, compassion, challenges, miracles and self-improvement through a deeper relationship with God. Each section ends with “Action Points.”
“Today I will reach for something beyond where I am presently. I will actively pursue new goals, keeping them out in front of me, and expecting to meet them.” ~ pg. 376, Action Point 3
The most powerful idea in this book is about how you can change your life through remembering that you are a child of Almighty God. With God’s help you can overcome your problems and live the life you have imagined.

Advanced Lessons about Sancification for Christian Believers
One of the great pleasures of this book for me was to re-read many of my favorite sermons by Pastor Joel Osteen. No matter how many times I’ve listened to a sermon that’s included here, the Holy Spirit helped me to draw new meaning from reading it in Become a Better You.
Another great benefit was to see the structure that Pastor Osteen used to organize these sermons relative to one another. Just by seeing that structure and thinking about it after finishing the book, I better understood the process of sanctification (the way that Christian believers go about becoming more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit).
People who don’t know Jesus as their Lord and Savior often think that Christianity is simply about accepting or rejecting Jesus. That’s the first step, the step of salvation from our sins. But our relationship with Jesus builds from there through sanctification.
Those who aren’t Christians often don’t know what large impacts becoming saved and sanctified have. This book is eloquent testimony of how much Christianity does for you here on Earth, long before you die.
Through the many stories (many of them based on his own experiences and those of his family) in the sermons, Pastor Osteen does a marvelous job of showing that transforming experience and potential for even more improvements.
The 31 sermons are organized around seven steps which I have paraphrased as follows:
1. Seek continual improvement and larger challenges.
2. Use your faith to have a positive view of yourself.
3. Improve your relationships with others.
4. Eliminate bad habits and form better ones.
5. Accept your situation.
6. Listen more carefully to and act on God’s directions.
7. Embrace life with Godly passion.
Each step concludes with a few action points that allow you to refocus and redirect your life. These are good habits.
The book concludes with a call to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Some would argue that this book is only for Christians. But if you are not a Christian and wonder what the Christian life is like, I think you’ll find this book to be interesting and valuable as well.
I was struck that some people think this is a self-help book that should be filled with novel ideas. Pastor Joel Osteen is drawing on the timeless words of the Bible. I’m glad he didn’t vary from what God has directed for us.
May God bless you!

An Interview with Joel Osteen
Q: Do you have a hero?
A: Of course, my greatest hero is Jesus Christ. He should be everyone’s greatest hero. However, among men, I have two real heroes. My father, John Osteen, was not only the best father anyone could ever have, but was my best friend as well. He was a man of great integrity, and he taught me how important it was to incorporate Jesus Christ into every part of my life. Another of my heroes is Billy Graham who throughout the years has remained true to that which God called him to do and has done so with the utmost dedication, humility, and integrity.
Q: In today’s conflicted world, how do you encourage people to maintain their faith?
A: As believers we should be assured that Jesus said He would never leave us nor forsake us. We should adopt a mindset that God wants to be involved in our everyday lives, through good times and difficult times. We should communicate with God throughout our day (to pray without ceasing), not just when we are in crisis. He cares about our lives even in the small things. There is no part of our lives that are insignificant to Him.
Q: What did working behind the scenes at Lakewood during your father’s ministry inform how you preach today?
A: Really it all started for me when I was born. Our family never missed church; Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night, week in and week out. However, for 17 years I did produce and edit my father’s sermons for television. I often joke that I attended one year of college and 17 years of seminary. For those 17 years, I would have to study my father’s weekly sermons and then cut them down to a 28-minute TV program while maintaining the message. I guess I’ve listened to at least 1,500 of my father’s messages.
Q: Your ministry reaches millions each week through television and the Internet. How has technology changed how people worship today?
A: Through telecommunications technology, especially the web, more Christian programming is available than ever before. Not only do people have more choices in Christian programming, but they can get as much as they want whenever they want it. I think that our use of technology results in people spending more of their time thinking about the things of God. However, I don’t see technology replacing worship in the traditional sense–that is worshipping with other believers in a church. Everyone should belong to a good Bible-based church.
Q: In our busy lives, what is your advice for how we can slow things down and find peaceful moments?
A: Personally, I take time each morning to spend with God. I have a quiet place in my home or I find a quiet place if I am traveling where I pray and seek guidance from God. I think that is the best way for anyone to start their day; it really sets the tone for each day.
Q: As a father, what advice would you share with parents struggling with our fast-paced culture?
A: Victoria and I decided a long time ago that our family takes priority over most everything else. I tell people all the time that their families should be their first mission field. Today, it takes a great deal of our time and energy to make a living. We need to make sure our families don’t get the short end of the stick and we need to make time for them. And, I am talking about “quality time”; no cell phones, no business calls, no outside distractions, just family.

From Publishers Weekly
Megachurch pastor and bestselling author Osteen follows up Your Best Life Now with this disappointingly unoriginal Christian self-help book. The seven subtitular steps to improvement include instructions to develop good habits, better relationships and an inner life. Osteen balances mind-over-matter pep talks with claims that God wants to bless faithful people with successes. The future is always promising, because God never performs His greatest feats in your yesterdays. At the same time, in order to receive God’s blessing, one must back up prayers with action, obey, maintain a positive attitude toward life and do the right thing with the right motives. Some of Osteen’s advice is sound; for example, he suggests that if you are forgiving and kind to colleagues and friends, they’ll cut you slack when you have crabby days. Other suggestions—like writing down a big goal and posting it on your mirror or desk—are unremarkable. Laced throughout are anodyne first-person vignettes; Osteen struggled with frustration when his favorite restaurant announced a 45-minute wait. The hurried Osteen went to a nearby burger joint, only to have a brief encounter that changed another customer’s life. Voilà—God turned Osteen’s disappointment into blessing! Though this book is destined for strong sales, it offers nothing innovative. (Oct. 15)

Welcome back, Mercer!
For fans of Jack Du Brul and his series character Philip Mercer, the wait for the latest book has been far too long! At least Mercer is returning to us in a fashionable hardback edition. And it’s possible that absence has made my heart grow fonder, because I found this novel a joy to read from start to finish.
Perhaps working with the master, Clive Cussler, is affecting Du Brul’s own work, because Havoc has a distinctly Cusslerian format. There’s the mix of contemporary history, ancient history, and how current day events can shed light on and solve the mysteries of our time. The novel opens during the final hours of the Hindenberg’s voyage. The events that occur right before the airship’s destruction are… startling.
From there we jump to Mercer in Africa, and his meeting with Cali Stowe–who I’m pretty sure is my favorite of Du Brul’s leading ladies–under fairly stressful circumstances. After surviving their first meeting in the midst of a coup attempt, little do the two realize they’ll soon be reunited stateside. The mystery that began on the Hindenberg in 1937 is intimately tied to the events of unfolding around them.
And once the plot gets rolling, the action is non-stop taking Mercer and Cali to locations ranging from an east coast casino to the lost tomb of Alexander the Great. As a matter of fact, it’s possible my only complaint in the whole novel was Mercer’s wanton destruction of historic artifacts. I was SO caught up in the story that I’d cringe every time something priceless was destroyed. I kept having to tell myself, It’s just a story!
But what the real fans want to know is: Is Harry in the book? Of course he is, and up to all his old tricks! This time Du Brul got the balance just right. There’s exactly enough Harry, but not too much. And there were some neat new supporting characters added in this book as well.
Like I said, it’s possible that absence has made my heart grow fonder, but I think Havoc is as good as anything Jack Du Brul has ever written. It may very well be his best yet. He sure better not make us wait several years for the next installment in this terrific series!
Welcome BACK Phillip Mercer!!!
I have been saying for several years now that Jack DuBrul IS the Heir to the Cussler Action Throne, and his last 3 novels have helped cement my opinion, but ‘Havoc’ has in fact cast my opinion in solid titanium. One other reviewer noted that since there has been a much longer wait for this novel than in between the Mercer novels of the past, it MAY have helped to propel ‘Havoc’ into a better status than it otherwise may have received, but I tend to think that DuBrul earned it the hard way: Through good old fashioned great storytelling.
I have noticed that Mercer as well as Dirk Pitt enjoy SOME similarities, and the fact that actual historical events play a major part in almost all of their stories is probably no accident. It IS however one similarity that I enjoy VERY much. In this case, we begin ‘Havoc’ as a passenger aboard the Hindenburg on its tragic final journey to New Jersey. This was a facinating and totally engrossing opening to a fantastic journey that catapults the reader to Niagra Falls, to Africa to quite literally the middle of nowhere in Russia all on the search for something that Alexander The Great used to subdue his enemies, even when faced with impossible odds.
What exactly WAS Alexander using? How did he become the conquerer that made him famous for centuries? And more importantly, why are some hell-bent on finding the answers besides Mercer & Co, and why are others just as determined to keep it all secret? The journey as always is more than half the fun. The action is virtually non-stop and while I still believe Dirk Pitt in his prime could whip Phillip Mercer, it is that exact imperfection that I like most about Mercer as an action hero: he ISN’T perfect. He doesn’t always succeed, and when he does, you get the distinct feeling that his amazingly close brushes with the afterlife come at a tremendous cost. We get to see the REAL Mercer within the pages of ‘Havoc’ as he is still nursing the wounds of losing someone very important, and yet he is tempted by a new and very interesting woman who forces him to accept what has happened and to move on with life, all while being quite the action hero herself.
I have a very small list of Must-Read authors which compell me to find, buy and read all of their novels the day they are released, and if this means anything, Jack DuBrul earned that status about half-way through reading his first book, ‘Vulcan’s Forge’. Give him a shot, and by the way, he has single-handedly brought some much needed new life and entertainment to Cussler’s so-so ‘Oregon Files’ series. Jack, once again, Kudos for a job well done. I look forward to starting ‘Skeleton Coast’ as soon as I get home.
Oh, thank GOD Mercer is back!
It’s hard for a book I looked forward to as much as this one to live up to my expectations, but it did a pretty good job. Phillip Mercer is back at last, rolling onto the scene in war-torn Africa, driving a truck full of refugees while on a geological assignment. This is where he meets Cali Stowe, purportedly from the Centers for Disease Control. Cali is looking for a village that has the highest rate of cancer in the world, hoping to learn valuable information before civil war wipes the village off the map. She and Mercer find the village and a mysterious open pit mine just before being taken captive by some mercenaries, and then getting rescued by some shadowy men who warn them never to return.
Back in Washington, Mercer discovers Cali doesn’t work for the CDC, she’s actually a nuclear specialist who was sent to Africa to search for a source of radiation poisoning. Some stories they heard in Africa put them on the trail of an obscure historian and in the sights of the very dangerous men who are searching for what the historian found. Mercer and Cali follow a trail from Atlantic City, nearly over Niagra Falls, through remote parts of Russia, and into the heart of Egypt, dodging bullets and outrunning the bad guys the whole way. They are aided often by mysterious men who call themselves Janissaries as they hunt for a weapon once used by Alexander the Great that could cause untold destruction in the modern world.
Since Clive Cussler essentially retired, Jack du Brul is the best adventure writer out there, and he hangs onto the title with ease. There is something indefinable that made me grip the pages of his earlier adventures a little tighter that seems to be missing here, though. This was also a good 130 pages shorter than Mercer’s last adventure. Jack du Brul had a really good thing going with this series, but though I hate to say it, it seems to be suffering from his attention being diverted elsewhere. Not so much that this book isn’t good, but it’s not as good as the last four or so in the series. While it’s benefiting greatly from du Brul, I’d scuttle the “Oregon” in a heartbeat if I thought it was going to hurt Phillip Mercer. Quite simply, I love him. He’s tough, vulnerable, and violent when he needs to be; a man’s man who’s still likeable and sensitive to women. He’s the perfect hero for the new millennium.
If you’ve never read Jack du Brul, this isn’t a bad place to start, though of course I recommend starting with Vulcan’s Forge and reading them in order. These are fast-paced, globe-hopping adventures with wonderful characters. Who else has an 80-year-old alcoholic sidekick with a lazy dog aptly named Drag? This is a very fun series that delivers every time, and I couldn’t be happier that Mercer is back.
From Publishers Weekly
Thriller fans who don’t demand much realism in their reads should enjoy the first hardcover entry in bestseller Du Brul’s adventure series featuring geologist and spy Philip Mercer (Vulcan Forge, etc.). The novel opens with an intriguing premise—that the Hindenburg zeppelin blew up in 1937 as the result of sabotage aimed at keeping a crackpot academic’s discoveries secret. In the present-day Central African Republic, Mercer hooks up with the de rigueur attractive but brainy female, Cali Stowe, who’s a U.S. intelligence agent posing as a medical researcher. As the pair dodge death from violent insurgent armies in predictable action sequences, they exchange light banter—and learn that the African nation is the source of a radioactive element coveted by terrorists that may have been used by Alexander the Great to defeat his foes. Du Brul is the coauthor with Clive Cussler of the Oregon Files novels, Dark Watch and Skeleton Coast. (Oct.)

Fans of Phillip Mercer, sometime geologist, sometime soldier of fortune, won’t be unhappy with this latest installment in the series. Once again, Mercer is portrayed by J. Charles, who has a clear, resonant voice. This time Mercer is called upon to unearth a seventy-year-old secret that is linked to a current act of terrorism. DuBrul cleverly offers an alternative explanation for the 1937 destruction of the Nazi zeppelin HINDENBURG at Lakehurst, New Jersey. Charles is at his best portraying newsman Herb Morrison, who witnesses the catastrophe and describes it as it happens. Charles is less successful at playing characters with accents. Most sound contrived. A.L.H. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine– Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Lovely
What a thoroughly enjoyable book. Good, even by Madeline Hunter standards. The plot is solid, the characters are fully developed.
Audrianna is the daughter of a government official who committed suicide. He was implicated in a scandal resulting in the deaths of soldiers on the battlefield. Sebastian is the brother of a marquess, an MP, and Audrianna’s father’s accuser. They encounter each other as the result of a newspaper advertisement soliciting a meeting with Audrianna’s father. The result is Audrianna and Sebastian being caught in a compromising situation and their eventual marriage. The understanding and love between them grows gradually, hampered by their adversarial history.
Well-written, great attention to detail. I always appreciate an author who can get the titles and addresses of British aristoracy right. A breath of fresh air in a genre crowded with poorly written dreck.
A pleasure to read!
After reading many forgettable historical romances over the past few months, it was a true pleasure to pick up Madeline Hunter’s latest. She has always been one of my favorite authors, but lately even that usually safe method of selecting investments had not always paid off. How relieved and happy I was to find that this book was a delight!
This first installment of a planned quartet involving “The Rarest Blooms” - a group of women who live together in a country house raising flowers, hiding their pasts and attempting to forge their independent futures- did a good job of introducing a series of interesting and compelling characters. “Ravishing in Red” focused on Audrianna, a not-so-young women seeking to clear her father’s name in a war-time scandal. I found her characterization, motivations, thoughts, and dialog particularly believable and sympathetic for a woman of her time. From details regarding her relationships with her mother & sister, to her sometimes awkward yet beautifully poignant confessions to Sebastian, I felt I truly understood and respected her as a character and a Woman. Sebastien is a gentleman and a rake, forced to give up his wild times, in order to look into the war-time scandal for his disabled brother, a Marquess and an influential member of the Commons. The brothers’ relationship is a refreshing and pivotal plot point of the story, underscoring Sebastien’s character and motivations.
Though I have read this type of story before, Ms. Hunter’s characters are fresh, honest, and compellingly mature. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.
A historical romance that’s romantic and historical.
After a few weeks of reading historical romance releases that everybody but me seems to like I finally found a winner. I buy without reservation any book written by Madeline Hunter. For me, even the ones others say are bad, are good. She puts me back into the historical period her characters are living in, whether it be Victorian, Regency or medieval, and gives me a good romance at the same time. I don’t skim or skip pages but rather savor the whole reading experience and don’t want the book to end. In contrast to the characters found in many other romances, her characters speak and behave much more closely to the way I imagine people would at that particular time. If we do find a heroine doing something inconsistent with what is expected it is not an annoying, cutesy, immature action, but rather something circumstances have forced her to do in spite of customs of the times. Because of this, the dialogue in a Hunter book is not full of contemporary American speech patterns and vocabulary and may sometimes sound a bit stilted to the fans of certain other historical romance authors whose characters speak and act in a way that makes me feel as if modern-day people had time-traveled back in history. So, this review is not a summary of the plot. That can be found here online or on the back of the book. Suffice it to say that this is a great Regency romance with an interesting plotline and a great cast of characters in addition to our heroine and hero. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series which will develop the love story of two of the secondary characters we meet in this one.

*Starred Review* Audrianna Kelmsleigh had no intention of shooting Sebastian Summerhays; it was an accident. The only reason Audrianna even brought a weapon with her was because she thought she might need some protection when she met the man who held the key to clearing her father’s name: the mysterious “Domino.” Much to Audrianna’s disappointment, the man who turns up is Sebastian, one of the government officials whose accusations of treason drove Audrianna’s father to suicide. When Domino finally arrives, he quickly flees once he discovers that Audrianna is not alone. In the confusion, the gun goes off, Sebastian is wounded, and the resulting scandal threatens to destroy what’s left of Audrianna’s reputation. Of course, there is a solution, but the very idea of marrying Sebastian is enough to make Audrianna seriously consider picking up the pistol and finishing off what she started. Richly spiced with wicked wit and masterfully threaded with danger and desire, the superbly sexy first book in Hunter’s new Regency historical quartet is irresistible and wonderfully entertaining. –John Charles
