My 2 1/2 year-old son received this dvd as a Christmas gift and LOVES it! It’s now February and he still asks to watch it frequently. It is well-produced and entertaining so we don’t mind watching it as well.

Yes, it is longer (obviously) and more complex than the Bob TV series, and some children may get bored with it. And Elton John fans, be warned, his character does not have a very big role.

We have been waiting for this for over a year, and my 4 year-son old was VERY happy to see it finally arrive. We loved the last “feature length” movie (Knights of fix-a-lot) so I knew that this story would be able to hold his attention for the full story. I LOVED seeing Elton John… which my son couldn’t care less about. He wished he could see the trucks more. (They didn’t do much work in this story that is for sure.) He also wanted to see Bob and his brother (Tom) together more… don’t want to spoil it, but they don’t get together till the end! He didn’t get to see them spend Christmas together, which was the whole point of the movie to him. He also thought the new Mayor was bossy… which she was.
So…. we liked it, but thought it was quite a bit different from the usual fix-everything-format. My son still asks to watch this one, but more often asks to watch other “Bob movies”.

The First Interstellar War comes to a stirring climax in “The Homefront Campaign”, the latest DVD release in the Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles series. During the close of the Klendathu campaign, the Arachnid Queen escapes and SICON forces follow her trail. They find her in deep space and after pitched battle destroy the Royal Transport. The world celebrates but Carl Jenkins, the Roughnecks psychic believes the Queen is alive on Earth. At Carl’s urging the Roughnecks enter deepest darkest suburbia to prove the bug menace remains. Sadly Jenkins is correct, the Queen is on Earth and our home becomes the last battlefield. The war does not go well, and the Roughnecks are in the thick of it. The squad suffers a terrible loss and must find a way to stay together to continue the fight.
This DVD is a triumph and disappointment. The stories in this chapter are surprisingly adult and poignant, as the squad deals with death, self-doubt, and uncertainty. The CGI work done primarily by Foundation Imaging is some of the best of the series (watch for the fighter plane flyover of Hawaii) The disappointment is that the end of the story is uncertain. Sony originally scripted three final episodes to include the final conflict of the war, and because of budgetary constraints those episodes have not been produced. I hope the success of these DVDs will prompt Sony to give the show’s fans the ending they deserve.

This disc contains episodes 32, 34, 35, 36 and 37 of Roughecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles. Perhaps now the rest of the world can appreciate the frustration of the fans that this series was never completed. Episode 33 was never made due to budget limitations and episode 31 was skipped over since only 5 episodes would fit on the disk (according to the commentaries anyway). The grand finale, episodes 38 - 40, were scripted but never animated. Perhaps now that the series is available on DVD the demand for more episodes will be overwhelming. Frankly, I was hoping they’d be able to squeeze episode 31 on this disc as well, since now there is an episode gap between the Klendathu Campaign and the Homefront Campaign. Still, if I was forced to choose between episode 31 and the last televised episode of the series, I would have made the same choice. So even though this disc isn’t all an obsessive fanboy could hope for, it still offers up the best and brightest episodes of the entire Roughnecks series!

This campaign brings the Arachnid conflict to Earth’s own back yard. Mutant Bug clones will try to infiltrate our civilian infrastructure. Loyalties will be divided between saving civilian lives and eradicating the Arachnid menace. Our heros will face a crushing personal loss to their own squad (one of the main characters will NOT live to see the end of this campaign). But if our heros aren’t able to pull themselves together, the planet Earth may not have any hope for a future. This is the climax the entire series has be building toward. If you are interested in collecting this series at all, you MUST own this DVD!

The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Dead is, of course, for the original, uncut, unadulterated edition. The original is, quite simply, the most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to horror classics like Diabolique (the original French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Shining. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years old on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film still gives me the chills whenever I see it (usually at Halloween).

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was curious to see what they termed as “new footage.” What I got was a horrible mess that butchered the original film, removed the original music for a terrible synthesizer score and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a new character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the original is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the original cast look like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the original. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the original 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the new footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a new ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “new” version is a piece of trash that desecrates the most frightening film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

30 Anniversary version: No Stars

This review pertains only to the Millennium Edition DVD of Night of the Living Dead.

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Dead has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to clarify.

This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Dead fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did right by this new edition.

George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the back of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the picture and sound are good, and though this doesn’t exactly contain the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the excellent 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the recent double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You get a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but still great); an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen); the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition); two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating portion of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually boring but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to produce Night of the Living Dead.

THIS is the right edition of Night of the Living Dead, the one to get for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the necessary people (notice that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the way it wants to be seen.
Now I’m waiting for a deluxe release of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead…

VIAJE AL CENTRO DE LA TIERRA was a Spanish live-action coproduction that received limited distribution in 1978 in the United States by International Picture Show under the title WHERE TIME BEGAN; it was initially titled JULES VERNE’S FABULOUS JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. Made for $2 million, WHERE TIME BEGAN was shot over a period of five months, and uses most of Verne’s major incidents.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jules Verne’s the Fabulous Journey to the Center of the Earth! Click Here

WHERE TIME BEGAN opens with a pre-credit discussion of the interior of the Earth by a group of geologists, with Professor Otto Lidenbrock (Kenneth More) commenting that the only way to prove any of the theories is through an actual descent. The credits follow, superimposed over a pleasant salute to the Vernian visual style of Georges Méliès, but marred by an inane song on the soundtrack.

The date of the story is shifted to 1898, to make it more contemporary for the audience, in both technology and social mores (such as the place of women). In Hamburg, an aged man tries to sell several old volumes at a book store; they are bought by Lidenbrock. Arriving home, he finds the soldier Axel accidentally kneeling before his niece Glauben, and assuming there has been a marriage proposal, gladly but offhandedly offers his consent. Glauben notices the small note that falls from the book, and together Lidenbrock, Axel, and Glauben, with the help of the cinematically referential device of a magic lantern, discover the key to Saknussemm’s code.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jules Verne’s the Fabulous Journey to the Center of the Earth! Click Here

Under the same necessity to add a feminine lead as other versions, WHERE TIME BEGAN follows a vastly simpler method. Glauben wants to go on the trip, and her practicality proves a valuable assistance to the absent-minded Lidenbrock and equally ill-prepared Axel. By contrast, it is Axel who is uncertain, hesitant, and reluctant; the juxtaposition of his equivocation with Lidenbrock’s certainty and Glauben’s eagerness provides humor that was not in the novel.

The exteriors of the expedition’s beginning and exit through craters were taken at the Lanzarote volcano in the Canary Islands, providing a barren, other-worldly appearance that almost resembles a moonscape. Although the reddish plains scarcely resembled Iceland, a series of extreme dramatic zooms impressively isolates the cast amidst the desolate location, providing a more dynamic lead-up to the descent than in the 1959 movie. The plunge into the Earth was shot a half-mile inside caves near Madrid, with the lighting effectively dark and claustrophobic.

When Hans’s pickaxe thrust releases boiling water, it burns the hand of the man Glauben had seen in the darkness–who finally introduces himself as Olsen (Jack Taylor). The underground sea seems to have a healing physical power over the members of the expedition. Glauben notices that Olsen never seems to require sustenance, and his only tool is a copper-colored metal box he carries with him (which unfortunately resembles in size and shape nothing so much as a metal tea-kettle).

The sequence around the underground sea is, as in the novel, the centerpiece of the story, and the full treatment of this setting and the incidents around it–the island, the dinosaurs, the storm–with a large degree of fidelity to Verne, make WHERE TIME BEGAN noticeably different from other films of the novel. Filters turn the ocean a deep shade of greenish-blue aqua, contrasting with the orange of the land; the striking color combinations make the setting all the more convincing.

Washed ashore with the wreckage of their raft and their equipment after the storm, Axel and Glauben go in search of Olsen, passing through a field of fossils and into a forest. At this point, WHERE TIME BEGAN becomes increasingly far-fetched. Axel and Glauben are suddenly attacked, not by the ten foot prehistoric man of Verne’s imagination, but by a giant ape, failing to connect with Verne’s evolutionary link. Olsen comes to the rescue, and allowing them to glimpse a whole city of men who resemble him.

Olsen sets off an explosion that will open an escape for Lidenbrock, Axel, Glauben, and Hans, saying he will find his own way to safety. The scene comes rather suddenly, and is confusing in its brevity and lack of explanatory dialogue. WHERE TIME BEGAN avoids saying whether the expedition actually reached their destination or not, so there is no sense of the downward distance they have traveled.

In a coda, Axel and Glauben have married, Hans is once more a prosperous sheepherder, and Lidenbrock still haunts the old bookshop. One day, he learns that a parcel has been left for him, and, unwrapped, it proves to be Olsen’s metal box. Looking toward the shop window, Lidenbrock sees an aged man, the same one who brought in Saknussemm’s journal–and recognizes that he is “Olsen.” This parallel closure brings the film back to where it began.

Is Olsen perhaps meant to be Arne Saknussemm himself, or a representative of his pioneering spirit? Either or both could be true; Olsen stands in for the absent predecessor whose earlier journey they are recreating. Significantly, Olsen appears after Lidenbrock loses Saknussemm’s original book, and will rescue the travelers at the point where Saknussemm’s last carving of his initials appears. He is less of a full-fledged character than a symbol, a vivid reminder of the theme of time that, in the form of evolution, was such a motif of the novel.

The cast credibly enact their roles, particularly Kenneth More, despite his age. The special effects (by Emilio Ruiz) are variable; the dinosaurs are far less convincing than those of the 1959 version, but WHERE TIME BEGAN also attempts to do far more with them, the previous film not even attempting to stage the battle at sea. The most consistent virtue is the impressive photography by Andres Berenguer, especially the volcanic surfaces, the caves, and the underground ocean. Judged by its own standards and scale, WHERE TIME BEGAN must be rated a very satisfactory although uneven effort.

This product is what I expected from the infomercial - the infomercial is a good representation of what you’ll get. The DVDs are good, come in a small case (no excess packaging to exaggerate or compensate for lack of real product). The accompanying written materials are good too.

However, I found that I wasn’t quite in shape enough when P90X arrived to use it well. I went back and bought Tony Horton’s “Power Half Hour” and used that for a few weeks first - had to wake up some muscles I’ve let go dormant. I’ve been in good shape most of my life, but kind of got lazy lately - I needed to get a basic foundation before I could jump into the incredible workouts he provides.

Make no mistake; this is a commitment. The workouts are long, and hard, but they are engaging. No geeky cheesy cheerleader pep talks in the DVD, and no arrogant gym rat jerks either. If I win the lottery, I’ll try to hire Tony as my personal trainer; he has a good positive attitude, and seems to keep the workouts real with a sense of humility and humor.

The segment timer is great. Though the workouts are typically an hour long, he has “chunked” them down into segments, with a “progress bar” on the screen - kind of like the bar on the computer - so you can adjust your pace or your mindset with the workout.

Tony uses both men and women of differing degrees of flexibility and fitness; there’s always a body on the screen up there to help me with my own form.

I’m a former Marine - and this is used to replace my “daily thirteen.” If only I knew about some of these workouts back in the day… So I give it a thumbs up from the perspective of some really challenging workouts I’ve experienced in the past.

Overall, a good deal. But be warned, it isn’t for the fat couch potato. Like the infomercial says, its for folks that want to get in BETTER shape; the expectation is that you already are in shape and want to take it to the next level.

*Original Power 90 review*

Let me first say that i’m one of the people that tried the regular Power 90 workout videos at first. I was pretty much a couch potato who would work out once in a while, and then just stop completely for several months. Power 90 is a decent workout for people who are trying to get back into shape who want to get into a mediocre level of fitness; or just maintain an average body.

Pros for Power 90:

1.)A good smooth start for beginners. It will get your body in decent shape.

2.)Short workout time. The workouts last from 35-45 minutes; stretching, warming up, workout, and cool down in all.

3.)Good mix of everything. Tony incorporates stretching, warming up, and cooling down all at the right times during a workout.

4.)Has a timer countdown on screen.

5.)Tony has great direction, tries to motivate you, and tries to be funny. Just by listening to him speak and guiding on how you should do a certain movement/stretch, you get a sense that he actually knows what he’s talking about when it comes to fitness.

6.)Tony TOUCHES, but doesnt dive into what’s in the P90X program. He scratches on Stretching, Yoga, Strength training, Cardio, Kicking/Punching. This sets you up and gets you somewhat used to what comes in P90X.

Cons for Power 90:

1.)When I saw the routine and the small “studio” they shot this in, I really wasnt impressed. But then again, it was my first workout

video, so I have nothing to really compare it to. It just gave me the impression that the workout would be cheesy and generic.

2.)Repetitive. You have Level 1 and Level 2 routines. Basically Cardio Level 1, and Circuit Training level 1. Once you get to level 2, you’re pretty much stuck doing the same thing every other day, and it gets old after the first month.

Bottom line for Power 90: If you’re only a beginner or would just like to maintain your weight/average body, Power 90 is for you. If you can’t get through the regular Power 90, don’t try P90X just yet. Work your way up.

*And now for P90X Review*

Like someone already said, the packaging for all 13 DVDs is great, and no excess garbage cases. The Nutrition Guide is very informative and well written, and so is the Workout Book they include. I dont follow the food guide to the ‘T’ since i’m on a budget, but they include great recipes for pretty much anyone’s taste.

The reason I included a review of the regular Power 90 was to express just how impressed I am with the improvement and greatness that the P90X routine is.

Pros over the regular P90:

1.) The workouts are HARD. Unless you’ve have an Olympian type body(which 99% of us dont), these workouts will kick your butt. If it doesn’t, you’re obviously not trying hard enough or doing something wrong.

2.) No matter what level of fitness or what sport you love to play, you’ll benefit from these routines. Tony covers everything to improve flexibility, strength, endurance, and stamina. Any athlete will become an even better one after 90 days.

3.) Not repetitive. You can go for almost 2 weeks without doing the same workout twice. In the regular Power 90, you only tasted some of the things that P90X has. This expands on EVERYTHING you learn in Power 90; things like Yoga, Strength training, Cardio, High/Low impact movements, Flexibility, etc.

4.) Price. For 120 bucks, you get the Nutrition guide, Workout Guide, and 1 intro DVD + 12 Workout DVDs. Pretty much under 10 dollars per DVD. That would be about 30$ a month, which is an average cost for going to a gym. In the long run, the program pays for itself.

5.) In reality, all you need are workout bands and your own body weight to do everything in the program. The key thing is how you use the bands, so you dont necessarily need weights or the pull-up bar. However, if you’re trying to bulk up, I recommend using weights.

6.) Presentation. The workout studio they shoot it looks great and truly fits the atmosphere for the whole P90X image. Direction and guidance from Tony like always, is outstanding. He tells you exactly how to perform a stretch/workout/warmup, why you do it, and where you should feel the burn or stretch. Like someone else pointed out, his workout buddies vary in body types so you can see the results of what each body type can achieve in the end.

Cons:

1.) The workouts are long. I guess technically this isnt a con, since the program is meant to be (P90)Xtreme.

2.) Supplements are expensive. I was going to say over-priced, but then I look at the supplements that I personally like taking as an alternative to BeachBody’s stuff. BB’s supplements dont have as much protein as I like in my post-workout drink.

As you can see the Pros greatly outweigh the Cons…which there pretty much isnt.

Bottom line: Like other reviewers have said, if you’re a beginner dont start out on P90X. Start out with Power 90 first. But if you’re in decent shape, there’s no other program out there that will turn you into a better athlete.

Lastly, follow a good diet. Whether you’re trying to lose fat or bulk up, 60% of your results will be from your diet, believe it or not it’s true.

I think if everyone would stop referring to the Wes Anderson movies as comedies we would all be better off. “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” is not about making the audience laugh. Yes, there are times you will laugh, but there are also times you will cringe, and there are other moments for just about everything else. What kind of movie is it? It really isn’t something that can be given a single label. Yes, there are all kinds of jokes, but aren’t they in the service of something more than simple laughs? Hearing David Bowie songs in Portuguese with an acoustic guitar is not only funny, it is kind of beautiful.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection! Click Here

A simple joke is the name of Zissou’s ship. The Belefonte is clearly a play on Cousteau’s Calypso as are the crew’s red knit caps. However, some of the humor is quite tough. Think of the scene with Jeff Goldblum’s Alistair Hennessy playing cards with his pirate captors as Steve Zissou comes in the room. What follows is funny, but grim at the same time. Then there is the weird way the inside of the boat is portrayed in a cutaway set that looks fake and is meant to look fake. Notice that the science room is the smallest room on this research vessel. The Sauna is much bigger and all the rooms given over to film production constitute most of the ship.

This movie has a lot of fun with the artificial in documentaries and films. Even the scenes of creatures of the sea are often CGI creations that don’t even try to look real. Heck, even the colors in the Zissou documentaries are supersaturated and look like they were done in different colors of ink rather than the ocean. How real is life when you are more concerned about getting everything shot with the right sound rather than living it? And how legitimate can a documentary be when it is cobbled together from a lot of staged shots and hosted by someone who really doesn’t have a clue about the science behind what is being filmed?

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection! Click Here

All of the lead actors are terrific and Bill Murray leads the way as the weary and fading Steve Zissou. Everyone involved with Zissou has their own downward arc. Even the equipment is old and barely works. Tired helicopters are dangerous things.

Does the movie work? Maybe not. However, I find so much to watch and enjoy in each scene - even just the actions of the non-speaking characters - that I really enjoyed this movie. If you want to see something strangely beautiful, that plays with all kinds of notions of what is real and what is fake and has a lot of fun along the way, this might be something you would enjoy, although it is not for children.

I guess the kind of send up it is, even of Moby Dick, can be captured by then end title that expresses “gratitude to the Jacques Cousteau Society even though they had nothing to do with the making of the film.” I like this kind of thing. Maybe you do to.

Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) is sowing some of his more artificial and creative wild oats in his latest, “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.” I mean stop-motion clay animated sea horses and other assorted sea creatures? As well as a third wall removed set of Zissou’s (Bill Murray) ship in which Anderson films the scenes there as if they were acts in a stage play?

It’s strange, weird…and I’ve got to admit pretty wonderful.

Bill Murray plays Steve Zissou: a Jacques Cousteau sort of Sea Adventurer who, at the film’s beginning, is down on his luck and has just lost a best friend to a so-called Jaguar Shark. One of the film’s funniest scenes comes near the beginning when Zissou, in a conference swears to get even with the shark by finding and murdering it to avenge the death of his friend.

Owen Wilson is also on hand as Ned: a man who claims to be Zissou’s son and once again we have this recurring theme in Anderson’s work about lost, then regained fathers so prevalent in “The Royal Tenenbaums.”

With a film so full of artifice, snotty-yet-funny wit and the king and queen of deadpan, Murray and Angelica Huston one would think that all of “The Aquatic Life” would be without an emotional life. But I found this film to have a very deep well of emotion if you are willing to wash down your emotion with large gulps of remorse and wry humor.

“The Life Aquatic” is a veritable beggar’s banquet for the eyes and the ears (a Brazilian troubadour sings David Bowie songs throughout the film to underscore the drama) and though you sometimes think the whole ship is going to go over the edge artistically…it never does. It just sails along; the course set for parts unknown and uncharted.

This was a wonderful movie that my kids love! I would much rather them watching this than the garbage cartoons that are on every channel.I even got something out of it.

Being a Projectionist working in the 50’s I can vouch that these films were all presented in Widescreen.

So as one reviewer puts it,these are not fake Widescreen’but are being presented as they were originally filmed.

Had to clear that up.

I saw these films on those rainy Saturday afternoon movie presentations on tv during the 60’s & 70’s when I was growing up on a farm in central Texas. I liked em then and I still like em in spite of all the cgi efx we now enjoy on film. There was something special about these movies that you just have to experience to appreciate. Like OZ and King Kong- the old efx are sometimes the best.
