My son and I came out of the theater exhausted impartial by watching this quasi-documentary reenactment of the 1985 ascent up an unclimbed route on the Siula Grande glacier in Peru. The film’s impact is heightened by the superior cutting between the actor/climbers and Simon Yates and Joe Simpson, who choose their actions, reactions, and feelings nearly 20 years later. Pain strikes on the descent, where — as one of them notes — “80 percent of accidents happen.” After Simpson breaks his leg in a drop, Yates — against impossible odds — continues to try and catch him down. Finally, Simpson falls again, off the edge of the mountain. After hours of hanging on to what feels like tiring, weight, Yates cuts the rope to prevent himself from being gradually pulled into the void. Simpson’s survival and return to bad camp is nothing short of miraculous, suggesting that man is never more tenacious about life than when he is closest to losing it. Though far different in its circumstances, his myth rivals that of Shackleton and the Endurance in Antartica three quarters of a century before. An underlying convey, addressed briefly in the film, is whether Yates should have nick the rope. Apparently some other climbers criticized him for doing so, but Simpson always defended his action. I have no conception how well the technical aspects of Touching the Void are done, but to this mostly earthboard amateur, they looked brilliantly and truly shot. Misfortune and beauty are scarcely separable in Touching the Void. When you are not immersed in the dismay of Yates’ and, especially, Simpson’s spot, the icy beauty of the glacier, the colors within its crevasses are glowing. A anecdote of recklessness and gigantic determination, superbly told, filled with many “how did they ever shoot that? ” moments, Touching the Void must be seen.

There aren’t enough “mosts” and “-ests” to report this movie. It’s the account of two men, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, climbing the west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. After making the summit, Joe slips on the descent and shatters his leg. Faced with positive death on the mountain, they attempt to drop by having Simon lower his injured friend in 300 foot increments (the length of their available rope) . This works for a while until Joe slides over a precipice and is left hanging in mid-air. Unaware of whether his friend is alive or tiring,, Simon’s only course of action is to eventually chop the rope.

Amazingly enough, Joe survived not only the descend over the ledge and the subsequent descend to the bottom of a deep crevasse. While Simon fought the elements and continued down (a harrowing story in its beget true), Joe managed to mosey out of the crevasse and after a four day ordeal arrive their sinister camp. Somehow it seems trite to call this an adventure, and yet ordeal doesn’t fully report anguish of it all.

Joe and Simon themselves provide the narration and context with an almost unworldly matter of fact manner that only adds to the experience You “know” they survived! The ordeal is painstakingly recreated with actors subbing for Joe and Simon as they offer their enjoy stories and perspectives. Beyond the sheer drama of this film, there is some of the most impressive cinematography that you’ll ever gaze. At times the camera will pan befriend from a relatively terminate shot to a distance of a mile or more away, leaving the climber shrimp more than a puny blur on the wall. It’s a incredible film that will truly leave you breathless.

Having watched this movie since I was in my early teens, I have bought the DVD published by KINO ON VIDEO, and oh my, Andrei Tarkovsky must be rolling in his grave colorful what they did to his masterpiece.

For those of you who don’t remark Russian, I feel very very very terrible for you, because of the unpleasant translation of the movie. Aside from the poems in the movie, that were previously translated by the professionals, the translation sounds as though it was done by fifth-graders. And not objective because it is done in the high-school level English. HALF of the speech is not translated at all–a lot of distinguished chatter is completely missing in the subtitles. Many things are oversimplified and revealed, instead of letting the viewer dig them out him/herself. Those of you who don’t understand Russian are doomed to be tortured by such translation and never to squawk the suitable beauty and meaning of the modern script. Having read all of the subtitles, I understood a lot of things in a infamous intention, different from the device they were intended in the first status, and had zero satisfaction from the movie. Thank [deity] I’m Russian.

The repulsive yellow subtitles can NOT be removed–they will conclude on the cover forever while I witness the movie and irritate and upset me with the abovementioned crimes against Art.

The supposedly “shadowy and white” scenes, which originally had a silver-ish quality to them, and some were in sepia, are now in tedious B&W a la Fellini’s La Strada. I former to have a feeling that the bushes were made out of steel and silver, but not on this DVD.

DVD has ZERO extras, and thank [deity] they divided the movie into chapters for easy scene access, but even there they managed to screw up. Upon skipping to a chapter, the scenes do not originate from the beginning, and you actually skip halfway into the characters’ speech.

For Tarkovsky movies, I would NORMALLY recommend R.U.S.C.I.C.O. editions, but not in the case of Mirror. Yes, as any R.U.S.C.I.C.O. movie, it has very advantageous subtitles, in a dozen languages. But, the problems with the relate and sound are even worse in their edition, albeit better represent quality as opposed to the grainy KINO quality. R.U.S.C.I.C.O. tried extremely hard to accomplish the movie more exquisite, and, apparently, overdid it. The lighting does not match with the recent movie, as they try to do every object more distinctly seen and illuminated. They increase sharpness in places where it shouldn’t buy status, such as “hand-on-fire” image, thus depriving the illusion that the hand is on fire. Remastered sound often fails too, as many sounds are louder than others and overlap each other out of order.

But I digress. We have no other choice but to resolve between either KINO or R.U.S.C.I.C.O. edition of Mirror. I suggest buying both :) so that you could experience the near-proper recount quality of KINO and the helpful translation of R.U.S.C.I.C.O.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s THE MIRROR (1974) is his most personal and artistically valiant film–and to me, ultimately his most spicy.

A semi-autobiographical work, it interweaves poems, dramatic scenes, dreams and newsreels to evoke the inner symbolic world of the protagonist, his nostalgia for the past and his unnerved relationships with his wife and mother in the indicate. At the same time it is a meditation on the nature of Russia, from the nation’s role as mediator between the East and West to specific historical events such as the Stalinist purges of the mid-to-late 1930s and World War II. Indeed, few works of art say more about the Russian people with such economy.

The cinematography, by Georgii Rerberg, is so richly detailed that it frequently takes your breath away. Many of the shots are deliberately reminiscent of paintings by Breughel and Leonardo da Vinci. The soundtrack is equally blooming, layered with natural sounds, electronic music, classical music (by composers such as Bach and Pergolesi) and poems (written and recited by the director’s father Arsenii Tarkovsky, a well-known Russian poet) .

The film undoubtedly benefits from its worthy cast, which includes many favorite and highly respected Russian actors. The speak of the Narrator is played by Innokenty Smoktunovsky; Margarita Terekhova plays both the Mother and the Wife. Other actors build indelible impressions in smaller roles: Anatoly Solonitsyn (the Doctor), Oleg Yankovsky (the Father), Alla Demidova and Nikolai Grinko (the mother’s colleagues at the printing factory) . For those who lisp Russian, it’s a pleasure fair to hear their finely tuned dialogue.

Although the film was widely criticized for being too difficult to follow, it was also praised by many Russian critics for capturing the spirit of an entire generation. It may not be to the taste of everyone, since it is constructed more like a poem than a venerable film memoir. However, for those who are willing to develop the leap of faith, it is uniquely rewarding.

Kino on Video’s unusual DVD looks absolutely radiant. Having seen the film a number of times in various less-than-ideal incarnations on video, I was impressed at the procedure the DVD captures the richness of the film’s cinemtography. The film is above all a sensuous experience, so every extra bit of detail in the image and sound helps add to its overall emotional impact. Kino has frail the same transfer for their novel VHS edition, but the DVD is clearly preferable and it’s the same imprint. It doesn’t have any special features, unlike Kino’s modern release of Tarkovky’s THE SACRIFICE, which includes a making-of documentary. However, it’s hard to complain when the film itself and the video transfer are so satisfying. In summation, I can hardly recommend this particular title more highly.

“Nim’s Island” is a story of courage. Our three main characters each face trials of the spirit.

Jack Rusoe (Butler), a marine biologist, is a single father who is raising his young daughter (Breslin) at the foot of a volcano on a deserted island they found while the two sailed the seas searching for a blue whale that’d swallowed Nim’s Mom, Emily. They live alone and like it that map. Nim (Breslin) is “Island schooled” by her father and has lizards and sea turtles for playmates.

Alexandra ‘Alex’ Rover (Foster) a writer of adventure stories featuring a plucky man bearing her name. Alexandra calls herself a borderline agoraphobic. She hasn’t left her apartment in San Francisco for sixteen weeks.

She’s also got a problem–she’s three weeks’ slow getting a draft of her latest “Alex Rover” new to her editor, Buffy, and can’t rep Alex (also played by Butler) out of a trap in a volcano in Chapter 8. Like many writers, her character is actual to her and he’s tired of being stuck in the same pickle and wants Alex to collect on with the book and both their lives.

Jack leaves on a specimen collection hasten and Nim stays home alone for the first time to wait on with the birth of sea turtles. She’s told to bellow anyone emailing Jack that he’ll return on Thursday and never converse the station of their island. Alexandra becomes Nim’s inadvertent penpal when she writes Jack asking about volcanoes and thinks that Nim is Jack’s assistant. Nim thinks Alex is her hero, Alex Rover, and will do anything to back him.

Despite Jack’s admonishment. Nim answers the author’s questions about the volcano and accidentally injures herself rappelling down from the top. From the heights, she sees a skim ship called the Buccaneer landing and believes the men to be pirates. When the ship returns with a boatload of tourists to devour the island, Nim thinks she’s being ‘invaded’ and asks her hero, Alex Rover, for aid.

Prodded by her character, Alex packs her bags and her courage, and heads literally toward uncharted waters to assist a runt girl alone. Exquisite courageous, since she’s got to confront alarm of honest about everything.

Out on the launch sea, Jack’s encountered a storm and his ship’s damaged. He may not construct it help to his daughter.

Meanwhile, the tourist ship has arrive help and Nim’s launched an attack on the invaders with the assist of her animal friends. Abominable Alex is struggling to invent it to the island, and Jack’s cobbling a ship together to regain help home to his daughter.

The story’s written for children, but the tale’s so entertaining you really are lost from the moment Nim (Breslin) starts telling us about the loss of her Mom and their travels. All the actors are people you want to peruse conclude their goals.

WARNING: This memoir may not work for very young children. A microscopic girl of about 4 next to us whose Daddy was in Iraq was delicate distressed when she conception Nim’s Daddy was lost and was disturbed through several of the scenes. “Nim’s Island” is a amazing adventure, but it could be scary and the issues of abandonment, scary spiders, sharks, etc. might be too great for them.

Rebecca Kyle, April 2008

This lightweight bit of fluff actually has a bit more substance than I expected, but nearly enough mass to bog it down. On the surface, it’s a kid-empowerment movie. Nim, the nine year conventional girl, is adventurous, enthusiastic in everything, and fiercely self-reliant. Alex (that’s Alexandra, mighty to the surprise of people expecting a male Alex) is too unnerved to start the front door, and gets carsick before the car even starts bright. Nim is dauntless and Alex is omniphobic. Composed, once their friendship forms, Alex overcomes her terror of everything but her shadow to aid Nim when disasters leave her alone, harm, and paralyzed.

The two main characters balance beautifully. Nim is yound and valiant, by nature, but unexcited a cramped girl who gets petrified when truly scary things happen. Alex embodies timidity, but has a core of mousy bravery that rises to the occasion. Nim lives in the world of Alex’s adventure stories, which turn dependable around her as she reads them; Alex lives with the characters she writes, too, but has a mighty more argumentative relationship with them. A few other things approach across nicely, too: the pervasive esteem of reading, nearly lost in today’s media-mad world, and the image of scientist-geek as loving, strong, and physically competent. The girl-power message is there too, without being peculiar or overbearing. And despite a sure conception of science, Nim brings a touch of magic, too.

I might not remember this one a week from now, but it’s tremendous entertainment for any kid in your life (with a very few slightly scary moments) . If you have a rainy afternoon, have a blast.

Based on the manga by Rei Hiroe, “Shadowy LAGOON” is an anime series that was well received in Japan. This second season dubbed “The Second Barrage” aired in Japan around October, 2006 and lasted for twelve weeks with a third season unprejudiced recently announced. Thanks to Geneon, U.S. audiences are finally able to have an official station 1 release with episodes 13-24. This second season boasts of some graphic violence and very wintry anime action divided into 3 storylines–it also has very strong themes about existentialism, the moralities between good and scandalous, choices and our possess free will.

The second “Barrage” has been divided into 3 storylines that follows the adventures of mercenaries known as the “lagoon” company. Their scandalous of operations is in the fictional town of Roanapur in Thailand and they transport proper and does business with some shady characters. The first one being some killings occurring in Roanapur, being executed by children, twins to be sincere. They are targeting the Russian crime syndicate called Hotel Moscow headed by Balalaika (voiced by Mami Koyama) and it is all out war with Revy (voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi) and Eda are caught in the middle.

The second storyline has Revy and Eda stumbling on a counterfeiter named Jane in a church–”The Church of violence”, Jane was being pursued by a gang of lowlifes. Rock (Daisuke Namikawa), Revy and Eda have to fight off the hordes led by knife specialist Shun Hua, a fiero-maniac and a creepy chainsaw wielding chick. The third storyline (which was originally done in English) takes us to Revy and Rock’s paddle to Japan to help Balalaika’s negotiations with the Washimine clan of Yakuza. Runt do they know that the Russian crime leader has her gain plans, that puts Rock and Revy in a very compromising residence with a young teenager named Yukio (Houko Kunashima) and her master swordsman called Ginji (Kiyoyuki Yanada) .

The series is not your children’s anime. “Dismal Lagoon the 2nd Barrage” is a thematic affair midst all the action and mayhem. The screenplay by Sunao Katabuchi expresses its themes through its very strong shimmering dialogue and even by its characters’ mannerisms and action. I do absorb that this series displays some of the most effective definitions of existentialism as I’ve ever seen. Revy and Rock are opposites, Rock is more of an optimist while Revy sees themselves as “objective objects”. There are also quite a lot of atheist views as demonstrated by our characters as it is a approved idea of existential ideas. According to existential viewpoint, “subjective values” are what drives people in their choices and in the plan that different folks have their possess subjective values. As illustrated with the Yukio character, which saw her confinement to sure boundaries.

Cause and Do also plays a share in this season’s screenplay when it partly touches upon the origins of Balalaika. She was shaped by her experiences in the army when she served the Soviet Union. Some of the series’ strongest point would have to be the conversation between Yukio and Rock as well as the origins of the twin murderers. They were mighty and quite disquieting. “Hansel and Gretel” the twins are very creepy and their experiences as abused orphans certainly got under my skin. Choices and familial duty are delved upon with the strong dialogue. Yukio wishes for something resembling a normal existence but she is inevitably shaped by her fill circumstances. There are also some very sensitive issues in atheism, incest is mildly hinted at and alienation is definitely effectively portrayed. The last storyline also hints on rape and has a very strong graphic show of violence against women. (surprisingly the series has a unexcited amount of nudity) The dialogue is very sharp-tongued and veteran, (has sexual references) please attach the kids to bed when you discover this.

The action is the series is nicely placed and keeps its very strong momentum. I opinion the storyline with “Hansel and Gretel” (murderous twins) and the third one with the Yakuza clans were the series’ main “meat” and showstopper. The storyline with the counterfeiter was inviting but not really thought-provoking as the two. It was a welcome change in tone, as the series has a straight face; despite the doses of gloomy humor. Also, “Dismal Lagoon” has a cast of awesome characters aside from Revy, Dutch, Benny and Rock. Shun Hua is a sexy assassin who uses an assortment of knives, there is one unstable killer who can’t talk without her gizmo who uses a chainsaw, there is Japanese bodyguard who can sever a bullet with his katana and a unusual oddball called “the Wizard”. The action consists of fist fights, gunplay (as served up by Revy and Eda) ; and the encounter with Revy’s two “sword-cutlass” custom guns and Genji’s katana may be worth the ticket of the collection itself.

“Shadowy Lagoon the Second Barrage” is one huge collection and obliging to be included in any anime fan’s shelf. The series has a very conventional tone and while the animation by Madhouse studios may have some bits of anime conventions (over expressive facial expressions), the direction and screenplay was solid and methodical enough for it to avoid being a senseless demonstrate of action and mayhem. Chief director Sunao Katabuchi managed to retain the series grounded even with the assortment of directorial talent (different directors helmed different storylines) . Revy and Eda characterize a strong “girls with guns” attitude that can connect with all audiences and its thought-provoking undertones can satisfy those looking for “exact meat” in the storyline. If “the Third Barrage” comes, then I am ALL in! The Second Barrage is one delicious anime experience.

Highly Recommended! [4 ½ - Stars]

Note: Using the unique Japanese Language track is advisable.

Video/Audio: 1.78 anamorphic widescreen that looks very valid. Desirable, vibrant and arresting. Japanese Laguage/English Language 2.0 and English 5.1 DTS track.

One of the more striking elements of this series, beyond the constant f-bombs and gushing blood, is the ancient design the writing treats the characters and the audience. Now some anime can be mind numbing and others can be so deep as to be opaque, but Unlit Lagoon sets a balance, especially because it’s character driven.

Distinct, there’s “why are we here” discussions, but it’s more like the character asking “why am I here specifically”. There’s a contrast. In the last site arch of the second season Rock comes to some very profound realizations about himself in somewhat grievous circumstances. It’s an piquant twist since Rock is supposed to report an “everyman” in an environment that most of us probably couldn’t survive in… but that almost exists in some parts of the world. Also in this chronicle Rock and Revy rep to delve deeper into their fill relationship, although it’s mostly co-dependent co-denial. For her section Revy considers herself “already listless” but she’s not past the point of caring about what Rock wants or needs and putting herself in situations that are against her “principles” to aid him. The writers never give away the advantage of making their relationship as complex as they want to.

Another refreshing element is simply the chronicle structure. Four or five episode situation archs that are largely self contained. There are a few references to earlier plots and maybe a few flashbacks but most all of the myth is fully within the arch. I wish more series, even live action types, worked that plot. No instant resolution but no meandering road going nowhere.

I deem this movie, while quite gracious and very different, is a shrimp overrated. A sequel/remake of “Executioners from Shaolin”, Gordon Liu (always safe) must boom to select revenge after the destruction of the Shaolin temple. Disaster is that his foe, the white-eyebrow priest, Pai Mei (Lo Lieh, directing and reprising his illustrious role, and also always righteous) is practically invincible; having achieved a level of kung fu expertise beyond the mere physical. Gordon trains and trains but his style is ineffectual and must learn the “soft style” from the comely Kara Hui, whose husband was killed by Pai Mei. She makes him sew and engage care of her newborn baby, an inspiring dissimilarity to the “crane style” of “Executioners”.

This version from Red Sun is wonderfully restored by Celestial. The fight scenes are hit and miss, no pun intended. There are moments of excellence for positive, objective…I can’t quite set my finger on what bothered me about it, if anything. Maybe I fair heard too many salubrious things about it and it didn’t live up to the hype. I’m not distinct if I would recommend this to the “casual” fan or not. I have friends who loved “5 Deadly Venoms” and “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” but didn’t care for movies like “7 Expansive Masters”. If you like most Shaw Bros. films, you’ll probably like this one too.

While calm is a very advantageous remake ( one of the best in a very long time ), Gordon Lui is in rear fabricate…! I mediate in this remake, he’s probably assuming the role of ‘Ting-Ling’…(Hun Se Kwan’s) son — taking on an avenging role for his hide dad. What I contemplate I like the most about this film is the opening scene which kinda shows in a different interpretation…, the destruction of Priest Bai Me and his brother by two mercenary shaolin patriots. Really stuuning stuff. It’s brilliantly done overall —- again it kinda borders on the amusing side of things…, which I never really liked…., but it’s a’ight!

Both of these movies are extremely consuming and gracious for the entire family. The Apple Dumpling Gang is better than its sequel due to the interactions of all of the major stars. Susan Clark is valid as Dusty, and Bill Bixby is fabulous and believable as Donovan. The children do an superior job and appear to have well-behaved on mask presence. I would recommend it for children of all ages, including adults who are young at heart.

The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again is favorable, but it relies more on slapstick than the first movie. You miss the parts of Dusty and Donovan and the children. It is also a cramped confusing that Harry Morgan plays in both productions, but plays two separate characters. They could have said that he was the Justice of the Peace’s twin brother or a discover alike relative. Of course he always does an noble performance in whatever portion he plays.

This enormous DVD package combines two of Disney’s classic movies - The Apple Dumpling Gang and The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again. The movies document the careers of Amos Tucker (played by Tim Conway) and Theodore Ogelvie (Don Knotts), two of the most incompetent outlaws to jog the Obsolete West.

In The Apple Dumpling Gang, cardsharp and conman Russel Donovan (Bill Bixby) is conned into taking on three children. But, when they involve Amos and Theodore in his life, things expeditiously go from awful to worse.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Apple Dumpling Gang / The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again! Click Here

In The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, Amos and Theodore advance out of retirement, just in time to plunge afoul of Marshal Woolly Bill Hitchcock (Kenneth Mars), who is certain to conclude the Apple Dumpling Gang insensible in its tracks…literally. So, where can they cloak?

Overall, I found these to be two tremendous movies. The Apple Dumpling Gang has a better defined state, and Bill Bixby and Susan Clark do an top-notch job of providing a romantic, if not entirely serious, side to the movie. The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again is indeed more slapstick - Don Knotts and Tim Conway stole the first movie, and as such they are given free rein in this one - perhaps too noteworthy, as the movie does seem to have a remarkable less cohesive place than the first.

But, no matter how you slash it, this is a mammoth DVD situation, one that is clear to please the family. As a matter of fact, beyond the two movies there is a sizable Goofy cartoon - Two Gun Goofy. Yeah, this is a large DVD area, one that should be in the library of every family with young one around…or even those honest young at heart. My family and I really enjoyed this spot, and we highly recommend it to you and your family.
