Review
“The employee life cycle approach to this text offers students the ability to understand the employment process, from beginning to end, while considering the legal environment and its implications for business success. Walsh’s personnel law book provides a solid foundation for students to successfully navigate the always changing and rarely certain areas of personnel law within an organization.”

“Of all of the texts that I reviewed, this one has the most practical and usable advise for soon-be-HR practioners. The life cycle approach is strong and the writing easy to read.”

“My students love the book and HR majors hold on to it as a reference.”

“I use the chapter questions a great deal for class discussions. I love using them by section to spice up conversation and see if the students can apply what they?ve learned. I think these are one of the single most valuable elements of your book!”

“I recently graduated from Central Ohio Technical College as a Business/HR major. One of my classes?used your textbook called “Employment Law for Human Resources Practice” I just wanted to say that I enjoyed the textbook and found it very informative and humorous in some cases. Thank you for writing such a good HR reference textbook.”

Customer Reviews:

Classic, fundamental5
This book is 150 years old, but the information within it is timeless. Langstroth’s observations on bee behavior and his awe at nature’s wonders are as relevant today as they ever were. If you are interested in “how we know what we know,” then this is book is mandatory. Langstroth amply credits earlier naturalists: Dzierzon, Huber, etc., making this book a bibliography of sorts for historical apicultural research. This book is the lynch-pin between modern beekeeping and earlier disparate investigations.

Indispenable beekeeping primer5
After reading this book, I can fully appreciate why Rev. L. L. Langstroth was dubbed “the father of modern beekeeping”. As a novice beekeeper, I am always on the look out for “how to” books on beekeeping. I wish that I had read this book BEFORE I setup my first hive; I would have been able to get my bees through their first year with a lot less stress on them and me. The book explains the reasons behind the bees behavior - this is invaluable information, for just like training a dog or a horse, if you can understand what is motivating their actions you can better shape the results to your needs and desires. I highly recommend this book to both novice and experienced beekeepers - get the book, read it, and practice its principles - you will be glad you did!!

Informative, but curiously flawed3
I’m editing this to add that the publisher, Dover Publications rapidly responded to my query in regard to the manufacturing error explained below, and sent me a replacement copy. If I were able, I would increase my rating to 4 stars. It misses getting five because, while it contains much information that is both valuable and valid today, substantial portions of the text are devoted to convincing the skeptics of the 1850’s.

To canvass the beekeeping territory, I picked up a few titles on bees, including Langstroth’s Hive and the Honeybee, which appealed to both my desire to raise bees and my interest in American History.

I was quite surprised then to find that at page 160, Langstroth’s exposition on artificial swarming ends in mid-sentence. The next 30 pages are devoted to the heros of Celtic mythology. Though I am of Scots and Irish descent, I knew next to nothing, of Celtic mythology beyond that cribbed by T.H. white. Thanks to a production error at Dover, I can now sustain 15 to 20 minutes of cocktail party banter about the Welsh name, Caledvwlch, of Arthur’s sword, Escalibur, (from, mind you, the Latin Caliburnis) and the parallels with, if not blatant plagairism by, Malory, of the Cuchulainn stories, as the foundation stones of Arthurian legend were set in place.

Aside from this flaw however, Langstroth remains a powerful primer on the beekeeping art. One well worth reading in an age where organic methods hold promise in the effort to combat Chronic Collapse Disorder.

When Reverend Langstroth developed his methods of hive management, organic beekeeping was the only kind that existed. His discussions of the means and methods for combating the parasites and diseases that afflicted bees 150 years ago are as applicable today when it appears that commercial bee operations must radically change or perish, as they were before and after the civil war when chemical means for bee management simply did not exist.

Quaint in language, Langstroth nevertheless delivers, and while I purchase my hive equipment from a modern manufacturer, I am confident that armed with only Langstroth and the tools my great grandfather left me, I could build an equally good, and substantially similar hive.

As modern petroleum based agriculture begins to sway and collapse under the weight of genetically modified organisms, hydrocarbon based fertilizers and pesticides, leached out soil, antibiotic resistant strains of disease, subsurface compaction, and the erosion of topsoil, it is delightful to discover that the knowledge of largely preindustrial agrarians has been preserved. Their methods remain reasonably achievable today and demonstrate a possible pathway back to small scale, sustainable production methods largely free of the industrial accoutrement under which farmers stumble to remain profitable today.

The Shadow of the Sun Description:

In 1957, Ryszard Kapuscinski arrived in Africa to witness the beginning of the end of colonial rule as the first African correspondent of Poland’s state newspaper. From the early days of independence in Ghana to the ongoing ethnic genocide in Rwanda, Kapuscinski has crisscrossed vast distances pursuing the swift, and often violent, events that followed liberation. Kapuscinski hitchhikes with caravans, wanders the Sahara with nomads, and lives in the poverty-stricken slums of Nigeria. He wrestles a king cobra to the death and suffers through a bout of malaria.
What emerges is an extraordinary depiction of Africa–not as a group of nations or geographic locations–but as a vibrant and frequently joyous montage of peoples, cultures, and encounters. Kapuscinski’s trenchant observations, wry analysis and overwhelming humanity paint a remarkable portrait of the continent and its people. His unorthodox approach and profound respect for the people he meets challenge conventional understandings of the modern problems faced by Africa at the dawn of the twenty-first century.

Sympathetic, Savvy, Simply Magnificent5
“Oh, no,” you may be thinking, “another ‘I Found Africa…’ book” by a white journalist who’s poked around a bit, extruded the steamy and the exotic, romanticized this, excoriated that, along the way raised a few primoridial terrors to jolt his well-meaning liberal readers, and all in all, told a few ripping yarns.

This man is different, beginning with his more than forty year relationship with the African continent. Great writers like Kapucinski–and he IS a very great writer, assisted by a great translator, Klara Glowczewska–teach us how to see, how to find the right context, how to set out the proper perspective. Most of those who read this book will be Westerners in search of a window. As an introduction, as an intimation of the myriads of Africas–because, as Kapucinski freely acknowledges, it’s unfair, and somewhat insulting, to speak simply of “Africa”–and, yes, as an interpretation for Western minds, readers could do no better than The Shadow of the Sun.

For all his his vivid prose and artistic control of story elements, Kapucinski is a scholarly observer, a man who sees through the deep ice, seemingly an anthropologist refitted as a journalist–his eye is uncanny, his descriptive powers precise and powerful, and his range of experiences and depth of understanding makes this a uniquely valuable tutorial. He writes with clarity and fresh insight on familiar topics like Amin, Sudan, and the Rwanda genocide–his “lecture” on the events of 1994 is one of the book’s many highpoints–but also on the sensations, struggles, and states of being that accompany the simple act of living in so challenging an array of environments as Africa’s geography provides.

Yes, Kapucinski does include exotica, but without sensationalizing: there are harrowing encounters with flora, fauna, disease, the elements and, again and again, the terrible heat (which he finds as many ways of describing as the proverbial Inuit has of describing snow). But Kapucinski always returns to human dimensions and conditions and, above all, to the patterns and rhythms and variations of human exchange around which life in the many Africas organizes itself. And, always, he seeks to convey and to understand the point of view of his many interlocutors, rather than to make facile attributions or easy generalizations.

This is superb reportage and an essential document by a true master. It is to me staggering that, published by the same house as Robert Kaplan (of The Coming Anarchy fame) and sensitively covering the very turf that so alarmed Kaplan, Kapucinski remains comparatively unknown. Fix that.

Beautifully written account of Africa’s recent history4
I was mesmerized by Kapuscinski’s account of his travels through Africa during the last 40 years. For me, someone who has not yet been to Africa and has always been confused by the politics of that continent, this book helped greatly in sorting out the issues, politics and history of that region. Kapuscinski is a brilliant writer and, more importantly, a brilliant story teller. Visions of certain related stories play through my head as if a part of my own distant memories, such as his killing of a snake, his night in a cockroach-infested hotel room in Monrovia, his descriptions of heat and sunlight. My only complaint about this book is that it dwells too much on the negatives of Africa. Surely somewhere there are beautiful cities, or at least sections of cities. Although the history, personalities, and misdeeds came through strongly, the beauty of this continent did not.

Great reading…5
More than just a docier or biographical narrative, “Shadow of the Sun” is a series of impressions rendered by a writer of exceptional talent, considerable experience, and profound vision. The vignettes capture episodes from the author’s experiences on the great continent over a span of more than thirty years. His goal is not to provide a primer in contemporary African history, or to sermonize about the region’s poverty, famine, violence, or painful political upheavals. As other’s have mentioned, there are other books more suited to these pursuits. His goal is to convey moments of elation, terror, awe, and desperation experienced over the course of a long and distinguished career as a journalist.

Ryszard Kapuscinski is a not an historian, a political scientist, or a sociologist - he is a teller of tales, and a master of language. These stories move, astound, touch, and disturb the reader. The essays expose the highest, lowest, and most absurd types of human behavior, setting all against the limitless and impassive backdrop of the African continent.

The essays in “The Soccer War” and “Imperium” might overall be more unified and cohesive, but in the world of contemporary literature, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Amazon.com Review
When Africa makes international news, it is usually because war has broken out or some bizarre natural disaster has taken a large number of lives. Westerners are appallingly ignorant of Africa otherwise, a condition that the great Polish journalist and writer Ryszard Kapuœciñski helps remedy with this book based on observations gathered over more than four decades.

Kapuœciñski first went to Africa in 1957, a time pregnant with possibilities as one country after another declared independence from the European colonial powers. Those powers, he writes, had “crammed the approximately ten thousand kingdoms, federations, and stateless but independent tribal associations that existed on this continent in the middle of the nineteenth century within the borders of barely forty colonies.” When independence came, old interethnic rivalries, long suppressed, bubbled up to the surface, and the continent was consumed in little wars of obscure origin, from caste-based massacres in Rwanda and ideological conflicts in Ethiopia to hit-and-run skirmishes among Tuaregs and Bantus on the edge of the Sahara. With independence, too, came the warlords, whose power across the continent derives from the control of food, water, and other life-and-death resources, and whose struggles among one another fuel the continent’s seemingly endless civil wars. When the warlords “decide that everything worthy of plunder has been extracted,” Kapuœciñski writes, wearily, they call a peace conference and are rewarded with credits and loans from the First World, which makes them richer and more powerful than ever, “because you can get significantly more from the World Bank than from your own starving kinsmen.”

Constantly surprising and eye-opening, Kapuœciñski’s book teaches us much about contemporary events and recent history in Africa. It is also further evidence for why he is considered to be one of the best journalists at work today. –Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Colorful writing and a deep intelligence highlight these essays’ graceful exploration of postcolonial Africa. A Polish journalist who has written about the continent for more than three decades, Kapuscinski provides glimpses into African life far beyond what has been covered in headlines or in most previous books on the subject. The dispatches focus on the awkward relationship between Europe and Africa. Kapuscinski, whose books have been translated into 19 languages (they include The Emperor and The Soccer War), makes this clear through his own personal struggle with malaria soon after he first arrived on the continent. This emphasis also comes through in his dispatches on African nations such as Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania and Rwanda, which detail how the giddy optimism of the immediate postcolonial era disintegrated into corruption, poverty and conflict. But even as he describes a familiar story, his keen observations make it fresh. Writing about the provincialism of Rwanda, he says, “A trip round the world is a journey from backwater to backwater, each of which considers itself… a shining star.” But political observations are just one of the strengths of this book. Kapuscinski’s seemingly effortless writing style makes daily life come alive whether he’s covering an Arab vendor making coffee or the efforts made at night by lizards to catch their mosquito prey. (The lizards’ “eyes are capable of 180-degree rotation within their sockets, like the telescopes of astronomers….”) Ultimately, this book is a personal and political travelogue of one man’s rocky love affair with a continent of nations. Those looking for an engaging, literary introduction to Africa or even for some additional knowledge should look no further. (Apr.) Forecast: Kapuscinski is a very popular writer in Europe but has never broken out here. With a cluster of books on Africa coming out this season, this will get some media attention and may sell better than his previous books.

From Booklist
Internationally renowned Polish foreign correspondent Kapuscinski has covered the Third World for more than four decades. During much of this time, he has lived and worked in Africa, establishing a reverential bond with a continent that continues to defy classification. In this enthralling memoir, he chronicles his remarkable 40-year odyssey through various African countries poised on the brink of massive social, political, and cultural revolutions. In an effort to capture and communicate the essentially unpredictable and ephemeral nature of Africa, he often traveled off the beaten path, encountering a wide variety of ordinary Africans willing to share their unique views and stories. This lyrically evocative patchwork quilt of memories, experiences, and adventures provides an intimate portrait of the dazzling mystery that is Africa. Margaret Flanagan

SUPERMAN: In Memoriam5
The middle entry of the epic saga of the Man of Steel’s death and resurrection, “World Without a Superman” is a roller-coaster ride both emotionally and physically. As the world cope’s with the death of their favorite superhero, the realization that crime and violence will still continue becomes apparent. The hole that Superman’s death left is felt by all, from the kids who roam the streets, to the reporters who write about him. But there are sinister things at work, including an attempt to steal Superman’s body for the purposes of cloning him; and the fight for Superman also continues in the hereafter.
While it does drag at times, “World Without a Superman” is an exciting and emotion-charged sequel to the epic “Death of Superman.” And the events of this book set up the events of the epic conclusion: “The Return of Superman.” Fans are sure to be enthralled!
Grade: A

Touching5
Hot on the heels of perhaps one of the most controversial takes on the Superman charcater, DC takes us to a world where life continues without a Superman’s presence. It points how the Man of Steel held against his people and other heroes. A number of the World’s Finest make their appearance. Even Batman, who is known to be the coldest and most calculating of all heroes makes a cameo here, which just reverbetates the power of the storyline. A great deal is discussed about Big Blue’s influence on a number of people, but the most touching and the true driving force of all this was how the people close to Supes’s alter ego react. Lois, his parents and even Jimmy Olsen are portrayed to view the loss and each scene with any of them sure makes you think how these people looked up to the big man. The story does bridge the gap between Bog Blue’s death and return. Since this is a trade paperback, collecting individula comics, DC had to do this as part of a marketing plan to hold their audience captivated after Superman’s death. they could not bring him back full blast, which is rediculous to say the least, so they bring out a human story that can be considered the other side of the action motivated coin of his death.

A truy touching tale, portraying the love and meaning of how life can trul feel like after the death of a dear one.

The Aftermath of The Lost Battle5
What happens when a Superman dies? This is the second trade paperback after The Death of Superman. The series was orginally titled Funeral For A Friend. Basically, it picks up after Superman’s death. We watch how many lives are touched by it everyone from a street peddler to his parents. When I started reading comics in 1993, I picked up part three of this series. The scene that did it for me was when his parents decided to hold their own memorial and bury the things that meant that most to him (things that included a teddy bear and a baseball glove). This is the middle block between the Death and the Return. It is worth a read.

Sometimes they talk all night long. In the still darkness of their cell, Molina re-weaves the glittering and fragile stories of the film he loves, and the cynical Valentin listens. Valentin believes in the just cause which makes all suffering bearable; Molina believes in the magic of love which makes all else endurable. Each has always been alone, and always - especially now - in danger of betrayal. But in cell, each surrenders to the other something of himself that he has never surrendered before.

for the footnotes5
Since there are already so many reviews for this excellent book, I will limit my contribution to a few comments on the footnotes. They are not mere postmodern flourish, nor are they superfluous. They function in several ways. First, they mark a certain reception of psychoanalytic theory in Argentina. Secondly, although in the beginning they correspond to the story (in the tradition way that footnotes do — as elaboration on a point that cannot be contained in the narrative) they begin to loose their direct correspondence as the story continues. This “unraveling” corresponds to the unraveling of the framing device (most importantly the telling of stories), which traditionally is a narrative structure that functions to hold sexual desire at bay. In other words, the footnotes lose their hold as the characters become closer, sharing more personal facets of their lives, and eventually becoming sexual. In this way the footnotes subtend the narrative in such a way as to track sexual desire and the confusing and contradictory aspects (and theories) that attend to it. I think it is essential to read the footnotes along with the narrative since they add to Puig’s experimental narrative style. If they are confusing, that is the point. Unexpected desire, like love, always is.

Don’t read this, read the book!!5
This book was recommended to my by a very enthusiastic friend, and I must say, having finished the book, I understand why. Roughly, the story is about two men in prison: Luis Molina, the homosexual window dresser, and Valentin Arruiga Paz. That, however, only begins to describe it. It’s also about movies: Molina tells the plots of movies, partially to pass the time, partially because these movies — living these movies — is his escape. He prefers the movies from the forties and fifties, with the real divas, short hair, lots of blood-red lipstick . . . The movies aren’t just time-passers, either: they reflect the events of the book.

The style is one of the most outstanding features of the book. It is almost entirely in dialogue, with some brief spates into play-format and a couple of police reports. It varies with the setting. There are also a couple of sections in stream-of-consciousness, where one receives Molina’s movies as he thinks of them, no bothering with sentences. It all contributes to a wonderful effect.

I have, however, heard, that although this is the only translation available, it isn’t the best. For example, Molina refers to himself as a woman throughout the book in the Spanish version. Although this isn’t as possible in English, one could have made more of an effort, to preserve the feel of the original.

So go learn Spanish (if you don’t know it already) — but read this first!

One of the all-time greats…5
We tend to divide ourselves into groups: male, female, gay, straight, conservative, liberal… KOTSW reminds us that, underneath all of the labels, we are all human, and we can all change for the better when we want to. The simple power and beauty of this story overwhelmes me each time I re-read it. Puig created a pure microcosmos with his tale, and let it develop beautifully. I’ve gone through two copies in English, and my Spanish copy is in tatters. KOTSW is one of the most important stories of the latter half of the century, and should not go ignored.

During the last decade, the martial arts world has looked to innovative mixed martial arts competitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship to determine which fighting style is the best. These contests have repeatedly shown the grappling style of martial arts, headed by Brazilian jiu-jitsu, to dominate. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu style stems from the premise, garnered from analysis of actual street fights, that the outcome of any fight is decided on the ground. While most martial arts deal only with the initial punching and kicking stages of combat, Brazilian jiu-jitsu concentrates on ground combat. This guide shows how to use Brazilian jiu-jitsu to increase combat effectiveness. Photographs and step-by-step instructions show how to master the techniques used in this exciting new form of combat.

Outstanding5
This is arguably one of the best books on the subject. As an author of 13 books on the martial arts and a collector of over 300, I feel it’s money well spent if I can learn one technique or concept from a book or video. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory & Technique contains dozens of techniques that are easy to understand and easy to follow.

The photography is clear and the descriptions are easy to grasp. If you train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu you must have this book, and if you follow one of the many punch/kick arts, you will find this an outstanding text that shows you what to do when the fight turns to grappling.

I highly recommend this one.

Doesn’t get any better: here’s your Jiu Jitsu Bible5
I’ve got a few BJJ books, but this one takes the cake. It’s a virtual bible of technique, clearly explained and demonstrated (hard in a book sometimes) and with a typical Gracie attention to detail. You won’t be able to learn BJJ from a book, but if you’re a student–like me–you’ll LOVE this because how many times have you learned a new technique and then forgotten it? Or at least a key element to it? You’ve got it just… up… to… this… point… and then you can’t remember the finish.

That’s why this book rocks: go look it up! You’ll find yourself saying “AHHHH… dammit! THAT’S it! That’s what I forgot!” It’s awesome for that reason.

It’s not particularly loaded with super-advanced techniques, but you ought not be worried about those until you’ve mastered all these–and this will keep you busy for a long, long time.

I saw this book at my BJJ school and came home to order it ASAP. This is as good as it gets. I know the Grappler’s Manual is also supposed to be incredible, too, but I have not yet seen that.

Buy it. You’ll be using it for years.

Best of the Best5
I have been involved in the martial arts for most of my life and I teach both Judo(black belt) and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu(blue belt) and this is the best book I have every seen on Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. In fact this is one of the best martial arts books I have ever read, period! The quality is top notch, color pictures, great background information, theory, excellent explanations of over a hundred techniques, and authored by two members of the Gracie family. Since the Gracies created Brazillain Jiu Jitsu you can’t get a better source.

I am at a satellite school under Rickson Gracie and I do not always have a black belt to ask questions so this book is an excellent reference. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu or grappling. If you are a Brazillian Jiu Jitsu practitioner then this book is a Must! Usually I do not write reviews but this book is so good I thought I should.

The only drawback to this book would be if you just want to learn grappling without a kimono(uniform). All the moves are based on using the Kimono. Although there are explanations on what you would do to modify some of the techniques to be used without the uniform. I would still recommend this book even to those who just care about kimono-less grappling(no uniform). Most of the moves can still be used without the uniform you just have to know how to apply them.

Brazillian Jiu Jitsu has the changed the face of the martial arts. This book will teach you what makes this art so effective.

STATE PARK CHALLENGE5
We just purchased this book a couple of weeks ago, and we’ve already visited three of the suggested state parks. The format is attractive with a nice picture from each park, detailed information on the park, and suggestions for other attractions in the area. It is laid out by region: “New England,” “Southwest,” etc. with about five states in each region and about 4-5 parks from each state. We live in Texas, and although we think there could be other parks mentioned in the book for our state, we agree that the choices are representative of the variety of state parks here. We have already visited two of the suggestions in Oklahoma (which we found has great state parks) and one in New Mexico which was beautiful. Our goal is to visit ALL of them over the next several years! We’ve always enjoyed staying in state or national parks while camping - now in our new AirStream trailer (yeah!), but any traveler could visit these parks as day trips, also. Besides being informative, it’s a great read.

Great Guide5
National Geograhic does as great of a job highlighting the state parks as they did for the national parks.

They can’t cover every state park but they do a thorough review of 4-6 parks from each state (they allowed each state to recommend their best parks). Plenty of info. is provided regarding camping, activities, best times to visit, trails to hike, specific areas to visit and things to see, etc.

A Waste of Money!1
A real disappointment! Only a few of the state parks in each state are listed. The info provided is good, but it’s very incomplete. Not a good resource for an RV-er.

“Beautifully illustrated in color throughout, the book displays the same map, picture, and production quality that readers have come to expect from National Geographic publications.” —Chicago Sun Times

Simply a Must Read5
If you ride hunt seat and you only buy one book this is the book you should own. If you own more than one book this is the one you should read first AND last. George Morris breaks down every task into simple to understand steps with concise instructions and helpful pictures. As my trainer once told me, if you can follow George Morris’s instructions, you’ll be an excellent rider. I simply cannot say enough terrific things about this book!!

The Hunter-seat bible5
I set a goal, less than two months ago to return to riding (10 years ago, I was a walk-trot) and learn how to jump before next year. Not only am I jumping, I’m the trainer’s favorite demonstrator for her more advanced students! My secret is this book. Another trainer told me to read it, and she couldn’t have given me better advice (no really, she couldn’t). If you’re a hunter-seat rider and if you want to really know what you’re supposed to be doing, instead of guessing and second guessing your trainers’ wishes, read this book!

A good base for all styles of riding.5
I have read and reread this book and consider it my equitation bible. It is not only for huntseat riders but the basics apply to all riders. Mr. Morris is one of the finest equestrians I know of. I own a first edition of this book and whenever I have a question I go to the master. I have always ridden according to the principles set out in this book and though I ride stockseat now , the same principles still apply. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to ride or to veteran riders.
