Wow, after all these years, the first season of In Living Color is being released on DVD. I’m so indignant to recognize Men on Film/Football/Vacation, Homey D. Clown, and the rest of one of the greatest comedy shows of all time. It’s where Jim Carrey got distinguished, and we all learned the best ways to insult someone’s Mama. For anyone who loves to laugh for long periods of time, this is definitely a bewitch for you. Am I going to miss out on this status? I don’t deem so… Homey don’t play dat…
“In Living Color” was so current, energetic, and hilarious when it first hit the Fox airwaves that you wondered how it could possibly withhold up that level of entertainment. Well, it couldn’t, exactly, but those first few shows, and many moments during the rest of the season, were insanely amusing and groundbreaking.
Like all helpful sketch comedy, “In Living Color” immediately location out to fabricate its believe collection of recurring crazies (rather than the original SNL-method of mostly relying on celeb impressions), and gape at how many unexcited resonate: Fire Marshal Bill, the Men on Film, Anton, Homey…and so on. The show’s genius is that it went for laughs anywhere it could - it could be richly satirical or downright humorous and scatalogical, often in the same sketch. It basically counted on the intelligence and variety of its audience in a contrivance that we haven’t seen since, except maybe with “The Daily Exhibit.” “In Living Color” was edgy to the point of discomfort sometimes, but we wanted that too - everything else felt saccharine and grand next to “ILC,” and we were ready to push some boundaries.
Eventually “In Living Color” would degenerate into low-minded skits based on grotesque impressions, gross-outs, and cruelty. But for one brief incandescent moment - captured on this DVD space - we all wanted to live In Living Color.
