…Kubrik masterminded Dr. Strangelove, loosely basing the movie upon the book “Red Alert” (the book is a completely serious Chilly War nuclear war scenario, but Strangelove is a complete and total farce) . “Strangelove” came out a year or two after the Cuban October missile crisis, a year after US President John Kennedy was assassinated as well as 2 other contemporaneous films, the shining and paranoid “The Manchurian Candidate” and the serious treatment of the same book, “Fail Proper.”

Kubrik originally situation out to do a serious treatment of the book. But Kubrik found as he tried to invent the screenplay that he kept running into scenes that he ended up writing as satire. Pickens was apparently no gigantic wit, so Kubrik was able to retain Pickens completely unaware that Pickens was actually playing in a comedy, not a serious war movie (one can only steal that the humor of the position was not lost on the other cast members, including James Earl Jones who played Capt. Other than Peter Sellers’ roles, George C. Scott (later in “Patton”) and Capable Hayden delivered memorable performances. Both were obviously instructed to play their roles “over the top.” Kubrik instructed Scott to overact the role of the cigar-smoking, gut-slapping, martini-drinking & womanizing General Buck Turgidson (accept it? Turgid-son? ) . In the scene in the war room where Turgidson exuberantly proclaims the spectacle of a B-52 bomber evading radar by hedge-hopping, Kubrik instructed George C. Scott to deliberately overact the fragment. Kubrik had Scott re-take the scene several times, asking Scott to earn it even more over-the-top than before. On the last prefer of that scene, Scott practically performed it as a burlesque parody, which was of course, the final occupy that Kubrik actually conventional.

When Pickins died in 1983, CBS news anchor Dan Rather delivered the obituary replete with the out catch of Pickins riding the bomb (Perhaps DeForest Kelley topped that and made suited on his threat to have “He’s boring, Jim” engraved on his tombstone….) .

It’s not exactly a plot secret that the “Disney Treasures” DVDs have been gargantuan money-makers for the company. So how do you squeeze a slight extra cash out of a cash cow? Why, originate throwing spicy shorts onto DVD without remastering them, that’s how!

The shorts themselves are largely second-tier Disney, with a few bona fide masterpieces such as “Ferdinand the Bull.” Others explain that when the Disney artists tackled a fresh field (such as UPA-style microscopic animation in “A Cowboy Needs a Horse,” or dimensional animation in “Noah’s Ark,” with its fanciful found-object animals) they could do it better than fair about anybody else. Kids may become a tad restless at times, but animation fans and Disney completists will be in heaven.

Bottom line: If Disney’s going to call these shorts “Treasures” they should treat them as such.

Among the four Disney Treasures DVD sets that came out this year for Wave 5 of the celebrated collection, Disney Rarities, Chronological Donald Volume Two, Legendary Heroes, and Straggle and Marty, I do possess this is the station I was most anticipating. “Disney Rarities: Well-known Shorts” collects some of the most loved one-shot Disney shorts upright alongside some of the most unseen! Starting all the plot encourage with Walt’s early Alice films and carrying all the draw through to 1962’s “A Symposium On Accepted Songs,” the mixed bag that is this 2-disc collection provides treat after treat of delicate animation, charming stories and songs, and fond childhood memories! Alice’s Egg Plant (1925) : Sadly, Virginia Davis is replaced by Anne Shirley in this short. Also, the charming live-action sequences give contrivance to total animation, aside from the inclusion of live-action Alice, of course. In this epic, there’s anguish on Alice’s egg farm when a fowl Russian bird incites a strike. Luckily, Alice and her cat Julius concoct a view!

Alice In the Jungle (1925) : Virginia is wait on one more time for this record of animal hi-jinks and lion fighting adventure.

Alice’s Mysterious Mystery (1926) : Margie Pleased plays Alice in this short where she and Julius go up against an early version of Pete who is an execrable dogcatcher turning his captive mutts into sausage! Yes, this is a disturbing cartoon!

Alice the Whaler (1927) : Lois Hardwick plays a slightly older Alice, who sails the seas with her animal friends in a cartoon that features a potato peeling mouse in sequences seemingly identical to those in the following year’s “Steamboat Willie!”

Ferdinand the Bull (1938) : This cartoon is our sudden jump to color and sound (not including the music that accompanied the preceding Alice shorts) . This is the Oscar winning memoir of Ferdinand, a pacifist bull that unprejudiced loves to sit and smell flowers, mistakenly chosen to fight in a bull ring when a bee sting makes him appear ferocious and wild! This is one of those classics you’ll likely remember from your youth, and it also features caricatures of Walt and his animators.

Chicken Exiguous (1943) : No, this isn’t Disney’s novel, computer-animated feature, this is a classic short about not believing everything you hear and read, with a curved but very comical ending! I enjoy this is one of the several Academy Award nominees in this collection!

The Pelican and the Snipe (1944) : And, here’s another, I enjoy. One of the many shorts Disney did with Fine Holloway (the fresh announce of Winnie the Pooh) as narrator, this is the cute wartime yarn of a sleep-flying Pelican and his trusty and protective, sleep-deprived friend living together on a lighthouse in Uruguay. The Puny House (1952) : This heartwarming classic, based on the children’s book, is very similar to the oddly absent from this space “Susie, the Small Blue Coupe.” It’s the legend of a itsy-bitsy house who grows aged, lonely, and dejected while the world around her changes, but in the kill gets cheered up by unique owners, a modern locale, and a current coat of paint.

Adventures In Music: Melody (1953) : Originally released in 3-D (a first for an American entertaining film), but objective as toothsome in 2-D, this is the first of the Professor Owl shorts where he teaches his class stout of young birds all about the world of music. Very scrumptious animation.

In the Bag (1956) : The other Humphrey the Maintain widescreen cartoon in this status, this hilarious short has Ranger Woodlore scheming to utilize the park bears to elegant up after the tourists. When the reward becomes a toothsome dinner, Humphrey tries and tries but can’t seem to retain his fraction shapely! This butt-bumping extravaganza even features a cameo by Smokey the Fill!

The Truth About Mother Goose (1957) : This memorable conventional fave is one of the gems of this plot! Telling the grim, apt tales slack the nursery rhymes “Diminutive Jack Horner,” “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary,” and “London Bridge Is Falling Down,” this highly gripping short is splendid sad for a Disney cartoon!

Paul Bunyan (1958) : The bigger-than-life anecdote of Paul Bunyan the giant lumberjack is told here from his infancy to his retirement in a unbelievable stale Disney celebrated!

Noah’s Ark (1959) : Stop-motion animation and household items are dilapidated for a change in this narrative from the pages of Genesis in the Bible. Noah builds a vast Ark to carry two of every animal, along with his family, through a flood that covered the entire globe in customary times. This reasonably right and jazzy cartoon is gigantic fun, though maybe it runs a tad long when it gets into some unnecessary Hippo romance subject matter. Aloof, very grand dinky short!

The Saga of Windwagon Smith (1961) : Some may disagree, but I accept this to be another of the best shorts in the region! Windwagon Smith is the large fable of a sea captain with dreams of sailing over the American plains in a covered wagon that is allotment sailing ship! It’s a very fun and imaginative legend!

A Symposium On Accepted Songs (1962) : And, finally, my accepted cartoon on this location, simply because who doesn’t fancy Ludwig Von Drake, especially coupled with tons of Sherman Bros. music! Also lovely worthy a featurette at 19 minutes and 44 seconds in length, “A Symposium On Favorite Songs” is hosted by the oddball relative of Donald Duck who takes us through the history of common music in America, until 1962 at least. He does this for the most allotment by playing timely songs that he wrote himself, running with visuals of stop-motion cut-out animation same as was ragged for the opening of the new “Parent Trap.” For Ludwig fans, this cartoon is really the highlight of the discs! Paul Frees is hilarious!

As an obsessive Disney fan, I am likely to assure you that ALL the Disney Treasures sets are a must have, and hold `em coming! I certainly have them all! But, even for the collector who doesn’t pick up every tin box that Disney puts out, “Disney Rarities: Noted Shorts” is a must! Positive, there are some shorts that are oddly absent. Some of them are available on other Disney releases though. Many seem likely to appear in an educational shorts plot in the future, hopefully. I’m dying for “Scrooge McDuck and Money,” “Winnie the Pooh Discovers the Seasons,” the “What Should I Do” series, “Harold and His Wonderful Green Plants,” and Jiminy Cricket’s shorts, among others. I also am desperate for a reliable, unedited release of “Minute One,” Sport Goofy in “Soccermania,” and “Fluppy Dogs,” to name a few. And, to be fair, even if they can win a bit redundant, I’d like to gather as many of the over 50 Alice shorts (that have not been lost) as possible. Nevertheless, this place is a Genuine cherish! Extras include a amazing interview with the current Alice, Virginia Davis, alive to intros by Leonard Maltin that some rep annoying but I have no pickle with (there is only one per disc this time, and we really should regard this man as a hero, anyway), the VERY short advertisement cartoon “A Feather In His Collar,” starring Pluto, a glowing timeline featurette showing us Walt’s history up to the introduction of Mickey Mouse, a absorbing audio commentary for “A Symposium on Well-liked Song” with Richard Sherman and Leonard Maltin, and, of course, a few selective art galleries. Yes, there is talk on the disc of an excerpt from a Disneyland episode detailing the making of the “Parent Trap” opening credits, however, it seems none of us have been able to locate that in the status except as snippets during Maltin’s intros. The plot comes in the expected snapcase within pleasing tin box, though they are continuing with not printing anything on the succor of the tin and not including the paper band, and within is the standard, handy booklet, the numbered certificate of authenticity, and a nice collectible card featuring Paul Bunyan promo art. It all makes for a graceful package for the Disney fanatic. Can’t wait for wave 6!

I bought these disks with some trepidation. I was about ten years passe when Star Blazers seared across my conciousness. I loved the demonstrate deeply at that time. I finally decided to go ahead and splurge on the DVD’s, nervous that I was wasting my money on a half-remembered reveal that would no longer be impressive to a 30-year old-fashioned.

I was defective. Wonderfully obnoxious.

Sure, the animation is gross. You can actually look marks and debris on the glass plates ancient for the animation. Distinct, some parts are cheesy. Determined, some of the violence was mitigated for the American version. Certain the science varies from wonderfully legal to ludicrous. But this is smooth an unbelievable series — one of the best pieces of sci-fi to ever arrive the itsy-bitsy shroud. I watched the last ten episodes in one night.

In brief, this DVD covers the first season of the Americanized version of the classic Japanese anime series Site Battleship Yamato (itself an expansion of a movie) . Earth is under attack by the mysterious Gamilons, who are bombarding the planet with lethal radiation bombs. The planet has one year of life left. But a call from a distant planet in the Magellanic Clouds promises a cure to the radiation and provides them with recent technology to construct the lumber. The star blazers board the resurrected battleship Yamato (rechristened Argo for the American version) and build a desperate slouch to build the human hasten.

I guess the reason this had such appeal to me as a kid and I aloof worship it is that it never talks down. The characters create over 26 episodes into fully realized characters. Complex plotlines (Wildstar’s loss of his family, Avatar’s sickeness, Wildstar’s and Nova’s budding romance) obtain gently. Characters have a realistic chance of being killed (many die) . It turns out the Gamilons have reason of their maintain for invading Earth — they’re not impartial putrid monsters. And the finale - a desperate battle in the Magellanic Clouds, the arrival at Iscandar, the return to Earth — is beautiful.

The DVD’s approach with plenty of animated extras — a history of Gamilon, a tour of the Argo, etc. But that’s gravy.

If you’ve never seen Star Blazers before, you might want to rent the series or acquire one disk before making a tremendous financial commitment. If, like me, you have vague but elated memories of the indicate, go ahead and splurge. You won’t be sorry.

The half-hour cartoons which ensued were nothing short of miraculous to kids weaned on Looney Tunes: furiously intense miniature snippets of a slight band of heroes in a tricked-out World War Two battleship in a desperate struggle against cross aliens.

This was no “G.I. Joe,” folks—the stakes were high, and people got harm. The captain of the Argo spent distinguished of the swagger battling radiation poisoning, the heroes were invariably placed in precarious situations and occasionally were lost. While the Star Force won most of the battles, these victories were dearly bought; many episodes ended with the ship limping along leaving mammoth smoke trails in its wake.

Now “Star Blazers” has finally arrived on DVD.

I started watching the first episode, and hurt up sitting in front of the TV oblivious to everything around me until I watched all 6 DVDs (about 12 hrs in all) . Despite a transfer showing no improvement over the muddy images which danced across my 13″ color cover all those years ago, this series Quiet has the power to hook the unwary.

In addition to the 26 first series episodes, the DVD edition also includes a ton of nifty special features providing a wealth of background information. My particular accepted is the interactive mission device detailing the Argo’s entire spin to Iscandar and wait on with episode-specific summaries of key events.

I’ve seen a lot of Japanese manga since “Star Blazers” first bombarded my eyeballs, but slick production and hard-boiled storylines pale in comparison to the ominous warning at the waste of each episode: “Hasten, Star Force! Earth has only 256 days left!”

The Zapruder film is the most crucial allotment of evidence we have from November 22, 1963; Image of an Assassination gives you access to the Holy Grail of JFK assassination evidence.

Here it is in all it’s gory glory. The most indispensable relate from that fateful day in Dealey Plaza - the Zapruder film. I bought a copy of this film on VHS when it first came out in 1998. I don’t catch whether it had all the extras that this version has but it’s nice to finally believe it on DVD. I unbiased finished reading Robert J. Groden’s The Killing Of A President (an obedient collection of photographic evidence) and wanted to plan the Zapruder film one more time. This DVD contains 4 different versions of the assassination as well as the entire interview of Abraham Zapruder from later that day and the entire Goodnight America segment (featuring Groden) . We owe Abraham Zapruder a debt of thanks for being in the accurate region at the immoral time to characterize this historic footage. Thank you Abraham.

Both of these movies are based on the books by father and son historians Michael & Jeff Shaara. Gettysburg is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book “The Killer Angels”. No school library should be without these two improbable films and the related books. These movies were filmed using reinactors and are very realistic and very stop to staunch events. These films were made by Ted Turner and fragment of a trilogy. The third movie about the defeat of the Confederacy may or may not be completed (PLEASE Ted do the film!!) . A fourth movie “Andersonville” is about the obnoxious southern prison camp (not for the squeamish!!) .

I cannot recommend these movies highly enough. They are Substantial films for every American to opinion at least once so that they understand how poor the Civil War really was. Very moving and not to be missed.

Since many of you reading this are likely familiar with the movies themselves, or the stories therein, I will refrain from repeating them here (as so many other reviewers have already done) . Allow me, though, to comment on the nature of the discs themselves and a brief summary of the drawl therein.

First of all, this is an wonderful value for the ticket. Not only do you fetch “Gettysburg,” which runs over 4 hours in length, but you also receive “Gods & Generals,” which is an additional three-and-a-half hours. When combined with the special features (interviews, documentaries, etc.), you have well over eight hours of Civil War film in one slender DVD case!

(Since it has both discs in one normal case, it will not lift up any additional room on your shelf. Additionally, the construction of said case will prevent the discs from sliding about and scratching on each other. I have yet to have any problems with either disc in removing or replacing it from it’s holder, as well) .

Regarding the mutter, let me say first that the special features on both discs are impressive. There are no deleted scenes that I purchase, but there are some immense documentaries, maps, interviews, and bios for each movie.

As far as the movies themselves, “Gettysburg” is by far the better film. There are some unbelievable performances on both sides of the blue and gray, particularly Richard Jordan’s last role, Stephen Lang, Jeff Daniels, Tom Berenger, Martin Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Kevin Conway, and Sam Elliot. In fact, it’s hard to point out any awful performances at all. (Fuqua’s makeup wasn’t extraordinarily convincing, but otherwise, not a unpleasant J.E.B. Stuart) . What I also appreciated greatly was the equal treatment that each side is given. While we are introduced to more Confederate personalities than Union, there is equal veil time given to both sides. As the main dramatic thrust comes from the Confederates (climaxing with Pickett’s Charge reach the destroy of the film), it is understandable why more would be known and shown from their standpoint. Aloof, Maxwell treats both sides fairly and with equal emotion. The recreation down to the finest detail was exemplary and a standard by which all historical films should follow.

I disagree with the decrying that is done over “Gods & Generals,” though, but I have to concede a few points. Perhaps most noticeable is the fact that instead of one battle, G&G spans two years almost and several key battles. Instead of focusing on a singular moment (as in “Gettysburg”), the film tries too hard to squeeze that considerable history into a slightly shorter timeframe. Additionally, the movie definitely has a distinct Confederate slant to it. In some action sequences, the Union losses are exaggerated to comparative invincibility on the Confederate side. (This was somewhat lawful at Fredericksburg, though, and that particular battle is quite shapely to history) . There is certainly also remarkable more Confederate hiss, as the Union side is almost treated as a background player. Granted, the legend mainly revolves around Stonewall Jackson and his career in the war, but even major players like Lee are nearly glossed over, despite strong performances (including Robert Duvall’s as the aforementioned Lee) . Considering the tide of the war, as well as the timeline to that point, though, this is somewhat forgivable. There is the same attention to detail and accuracy that made “Gettysburg” so vast, but it is nearly lost to the overwhelming slant that the film contains. (Supposedly, the final book in the Shaara trilogy, “The Last Paunchy Measure,” takes on the Union side more so than this film, but it remains to be seen whether or not that will ever be made) . I would like to add, though, that the opening sequence alone is worth picking up this film. Mary Fahl’s haunting and enthralling song “Going Home” is space against a backdrop of various flags of regiments from both sides of the conflict. Though this equality in treatment is not carried through the film, the sequence itself is though-provoking and emotionally charged. As I said, the opening credits alone are worth viewing.

Overall, I highly recommend this dual collection. The main reason why I could not give this review five stars was for the shortcomings of “Gods & Generals.” Quiet, that should not hamper your select of this extraordinary collection. For a very cramped increase in ticket (at last check), you can gain both films with a enormous total of over eight hours of footage (likely more than nine with all of the various extras) . Not only is this a expansive bargain, but they are fabulous films as well. “Gettysburg” will long stand as the far better movie, as “Gods & Generals” might have attempted to overachieve, but they are fabulous as educational tools and standards for military history cinema that will not soon depart away.

There are only three episodes on this last DVD, but the final episode itself is a must-see. It really makes you believe - or, barring that, you at least pick up to peruse the anime’s one elaboration on the manga sequence, Tomo clapping her hands over her ears as Yomi cheerfully ’sings’ the graduation song.

With a series as beneficial as Azumanga, you sort of wish it could go on forever; but portion of its charm is that it exists in steady time, and the characters, innocent though they might be, are always faced with the dilemma of growing older and losing touch with the familiar. The humor effortlessly gives scheme to something profoundly touching.

The final three episodes of the Azumanga Daioh anime deals with the girls studying for their college entrance exams. As Chiyo-chan is going to peek in America, she doesn’t have to eye. Instead, the cute twelve-year feeble invites her friends to her house to examine, during which she makes snacks for them. However, her comment that it’s laughable how time passes sinks into them, how they had all sorts of adventures and fun together as students, and now it’s about to approach to an destroy.

The ample cat-loving Sakaki finally becomes delighted at the kill when she is reunited with a dear friend from Okinawa. In disk 2, arresting the Current Year’s Dreams, the orange Azumanga cat tells Sakaki she must gain a true cat. That is now done, but what was all business with the grey Kamineko (biting cat) who was hostile to her? The analogy is the kawaii (cute) culture, exemplified by Hello Kitty and here, the plush toy of Necoconeco (Cat/Kitten) . Sakaki yearned to be cute instead of frigid. However, in order to cessation from being looked down by her admirers, such as Kaorin, she had to set up a cold façade. Thus, the orange cat telling her to regain a proper cat really means, “secure your fair self; accumulate your maintain sort of cute.” The biting cat was basically telling her, “You’re not one of us.” The scene of her rolling on the floor with her unusual cat defines her occupy sort of cute, as like her, the cat is current.

Osaka’s detached quite the character. She loves kotatsus, the warm heated table prevalent in Japan. I’ve sat in one and it is so cozy, one could descend asleep, fair like Osaka does. The usually placid Osaka gets furious for the first time, and it’s at Tomo! However, the understanding of her as a teacher makes me laugh. Yes, she’d design students with “flexible ways of thinking,” but why not? Personally, I assume she’d create a expansive abstract artist or terror myth writer.

One moment that sticks is when Yomi comes in and Chiyo tells them that everyone else is studying. Yomi then sees Sakaki playing with her cat, Osaka sleeping at the kotatsu, and Tomo reading a laughable magazine. “Studying? ” she wonders aloud.

Chiyo becomes the central figure in these episodes. It’s she who prays for everyone to pass and waits for them outside the entrance exam hall. Chiyo also tells Sakaki she was cute in a plan when she saw her rolling on the floor, embracing her cat. She’s always there for her friends and makes them omamori (charms) wishing them to pass.

Things don’t glean too sentimental at the graduation scene, though Chiyo ends up crying while they order the graduation song. However, Ms. Yukari, their teacher, doesn’t seem too prick up about them going and acts callously here. When she is told that the bouquet her students gave her is a flower from each student, she hurtfully says out loud, “I wonder whose flower will wilt first.” In incompatibility, Ms. Kurosawa’s students give her a surprise welcome and thank her for all she’s done for them.

It all ends happily, with Chiyo-chan realizing that despite graduation, they’ll always be together, and individual headshots of the girls in turn. If a spinoff series is in the works, I wish they’d do one where the star is either Chiyo, Osaka, or Sakaki.

Bonus stuff: art studies of Tomo, some male and female students, and the pencil cases of the usual girls. In the Azumanga mini-movie, a ten runt dry speed for the series, gives the characters a rougher but glossier sort of search for Basically, it’s a condensed version of the antics of the series, Chiyo getting a 100, the team of Kagura, Tomo, and Osaka’s 103 pick up, and Chiyo’s pigtails, which topple off due to Osaka’s intervention.

Clark Wayne (George the Postman from Toy that Saved Christmas) narrates the sage, which begins at Doodle’s Trudge Yard when Huge Jim (Apollo Gourd) escapes. While the other employees are paid, Jim has been paying off his debt to society after his conviction of stealing Turkey Jerky. A conviction he serene flatly denies.

Meanwhile, Tomato Sawyer (Bob the Tomato) and Huckleberry Larry (Larry the Cucumber) are fair days away from earning the land they’ve been homesteading from the government. Huck wants to start an amusement park dedicated to Turkey Jerky, while Tom plans to begin the first tax preparer service in the state. And he’s not letting the fact that this is 1904, 9 years before income tax started, regain in his intention.

But when Expansive Jim’s path crosses theirs, anguish ensues. Huck knows they need to benefit, but Tom is reluctant. Will they do the factual thing? And if so can they calm win their land?

Meanwhile, there is the notice modern amusing song, featuring Archibald Asparagus as he leads a road prance to “The Biscuit of Zazzamarandabo.” And anyone who has ever been on a road tear will like it.

Frankly, anyone will cherish this entire DVD. The account is rapid challenging with plenty of gags for the kids, but there are so many jokes that only the adults will fetch as well. I was laughing quite a bit all the intention through. The lesson about helping others is strong without being preachy. And they’ve even got some find jabs at Cliff’s Notes.

This is another winner from the guys at Large Notion. The entire family will admire it.

We purchased yet another Veggietales video and once again we were not disappointed. In this adventure Tom and Huck exclaim everyone that sometimes we have to set aside others ahead of our bear ambitions. I always catch myself watching the videos honest as hard as my son. Balance between hardened warring factions and juvenile lesbian encounters. Balance between richly drawn character models and computer generated set battles. For the most piece, the formula works. Without a doubt the show’s greatest strength lies within its pacing. I can go as far as to say that Strain contains the most explosive first episode that this author has yet to encounter. By the time the credits move to dusky, you’ll be left catching your breath while thinking, was all that really impartial the first episode? The pacing slows a bit in subsequent episodes but considering that it has only 13 episodes with which to advise its record, there are few, if any, dragged out moments. The action-laden roam is quite consistent as well with the only exception coming in the produce of the seventh episode where a contrived attempt at humor puts the focus on an obsessed lesbian’s attempt to fetch Sara’s affection.
