The Road to Avonlea Series is a intelligent family generous series fit for both the young and the outmoded. It lacks Disney like kitschy sappiness and provides enough human substance to satisfy a stauch Krysztof Kieslowski fan like me.
My four favourite characters - I can’t resolve which one I appreciate watching the most - Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert), Sarah Polley (Sarah Stanley), Jackie Burroughs (Hetty King) and Patricia Hamilton (Rachel Lynde) - each is a delight to look. The rest of the cast is genuine too. I absorb the first two seasons on DVD so far and will preorder the subsequent releases.

The DVDs are however disappointing in that they are double sided and lack many special features. The describe quality has improved from the unpleasant MPEG compression artefacts of the first season boxset however. This series is highly recommended despite the technical flaws of the DVDs.
Watching this series truly brings to mind my have childhood where I primitive to have many tickled adventures with my friends in our petite town. In this second season, young Sarah Stanley & her friends rep more adventures, with the introduction of some current characters.

How Kissing was Discovered : the blossoming Felicity King pines for cherish, and suffers a crush… also we are introduced to a current character, a young man who has a dusky past.
Aunt Hetty’s ordeal : Hetty King is visited by her stale rival, Ms Stacey [the very same Ms Stacey, Anne’s mentor in Anne of Green Gables]
Of Corsets, and Secrets, and Proper, Right Love: Rachel Lynde, and an outmoded flame? Marilla takes in two orphaned relatives, grand to Rachel’s chagrin, and the ensuing pandemonium is hilarious.
Old Quarrels, Musty Love: Hetty King and her musty beau are reunited. A gloomy episode.
May the Best Man win: Olivia King is wooed by two men, the righteous Jasper Dale, and the pompous ex-beau who abandoned her once before.
Family Rivalry: The other King sibling returns for a brief visit,but things are not all rosy with the King clan.
The Sea Ghost : Michael York plays an ragged seaman here.Gus Pike’s past returns to haunt him.
All that Glitters : the possibility of hidden adore on the island proves too hard to resist for Sarah, Gus and friends.
Dreamer of Dreams : focuses on Jasper Dale
It’s Objective a Stage: Sarah’s aunt, a well-known stage actress comes to visit, with unsettling consequences.
A Mother’s Love: does one have to have experienced childbirth to be a ‘real’ mother? Avonlea is abuzz with the essay competition for Mother’s Day.
Misfits & Miracles: Ms Stacey brings a directive that the Avonlea school is to field a hockey team, and Sarah tries to learn how to skate. Also, the theme of development in the town is highlighted here.
The second season is as first-rate or even better than the first. The storylines spin smoothly, and the acting is suitable. We also contemplate the development of some of the characters, such as Gus Pike, whose tale is developed this season. Olivia and Jasper are edging closer to being more than friends, and Sarah is truly at home in Avonlea. This is one of my common television series, and reminds me of a grand more innocent time, when children truly lived their childhoods, and where splendid values were treasured and honored.
