The sets and costumes are really really great, but the highlight of this film is the truly wonderful acting on the part of William Hurt. He plays the elusive, eccentric country noble Mr. Rochester exactly the way he should be played. He’s quietly passionate, sexy, and smoldering, while still exhibiting signs of being a real stuffy gentleman. Inwardly tormented, Rochester is perfect.

Charlotte Gainsbourg takes on the challenging role of the title character, petit and plain Jane Eyre. Gainsbourg’s unearthly prettiness adds immeasurably to her character, but she represses some of Jane Eyre’s passion that we find in the book. The chemistry between Gainsbourg and Hurt is tense and shaky - exactly how it should be.

Zeffirelli has created the best screen version of this book that I have ever seen!

Oddly enough the Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel ‘Jane Eyre’ has had more cinematic transitions than almost any of the old novels. The story is powerful but with the frequency of film adaptations, even the story grows tired, unless someone breathes new life into the interpretation. In this case that breath comes from director Franco Zeffirelli who has engaged Hugh Whitemore to open the story as a screenplay. The results give a different emphasis to the story and one that for this viewer works well.

In this particular incarnation the rags to riches heroine Jane Eyre is played with subtlety by the beautiful Charlotte Gainsbourg (with Anna Paquin as the younger version) and Rochester the master of the manor is a William Hurt, playing his character more for life and flesh than the usual darkly sinister keeper of secrets. What results from the combination of cast and crew is a film that is far more a romance than a vapid mystery: the fire between Jane and Rochester is palpable and is given more space and time than the other versions which elect to dwell on the mad ‘wife’ upstairs finally destroyed in the fire that brings Rochester down to Jane’s initial stance on the social scale.

The cinematography by David Watkin captures the period beautifully as does the musical score by Claudio Capponi and Alessio Vlad. As with all period pieces the cast of supporting characters paint the various aspects of the novel and here such luminous actors as Joan Plowright, Geraldine Chaplin, Joséphine Serre, Maria Schneider, Elle Macpherson, and John Wood among many others offer fully realized portraits of the class distinctions that ruled the era. This is a fine film version of the Brontë novel and one well worth watching repeatedly. Grady Harp, October 06

“Masterpiece Theater” has long been a benchmark in bringing quality British TV to American viewers. With a prestigious history, some legendary programs–including “Upstairs, Downstairs” and “I, Claudius”–have found acclaim, awards, and international audiences. Of late, “Masterpiece Theater” has been showcasing some ambitious literary adaptations with mixed results. Last season’s high point, and a must for any lover of film, was the flawless adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Bleak House.” A triumph in every regard, and featuring Emmy nominated turns by Charles Dance and Gillian Anderson, this program should be essential viewing for those that value literate, classy and wildly entertaining TV. This season’s offerings have included “To The Ends Of The Earth” (an adaptation of William Golding’s seafaring trilogy–’Rites Of Passage,’ ‘Close Quarters’ and ‘Fire Down Below’), a robust new version of Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” a reimagining of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” and the swan song of Helen Mirren’s Jane Tennison in “Prime Suspect 7.”

What can one say about “Jane Eyre” that hasn’t been said before? Being familiar with the novel and countless prior adaptations, I’ll admit that I wasn’t all that excited to revisit what I consider to be a very familiar tale. However, I diligently sat down to watch the latest 2 part “Masterpiece Theater” production. And, boy, am I ever glad that I did. While there are some liberties taken with the source material, that’s to be expected. Anyone who envisions every adaptation of a novel to be a literal translation is denying the power of the film medium to create new and enduring art. In fact, it often annoys me when people carp on how something is different in lieu of accepting the merits of the interpretation. This “Jane Eyre” succeeds so well due to the credible romantic relationship, the intelligent screenplay, and the genuinely haunting quality of the central mystery.

While this version breezes past Jane’s difficult childhood, it effectively settles into the heart of the story–when Jane takes a position at Thornfield Hall. Jane becomes fascinated by her new employer, Mr. Rochester. The two interact believably, and as Jane gets past Rochester’s gruff exterior and erratic mood swings–she starts to have feelings for the man. Part One of this miniseries details the evolving, but chaste, relationship. In addition, the mysterious goings-on at Thornfield are excellently depicted. I was riveted by everything in this first part–particularly the intelligent banter between the two leads and the underlying sense of dread that exists in the manor. Easily 5 stars, the first half of this miniseries is flawless. In Part Two, physical romance blossoms and secrets are revealed in a very satisfying way. However, as “Jane” fans know–there are still plenty of obstacles in the way of true love. As the story wanders away from Thornfield, the program loses some of its momentum and its magic. It’s still a good adaptation–but when the leads are separated, it loses a bit of its spark.

In case you haven’t guessed, I was thoroughly impressed by Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens, as Jane and Rochester respectively. Wilson is the perfect Jane–intelligent and appealing. It’s hard to imagine someone not falling in love with her, she’s so sensible and caring. Stephens does a terrific job, as well. Playing the tortured Rochester, he is a trapped soul that’s yearning, but unable, to escape. While referred to in the dialogue as ugly (which he’s not), it is also easy to see why this man would be a challenge for and an equal to Jane. A wonderful combination, Wilson and Stephens make this “Jane Eyre” sing. Even if you’ve fallen in love with other versions, there is a vital romanticism that distinguishes this lovely film. For me the Timothy Dalton version could not have been bested, but I was wrong. The Dalton version,so faithful to the original novel is still excellent, though on re-viewing seems locked indoors and low-budget.

The Dalton version gave the story about 6 hours, with a substantial amount of time spent on Jane’s childhood at the horrible boarding school.

Again, this was straight from the novel, but, let’s face it, for those of us who know the story, we’re waiting for her to grow up and meet Mr. Rochester.

Now, on to the current version. The story remains a great mixture of seething passion, frustrated hopes on both sides, and the struggle within one heroine between steely, virtuous, self-reliance, and a simple desire to be loved. Toby Stevens is younger than the hero is often portrayed, but still looks as if he’s seen the world and fought against the unhappiness and cynicism that years of dissipated living can bring. He is handsome, but not pretty. Ruth Wilson’s Jane is written as chaste but not priggish, lonely but eager to love, and, most especially, strong and independent, but in no way inappropriately feminist for the 19th century of the setting. If anything she’s a bit more physically passionate than we’ve seen before, but it does make her seem more real.

The budget is high and it shows–lots of gorgeous outdoor scenes, beautiful period interiors , sumptuous gowns. Here and there there are some breaches of Victorian etiquette that don’t ring quite true, and there are of course some deletions and skimping on some of the story lines,particularly with the Rivers family. However, I think once the decision was made to have this fit into 4 hours, the plot choices they made were mostly good ones. There is great chemistry between the two principals and most importantly, they seem entirely believable and at home in the period of the story. Spoiler warning: the final scene struck me as little too Hollywoody and ’sunny’ for what is essentially

a Gothic-style dark novel (madwoman in the attic and all) but at least it is nicely romantic.

A few months ago I watched both this 4-hour BBC production and the more recent A&E version starring Ciaran Hinds and Samantha Morton in one sitting … an Eyre-athon! And in my opinion, this version EASILY won hands-down as the best (I’ve already seen just about every other filmed version). I’ve since watched it many times and never tire of it. If you love the novel, what a glorious, breathtaking treat this is!!

Yes, this production is long (good news for Bronte fans!) and it has a somewhat dated feel, but both the casting and acting are so brilliant that you won’t want to watch any other version!

Timothy Dalton IS Edward Rochester… it’s that simple. I don’t care that other reviewers claim he’s too handsome. Dalton is attractive, certainly, but no pretty-boy. In fact he possesses a craggy, angular dark charm that, to my mind, is quite in keeping with the mysterious, very masculine Mr R. And he takes on Rochester’s sad, tortured persona so poignantly. He portrays ferocity when the scene calls for it, but also displays Rochester’s tender, passionate, emotional side as well. (IMO the A&E production suffers in that Ciaran Hinds - whom I normally adore - seems to bluster and bully his way throughout. I’ve read the book many times and I never felt that Rochester was meant to be perceived as a nonstop snarling beast!)

Whenever I reread the novel, I always see Zelah Clarke as Jane. Ms. Clarke, to me, resembles Jane as she describes herself (and is described by others). Small, childlike, fairy… though it’s true the actress doesn’t look 18, she portrays Jane’s attributes so well. While other reviews have claimed that her acting is wooden or unemotional, one must remember that the character spent 8 years at Lowood being trained to hold her emotions and “passionate nature” in check. Her main inspiration was her childhood friend Helen, who was the picture of demure submission. Although her true nature was dissimilar, Jane learned to master her temper and appear docile, in keeping with the school’s aims for its charity students who would go into ’service’. Jane became a governess in the household of the rich Mr. Rochester. She would certainly *not* speak to him as an equal (as Samantha Morton does in the A&E version). Even later on when she gave as well as she got, she would always be sure to remember that her station was well below that of her employer. Nevertheless, if you read the book - to which this production stays amazingly close - you can clearly see the small struggles Zelah-as-Jane endures as she subdues her emotions in order to remain mild and even-tempered.

The chemistry between Dalton and Clarke is just right, I think. No, it does not in the least resemble Hollywood (thank God! It’s not a Hollywood sort of book) but theirs is a romance which is true, devoted and loyal. And for a woman like Jane, who never presumed to have *any* love come her way, it is a minor miracle.

The rest of the casting is terrific, and I love the fact that nearly every character from the book is present here. So, too, is much of the rich, evocative dialogue. This version is the only one that I know of to include the lovely, infamous ‘gypsy scene’ and in general, features more humor than other versions I’ve seen. In particular, the mutual teasing between the lead characters comes straight from the book and is so delightful!

Jane Eyre was, in many ways, one of the first novelized feminists. She finally accepted love on her own terms and independently, and, at last, as Rochester’s true equal. Just beautiful!

Now, WHEN WILL THIS BE RELEASED ON DVD?

EDIT: This has just been mastered and released on DVD in its original unedited format, which means a whole extra hour of footage… it’s now 5 hours instead of 4, woot woot! You KNOW I’m happy! Buy it NOW!!

I’ve seen every version available (even the Scott/York one), and the Dalton/Clarke version is light years ahead of them all.

Timothy Dalton IS Rochester….passionate and vulnerable, flawed and ALIVE, his very existence tainted by that one “fatal error” that wrecked his past and threatens his future (with Jane). He drew me in completely, making me feel all of Rochester’s conflicting emotions, aided by a delightful script that was faithful to Charlotte’s great book. Whole passages of dialogue appear to have been excerpted, and oh! did those words ring true when filtered through Dalton’s resonant, warm, perfectly-accented voice. His performance was so magnificent, I was able to suspend disbelief over the one flaw in casting him–he really *is* too good-looking (technically speaking) to play Rochester.

As for Zelah Clarke, she simply made Jane Eyre come to life, straight from the pages of Bronté’s book, and there is no better compliment I can give her. I’ve heard some say that she was too “old” to play Jane, but she had such a grasp of the character, embodying Jane’s very mannerisms, that honestly, this point never even occurred to me while watching the video. Now THAT’s the mark of a great performance!

This video is a definite “must-buy”—one to be watched and savored over and over again. Enjoy!
