I thought this movie was funny, but I think it would have been funnier with Smokey. If you haven’t seen the first one, watch it before you view this one or you may find it a bit confusing. If this movie had Smokey in the cast, I would have given it 5 stars. Overall, it is definetly a movie worth watching if you are up for a laugh.
Friday was a cult hit, by far the best ghetto flick so far (or at least joint with Menace II Society) and a greatly subtle parody. Then along came another…
Next Friday, lacking Smokey, was always going to be a film that by no means could attain the level of its predecessor. But, nonetheless it was a great laugh and did nearly reduce me and others in the audience to tears and aching sides at points. Still there were colourful characters and great comic situations that made the first a riot, just here to not quite a large degree. Cube’s movement from ghetto to ‘burbs was certainly a gamble, but I reckon it paid off so that this sequel didn’t turn into merely a clone of the first to cash in on the success. The ‘Ese’ element prooved very comical, as did the dog, but there was a little too much of the “35, 45 minutes” gag that did begin to get annoying. Fans of the first will still like this one and for them it is well worth buying.
It did have one thing above the first - Cube’s sex interest was one of the finest things on screen I’ve seen in a while, but maybe that’s being a little bit too superficial.
