Subtle but welcome upgrades5
I purchased this Wenger backpack bag over 2 years ago from a local Best Buy, and immediately loved it. The big problem (for me) with previous backpacks is all of the contents rest near the bottom of the bag (gravity in action). This bag however, offers 3 compartments for storing items such as keys, USB sticks, iPods, even heavy power adaptors in pockets “sewn” to the top. This results in a very balanced bag and quick access to items frequently used.

Although this bag is durable and travels well, over time and worldwide travel, the bag started looking a bit tattered. So I purchased a new one on Amazon (through samscause.org) expecting to get the same bag. However, Wenger has made several key additions and upgrades that make this bag even harder to beat.

Now, each compartment is fully lined. The bag now has a stiffer bottom allowing it to sit more upright. They’ve removed the useless waist belt, freeing up space and the annoying buckle in my lower back. The side zippered pockets are now much larger and more useful. The padded computer compartment offers much better protection and is more form-fitting. In summary, I got much more than I’d anticipated.

Finally, I’ve read other reviews that stated 15.4 wide-screen laptops don’t fit. I have an HP/Compaq nc8230 business 15.4 wide-screen laptop, and it fits perfectly (14.1″ x 10.1″ x 1″).

My only negative (not reflected in my rating) is I wish the bag was available in all black. Perhaps then it would appear a bit more “business-like” which is relatively important in my job. But every laptop backpack I’ve tried (including the $485 Tumi) doesn’t offer near the functionality of this bag. So function wins over appearance in this case.

This is the first review I’ve ever written on Amazon. That’s how impressed I am with this purchase and this backpack bag.

Fits 15.4 widescreens w/ ease4
I read a few reviews which stated that there is no way that this bag will properly fit a 15.4″ widescreen laptop. I just bought the bag and it fits my Dell Inspiron E1505 (which seems like a “full” sized 15.4″ widescreen) easily.

I just wanted to set the record straight for anyone who is looking for a bag but afraid that their 15.4″ widescreen won’t fit. Unless you have some gigantic machine that I haven’t crossed paths with, you’ll be happy with this bag.

PS - I first bought a OGIO Nyquist from eBags and found it to be a POS… unconfortable, HUGE, and my laptop didn’t even fit into its ridiculous side zippered pocket.

Awesome backpack for school!5
I was looking for the perfect bag to carry my books and laptop at college, and this is it! It’s got a ton of pockets including room for a 15.4″ laptop that straps securely in a padded pocket. Even with the laptop in the bag you can fit books and notebooks with no problem. I also carry around my AC adapter and a car charger with no worries. It’s got a hard shell on the bottom of the bag to protect your computer from damage if it’s dropped. You couldn’t ask for more!

Customer Reviews:

Slow storage with lots of room3
I bought this as a backup for my upcoming week long trip that I don’t want to bring along the laptop. Also partly to satisfy my curiosity as to how much I can get away with for the cheap price of this one. I bet my luck partly on the Kingston pro reputation. Well, I was quite a bit disappointed.

Just tested it on 40D high speed continuous shooting in RAW, also tested are 4GB SanDisk Extreme III, 4GB Ultra II/15ms, 4GB Ultra II regular, 8GB Transcend x133. Of course, Extreme III is the fastest. but this Kingston is the slowest, to my surprise. Because the Transcend x133 did better than the Ultra II regular, so I was expecting the same for this Kingston. Not so. Also, when I tried “Erase All” on all these cards, Kingston also comes last, by quite a bit. To be fair, Extreme III isn’t that great with burst RAW shooting either - once the initial burst is completed (camera buffer filled), the recovery speed is only acceptable - a little wait, then I can do 4-5 continuous shots, then a small wait again. But the other cards basically all take forever to complete the writing - the difference is between longer forever vs slightly shorter ones. That makes wonder how people use 1Ds. 40D only got 10MB after all. Then again, people lived with 34/36 frame films for a long time before the digitals. So what do I know :)

I sorta expected to be on par with the Transcend x133, but turns out, Transcend is quite a bit faster in both read and write. Hey, I still got a 16GB for the price of 8GB, didn’t I? :)

Bottom line, this card is definitely slow. But perfectly usable if you are not in a hurry. And from what I’ve heard, Kingston got a pretty good reputation. But if I were to do this again, I probably would have opted for the Extreme III 8GB than this one, they are about the same price right now.

P.S. Now I found a great use for this card - on my 5D! 5D’s super slow processor is a great match to this card. I tested 5D with this and Sandisk Extreme III, no difference. Once the camera buffer is full, nothing in the world is gonna help. So now this card sits in my 5D and does a great service for me. Not wasted after all. The only thing is, don’t try to fill the buffer on 5D, you’ll regret if you do :). For those who got 5D MkII, this card’s usefulness is perhaps open to question…

Big and cheap5
I bought this CF card for the sole purpose of replacing my iPod Mini’s 4GB microdrive.

It worked right out of the box. Now I got 16GB inside my iPod and turned my Mini into a flash based player now.

Been a slow device and without constant writes (like a DSLR), I don’t know how this card stands against the competition. Since, for my DSLR I get known brands and speedy cards, even if they cost much more.

If you want something cheap and don’t plan on using them on middle to high-end products that depend on speedy writes this will fit your device just nicely.

Reliable and inexpensive4
This is definitely not the fastest chip around however if you need a reliable chip that has lots of room this definitely fits the ticket.

I have used this chip w/ a Canon 40 D capturing High Quality JPEGS and also RAW. When shooting JPEGS I have not had an issue w/ speed. When shooting action shots in RAW it does tend to lag a bit. However for my typical use it works just fine.

For over 2 months it has been the main chip I shoot with and has had a lot of use (probably over 6,000 shots in total.) I have not experienced any problems with the reliability of this chip.

Customer Reviews:

Initial reactions4
I’m very pleased with this netbook! I’ll break my review into different aspects of the device, to try to keep things relatively organized.

AMAZON PACKAGING
No issues here, perfect. I ordered mine overnight, so it came via FedEx. The box was easy to open, and there was sufficient packing material inside.

APPEARANCE
Very attractive case on this. The faux carbon fiber (it’s not REAL carbon fiber, wish it were) pattern is very slick looking. I will say that I’ve only had this one day, and there are a couple of scratches on the surface–nothing serious, and they’re only visible at certain angles, but it sort of sucks, and I’d recommend getting a case for this thing, such as the Case Logic PLS-9 Ultraportable Netbook Sleeve for 7-Inch to 10-Inch Netbooks (Black). Again, too bad it’s not real carbon fiber casing. :) Otherwise it would be virtually indestructible! The display is a matte backlit LED, with a native resolution of 1024×600. It’s crisp and bright, and mine had no dead pixels or any other issues. Very nice screen!

ERGONOMICS
As expected, this thing is small! Not overly small like the older 8″ netbooks, but small enough to stash away into a briefcase or attaché case for sure. It also doesn’t weigh much, which makes it highly portable. The keyboard is a 92% full size keyboard, and I’d say it’s perfect. I can type at nearly full speed without feeling cramped at all. The keyboard “gives” a bit under typing pressure (mostly in the upper left portion), which makes it feel a little cheap, but it’s nothing to be concerned about. All the keys themselves are pretty solid. The one thing I DO not like about this netbook is opening it. It’s very awkward to open the lid, because there’s just a very small lip to put your finger under and lift it up. There are no other decent spots to get a good grip to open the lid, unfortunately, and that’s one of the main reasons I only give this netbook four stars. The other thing that’s mildly annoying is it’s very back-heavy, due to the 6-cell battery, so the laptop tends to tilt backwards. Minor, but again, something that makes this a 4-star product rather than a perfect 5-star.

HARDWARE & SOFTWARE
This comes with Windows 7 Starter installed. Ignore any comments or product details that state it comes with WinXP - it doesn’t. Win7 Starter runs pretty well, just what you’d expect with a netbook: not super fast, but it’s not like you’re tapping your foot waiting for things to load, either. To be honest, I didn’t spend a lot of time in Windows before I reformatted and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. More on that below. The battery life in Win7 claims 9-11 hours, which is quite impressive. The wi-fi card works without a hitch, and all power-saving capabilities work quite well.

Now, onto some Ubuntu stuff…

This device isn’t quite Ubuntu-ready. Or maybe I should say, Ubuntu isn’t compliant with 1001P hardware just yet. With a fresh install of Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, several things do not work: wi-fi, multi-touch, built-in microphone, and brightness controls. The brightness controls do work, but they are unpredictable. With some searching around, though, you can find helpful resources to guide you in the right direction to getting these things working. If anyone has specific questions on Ubuntu, post a comment and I’ll do my best to reply.

One important note: if you decide to format this and put some other operating system on it, do NOT wipe out the 10GB and 17MB partitions! The 10GB partition contains the Windows 7 clone source which you can boot on and use to revert the netbook back to using Windows 7 as its operating system. So no matter how bad things get, you can always boot up that partition and reinstall Windows. If you’ve installed Ubuntu, there might be some extra leg-work to get that recovery partition to properly do its job (you may have to re-create those two extra partitions and make them FAT32 or something). I’m still fuzzy on going back to Windows after having Ubuntu installed.

I may give an update later after using it more. Feel free to post comments on this review.

Perfect Netbook5
Ordered this netbook because I was looking for an n450 powered device akin to the 1005 line.

Well let me say that I’m glad I didn’t spend the extra 60 bucks. This computer has everything the 1005 line has minus bluetooth (honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who uses bluetooth) battery life (11 vs 14 hours, real world 8 vs 11 hours), harddrive space (160GB versus 250GB which is a negligible difference), display (matte screen vs glossy screen equal resolution), wireless (g vs n) and finish (matte vs glossy).

Now, that seems like a lot of differences, but all of them, save battery life, are pointless bells and whistles that do nothing to affect the performance of the computer (akin to putting a moon roof and a spoiler on a car and jacking the price up).

Battery life is the only worthwhile difference between the two models (maybe worth 60-80 bucks depending on what your plans are). It would have been nice to have wireless n, but most users probably won’t notice a difference.

As far as the screen and finish go, I think matte is actually an advantage. A glossy screen is exhausting to read on in bright light. I’ll never understand what the recent obsession with glossy screens is; they are murderous to the eyes. As for a glossy finish, your netbook will look like a piece of well worn packing tape after 15 minutes (big greasy fingerprints everywhere!).

I’ve heard a lot of people complain that the keyboard of this model feels spongy, but I think they must be typing with mallets, because the 1001p keyboard feels like every other laptop I’ve ever used. It does not depress in the corners or anywhere for that matter and I’m a fairly hard typist.

The first thing I did when I got this computer was clean install windows 7 ultimate and office 2003 (office 2007 being an unholy abomination; a grievous injustice perpetrated upon all of mankind). So far the netbook has been breezing through applications on 1GB ram with nary a stutter. I would highly recommend upgrading from the absolute garbage windows 7 starter, it doesn’t even let you change the wallpaper and is solely intended to annoy you. Furthermore, you might as well get rid of all the asus software (it periodically generates pop-up ads asking if you want to pay for something) and just install the drivers for lan and wireless, you really don’t need the others.

In conclusion (ah, high school english where would I be without you) The 1001P is a solid, surprisingly powerful little netbook with excellent design. It is more than adequate for most computing tasks short of video editing. And for 280$? Are you kidding me? How can you complain?

Terrific little netbook5
This small light netbook exceeds my expectations. I did not imagine it would have such a user friendly keyboard; I use it for word processing of short items such as this review. This product is so easy to lift, manipulate and carry. Battery life seems to be as advertised. I thought pink would be distracting; it isn’t. This has quickly become my favorite computer. It’s my first ASUS, and it has sold me on the company. As always, kudos to Amazon for sensible packaging and speed of delivery.

Customer Reviews:

Great Power Inverter!5
The power inverter works great. I used it on a 5000 mile road trip powering a PS3 and iPhone and another cell phone along the way, in addition to other small electronics. To get the most power out of the unit, you need to hard wire it directly to the battery. I mounted it under the passenger seat and ran some 8 gauge wire. Very easy installation. I looked at several inverters before purchasing this one. The usb connection was what sold me on the unit. I now have an easy way to charge my iPhone without having to buy a car charger or taking up one of the regular power outlet slots. Well worth the money. The only thing to note for Amazon is that the product listing advertises that it comes with a carry case. It does not. No problem for me because I don’t really care, but it may matter to you. I believe the CPI 475 does include the case.

Does it’s job with no complaints.5
I has been on ever since I put it in my semi. I have a laptop, a printer, and four chargers for cordless devices hooked to it on a power strip. The fan will come on if I’m watching a movie on the laptop but that is the only time I have ever heard the fan come on. It is exposed to temps from below 0 to 80+ and hasn’t complained yet.

Cobra 400 Watt Power Inverter5
Had been using a Black & Decker 100 Watt power inverter for my laptop on the road. It is really slow and makes a LOT of NOISE. Researched 400 Watt power inverters and chose the Cobra! LOVE IT!! Makes almost no noise and has given great power for my laptop. No problems very happy with this choice.

Customer Reviews:

Works well but receiver is too big3
I had the original TrackMan Wheel mouse (with a cord) and loved it. I regretted letting my mother-in-law have it the very second I agreed to it.

I purchased this one as a replacement once I realised I didnt like a normal mouse any more. Plus I purchased a laptop and thought the cordless would be handy.

This model works excellent and is great for use at home with a desktop computer. Unfortunately, it doesnt mention in the description or photo that the receiver which plugs into the USB port is HUGE, its almsost as big as the mouse itself. The size of the receiver and length of cord that comes with it is the same as having a mouse, completely defeating most of the purpose of a cordless mouse. It is too bulky to carry around and setup on my laptop like I had hoped. The receiver is much larger than the ones that come on the other cordless mice I have seen.

If you like the TrackMan Wheel I highly recomend this one, it is top quality and functions flawlessly, as long as you dont want to rely on portability. If you plan on carrying it with your laptop, I would recomend a different cordless mouse.

Love the feel4
This cordless mouse simply feels great in my hand. I’ve owned about 10 different mouses and this one pleases me because it feels like part of my hand rather than part of the PC. I find that my thumb moves the trackball effortlessly while my index finger shifts almost without thought between the wheel and buttons. I seem to get consistent communication between the mouse and the receiver as I’ve not noticed any performance problems. Batteries last about a year and the mouse tells you when they are getting low by posting an alert.

Also, I share this mouse with my two children. It’s been dropped on a hardwood floor more than I probably know about. And it still works.

Excellent design and reliable service. I hope this review helps.

Under my thumb4
One of the most popular pastimes in Singapore - after shopping, of course - is sending SMS messages on a mobile phone. The kids here really have trained thumbs. It’s a good qualification for users of the Logitech TrackMan.

This gadget helped me clean up my desk - one cable less, mouse-pad out of the way. My two-year-old loves the red trackball although he misses yanking at the mouse cord. However, my PC co-user (and wife) cannot get used to the new toy. The shape of the Logitech TrackMan is too large for her hand, and she simply hates moving the cursor with the trackball. I have to plug in the traditional mouse for her whenever she wants to use the PC (the software supplied with the Logitech TrackMan handles this operation nicely, no big deal).

I’m quite happy with the Logitech TrackMan, but it has some weaknesses: (1) the sender unit has to be on the table for the mouse to receive the signals properly. It can not be placed too far away from the mouse; (2) for precision work the traditional mouse is superior to a trackball device - moving the cursor with a movement of the mouse-on-a-cord yields more precise results than using the thumb on the trackball, especially for click-and-drag operations; (3) speed - I move the cursor faster with the old mouse-on-a-cord.

Bottom-line: a product with good value for its price, very useful if you have only limited space on your desk - but you have to get used to it. One thumb up (the left one, the right one is on the trackball).

Amazon.com Product Description

This is a legitimate LG 1500 mAh battery for the LG voyager5
The poor picture, not so good description, and low price all had me worried that when this product arrived that it would be some knock off brand or not an extended battery at all. But it is the real deal.

I’m not sure how the company is selling these for a fraction of the retail price, but I’m not complaining. I’m getting about double the battery life out of this battery, than the factory one it replaced.

Also this battery is black so if you’re looking for a perfect match for your Voyager Titanium than your going to be disappointed.

Way better than stock battery.5
It’s been over a week and a half without charging and battery still shows full. Granted, I’ve not had to talk much on my phone and I’ve done only a few texts in this time but it’s still full. The stock battery didn’t last nearly that long without use. After a year, my stock battery was going dead after 4 text messages.

Unbelievable POWER!!!! lol5
I added this to my cart when it was only $4.00. I had never seen it before and never actually sought it out but I am SO glad I got it!!!

Yes, it is black - NOT “Titanium” …big deal!

Yes, it seems slightly bulky …big deal!

It has a smooth finish and fits perfectly into my Titanium Voyager phone. It adds a bit of weight to it, but I have big hands and I like that plus I like the fact that it’s a bit more to hold onto.

AND… the *BEST* part: I only charge my phone every four days or so now!!! I text a LOT and I talk on it when I have to but I do prefer texting. I absolutely LOVE this battery!

If you’re on the fence about this battery, just order it already - especially if it’s still only $4.00 (or less!).

Very cool, handy and sleek new toy — but don’t throw away your Flip yet!!4
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3GCL7CCLCHZCY When Steve Jobs announced the newest generation iPod nano, he suggested that with its new video capability the nano would easily compete with the Flip Video camcorder. While someday down the line this may be a serious contender in the pocket video camera market, it’s not there yet. I took some comparison footage with the iPod nano and the standard definition Flip Mino to show why. My point in all this is not to suggest that you go buy a Flip instead of an iPod nano, but that you ask yourself what it is you really want. If you want to make videos you can upload to Youtube and you want them to look pretty decent, and you don’t care much about music or you already have an mp3 player, I wouldn’t buy this iPod just because now it has video. On the other hand, having some video capability might be enough to give this the edge over most other music players; if games are more important to you than video, though, you’d be better off with an iPod touch.

One thing you’ll notice in the footage, where I shot the same things back to back with both camcorders, is that where the Flip really shines is in low light. I shot the hamster moments at night, in a room illuminated only by a lamp. Not only did the iPod nano take grainy video, it also didn’t do any kind of white balancing and the indoor lightbulb added an orange tint to the clip; I’m not sure exactly how the Flip is designed to address this (whether it automatically adjusts white balance or just has a better average setting), but the footage shows that it captured light correctly both outdoors and indoors. If you compare the hamster shots with the Flip and with the nano, I think it’s clear that for indoor and lowlight there’s no comparison and the Flip has the nano beat hands down. The outdoor images are closer, but I think even this small video shows greater detail in the Flip video. When you blow the images up bigger there’s no comparison — the Flip looks decent even on a big screen TV, the iPod nano footage looks like it was shot with, well, a toy camera. In all fairness, that’s all it is at this point. (Note, by the way, that, like the Flip, the nano will only take video and doesn’t take photos. You can manually add photos to the nano from your computer, but you can’t use the onboard camera to capture stills.)

Another thing that bugs me a bit about the new iPod nano is the bizarre placement of the camera lens. It’s nestled down in the corner of the backside below the screen — exactly where it is most natural to hold this thing if you are shooting with it. Even if you just grasp the thing at the corners, there’s a tendency for some part of a finger to accidentally edge into the camera frame. In fact, I found that even after I was aware of this fact I kept doing it anyways — the way this thing fits in my hands just makes it likely I’ll catch an edge of a finger in my shots unless I’m conscientious about avoiding it, and that detracts from the spontaneity this is designed to take advantage of. (I even noticed I’d done it on most of the iPod nano footage for this video comparison — and I thought about doing it over, but then decided to leave it in just to show how easily it can happen.)

So, to sum up: what you really get with the iPod nano is a toy camera, fun to have in the pocket and very cool to have just in case there’s something you want to shoot, but not quite the quality we’ve come to expect from the handy pocket camcorders like the Flip Mino and the Creative Vado and the Kodak Zi8, that keep getting better and better. Video is a nice new feature on the Nano, but not really a radical innovation and not a game changer.

What makes the iPod Nano worth it is that in addition to video on the fly, you get to listen to music, you get an FM radio that works quite well and even tells you what song you are listening to, you get a voice recorder (a VERY nice feature, excellent for students who can listen to music on their way to class and then record a lecture), a decent quality mini speaker, a somewhat useful pedometer, decent game options for killing time. You don’t get any of that with the Flip! Sure, the new iPod nano is a toy … but it’s a very cool toy.

Awesome!5
Let’s face it…we are not all clones and look for different features when it comes to an MP3 player. I wanted a small, portable player for the gym. The FM Radio feature is what I have been hoping for for a very long time! I don’t need apps. I don’t need to surf the web. I need to play my tunes. Genius is a great way to create a mix for the gym. The fitness tracker is incredible. And finally I can tune in to the TVs in the gym. Love it! This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. Perfect device for my needs.

Stay away. Far away.1
When I received my new iPod, I was impressed with the sound quality vs. the old 1st gen Nano I have. (The original iPods were very “middy” sounding.)

But that is about all that is good with the unit.

The new 5th generation is incompatible with everything I own. My car’s radio has iPod integration which worked with my original iPod and my friends 4th generation unit, however, the newest iPods are incompatible. My home receiver also has an iPod dock which doesn’t work with the new unit. You also cannot add music for playback under Linux (at the moment. It’s being worked on.) Apple changed how they store music on the iPod, in what can only be described, as attempt to keep 3rd party applications form working. (Let’s face it, iTunes has become a horrible, bloated and slow application.)

If all this wasn’t bad enough, the thing keeps locking up. When I’m listening to MP3s or the radio, it just automatically resets and the music library is erased. I then have to refill the unit with the songs from my PC. And after a few more minutes of listening, it resets again erasing everything. I have sent it back twice and I still have the problem. (A friend of mine bought a new Nano and he is also having the reset problem.)

Apple, why would you make a product that is incompatible with the expansive collection of accessories that people have invested in? Is anybody there monitoring quality of your products anymore?

LaCie 301304U5
I attached this 1-TB USB external drive to my 2.8 ghtz IMac. The setup was a snap, but the included utilities wanted to take the whole drive as a single partition. I used the Mac’s disk utilities, and created two partitions. This way, one partition can now be used for Time Machine (which by the way, will keep backing up until the disk is full, then begins deleting the oldest files), and another partition that is used to back up my Linux server.

The rest of the setup was fast. The Mac found the drive quickly, and so did Time Machine. The Time Machine software asked me which partition I wanted to use, and once that was decided on, Time Machine took off, and has been backing up ever since. How simple is that?

Also, most of the specs I read on this drive show a cache of 16 mb, but the drive as delivered, much to my pleasant surprise, has a cache of 32 mb. Even with the USB connection (I think firewire, which is available on some other La Cie drives, is about 15% faster), I found the file transfer time more than acceptable. I have run video from the drive with no issues. Also, I often transfer rather large photo files, and graphic images to and from the drive, and again no issues.

All that being said, for the money, the drive is hard to beat.

Beautiful & solid design5
This was purchased as external backup - it’s quiet and lovely. The blue LED reflects off the surface (desktop) so you know when it’s in use. Easy to use backup software included, but not robust enough for a power user or tech-geek (use cobian!).

The USB cable is kinda short, about 8″, so if you’re not planning on placing this directly next to or on the box you’re backing up plan to purchase or use a different USB cable.

Great Drive For a Reasonable Price4
I bought two of these (750GB) to replace a failing drive and to be more responsible about backups. I have some complaints, but overall I really like them.

Pros: great case, good size (a largish paperback; slightly narrower, lower and longer than my Mac Mini), on/off button, small adapter with a regular plug, no fan, relatively low light output from the front indicator.

Cons: louder than other fanless drives (compared to the Seagate eSATA 750), ambient light flickers with drive activity (I’d prefer a constant light).

Depends: only has USB.

In my opinion, online images make it look bigger than it is. Check the dimensions. The smooth black case lacks prominent logos. They can be stacked, but only two. I assume this is for heat dissipation reasons.

Why only 4 stars? Lacie’s advertising claims it is “near-silent”. Close, but not quite.

UPDATE:

1 of these drives has failed as of 4/2009. Neither has ever been used for anything but a backup drive, so it’s not as though it failed from overuse. I’m somewhat disappointed. I doubt I’ll buy Lacie again.

Customer Reviews:

Would be perfect if they improved the speakers3
PROS
- Great mounting options
- Picture quality
- Visible in high glare location

CONS
- Awful speakers (everything sounds tiny)

Great TV that I bought as a gift. Everything about it is perfect for a kitchen TV, with the exception of the awful sound the thing puts out. Luckily it has an audio-out jack, but frankly I shouldn’t have to come up with workarounds for a TV at this price range.

decent for an auxiliary tv3
I got this tv to replace an aging 5 inch B&W SD TV in our bathroom. We use this TV for watching traffic and weather as we’re getting ready for work. Beyond that, I wouldn’t recommend this TV. This unit does have a good tuner, nice remote, and the ability to position the screen is great. The downsides include are a poor picture (bright enough, but a lot of pixelation of colors) and abysmal sound (the sound is tinny/harsh and has a constant hum in the background)

Don’t mount under cabinet2
I’m going to be sending this TV back after trying it mounted under a cabinet. The viewing angle is great when it is upright, but upside down the viewing angle is horrible. You have to be positioned directly on center with the TV to see it if you are more than a few inches above the screen. The sound is also poor.

Customer Reviews:

Just remember what you’re buying3
I purchased 4 of the RC80i for surround sound in my living room, lefts and rights for both front and back speakers. My rationale in purchasing in-ceiling speakers was the desire not to have a room filled with visible speakers. The mounting was very easy. Just cut the holes via the template and slide them in. The grilles fit snug and I’m sure will be a challenge if I ever have to remove them. The directional tweeter design is great and a must with in-ceiling speakers. Unfortunately, I was hoping for a little better fidelity. The speakers lack the high frequencies. They’re good when listening to movies but you can hear the difference when listening to music. I set my expectations too high and have to remind myself of the price.

Fantastic speakers5
These speakers are great. Installation was much easier because the large, 8″ opening you cut into the wall/ceiling makes it much easier to fish speaker wire. The mounting brackets securely fasten to the wall so there is no shaking or rattling. The tweeter can easily pivot to aim at your listening position. These are voice matched to the Polk “Monitor” series speakers, so match with any other RC series in-wall speaker, CS1 or CS2 center channel speaker, and PSW10 or PSW12 subwoofer.

My only 2 complaints, which were not enough to drop the rating, are:
1) The speaker cutout template turned out to be a tad small, and I had to go around with a keyhole saw again to make it 1/8″ larger to fit the speaker all the way. That made it a little messier, but it ended up fine.
2) The speaker grill is pretty hard to remove, but you only have to do that once, and you want it to fit snugly anyways.

Fantastic speakers; easy installation5
I installed a pair of these in the kitchen, after which my wife and I both had one of those mouth-open, “wow” experiences. They flood the room with deep, rich sound: crips highs and full, round lows. You can angle the tweeters to “aim” them better, but I didn’t want one particular sweet spot in the kitchen, so I left them pointing directly downwards. Awesome.

The installation is quite easy as well. I found that with a carefully cut hole I had no problems at all with speaker insertion. As with the other reviews, I had a devil of a time getting the speaker grilles off, and was afraid I might pull out one of the tiny holes with the paperclip. Polk would do better to package these with the grilles off so that the installer can skip that step. However, I found that putting them back on was easy - you just have to make sure you put them back on with an even insertion on all edges and then work your way around little by little…you can’t fully insert them on one end and make the rest fit, they are that tight.

Bottom line: I love these and highly recommend them.

From the Manufacturer
The Polk Audio RC80i 2-way In-ceiling Speaker delivers incredible stereo sound to any room in your home from speakers you can barely see, without using any floor or shelf space. The RC80i is easy to install, requiring only that you cut a hole, feed the wires through, and simply drop the speaker in where it is held in place by rotating cams that safely secure the speaker with no extra assembly or mess. Once installed, the paintable grille and flange allows this in-ceiling speaker to virtually disappear in the room.

The Polk RC80i utilizes a eight-inch dynamic-balance, mineral filled polymer-composite cone with a rubber surround that outlasts cheaper foam surrounds, as well as a one-inch ring-radiator tweeter with a 15-degree swivel mount. The swivel-mounted tweeter is aimable for direct high frequency control that ensures spacious imaging with amazing clarity, and well-balanced sound in any listening position, even off-axis listening positions, rather than in just a small sweet spot. Constructed of rust resistant hardware and durable, moisture resistant materials, the RC80i is safe for use in bathrooms, kitchens, saunas, or even under outdoor eaves, and a glass-filled composite baffle that provides a dense, acoustically inert platform for the speaker’s high end components. This unit features strong composite driver baskets that keep moving parts in rigid alignment, a wide-dispersion design for even sound-coverage throughout even large rooms, and a wall-distance toggle switch that flattens frequency response when installation requires placement near a corner or adjacent wall. The RC80i also features a tweeter-level switch that lets you tailor the highs for your room acoustics, and is timbre-matched to the Polk Audio Monitor Series for seamless, enveloping imaging when used in a home theater system.

What’s in the Box
RC80i speakers (pair), 2 grilles, 2 cardboard templates with paint masks, owner’s manual, and registration card.
