Christopher Lambert, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.

Blanca Marsillach was delicious as Carmen de Jaramillo; let’s study more of her…

Very well written and very well presented, the movie is one that can be watched over and over again.

The setting, the location, the costumes, and the music are all incredible, though the battle sequences could have been better.

First of all, “Around the World in 80 Days” is one of the best of the 1950-1960’s huge epics. It may not have the character depth of Giant or the scale of The Ten Commandments, but it’s calm one heck of a fun movie.

Mike Todd spot out to manufacture 3 hours of crowd-pleasing entertainment and he reached his goal, ten-fold (literally… the $6,000,000 film earned over 4 times its cost at the box office) . The cast is improbable (it’s definately Cantinflas’ demonstrate, though) and the Oscar winning cinematography is breathtaking. Also, one of the best musical scores (also an Oscar winner) and a witty screenplay (Oscar winner) earn it a true joy to gaze.

Sadly, for the last 18 years, the only version on home video has been a pan & scan one. “80 Days” was shot in the Todd-AO 70mm format, so the crisp, ultra-detailed, and wide image is totally mangled in that format. It doesn’t relieve that the P&S tape also weak a mono track rather than the chubby stereophonic surround sound that Todd-AO (and even many general release 35mm prints) offered.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Around the World in 80 Days! Click Here

Warner Home Video’s DVD of the film is nothing short of a triumph. The film’s modern negative has been in bad condition since the 1950’s (not Warner’s fault, mind you), thus making a watchable print is more or less impossible. Thankfully, Warner has remastered “80 Days” from scratch. The result is a aesthetic 2.20:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, with the Todd-AO mix adapted to Dolby Digital 5.1 (448 kbs, too!) While the image occasionally has gooey splices and some specks on the image, the film has a level of crispness and color vibrancy that rivals 1940’s Technicolor films. The 5.1 track is astonishing and keeps a lot of the directional sound of 6-track magnetic sound from 70mm presentation.

What is really improbable is that Warner managed to invent one of the most perfect digital transfers of a film, ever. Not one hint of edge enhancement pops up, no pixelation, no macroblocking. While the film source isn’t perfect, Warner didn’t add any sort of imperfections when adapting the 65mm film to NTSC video. The switch to 448 kbs (Warner usually uses a lower bitrate for 5.1 audio) gives the audio a sure warmth that is in line with the ultra-high fidelity of 6-track mag sound.

The extras are colossal, too. The Robert Osborne intros, outtakes, Brian Sibley commentary, recent “Chase to the Moon” short, and roadshow program book (on DVD-ROM) makes this an satisfactory presentation of a Best Relate Oscar winner.

Whether you’re collecting the Best Record winners, a fan of the classic 1950’s epics, or unbiased looking for a fun movie to peep, Around the World in 80 Days is worth a prefer. “80 Days” hasn’t lost its luster due to age, it’s because of awful presentation. Now that Warner Bros. has released the film in widescreen, people can now survey what is one of the most underrated and neglected films.

This Todd-AO wide-wide-wide cover production earned many accolades when it was released and, although it may be a bit tame by today’s standards, it should be placed on a DVD in its novel WIDESCREEN Todd-AO format to come by the chubby accomplish of its scenic and humorous wonders. David Niven, a very young and graceful Shirley MacLaine, Robert Newton and Cantinflas head a Gargantuan cast of movie stars playing all sorts of cameo surprise roles throughout, many of whom will probably not be recognized by today’s generation but who should be remembered nevertheless. The vast Victor Young secure is lovely and Broad names present up all through this movie: Buster Keaton, Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra, Cesar Romero, and over 40 other stars light up this adventure, which really works best in its widescreen presentation. Why this mammoth family film has not been given the DVD treatment is a mystery to me. Let’s hope this error in judgment will be corrected soon and a pristine widescreen DVD will be forthcoming of this truly exquisite movie.

Whether it be Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do or Jiu-Jitsu; ALL forms of Martial Arts is a method of Self Expression. The incredible Japanese Martial Arts melodrama, “Gloomy BELT” (aka. Kuro Obi, 2007) explores the character of Karate itself and is loosely based on a lawful chronicle. The film effectively balances the YIN and the YANG using the tumultuous military period in a 1930s Japan as its backdrop. It delves into the face of violent confrontation and the reflection on accurate responsibility.

At an isolated dojo headed by Sensei Eiken Shibahara (Shinya Ohwada), three students: Giryu (Akihito Yagi), Taikan (Tatsuya Naka) and Choie (Yuji Suzuki) scream relentlessly under their master’s instructions. One day, when the Kenpeitai (Japanese military) threaten to ousts them from their contain school, the encounter leaves Choie badly wounded with Taikan and Giryu taking up the challenge. Giryu defeats the commanding officer without throwing a single punch that led the officer to commit Seppuku.

After their master’s death, the trio was hired to scream military soldiers since the two both displayed impressive prowess. But fate interferes when Giryu becomes wounded by the officer’s vengeful children and he becomes separated from the group. Taikan becomes influenced by the ways of the world while Giryu befriends a satisfactory family. Fate has played them in opposing hands and an inevitable showdown is poised to bring the ragged Giryu against the corrupted Taikan–just who is truly deserving of the KURO OBI?

“Gloomy Belt” is a thinking man’s martial arts film. The screenplay by George Ilda is a lush impressive breeding ground for melodrama and with Shinichi Nagasaki’s (A Tender Residence) direction taking a more somber, novelistic arrive to its story; the film explores the tensions of Karate. The film is an expression of the spirit of Karate, and Director Nagasaki has opted for a more character-driven arrive in space of radiant and unrealistic martial arts displays, for which he is to be commended. I am in total terror when a director instead goes for the spirit of a plan rather than honest indicate how wintry fight sequences can observe.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Black Belt! Click Here

The cast, Tatsuya Naka and Akihito Yagi are Dismal Belt holders themselves and they peer very natural. Now, don’t mistake my earlier comment that the film is lacking in the number of fight sequences; there are quite a spacious number of fight scenes that demonstrate the beauty of Karate. Although the film focuses more on its characters and while the film’s position is a bit simple, the action and fights are nicely placed to maintain us entertained. The fight sequences themselves are a originate of character development. As I’ve said, martial arts is a produce of self-expression and so the film capitalizes on this understanding. The action is there to manufacture the characters` credibility, and it feels notable to come by to the film’s resolution. Unlike most martial arts films that have the tale revolving on the action scenes, in this film, the action revolves in its region.

The fight sequences by Fuyuhiko Nishi are tranquil and VERY realistic. Most martial arts fans always watch the choreography of the fights as a film’s major selling point, and this film delivers; the fights are AWESOME to notice and more impressive as it avoided the exhaust of wires and extravagant stunt work. I have never witnessed such well-choreographed fights since I saw loyal live competition. The camera work stays at a distance so you can view the movement between the fighters. The fights are hard-hitting and looks quite loyal, they aren`t overly long and excellently paced. These characters are supposed to be lethal weapons but no one said they were emotionless. The fighters in this film feel very human, you peer their concentration in their eyes and they can feel distress. The magic is that they manage to overcome the harm.

From the film’s opening act, you sight the depths of Giryu, Taikan and Choei’s soul. Taikan is a young man who revels in competition and violent encounter to glean the art’s meaning. Choei is the weakest student, but he is aloof and truthful to himself which is why he was chosen to hold their master’s successor after his death. Giryu is very weak, Shibahara’s teachings are similar to a religion to him and he would rather die than to stray from his teachings. “Karate is not to throw a punch or a kick, never attack, instead defend against an opponent’s attack–parry and stave off the opponent. This scheme you can arrive perfection” as quoted by Sensei Shibahara.

While the film is quite predictable, the direction is very solid and the script is gripping. I called this film a Martial Arts melodrama because it focuses on its characters but let me once again execute it sure that action fans won’t be disappointed. The absence of CGI and wirework in its fights are the film’s biggest strength and simplicity is its expression. The final encounter is shot in dark and white perhaps to emphasize the clash between the Yin and the Yang, or to remind us that Karate is an old-fashioned art that existed for hundreds of years.

“KURO OBI” is a radiant film, it is definitely a thinking man’s film. The film status out to narrate the soul of Karate and director Nagasaki has achieved what he wanted to do by carefully measuring his arrive. The film’s simple status may be its Achilles’ heel but as with Karate, simplicity is often the most effective near. After all, throwing too many punches can afflict a fighter himself, as can pitching too many ideas can damage a film. “Unlit Belt” is solid, and nicely executed.

What is really worth fighting for? The goal is not for competition but the battle for enlightenment. Shaded can never inspect dirty, and a fighter must be pure. The Belt represents willpower.

“From Strength will reach compassion, from compassion, strength will emerge”

Highly Recommended!! [4 ½ Stars]

As a student of stale JKA Shotokan karate for many years and an avid martial arts movie fan I have to say that I was scared by this movie - in all my years this is the first time that I have seen a movie about faded karate. I was overwhelmed by the characters depiction of conventional karate and when I did my research on the two principle characters and found out that they are 6th degree (JKA) and 5th degree (Goju) karate masters I was VERY impressed.

I will not try and give a review of the film (that has already been done) - I will fair say if you are a faded karate student - sight this movie - if not search for it anyway.

Note: When Sensei Naka performs the kata’s Nijushiho and Meikyo I felt a sense of pride in shimmering that the general public was finally getting a chance to view real former style karate (no offense to the Goju kata (smile) ) .

Purchase this movie - maybe more will be made.

This is the first time I have purchased a condensed version of a telenovela and after having seen the new on TV, I must say that I was a limited disappointed with this 12 hour version. First of all, the unique opening music from David Brisbal, Esta Ausenica, is not there and has been replaced with something else. The opening music is extremely significant in watching telenovelas - almost as well-known as the myth itself. I felt the scenes were choppy and rushed together. I admit, there may not be enough time to search for an entire telenovela on DVD, but they could have made it a runt longer and included the fresh music to at least TRY and keep the flavor and enjoyment of watching the TV version. This is not the case here.

This is the second attempt to fabricate a movie out of a Terry Pratchett original and it succeeds rather well. In this case, the movie is based on the first two novels in the ‘Discworld’ series, ‘The Colour of Magic’ and ‘The Light Fantastic’.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Color of Magic! Click Here

Rincewind (David Jason), an inept wizard, is expelled from Unseen University. On a dare, he snuck a gawk at the Octavo, the book outmoded to perform the world, and one of the eight mammoth spells lodged in his head.

At the same time, Twoflower (Sean Astin) arrives in Ankh-Morpork to “gaze at it”. He’s the Discworld’s first tourist and he travels with the Luggage, a box made of sapient pearwood that moves about on hundreds of limited legs and will follow it’s owner everywhere.

After conning Twoflower, Rincewind is dragged to the Patrician’s palace and ordered by Lord Vetinari (Jeremy Irons) to guide Twoflower safely through the city.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Color of Magic! Click Here

Twoflower, introducing the notion of fire insurance to Ankh-Morpork, inadvertently causes the entire city to burn down and he and Rincewind dash and Rincewind is plunged into several life threatening situations which he survives by sheer luck.

The edifying parts of this movie are Jeremy Irons as the Patrician and Tim Curry as Ymper Trymon, second in direct of one of the eight orders of wizardry at the university. Both play their roles with be pleased and Curry’s performance is as obedient, if not better, than that of Cardinal Richelieu in ‘The 3 Musketeers’.

The dreadful parts? Well, a lot of the pleasant scenes in both novels are left out. There is no travelling shop, no Hrun the Barbarian, no flying rock and no Tethis the sea troll. There is also no gingerbread cottage or broomstick flying.

Also, they unfortunately chose a white actor to narrate Twoflower, when it’s made sure in both ‘The Colour of Magic’ and ‘Interesting Times’ that Twoflower is Chinese. A precise shame, but Sean Astin does a astounding job at portraying Twoflower’s attitude of looking at the world through rose coloured glasses.

And they got Cohen the Barbarian’s (David Bradley) teeth substandard.

Although this movie takes a while to win going, it does pick up funnier as it goes along and there are some broad one-liners. “I am having a reach Rincewind experience.”

Christopher Lee reprises the affirm of Death, as he did in the bewitching versions of ‘Soul Music’ and ‘Wyrd Sisters’ and he has some of the best parts in the movie.

Aside from the exiguous annoyances, the movie is quite reliable, the actors are top-notch, it’s got all the wittiness you’d examine from Pratchett, and I loved it.

A live-action Terry Pratchett movie is either doomed to fail in every plan, or succeed in practically everything.

And “The Colour of Magic,” adapted from the first two novels in Pratchett’s quick-witted Discworld series, is more the customary than the latter. This one is no “Hogather” — it has rather behind direction at times — but it preserves Pratchett’s wry satirical sense of humour. And of course, it’s all about a mercenary, cowardly failed wizard.

Rincewind (David Jason) is ejected from the Unseen University, on the very day that Twoflower (Sean Astin) arrives with his many-legged Luggage. He’s approach to the Disc… to “glance at it.” But after Rincewind tries to con Twoflower, the Patrician (Jeremy Irons) orders Rincewind to be the guide/bodyguard of the Disc’s first ever tourist.

After a massive fire sweeps through the city, the two kill up fleeing Ankh-Morpork and running into all sorts of strange things — a very assertive magic sword, a floating island tubby of see-through dragons, a dramatic dragonlady in a leather bikini, astrozoologists trying to settle Stout A’Tuin’s gender, the worn Cohen the (retired) Barbarian, druids, and even getting thrown distinct off the Disc in a outlandish spacecraft. And you belief YOU had problems.

Unfortunately the Unseen University is having troubles of its possess — the magical book Octavo is acting strange, and power-hungry Trymon (Tim Curry) is scheming against the Archchancellor. Even worse, a unfamiliar red star has appeared in the sky, and the world is facing destruction. The only thing that can set aside it is the spell in Rincewind’s head.

Perhaps it’s because it’s based on the first, roughest Discworld books, but “Colour of Magic” is not quite as comical or tightly-written as its predecessor, “Hogather.” The writing is not quite as complex or as witty, and the direction sometimes feels a bit behind (such as the bar fight scene, or Trymon skulking and schemind around the University) .

But despite these drawbacks, “Colour of Magic” is mild a vastly gripping legend — it has a solid plotline and it chugs away nicely after a somewhat inactive beginning, and blossoms into full-out complexity about halfway through. Once it gets underway it starts to resemble a road-trip through fantasy-land, with our quirky tourist and wizard bungling their diagram across the Disc.

Along the arrangement there’s some fun action (an upside-down duel), silly dialogue (”You weren’t born with a mysterious birthmark in the shape of a crown, were you? “), and a general air of tongue-in-cheekness. Best of all, it’s a fantasy spoof — Vadim Jean preserves Pratchett’s clever satire aimed at the staples of your average fantasy: fantasy babes, prophecies, magic swords, retired barbarians, noteworthy artifacts, and even the conception of reality warping itself to set aside the “hero.”

Jason is wonderfully snivelly and sour as Rincewind, a failed wizard who basically finds himself repeatedly swept up into bizarre, deadly circumstances even though he didn’t want to be enthusiastic. Astin is even better as the hilariously oblivious Twoflower, who regards every peril as yet another spacious adventure (”We’re going to hasten out of world!” “I have to seek that!”) .

And there’s a talented supporting cast — Curry chews the scenery with sneering aplomb, Karen David plays a humorously over-the-top dragon-lady, and Irons has a little but unbelievable role as the frosty, efficient Vetinari. And of course, the bright Christopher Lee takes over as an increasingly disappointed Death.

“Colour of Magic” isn’t as tightly directed as it could have been, but it serene manages to be clever and quite silly.

This is the ONLY single disc release that is not being included on the Complete Season box sets being released by the same company. All of the 2-hour specials, etc. being released individually are also included on the box sets, but this pilot episode is not. So, if you are a Shrimp House completist, retract this disc to add to your box status collection.

I grew up watching the repeats of “Cramped House On The Prairie” on TBS however I have never seen the pilot movie. I don’t consider it was establish into syndication? “Microscopic House On The Prairie” premiered years before I was born, suffice it to say it has been one of my celebrated television shows because it is a rare combination of both entertainment and family values. In fact, I cannot believe of any television exhibit that is as beloved as this astounding series.

The pilot movie introduces the Ingalls family for the first time. The characters aren’t as polished or well-rounded as they are in the TV series. The pilot also introduces their longtime family friend Mr. Edwards.

It starts out by telling the yarn of why they left their fresh home (and relatives) . Charles finds a nice fragment of land and sets up his region for his family. It is at this time that they meet Edwards who helped in the construction of their recent home.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Little House on the Prairie - The Pilot! Click Here

Also included in this movie is a very touching Christmas scene (that was repeated in subsequent “flashback” “Puny House” episodes) where the Ingallses celebrate their first Christmas in their novel home. Mr. Edwards even plays Santa by surprising the entire family with his cheer and gifts.

Keep in mind that this is not site in the town of Walnut Grove (where the TV series took area) . In the pilot movie they lived in a different station which was even more remote with no town and no neighbors to jabber of (except the Native Americans who abet the Ingallses) .

Tragedy strikes when their log house catches on fire. I conception it would all be burned down, however they were blessed with a splendid rainstorm which saved their home and barn.

But their happiness is short-lived when the government tells Charles that they have to vacate. The land is not for them; so they pack up their belongings and say good-bye to Mr. Edwards and go on their diagram to win a original home.

The movie ends with the Ingalls family riding away. This somewhat loosely explains how they came to their recent town (Walnut Grove) in the TV series.

Unfortunately, television these days doesn’t even approach cessation to the high standards that Michael Landon status forth on “Small House On The Prairie.” This is a improbable pilot and a fabulous TV series!

The third installment of the Harry Potter films was ready for a original director, and Alfonso Cuaron seemed a likely choice. Chris Columbus was admirable in his fidelity to the region of the first two books, but as Harry becomes a teenager and faces a more complex life, Columbus’s candy-coated style is no longer appropriate. So it was with immense anticipation that I looked forward to the “darker” style that Cuaron promised.

In some respects I was not disappointed. Cuaron’s interpretation of Harry’s world is defined by inscrutable shadows and colored in misty greens and greys, rather than red-and-gold tapestry of movies one and two. This fresh palette is more natural, and in keeping with that, far more of the movie takes location out of doors. Cuaron gives Hogwarts a greater sense of age as well, making a crumbling courtyard and rickety bridge over a gorge central to many scenes. These locations, as well as the ample pendulum in the entry hall and clock face that Harry sits inside at one point, are a nicely subtle arrangement to weave in the movie’s (and book’s) theme of time and how the past can’t ever be completely undone.

Cuaron handles some scenes very well, especially brief, telling gestures or moments that provide character definition, such as the bit where Hermione grabs Ron’s hand which made it into the trailer, and another where the two of them have an awkward conversation outside the Shrieking Shack. Other highlights include Harry and his dorm-mates up gradual eating candy that makes them impersonate animals (touchingly shows how very teenage they are) ; and a moment when Sirius, trying desperately to occupy Lupin support from his change to werewolf, places his hand over Lupin’s chest and says “You live in this heart!” - which is made all the more poignant because we know he can’t end the transformation.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! Click Here

Some status points have been sacrificed in order to maintain the film to a manageable length. Most of the time this works, as when Harry meets with Snape and Lupin in a beautifully lit nighttime corridor, precipitating the handover of the Marauder’s Draw and Lupin’s realization that Peter Pettigrew lives; or when Harry receives the Firebolt from Sirius at a different point in the movie than in the book. There were, however, two changes which seemed inexplicable to me. First, the patronus charm is made into a shield of light rather than an animal which charges down the dementors. This eliminates Harry’s discovery of his father within himself through his stag patronus (he does witness a stag of light when he rescues himself at the lakeside, but when we explore him from the perspective of rescuer there is no stag, and this is never explained) . Similarly, even though Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are named on the Marauder’s Way, the nicknames and their relationship to Lupin, Pettigrew, Sirius, and James Potter is never explained. It would have taken only a few more minutes to add that explosition, which would have strengthened Harry’s cinematic connections to his father tremendously.

All in all, I deem it’s possible that the viewers who delight in this film the most will be those who haven’t read the book. As someone who is very familiar with the Harry Potter book series, I kept finding myself hung up on the changes to the narrative (and unbiased how grand depth was lost) even as I enjoyed the magnificent cinemetography and deft handling of characters’ relationships. My hope is that whoever directs film four is able to rob some of Cuaron’s artistic sensibilities and combine them with Columbus’s sense of wonder and attention to location detail. That would truly do Harry justice.

I loved this particular movie when compared to the series as a whole, but this is not why i’m writing this review.

This review concerns the “bonus” say for people who pre-order the dvd here on amazon. The “screensaver” is not an gripping screensaver of the marauders scheme as you might judge, which actually would have been quite nice if it had been done in the style of the intention in the movie. You will be instructed to download a seperate application which will steal over your windows screensaver functionality. The application is not very intuitive to employ and I’ve since deactivated it. The “Marauders Diagram Screensaver” itself is nothing more then 3 random images of indistinct parts of the in-movie Marauder’s Arrangement with giant “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” logos that splashed everywhere. Its not very visually lively as a screensaver and the images in concept aren’t very well done.

Just want to obtain certain that other people are aware of what exactly this bonus dispute is, and aren’t buying the dvd here purely because of this. There is no marauders arrangement style animation occuring here, and all that will be displayed are static images. I pre-ordered it here purely based on getting this bonus impart, and I was rather disapointed with what i received.

This film starts with Andy Hardy returning home after serving in the army. And it’s not too long before he’s caught up in the usual Hardy capers. Mickey Rooney was a dab hand at portraying Andy Hardy by now though at 26, perhaps a diminutive on the worn side for this role. That aside, this is a radiant addition to the Hardy series with Lewis Stone, Fay Holden and Sara Haden reprising their parts in what would be the penultimate film of the series. Worth your time and check out that scene at the dance with Dorothy Ford….

This movie is absolutely hilarious!!!! Mickey Rooney is fair awesome in this movie and he is in all of the Andy Hardy pictures. The dance with his Grand taller date is honest hilarious. So many comical things happen to Andy in this movie you will obtain yourself laughing a lot. ANdy is also thinking of asking a girl to marry him in this movie, but he is sorely damage….you will have to gawk to fetch out what happens. I would highly recommend this film for anyone, especially fans of the huge Mickey Rooney.

I’m not a titanic war-movie buff any more (THE SEARCH FOR PRIVATE RYAN cured me) but this is a worthwhile film if you have an interest in WWII. TORA! TORA! TORA! is a documentary-type film. Assume of it as a Stephen Ambrose book recorded live. The film is neither a glorified fifties war-film (IN HARMS Device, BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA), nor is it a Viet Nam noir-war film (PLATOON, THE DEER HUNTER) . (Neither of which are particularly authentic.)

TORA! TORA! TORA! recreates war from the perspective of news correspondent-participant-observer. The myth is presented from both the Japanese and American viewpoints and it is presented like a History Channel film.

It took the film crew several months to film TORA! TORA! TORA! I was living in Navy housing on Pearl Harbor at the time and a number of our friends and acquaintences found part-time jobs acting in the film. “Valid” military pilots in-between rounds in Viet Nam flew some of the planes (this was 1969) .

Much of the architecture in Honolulu was vintage WWII era or earlier and the rest of the island was relatively unchanged from the 1940s. The terrain looked very grand as it had when my father-in-law passed through on his scheme to Guadalcanel and later Iwo Jima.

I cannot protest you the names of the aircraft (my husband could) but I was told that they frail precise aircraft from the period including the P40s the U.S. flew and the captured Zeros the Japanese flew. We drove up to Schoffield Barracks to stare at the ancient airplanes lined up row on row. During the filming, one of these traditional planes crashed in a sugar cane field and burned up before the pilot could be rescued. The daily flights overhead, the steady crashes, the reenactment of the destruction in the harbor, the daily flights in and out of Hickam as men and material destined for Viet Nam left and wounded and dull arrived–was all very outlandish.

Well, this is an pleasurable film. The unusual PEARL HARBOR relies on all sorts of technology, but if you want to leer how Hawaii really looked in 1941 and how the planes really looked, and how the crews really looked, and salvage some sense of how hideous it was to be in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 this is the film to inspect.

I first saw Tora! Tora! Tora! (Tiger! Tiger! Tiger! in Japanese) in 1974, when I was 20 years dilapidated on Atlanta’s Channel Two. As exclusive as this may sound, I have always liked movies about World War II. My stepfather had served in the Navy during the war and in fact he had joined the service shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which is the subject of this 2 hour and 25 minute-long Japanese-American 1970 production.

This movie was directed by several directors including Toshio Masuda and Kinji Fukasuka, but the American version (yes, there is a Japanese version) gives the credit to customary director Richard Fleischer. Based on Gordon W. Prange’s “Tora! Tora! Tora!” and Ladislas Farago’s “The Broken Seal”, the film accurately depicts the events on both sides of the Pacific leading up to the attractive attack on the U.S. Pacific Quickly on Sunday, December 7, 1941.

Even though it covers an 18-month period between Admiral Yamamoto’s (Soh Yamamura) initial planning for Operation Hawaii and the attack itself, Tora! Tora! Tora! (the title refers to the code traditional to order the Japanese that the Americans had been caught by surprise) never drags or seems dreary. I learned, for instance, that Japanese Ambassador Nomura was a skilled and apt diplomat who did not know what his country’s military leaders were planning, and that he hoped to avoid war. I was also insecure by how General Walter C. Short (Jason Robards) was so preoccupied by the threat of sabotage from Hawaii’s 125,000 Japanese inhabitants that he foolishly parked all the bombers and fighters in Hickam and Wheeler Fields in well-organized rows, supposedly to fabricate them easier to guard but actually making them sitting ducks.

What amazed me about watching this movie is how clueless Pearl Harbor’s defenders were on that Sunday morning. Though many people judge the first shot of the Pacific War was fired by the Japanese, it was actually fired by the USS Ward on a Japanese midget submarine trying to sneak into the harbor. This happened roughly an hour before the first bomb fell on Battleship Row. I would have conception that the relate of an unknown submarine being fired upon in a restricted dwelling would have alerted the whole speedy. Immoral! American officers in Oahu were so determined that the Japanese would be spotted long before they could inaugurate a strike that Captain James Earle (Richard Anderson) asks for confirmation before he tells his superiors. This does not accomplish Adm. Husband E. Kimmel (Martin Balsam) very gay and I plan he was very indignant that the Ward’s initial record did not approach him in time.

The movie makes sure to the audience that history often hinges on puny but indispensable details. Who would have conception that the fate of two big nations would be decided by a diplomat’s dumb typing bustle, or that a describe of a big radar blip off to the north of Oahu would be received with the phrase, “Well, don’t pain about it.”? It sounds like unpleasant fiction but everything in this movie is based on historical fact.

Tora! Tora! Tora! has improbable battle scenes. Most of the aerial scenes were shot using either vintage planes or realistic replicas (because there are no flying Zero fighters, T-28 Texans were modified to inspect like the famed Japanese planes) . The Navy actually allowed 20th Century-Fox to film in and around Pearl Harbor and rented a World War II era carrier that was to be decommissioned to benefit as a stand in for the Japanese carrier. Clever editing, well-behaved exiguous effects and carefully built live action sets give the illusion that one is actually reliving the Day of Infamy.
