The Apostles’ Creed, sometimes titled Symbol of the Apostles, is an early statement of Christian belief, a creed or “symbol”. It is widely used by a number of Christian denominations for both liturgical and catechetical purposes.

(The word “catholic” refers not to the Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.)
Apostles’ Creed has received this title because of its great antiquity. It dates from very early times in the Church, a half century or so from the last writings of the New Testament.
While we may say the Apostle’s Creed regularly in church or as a personal prayer, there are many questions about it that you may or may not have contemplated. Where did the Creed come from? Why do Christians have a Creed? How is the Creed relevant to Christians today? The scholars and theologians discuss each segment of the Creed, its meaning, and its context, both historical and Biblical. The scholars and theologians featured in this documentary have thought about and answered, through Scripture and historical context, many of these questions.
But this Apostles’ Creed DVD is not the velvet ecumenism that plays down doctrine. It is the diamond-hard ecumenism that brilliantly celebrates the central truths of the faith and explains them all by referencing their biblical foundations. This is the Christian tradition the way evangelicals love it: stated clearly and explained in explicitly biblical terms. Beginning with the simple statement, “I believe…” (What does it mean to believe and why would it be necessary to declare belief in this particular way?), The Apostles’ Creed addresses each segment of the Creed completely and thoroughly, using multi-layer interviews with at least 10 of today’s top Christian theologians from around the World. The list includes Alastair McGrath, Bishop N.T.Wright, Dr. Mulholland, Dr. George, Dr. Tidball, Dr. Lane, Bishop Ware and others.
The Apostles’ Creed is an excellent DVD to introduce the basic tenets of the Christian faith to you, your family and your Church in an effective way. After having watched the abridged version, you could not help but eagerly await to participate in the soon-to-be-released 12-hour curriculum series.
This century will prove to be the century of heresy, at least here in the good old USA, and as they say, when America sneezes, the whole world gets a cold.
Thus this series. The battle over orthodoxy has already been lost in some churches, and there is erosion happening everywhere. It is very possible that eventually we will be divided into two camps; those who might call themselves creedal Christians, and everyone else. So these scholars take us through the Apostles Creed phrase by phrase and illuminate it all for us. The highlights, for me, are sections featuring Kallistos Ware, N. T. Wright and Robert Mulholland, though everyone interviewed brings something to the table.
Everyone who calls himself a believer should know something about the Creeds, and this series makes such a study very accessible. We must not forget that it took the church over 400 years to formulate an agreed upon central expression of doctrine and definitive statement on the nature of Jesus. We ignore these historical events to our peril. This presentation gives us a handle on the core of our beliefs, and is definitely worth viewing.
