This volume as a whole is somewhat weaker than the sixth, but there are still great moments to see. Not much happens in the first episode. Shinn carries on with his duties while concerned about Stella’s worsening condition. Lunamaria is ordered to forget about everythng she learned while spying on Athrun’s meeting with Kira. Then the Earth Forces and Orb prepare to attack the Minerva again. This episode was basically preparing, launching and finally fighting for a few seconds before the episode ends. Two interesting things about this episode are Miriallia returning to the Archangel crew and commenting on dumping Dearka and while his memories have been erased Auel can’t shake the idea that he’s forgetten something. This could’ve gone on to be an interesting idea of the extendend soldiers figuring out just how far the Earth Alliance is willing to go to achieve its goals. Unfortuantely what happens in the next episode prevents that idea from going further.

The second episode is easily the best of the four. The Minerva goes up against the Earth Alliance and Orb again leading to non-stop action for the whole episode. Shinn once again rips apart the battlefield and Auel meets his end. It was somewhat disapointing to see him go because of the slight memory relapse he had in the previous episode, plus we never learned what happened to his mother. His character really could’ve been used for a bit longer. Still Shinn’s tactic of ejecting the Blast Silhouette before it got hit and used the smoke screen to sneak in and Strike the Abyss was brilliant. The best moment in the whole episode was when Shinn went into Seed mode and dodged one of Kira’s attacks. It was nice to see the shocked impression on Kira’s face after watching him defeat everyone effortlessly up to now. Athrun was a huge disapointment in this episode. All he did was dodge, hit and run, plus he got distracted by his doubts again. If his head was completely in the battle and he’d gone all out he could’ve easily taken out the hot-headed Sting. Unfortunately his half hearted attitude costs him big when he confronts Kira. I realize the Freedom is technologically superior to the Saviour but a pilot like Athrun should’ve been able to put at least a few dents in the Freedom. Yet another boring victory for Kira. The guy even flew away from Athrun a few times because he was more concerned about Cagalli than fighting him, come on!!!
The third episode is sadly mainly a flashback episode recovering events that happened to Kira, Athrun and Lacus in the original Gundam Seed. Since it’s told from Durandal’s point of view we learn a few new things, he knew Rau Le Creuset, he did in fact have a relationship with Talia (the Captain of the Minerva) and we’re also given some possible foreshadowing about another character. I loved the dialogue when Durandal thinks back to his conversations with Rau Le Creuset about Destiny and death. Still since the majority of the episode was clips it was overall unacceptably weak.

The next was better than the clip show, but not by much. The surviving members of the Orb Fleet that was obliterated by Shinn join the Archangel crew, unsatisfied with Orb’s current political direction. Kira goes on about how simply fighting one side is not the answer and has no idea what the right path is. Give me a break!!! While I would’ve prefered it if the writers had made the Earth Forces appear more human, the fact is so far they’ve been nothing but warmongers perfectly Ok with killing off all Coordinators. ZAFT is clearly the lesser of two evils. The neutral stance the Archangel has been taking is like Switzerland being neutral, refusing to fight the Nazis during World War 2. The Earth Forces are who are really hurting Orb, forcing the country to fight. ZAFT simply defended itself. What the Archangel should do is fight the Earth Forces till they are so weakened Orb can withdraw from the treaty it made without facing any serious consequences. You think Cagalli who is a politician could’ve at least figured that out by now. While Cagalli was Ok in the orginal Seed, she is easily the character I hate the most in this series. The sight of her and the Orb soldiers crying was pathetic. Back on the Minerva we learn that the Saviour is unrepairable and is now nothing but scrap metal. So in the end it did nothing but take out grunt suits which is a shame because it was a cool looking Gundam. Shinn meanwhile makes a dangerous decision regarding Stella. All in all not the best, but a fun watch.
My son is a huge Gundam Seed Destiny fan and he said he really enjoyed this DVD and would recommend it to anyone. He has collected the whole series so far, and should be getting Vol. 8 any day now.
