The entire GITS universe, whether it be the original manga, motion pictures, or the adapted TV series, are all heavily philosophical so I’m not sure why the last reviewer bothers to complain. These next episodes set up the confrontations later with Kuze to illustrate his true intentions as a radical reformist but needs the cover of a terrorist to strike fear into the government. The episodes are consistent, driven, and well acted so I can’t see giving this less than five stars. If you’re not able to unweave the philosophical web of dialogue that GITS (or The Matrix) lays before you then I suggest you find a brainless action film that the general public is used to having explained for them…you’ll only get frustrated with this kind of complicated thinking.

This is what you would expect from the team that makes this awsome film and series! Visuals are as always, Top notch in the anime world, with thought provoking story lines, that make it so you can’t wait to watch the next episode in the series. If you like you anime like i do with realistic looking charaters, and just alaround good damn movie. you have to have this in your collection, along with the whole series!

So, you are a pretty dedicated fan of the Stand Alone Complex anime and are looking at this product and wondering if it’s worth grabbing?

Strictly speaking, you do not absolutely NEED this bundle of GitS:SAC extras to enjoy the series, nor does it contain a full analysis of the entire first season run (in fact, it limits its scope to the first 19 episodes of SAC).

That being said, the book and DVD are a fascinating look into the backstory and background of the series (with an impending second log inevitably due to continue the work of this edition).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex Official Log DVD/Guide Book! Click Here

Addressing the DVD first, there is some interesting content here that comes from the actors, visual production team and directors of the first season. The DVD, however, is not meat and potatoes of this set.

It is the scope of the book with its breakdown of the characters, technology, episodes and ideas behind this series that gives this set its value. While containing a lot of information, the book is very much a visual exploration of the series and highlights the manner in which the characters of SAC were translated from the manga to the film (including some early working versions of Kusanagi, Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito and the like).

The set is uniquely packaged in that the DVD is inset into the book which is held by a clear plastic book jacket.

A word of warning however that the DVD is held in place by means of a small plastic hub which can easily be disloged from the book since it is only very lightly adhered to the cover. My copy dislodged one day without cause (it simply fell out of the book while I was reading it)even though I managed to stick it back on. It still falls out from time to time though.

Overall, this set is a pretty good companion of GitS:SAC for those looking for more info beyond the short interviews contained in the series DVD’s. If this is what you are looking for be sure to pick it up–despite it’s moderately expensive price.

I collect TONS of shell memorabilia and frankly this is one piece that is not really worth it. to put it simply, The logbook has too many flaws to make worthy of its $50 dollar price tag.

Firstly, THE GOOD: the book contains some information about the franchise history and stuff about all the pervious comic versions. Furthermore, the book contains character designs, translation notes, weapons designs, tank designs, interviews with the production crew… etc…./ It also contains explanations of all the general technology in the GITS world too. ALSO the DVD is very interesting and contains allot of very cool interviews and stuff. Furthermore, the print quality of the book is also top notch

NOW THE BAD: The thing that really makes this book have questionable worth is the show descriptions. Now this is the meat of the book, this is what the book is for really!! but sadly its completely botched. The show descriptions are *basic overviews OF THE FIRST 19 Episodes. There’s absolutely nothing to gain form the descriptions if you paid attention to the show.

**BUT-once in a while you might get a fact or two that makes you say *wow I didn’t know that*…

** ALSO, because the book only goes to episode 19,(there were 26 episodes in the first season of SAC) it fails to relate the events the show completely and it fails to show the complete growth of the Tachikoma’a and the climax of the Laughing-Man situation. In other words, they skipped the most important part of the series, its crazy climatic ending that had everyone on edge.

**moreover- the other glaring oversight is the size of the print in this book. Its about a size 8 or 7 font and is incredibly difficult to read even at a normal distance with 20-20 vision, so you must hold the book up close to read it, which can get tiring after a while…

OVERALL- in the end, this product is for diehard GITS fans who want a collectors SAC book and dvd. If your just a general fan of GITS SAC who’s not a collector, skip over this logbook and wait to see if the *Second Gig* logbook is better. OR wait till the price drops to about $25-35,

After the adequate “Baseball” and downright disappointing “Jazz,” some of the luster associated with the name of Ken Burns has worn off in the last few years. I couldn’t help but wonder, when I saw that this documentary was in the works, if we were doomed to get more of the same from Burns, especially considering the involvement of Stanley Crouch in the project. Thankfully, it appears that Burns has returned to form with “Unforgivable Blackness.”

Really, it is about time somebody did a documentary on Johnson. If he isn’t the best heavyweight ever, there are only maybe two others that one could put ahead of him. Only Ali can rival him for mastery of the science of boxing, yet Johnson is comparatively obscure these days.

In many ways, this documentary spends relatively little time on the actual sport of boxing itself, which will be an annoyance to boxing enthusiasts. Personally, I would have enjoyed a more detailed discussion of just how great Johnson’s defensive skills and the fact that he was rarely a slugger in the ring (Stanley Ketchel notwithstanding), but this might have been boring to a mainstream audience. Mostly, Burns returns to familiar territory — race relations in an earlier era — only with a dynamic personal & rebellious twist in the person of Johnson, who was utterly unconcerned with his critics, be they black or white, and who felt no compulsion to work for the betterment of anyone other than himself.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Unforgivable Blackness - The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson! Click Here

Even though I was relatively familiar with the government’s persecution of Johnson via the Mann Act, it was still amazing to see just how many resources the government was willing to expend in order to bring one black boxer under its control. Laissez faire obviously is in the eye of the beholder.

To Burns’ eternal credit, even though he clearly sympathizes with Johnson, he also points out that Johnson drew his own color line once he became champion. Burns has been notorious for serious omissions in past projects, and I fully expected to hear nothing about the fact that Johnson repeatedly refused to give Sam Langford (the greatest heavyweight never to become champion — end of discussion) a shot at the title. However, Burns does discuss, albeit somewhat briefly, the fact that Johnson spurned other black boxers because there was a) no money in it, and b) the various White Hopes were much easier pickings. Thanks to Johnson, a whole generation of very skilled black boxers missed its opportunity to fight for a championship, and this is a fact that simply cannot be ignored. If Burns had omitted this, it would have badly tainted the documentary. Good for him!

The archival footage is especially splendid, even with the silly little sound effects added in. Also, kudos to Burns for including Bert Sugar in his cast of talking heads. One can listen to Stanley Crouch only for so long; better to have someone who has spent his whole career writing about the sport of boxing actually discuss the sport. The voiceover work is, as usual stellar. The music (provided in part by Wynton Marsalis, I guess) is decent enough.

All in all, this documentary represents the return of Ken Burns to his earlier form, and I hope continues to produce documentaries of this calibre, although it would be hard to find a story as fascinating as that of Jack Johnson.

I knew something of Jack Johnson before I saw this documentary, but Ken Burns tells his story with incredible detail. One of the many revelations for me was the astonishing level of accepted racism that was prevalent at the time. Supposedly reputable newspapers (e.g., The New York Times) and authors (Jack London) are quoted at length, with bigoted excerpts that border on inflammatory. One couldn’t imagine hearing something of this nature from today’s mainstream media. Just the very idea that a black man/African-American could defeat a white man seemed preposterous to many; so much so that boxers often refused to even fight one. It took Jack Johnson a long time to get a shot at the title; but once he got it, it took white America even longer to get it back. What stands out in this program is the towering figure of Johnson himself.

I couldn’t help noticing that Johnson appeared to be the prototype for the modern American athlete. All the brashness, bravado, conceit and over-indulgence that we associate with the “headliners” of today…all this began with Johnson. He seemed to revel in flouting society’s conventions. When you think of the arrogance of Ali, the controversy of Jim Brown, the bravado of Namath…Jack Johnson was all this before they were. At the same time, however, I can’t help but remember Charles Barkley saying “I am not a role model.” Jack Johnson wasn’t either, as much as Black America wanted him to be. In the end, he was too loud, too defiant, too controversial. He was too much, really, for the times. But I came away from this program thinking exactly what he wanted his epitaph to be: Jack Johnson WAS a man. No doubt about that.

Five stars.

[This is a review of the DVD version] If you love old bad SF movies but haven’t ever seen them given the Mystery Science Theater treatment, you owe it to yourself to pick up this DVD! Mike Nelson and his robot pals Crow and Tom Servo watch this relentlessly silly turkey of a movie (a scientist saves the severed head of his girlfriend and puts her in a pan, where she pleads with him to let her die. How sloppily-put-together is this film? The filmmakers apparently forgot their own title and call it “The Head That Wouldn’t Die” in the end credits.)–and throughout the entire film, Tom and the `bots mercilessly riff on the film with funny comments and jokes that’ll have you rolling in your seats. Long a staple of Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel, this is one of the first DVDs of this classic comedy series (many others are available on VHS). In addition to the pristine and clear picture you get with DVD, Rhino has also included the full *original* version of “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” on the flip-side of the disc so you can see it without Mike and the `bots (to riff on your own, perhaps?). The DVD menus are innovative and worth checking out just for the clever swish-pan of the bridge of the Satellite of Love (Crow, Servo, and Gypsy flash past us). If I had any quibble at all it’s a minor one… why is the DVD chapter that begins the film entitled “It’s Movie Time!” when every MSTie knows it should be “We’ve got Movie Sign!”? But I’ll put up with minor problems like that as long as Rhino continues to give us these great reissues of classic MST3K episodes. Now if they’d only release “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” and “Outlaw”… (Also recommended in this series: the DVD version of “Mystery Science Theater 3000: Eegah.”)

I first saw this movie when I was in the 4th grade or thereabouts, and it scared the living bejesus out of me.

But what do you know when you’re in the 4th grade?

Now that MST3K has reissued this movie and I’ve watched it perhaps 10 times, I laugh all the way through it. The dialogue is awful. The basic plot recalls countless puns about folks who lose their heads and flash-in-the-pan actresses. Mad Scientist Bill Courtner’s girlfriend has lost hers in a fiery car crash (”Honey roasted,” comments one of Mike’s companions). Obsessed scientist that he is, he keeps her head alive in a lasagna pan full of “adreno-serum” in the basement laboratory of his country place. She says, “Let me die!” enough times that you’re ready to oblige her, then strikes up a liaison, sort of, with the thing that lives in Bill’s closet–the product of an earlier experiment that went awry. (When Bill looks in the closet, you’re dying to hear, “Omygawd, it’s Rosanne!” but Mike’s pals missed that one.) The scene in the seedy strip club sends me into hysterics. Best line here, robot Crow observing one of the girls: “I must have blood before the night is done!”

There are some godawful blunders. For example, the scene in which Bill enters the country place with a new girlfriend follows very closely after his assistant Curt’s having stumbled around the same room bleeding profusedly from … shall we say, a farewell-to-arms type encounter with the thing in the closet. So where’s all the blood?

The ending is a bit gory (though tame by today’s standards). The thing in the closet certainly wins the ugly award for that year. But when he/it turns away toward the stairwell after making mayhem starting a fire in the lab and taking a bite out of poor Bill’s throat, we see another ghastly flaw: you can actually see where the mask is tied on at the back of the actor’s head! Now THAT’s funny!

Not to mention how Bill’s old girlfriend, still in her pan at the end, manages to laugh without the benefit of chest, diaphragm or lungs. (I forgot, she has neck juice.)

Incidentally, in my version the end credits also screw up the title, calling it The HEAD That Wouldn’t Die.

Mike and his robots’ running commentary, though, offers nonstop comedy you can enjoy over and over again. I haven’t been panning this movie. (Sorry!) Four stars for amusement value.

The stories in “Dora’s Ultimate Adventure Collection” are both entertaining and educational. Preschoolers love the characters and the adventures. They love how the characters invite them to participate in the action. They are proud of the fact they have a hand in Dora and Boots accomplishing their goals, whether it’s finding Dora’s lost teddy bear, reuniting Mary with her little lamb or just going home. They love learning a few Spanish words, which fosters their curiousity about and acceptance of other cultures. They love learning sequencing and logic skills, even though they don’t have any idea that is what they are doing.

In addition to the stories, the DVDs in “Dora’s Ultimate Adventure Collection” contain special features. A riddle game and a couple flash card games provide interactive fun. There are also two short episodes from Noggin’s Oobi for added entertainment.

Perfect for children who can’t get enough of Dora the Explorer (and, really, that means almost ALL preschoolers), “Dora’s Ultimate Adventure Collection” provides an abundance of self-esteem building, educational entertainment.

This set includes three Dora DVDs. If your kids are Dora fans at all, this is a great way to stock up on Dora. The videos are typical of the TV show-engaging, educational adventures that get little minds involved in the learning process. And when it’s over, they’ll know a little Spanish too. Great show, great value.

The Young Indiana Jones adventures come to DVD. Agreed I wish it was cheaper but then consider you are dealing with Paramount that charges over $100 per season for any of the Star Trek series. Considering that each episode is an hour and a half movie in itself and this does not seem quite so unreasonable. Furthermore it includes alot of extras whether you want them or not. I grant you I would like to see a 7 disk edition of just the episodes for a substancial savings. Personally I’m just thrilled to finally see them come to DVD. I am sure if you’re patient you can probably get a package deal once all the volumes are released. The first 12-disc set includes seven feature-length episodes as well as 38 in-depth companion documentaries, an historical overview, an interactive game and an interactive timeline. The series was shot in 35 countries and showed key figures in the coming of age of the modern world. The interviews include celebrities like Gen. Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, Gloria Steinem, Martin Scorsese, Barbara Boxer, James Earl Jones, Hal David, and Deepak Chopra.

This volume includes the episodes (I have described the first story on each disc, they each include a second story):

My First Adventure - Indy and T.E. Lawrence solve a murder mystery in Egypt.

Passion For Life - Indy goes on safari in Kenya with Teddy Roosevelt.

The Perils of Cupid - Indy falls in love with the daughter of Duke Franz Ferdinand in Vienna, Austria.

Travels with Father - Indy joins up with Leo Tolstoy after an argument with his father while visiting Russia.

Journey of Radiance - Indy visits the Holy City Benares in the Far East and meets Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Spring Break Adventure - Indy meets Thomas Edison and tries to avoid German spies.

Love’s Sweet Song - Indy ends up in Ireland right before the Easter Rebellion mixed up with the resistance and he meets Winston Churchill.

The second volume is to be released December 2007 and the third volume in the Spring of 2008. If you shop around I think you will find Amazon has the best Pre-order price so far. The suggested retail being advertised several places is over $100. So I’m ordering mine here and now. This set is great family entertainment. It may not always have as much excitement and comedy as the Jone’s movies, but it makes up for it in other ways including good drama, history, and locations. I highly recomend this set.

Addendum:

Pro: This set is like seven feature length movies revolving around two stories on each disc. The documentaries created by George Lucas are quite good so please don’t rate it based on the price. The whole family will enjoy this set and the movies alone are easily worth $11.50 each. I received my set and viewed the first disc. The first disc was sharp and clear and the first episode and the four documentaries on it were all quite entertaining. I’m looking forward to watching the other 11 discs.

Con: Does not include the scenes of old Indiana Jones. In fact the overall editing is poor. You will notice episodes ending abruptly or jumping to an older Jones, then a younger Jones. The other con is the box is the standard Paramount cheap folding carboard with plastic disc inserts stuck in a flimsy cover like all the Star Trek sets. I would have preferred seven slim plastic DVD cases for the discs put in a firm cardboard cover. Sometimes the greed of Paramount really shows. I don’t mind paying the high price for quality. The series is worth the price, I just don’t think Paramount should have packaged such a great series in such a cheap box.

If you don’t already have this series on some format you may want this set as it may be years before they become available with the cut scenes put back it. If on the other hand you have the original televised series, forget this set and figure a way to get yours transferred to DVD.

Sadly the versions of the original episodes on this set have been badly edited, removing both the original opening titles and the present day introductions by an older eyepatched Indy (as Played by George Hall) . Basicly Lucasfilm has released the TV Movie edits in a roughly chronological order to show how Indiana Jones grew up , which on this volume creates major continuity blunders as the Age of Lead actor Corey Carrier will jump by two or three years in the space of one movie. then he magicly de-ages for the start of the next Movie in the set.

What is particularly insulting is the way in which the original pilot episode YOUNG INDIANA JONES AND THE CURSE OF THE JACKAL has lost its original second half which creates a discordant jump in the edited version on this set which is now called MY FIRST ADVENTURE

in the original version the story revolves around the theft of an Jackal headpiece from an egyptian tomb which is first investigated by young Indiana as played by Corey Carrier and then resolved by Sean Patrick Flannerys 16 year old version of Indy. the original version was well balanced , gripping and was resolved in the space of one episode. in the botched up version on this set all the Sean Patrick Flannerry material is gone, replaced with a story about Child slavery (episode 41)which renders MY FIRST ADVENTURE as a hatchet job.

Im selling my set and keeping my Original , UNCUT , off air copies from the original transmissions, as they are what I and a huge number of fans wish to own instead of this travesty

This is a heavily edited version narrated by Sigourney Weaver that was shown on the Discovery Channel in the US. It doesn’t hold a candle to original BBC version narrated by David Attenborough. It has awkward pauses for commercials (that obviously aren’t there) and a huge amount of missing footage. Plus Ms. Weaver doesn’t have nearly the gravitas as a narrator of Mr. Attenborough.

Make sure you get the other version.

I can’t speak highly enough about this series. It is excellent both terms of terms of the material and how it’s organized. And visually, well it is simply stunning. In this sense I give this product 5 stars.

However, some of the quality is lost when viewing on DVDs. I originally saw the series in HD on television. It was so exceptionally good that I wanted to buy a copy. (This is saying something when you consider this purchase nearly doubled the number of DVD’s I have bought for my personal use. DVD’s for the kids don’t count.) Since I don’t own a blu-ray player, we bought the DVDs. There definitely was a difference in the visual quality when viewing it on the DVD format. Thus while I do recommend purchasing this product, I would recommend buying the blu-ray format instead if you have a player.

First of all, let’s start with the first feature in this DragonBall Z Double Feature DVD: The History of Trunks.

This TV Special (or movie, whichever you prefer to call it) was made to show the horrible past that the well-liked character, Trunks, has experienced before traveling back in time to warn Goku and his friends of the looming android threat.

In Trunks’ timeline, Androids 17 and 18 has been set loose on the world by the evil Dr. Gero, to wreak havoc on the human race. Goku, having died of a heart disease before Dr. Gero’s evil vision came to fruition, was not able to help his friends fight the Androids. Thus, 17 and 18 brutally murdered them all, save one: Goku’s son, Gohan. At the time, Trunks was only a baby.

Now, 13 years later, Trunks is aching to fight the Androids, despite his mother’s wishes. After stumbling upon a city full of people that 17 and 18 had annihilated, Trunks asks Gohan to train him. Gohan agrees, and the two begin training.

Not too long after, Gohan and Trunks witness a new attack by the Androids. Gohan decides to go and fight, but he won’t allow Trunks to go with him. Will he survive alone against the Androids? You’ll have to watch to find out!

STORY: 9/10

The storyline is great: one of DragonBall Z’s better stories.

MUSIC: 7/10

I normally prefer the American soundtrack to the anime, but in this case, I have to say: go with the Japanese score. It’s much better than the faux-rap and bad rock music that Funimation brought to the table.

VIDEO QUALITY: 9/10

The remastering process’ effect on the video is quite obvious. It looks clearer than ever.

________________

Now, let’s move on to the second TV Special in this double feature: Bardock, the Father of Goku.

Enter the Saiyan race, a band of ruthless warriors who transform into giant apes in the moonlight.

Bardock and his team have just completed a mission on another planet, having just exterminated another race of beings. However, they seem to have missed one.

In a sudden move, one of the creatures bursts out from under the rocks and stabs Bardock in the back of his neck. Afterwards, as Bardock looks on in shock, the creature explains that he has transferred psychic powers into Bardock, which will allow him to see the bitter end of the Saiyan race.

Not liking what the creature has told him, Bardock kills it. He and his team proceed to fly back to Planet Vegeta. However, in his healing process Bardock is plagued by visions of the future of planet Vegeta and his newborn son, Kakkarot. But will he be able to warn everyone and stop the destruction of his planet before it’s too late?

STORY: 8/10

It’s not the best story ever, but it’s definitely intriguing and interesting enough to keep you wondering what happens next.

MUSIC: 10/10

In this feature, I would recommend the Dub Music. It has a sort of rock-like feel, without being too overpowering.

VIDEO QUALITY: 9/10

The video quality is GREAT. I love watching this on my big TV. The coloring has obviously been fixed as well.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this release to any person wondering if they should buy it or not. It is a great release to add to your collection, even if you have/used to have the original DVD release-especially considering Funimation is planning on releasing all of the DragonBall Z movies in this format (i.e. Remastered Double Feature Steelbooks). Thus, without this, your DBZ collection would NOT be complete when all of the movies and seasons have been released.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

History of Trunks is a great movie all around, a good tragedy ending in hope (or HOPE!! if you know what I mean). Bardock however seems to have been a subpar dub. I watched both and the details that were omitted or changed in his lines are quite unnecessary. This includes details about him talking about his son (changed to something unrelated like ‘Oh I better not waste time’). That’s coming from a long time fan of the dub, they just botched this one up. But the original is still there, so it gets credit where due. Oh again for the faint of heart: cropping unnoticeable.

Pretty good trash that is well embellished by Billy Bob Briggs comments. I’m just listing this ’cause Amazon hasn’t … at least yet.
