The 1970’s were loaded with forgotten films where nature struck back at man because of his mingling with pollution, poison or sheer carelessness (”Grizzly” - Jaws on Land, “Night of the Lepus” - giant killer rabbits), but “Frogs” stands out because it did not take itself too seriously and the cast which was headed by 50’s star Ray Milland seemed to enjoy themselves filming it. Ray Milland heads a large family in the south which is gathering to celebrate his birthday. But for some reason the ole homestead seems to be bombarded with frogs and other bayou wildlife, so Papa Milland attempts to destroy them through whatever means he can including poison. Big mistake, it seems the frogs are not too happy about this and along with their reptile friends, including some nasty alligators, pick off the family members one by one. Although at times more hilarious than thrilling, “Frogs” does have a few chills and if you are looking for one of those good old drive-in movie types, this will do the trick. The cast is mainly a mix of B list actors including the usually wooden Sam Elliot, who seemed to appear in almost every other 70’s flick. Judy Pace as a kooky clan member catching butterflies is hilarious. Rarely shown on television, (and then it is edited) pick up this nature versus man flick and enjoy.

I can’t believe it…I actually found proof that at some point in his life, actor Sam Elliot did not, I repeat, did not have gray hair…it appears his natural color was brown. I only mention this because it seems nearly every film I’ve seen him in, he’s got those thick, silvery locks. Directed by George McCowan (The Magnificent Seven Ride!), Frogs (1972) stars the aforementioned Elliot (Road House, Tombstone), Academy Award winner Ray Milland (The Lost Weekend), and primetime soap goddess Joan Van Ark (”Knots Landing”), in her feature film debut. Also appearing is Adam Roarke (The Stunt Man), Judy Pace (Brian’s Song), Lynn Borden (Black Mama, White Mama), David Gilliam (The Eagle Has Landed), George Skaff (Detroit 9000), and Holly Irving (Glass Houses).

As the film begins we see a man (whom we later learn is named Pickett Smith, played by Elliot) in a canoe, floating around in a swampy area, taking photographs of the local wildlife. Soon afterwards he turns his camera’s eye towards all the pollution…damn mankind and his pollutin’ ways! We find out later Smith is some sort of freelance photojournalist doing a piece on pollution and the environment, perhaps with the idea of making a difference…which is fine, but I’m thinking if’n he really wanted to make a difference, he could start by actually picking up the trash instead of just taking pictures of it…oh well…anyway, Smith paddles his way out to opens waters where’s he promptly swamped by some a-hole and Joan Van Ark in a speedboat (the guy driving the boat was drinking a beer, and I kept expecting him to throw the empty over the side, you know, because man is so thoughtless with his waste, but, surprisingly, it didn’t happen). The couple, who happen to be brother and sister or something, take Smith to a posh, gothic southern mansion on a nearby island owned by a curmudgeonly, crotchety, wheelchair bound wealthy industrialist named Jason Crockett (Milland), who’s currently in the middle of an annual 4th of July celebration/birthday bash that none of his relatives want to be at, but they love his money so they feel obligated to show up out of fear that they may be neglected from the will…and there are quite a few of them, supplying quite the pool of future potential victims (when you’ve seen as many films as I have, this is how you tend to views things). It’s about this time when we learn of Jason’s contemptuous attitudes towards nature (I used one of his lines for the title of my review), including, but not limited to, heavy spraying and systematically poisoning of the area around his estate in order to keep the `pests’ in check (I’m sure all that won’t come back to bite him in the bum). I got news for you…it ain’t working as there’s about a bazillion reptilian and amphibious creatures crawling, hopping, slithering, sliming around the estate, their presence is becoming more and more intrusive…and then the deaths come as Mother Nature (metaphorically speaking) commands her creep crawly denizens to fight and take back what’s rightfully theirs…’Today the pond! Tomorrow the world!’

Okay, okay, this movie is pretty silly, but I was entertained specifically because I wasn’t expecting too much. By the time this film came out, the once powerful star status of Milland had been thoroughly (and sadly) subjugated into bloody submission, appearing in such cinematic fodder as The Premature Burial (1962), Panic in Year Zero! (1962), and Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963)…and his torturous slide into B movie Hell didn’t end here, as he went on to appear in such classics like The Thing with Two Heads (1972), Terror in the Wax Museum (1973), and The Attic (1980). His role here is pretty much the same role he played throughout the latter part of his career, that of the controlling, stubborn, pain in the rear, jerkhole whom you just pretty much want to throttle within an inch of his life from the git go…and he’s the most interesting character in the film. Sam Elliot’s character is a snooze, basically acting as the soothsayer to Milland’s Julius Caesar, forewarning of the `Ides of March’ i.e. the impending invasion, that is when he’s not trying to use the phone which he knows to be dead because every damn time he picks it up it’s there’s never any connection. Another thing that annoyed me was there was one woman who did nothing but complain…perhaps she had a right, as her husband was a philandering, drunken a-hole, but still, it got old fairly quickly…and who dressed Miss Van Ark? That yellow one piece has to be one of the most unflattering outfits I’ve ever seen. All right, there weren’t a lot of likeable characters in this film, but that’s soon taken care of as the deaths come fast and furious (usually due more to a character’s own stupidity than anything else), by any number of various creepy crawlies, not just frogs. The simplistic story moves along okay, riddled with continuity errors and an over abundance of nature shots (it was pretty obvious the frogs were either prodded or tossed into reaction within numerous scenes), but then sort of fizzles out at the end…I think my favorite scene involve poor old Iris…she really got the full treatment, so to speak, during her climatic sequences…there were some good aspects about the film, like the overall atmosphere of the film, highlighted by Les Baxter’s spooky scoring.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Frogs! Click Here

Provided on this MGM release is both the widescreen (1.85:1) version, enhanced for 16 X 9 TVs, along with the fullscreen, pan & scan formats. The picture quality is relatively good, but I did notice a few flaws, and a couple of scenes were a bit grainy. The Dolby Digital mono audio comes through pretty clearly. There really isn’t any special features, but there is a trailer, one that features one of the characters dying in a completely different manner than she did within the film…

Cookieman108

By the way, if I learned anything from this movie it’s that if you’re running through the woods with a shotgun, best make sure the safety is on lest you accidentally kneecap yourself (Doh!) and get ate up by spiders…

Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, the movie version of Fiddler on the Roof features Topol as Tevye the Milkman, a poor Jewish husband and father living in pre-revolutionary Russia. His story is inevitably tragic, but humorous and touching along the way.

The movie is filled with asides from Tevye, as he reveals his thoughts to the camera. He is forever quoting “the good book,” sometimes correctly, sometimes not so correctly.

As was tradition during this time, the matchmaker sets up all marriages. Tevye’s daughters aren’t too happy about this (as is shown through the famous song, Matchmaker, Matchmaker), and the older three eventually set up their own marriages.

Tzeitel, the oldest, falls in love with Motel, the poor tailor, and they ask Tevye’s permission to marry. He finally relents and they have a proper Jewish wedding. Hodel falls in love with a revolutionary who has been staying with Tevye and Golde and their family. She leaves her family to follow him in the heartbreaking song, “Far From the Home I Love.” Chava, the delicate middle daughter, falls in love with Fyedka, a Russian. Tevye forbids this marriage, for he cannot turn from his faith. Chava chooses love over family as shown through ballet, and Tevye has no choice but to count her as dead.

Tevye’s story ends as the Jewish community is forced from Anatevka. Even in this hard time, Tevye is faithful that everything will turn out all right in the end.

The music in this movie is absolutely beautiful. You’ll tap your feet to “If I Were a Rich Man,” and “Miracle of Miracles.” You’ll find tears in your eyes during “Sunrise, Sunset,” and “Far From the Home I Love.” You’ll laugh at Yente and during the dance at the bar.

This is a movie that belongs in everyone’s movie collection. It is a story that will last forever.

The Film:

Fiddler on the Roof is based on the tales of Russian Jewish life written by Shalom Alechem in the 1800s, with music scored by John Williams. Directed by Norman Jewison, it’s widely acknowledged to be one of the best musicals ever made. Tevye, played by the famous jewish actor Topol, lives in the enclave of Anatevka with his wife and _6_ daughters. Insulated & protected by their Orthodox traditions, Tevye must face, with a poignant combination of humor, sorrow and acceptance, the marriage of his three eldest daughters in a series of increasingly unacceptable unions. How far can tradition be bent and still maintain the center of his family and his community’s existence? Do we place tradition over family? Oswald Morris’ beautiful cinematography and Jewison’s compelling film-making pursue these questions both for the residents of Anatevka and for us in our ever-changing worlds.

The DVD:

A marvel, this film has never looked or sounded better for home viewing - a remixed Dolby 5.1 soundtrack and crystal-clear picture on a double-layer disc make this a contribution to your film library you’ll not regret. Jewison & Topol’s commmentary give you some ideas behind the making of the film, what the director was trying to achieve, and how Topol moved his character from stage to screen. Director’s full use of the 70mm aspect ratio demands the anamorphic widescreen format used in this printing.

An ex-con engineers a race track heist in “The Killing,” a taut and suspenseful film noir from director Stanley Kubrick. Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) is fresh out of Alcatraz after five years, and immediately goes to work on a job he figures to be worth upwards of two million dollars. He puts together a gang who are not real criminals, just “Some guys with problems and a little larceny in them.” Marvin (Jay C. Flippen) is good for some front money Johnny needs; George (Elisha Cook Jr.) is a cashier at the track, and Mike (Joe Sawyer) is a bartender there; Randy (Ted de Corsia) is a cop with loan shark payment problems. Clay’s got it all figured out, a precision plan that can’t go wrong as long as everyone does his part and keeps quiet about it, before and after. But George has a wife, Sherry (Marie Windsor), who wants nice things, and he can’t resist the temptation to let her know it’s all going to get better real soon. Trouble is, Sherry has a boyfriend, Val (Vince Edwards), who has more than a little larceny in him, as well. As it is with all “perfect” plans, there are, after all, imperfections. The presentation of this film is not one of them, however; Kubrick keeps the tension high throughout, working with a tight narrative and an out of sequence chronology through which he dispenses bits of information, building the suspense, until it all fits together in the end like pieces of a giant puzzle (Much the same as Tarantino would do with “Pulp Fiction” many years later). The stoic delivery, coupled with the stark black and white photography of the film, creates an almost surreal, fatalistic ambience that works so well with this material; especially at the end, for it underscores the climax and heightens the drama of the final moment, all of which makes for a truly unforgettable scene. The supporting cast includes Coleen Gray (Fay), Kola Awariani (Maurice), Joe Turkel (Tiny), and Timothy Carey, who makes his detached and indifferent hit man, Nikki Arane, one of the most memorable characters in the film. It must be noted, however, that Elisha Cook Jr. gives what may have been his best performance ever, here. His scene, after it all goes bad for him and he stumbles into his apartment, bullet holes in his face and wide-eyed with acceptance, to confront Sherry, is so cool and underplayed that it becomes one of the lasting impressions of the movie. Kubrick wrote the screenplay (with some help from Jim Thompson with the dialogue), adapted from the novel “Clean Break” by Lionel White. “The Killing” is one of Kubrick’s earliest and best films; and it’s not just for Kubrick fans or for those who love the “noir” genre. This is an excellent piece of work that will definitely be appreciated by anyone who likes good movies.

The movie: THE KILLING (1956) by Stanley Kubrick, was the film which brought the twenty-eight year old director to Hollywood’s attention. Based on the 1955 crime novel CLEAN BREAK by Lionel White (and re-named THE KILLING for its 1988 redistribution), director Kubrick incorporated the author’s use of the staggered time interval (which began in chapter eight) within this well balanced and tightly paced story of seven disparate characters brought together to orchestrate a logically planned two million dollar robbery of a race track in broad daylight.
A brilliant effort of film making by Stanley Kubrick as he demonstrated an impeccable choice in cast selection, choosing established ‘B’ movie actors such as: Elisha Cook, Jr. as George Peatty and Jay C. Flippen as Marvin Unger (both actors had appeared in “The Three Stooges” skits more than once); then Sterling Hayden as the main character, Johnny Clay: though one of the beauties of this film is that all of the actors had such memorable performances. The limited acting abilities of these stars only added to the subtle gritty reality of their lumpenprolitariat roles which carried this film as much as any special effect.
While Stanley Kubrick wrote the screenplay and maintained a number of elements from the book, he eliminated Lionel White’s character of Maurice Cohen and had Johnny Clay assume those duties; and also replaced the boxer, Tex, with the burly (and hairy) wrestler Maurice Oboukhof for the spectacular bar room fight diversion. In the book, Marvin Unger deeply despised Johnny Clay; but in the movie, Unger demonstrated a fatherly pride and deep paternal admiration for Johnny Clay - the movie is noted for its admirable male commeraderie!
But how much more was Stanley Kubrick influenced for this movie outside of the Lionel White novel was suggested during the actual stick-up scene performed by Sterling Hayden’s character, Johnny Clay. In the book, Johnny tied a loose handkerchief around his face as a disguise, but this was changed in the movie to a full rubber clown mask - almost an exact duplicate of the masks published in police photographs used by the bandits in the 1950s Brinks robbery in Boston; a robbery that was then nationally advertised as “The Crime of the Century”! The similarities continued as the Brinks building was robbed of two million dollars by seven armed men in rubber masks and got clean away. This is too strong a resemblance to be ignored, and the well-read Stanley Kubrick may have also been influenced by this event, coupled with the novel CLEAN BREAK, to produce his advanced and visionary robbery debut film.
Still, the movie: THE KILLING by Stanley Kubrick, is a brilliant and typically Kubrickian ahead-of-its-time work of art which is a *must* watching experience in black & white for all its lasting and provocative scenes.

The entire GITS universe, whether it be the original manga, motion pictures, or the adapted TV series, are all heavily philosophical so I’m not sure why the last reviewer bothers to complain. These next episodes set up the confrontations later with Kuze to illustrate his true intentions as a radical reformist but needs the cover of a terrorist to strike fear into the government. The episodes are consistent, driven, and well acted so I can’t see giving this less than five stars. If you’re not able to unweave the philosophical web of dialogue that GITS (or The Matrix) lays before you then I suggest you find a brainless action film that the general public is used to having explained for them…you’ll only get frustrated with this kind of complicated thinking.

This is what you would expect from the team that makes this awsome film and series! Visuals are as always, Top notch in the anime world, with thought provoking story lines, that make it so you can’t wait to watch the next episode in the series. If you like you anime like i do with realistic looking charaters, and just alaround good damn movie. you have to have this in your collection, along with the whole series!

The episodes of the first two dvds (1-7) I thought were good.
I was introduced to Vampire Princess Miyu through the four OAV episodes involving Himiko the Spiritualist.

The TV episodes seemed to have less of a plot, and I was afraid that it would only be Miyu vanishing Shinmas to the dark and no other plot. But, by the second DVD, I was amazed at the animation improvement and plot development. By the third dvd (episodes 8-11) I was hooked and I watched each episode three times to make sure I got everything. All episodes in this DVD (vol 4) are amazing, though I thought Light of the Sea could have been shortened to one episode, but I guess they wanted a cliff hanger. My favorite is the last episode where Miyu shows how much she cares for arrogant human beings.

If you are Miyu fan, I would recommend this DVD wholeheartedly, but be sure to watch the three other DVDs before you get to this one.

All of the stories on this DVD turn on two of the most persistent themes of the Miyu stories - destiny and eternal life or immortality. Miyu’s destiny as a Guardian, the nature of her relationship with Larva, and the inexorable tragedy of the effects of the demonic Shinma on humans all play a part. But we are also brought to see that Miyu’s gift for granting a human eternal happiness, like the curse of immortality one gets from eating the flesh of a mermaid are not so much great boons as escapes from one reality into another. Thus they will always prove false for humans, who need to be able to make their own choices to find true happiness.

In ‘Garden of Crying Reeds’ a young man seeking his lost cat stumbles upon a beautiful woman at a foreboding mansion who expresses sympathy. When Chisato finds a kitten he decides to see if the woman would like to have it as a pet. Of course, the woman is a Shinma with a cat garden and Miyu must do some pruning.

‘Light of the Sea’ is a two-part story of Larva’s sudden disappearance when some of his old ‘friends’ come to Japan for a visit. At the same time, Miyu finds herself dealing with two local Shinma who have fallen in love with each other. Somehow, they hold part of the secret to Larva’s mystery. Miyu must fight for Larva’s freedom and then finds herself at war with Reiha, but not before we learn a great deal about the first meeting between the vampire and Larva.

In ‘Dream of the Mermaid’ another young man seeking escape from his own loss comes upon a mermaid in an aquarium. They find a form of love, but the mermaid is a Shinma. Deluded he wants to free her, but Miyu must intervene to fulfill her own destiny and bring an ancient legend to a conclusion.

In a change of pace episode, ‘Woman Priest,’ Miyu meets Yui-Li, a Chinese spiritualist and martial arts expert. She is hunting a Shinma that killed her family. Despite a very unfriendly initial meeting, she draws Miyu’s interest. The vampire helps her, but not the way expected.

So, you are a pretty dedicated fan of the Stand Alone Complex anime and are looking at this product and wondering if it’s worth grabbing?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex Official Log DVD/Guide Book! Click Here

Strictly speaking, you do not absolutely NEED this bundle of GitS:SAC extras to enjoy the series, nor does it contain a full analysis of the entire first season run (in fact, it limits its scope to the first 19 episodes of SAC).

That being said, the book and DVD are a fascinating look into the backstory and background of the series (with an impending second log inevitably due to continue the work of this edition).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex Official Log DVD/Guide Book! Click Here

Addressing the DVD first, there is some interesting content here that comes from the actors, visual production team and directors of the first season. The DVD, however, is not meat and potatoes of this set.

It is the scope of the book with its breakdown of the characters, technology, episodes and ideas behind this series that gives this set its value. While containing a lot of information, the book is very much a visual exploration of the series and highlights the manner in which the characters of SAC were translated from the manga to the film (including some early working versions of Kusanagi, Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito and the like).

The set is uniquely packaged in that the DVD is inset into the book which is held by a clear plastic book jacket.

A word of warning however that the DVD is held in place by means of a small plastic hub which can easily be disloged from the book since it is only very lightly adhered to the cover. My copy dislodged one day without cause (it simply fell out of the book while I was reading it)even though I managed to stick it back on. It still falls out from time to time though.

Overall, this set is a pretty good companion of GitS:SAC for those looking for more info beyond the short interviews contained in the series DVD’s. If this is what you are looking for be sure to pick it up–despite it’s moderately expensive price.

I collect TONS of shell memorabilia and frankly this is one piece that is not really worth it. to put it simply, The logbook has too many flaws to make worthy of its $50 dollar price tag.

Firstly, THE GOOD: the book contains some information about the franchise history and stuff about all the pervious comic versions. Furthermore, the book contains character designs, translation notes, weapons designs, tank designs, interviews with the production crew… etc…./ It also contains explanations of all the general technology in the GITS world too. ALSO the DVD is very interesting and contains allot of very cool interviews and stuff. Furthermore, the print quality of the book is also top notch

NOW THE BAD: The thing that really makes this book have questionable worth is the show descriptions. Now this is the meat of the book, this is what the book is for really!! but sadly its completely botched. The show descriptions are *basic overviews OF THE FIRST 19 Episodes. There’s absolutely nothing to gain form the descriptions if you paid attention to the show.

**BUT-once in a while you might get a fact or two that makes you say *wow I didn’t know that*…

** ALSO, because the book only goes to episode 19,(there were 26 episodes in the first season of SAC) it fails to relate the events the show completely and it fails to show the complete growth of the Tachikoma’a and the climax of the Laughing-Man situation. In other words, they skipped the most important part of the series, its crazy climatic ending that had everyone on edge.

**moreover- the other glaring oversight is the size of the print in this book. Its about a size 8 or 7 font and is incredibly difficult to read even at a normal distance with 20-20 vision, so you must hold the book up close to read it, which can get tiring after a while…

OVERALL- in the end, this product is for diehard GITS fans who want a collectors SAC book and dvd. If your just a general fan of GITS SAC who’s not a collector, skip over this logbook and wait to see if the *Second Gig* logbook is better. OR wait till the price drops to about $25-35,

Most of the videos in the Baby Einstein series are designed as `video board books’ for your baby and offer you the opportunity to interact with your child in the same way you do with books as well as act as a distraction for that deeply needed parental bathroom break. Most of the DVDs have the option to “play” or “repeat play” and are about 20-30 minutes in length — the repetition being very stimulating and comforting to the younger set.

The good things about this DVD are:

1. The animals
2. The farm scenes, especially the ones that show the various methods of ploughing the fields.
3. The puppet skits don’t repeat the same thing over and over again.
4. The Old MacDonald song
5. The song set to the Farmer in the Dell tune.
6. The pigs sliding into the mud puddle.
7. Has some good extras and not just flash cards and toy lists.

The not-so-good things about this DVD:

1. Too much of the music is slow, when it should be upbeat. Why plough to a lullaby?
2. Younger children like it, but it’s not easy adult viewing. This DVD puts me to sleep.
3. Some of the content is for babies, some for toddlers, but as a whole it doesn’t hold the interest over 24 months.

My son is now too old for the Baby Einstein series, and it’s time to move on. It’s been a great three years, and definitely essential viewing for children.

Thank you Baby Einstein, and goodbye.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Movie Streaming

There’s a simple reason this movie has taken so long to make, and it’s this: while Douglas Adams’ classic The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a hilarious book, it’s a rubbish novel.

I mean that in the nicest possible way - it’s one of my favourite books, but it’s barely a story at all - more a set of dead-eye, deadpan observations on the absurdity of life, and particularly the British way of life, revolving very loosely around a chap in a dressing-gown. While that’s great fodder for a comedy read, it’s no basis for a coherent, 90 minute motion picture, especially one having the American market in mind.

It’s a matter of record that Douglas Adams realised there was no story, but not until it was too late to fix it (about halfway through book two). From that point onwards made several attempts to pull everything back into a single coherent, archetypal story but totally failed, and in the process ruined the remaining three and a half books themselves, none of which are funny, let alone a good story.

A film-maker has a choice, therefore: stick with the material and film something which is not so much a screenplay as an extended, themed version of Saturday Night Live, or do some significant damage to the source material - “zap straight off to its major data banks and reprogram it with a very large axe”, if you will - and make a story out of it.

The first option will in equal measure thrill and infuriate the party faithful, but bore the rest of the population; the second will most likely infuriate the party faithful, but at least has a chance with everyone else. Since the Hitch-Hiker’s Guide is now twenty years old, there is probably a whole generation who, so far in their lives, have missed it altogether, so you can hardly blame director Garth Jennings for choosing option two.

What instead we should do is take our hats off to him: he’s fashioned a great story but preserved surprising amounts of the source; his innovations are sympathetic and in a couple of cases (the point-of-view gun and the face-slapping devices on the Vogsphere) are a match for the original material; the wonderful production design thoroughly captures the loveable Britishness of Adams’ story (the Vogons hover somewhere between the schoolmasters of `70s Pink Floyd and the sort of bureaucrats whom you might find behind the desks of some Ministry of Monty Python’s devising), and on top of all that he’s coaxed some wonderful performances out of the cast. Martin Freeman captures Arthur Dent’s everyman perfectly and has real chemistry with Zooey Deschanel’s Trillian; John Malkovich, Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey and both the original Arthur Dent and Marvin from the BBC TV series make hilarious cameos, as does the smiling face of the late creator himself, Douglas Adams, as the very last shot of the movie. That was a splendid touch.

The less forgiving purists are bound to gripe about what’s missing; but on the whole I’m the more forgiving sort of purist. Perhaps there is something sinister in the conspicuous omission the Babel Fish “proof” for the non-existence of God - was that a Disney-required edit or just my perfectly normal paranoia? - and I was a bit sad my favourite exchange in all of Douglas Adams’ writing was omitted (Arthur: “It’s at times like this, when I’m trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die from asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I’d listened to what my mother told me when I was young.” Ford: “Why? What did she say?” Arthur: “I don’t know, I didn’t listen”), but overall this was an extremely enjoyable, touching experience and I can’t think of a better way to have rounded off an otherwise trying Thursday.

Thursdays. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Olly Buxton

Having owned the first release of this movie on DVD, when I heard it was coming out on Blu-Ray I had to pick it up; after all, this was the movie that convinced me to pick up Douglas Adams’ spectacular written novels (from Hitchhiker’s to Dirk Gently) and give them a read. While watching the movie in 1080i was a pleasure, I was rather disappointed to find that many of the special features found on the original disc - including the absolutely brilliant interface with the interactive improbability drive that occasionally took you to an Easter Egg - were stripped out of the Blu-Ray disc. I could have even dealt with the loss of the interface in exchange for the movie showcase menu that allows you to access features, select scenes, and access the setup while the movie is playing, if only they had provided all the content on the original DVD. I’ve experienced this now on a couple of Blu-Ray discs and I find it quite upsetting (officially entering rant territory), that despite the capacity for Blu-Ray discs to hold 80% more data than a DVD, and 40% more data than a HD disc, that companies are skimping on features and selling the discs at an inflated price. While Blu-Ray may be the superior format, it’s not going to gain in market standing by the release of inferior products.

This documentary would be great for classes in elementary, secondary, or tertiary schools.

Bearden really practiced DuBois’ views on double consciousness. He blended African sculpture with cubism. He used pointilism and applied it to black American subjects. He portrayed the urban and rural landscapes.

Still, I have some questions. Danny Glover reads quotes from the artist. Bearden was not a Harlem Renaissance painter. He died in the 1980s. He was around after talkies. They show films of him in color. It’s not like he was Shakespeare. Surely they could have shown clips of him speaking for himself. They never say he was mute or had problems in front of the media.

Mr. Bearden was so light-skinned that I didn’t know that he was African American until well into the documentary. Eventually they show his parents and his mother looked white. One interviewee described him as “light-skinned” but then the subject is never brought up again. Why not? Malcolm X spoke often about what it was like to be light-skinned and have a white grandparent. Bearden had a light complexion but his subject matter always covered people of African descent in rich ebony and cocoa hues. One could ask why he never portrayed subjects of his own complection.

I’m sure that Bearden was a terrific artist. But anybody with a pair of scissors can make a collage. In a similar vein, I wonder why David Hockney is praised when anyone can take the photographs he has. I wish the documentary explored on a deeper level what was so special about Bearden’s collages or what else did he make besides collages.
