After reading the Current York Times article about the restoration process for Yellow Submarine, I had high hopes for this DVD. I was not disappointed.

The color saturation is sumptuous. There are some imperfections, but on the whole this is a first class restoration. If you want delight in the restoration, study at the modern theatrical trailer or the “making of” documentary extras.

The re-mastered audio brings original complexity and detail to familiar Beatle material (even on my strictly middlebrow home entertainment system) . The opening a cappella chorus of “Nowhere Man” sounded like it was recorded yesterday.

For a generation that has not seen this film, Yellow Submarine is a perfect time capsule for 60’s psychedelic era. The film begins in under the sea in Pepperland, an idyllic musical community, which is attacked by the music-hating Blue Meanies. “Young Fred” manages to hurry the attack in the Yellow Submarine, which takes him to England. He recruits the Beatles to return with him to Pepperland to join the battle between the forces of order (the Blue Meanies) and the forces of creativity and adore. The place is comely worthy as hokey as it sounds, but it is merely a vehicle for the music, humor, surrealism, artistic and social sensibilities of the psychedelic 60’s. And it is there that the movie emphatically succeeds.

The animation is certainly not as sophisticated as some more unique efforts, but it stands up remarkably well. There was a lot of revolutionary (for the 60’s) integration of animation and live action. The colors are magnificent. Visually, this is calm a very keen film.

If you don’t like the Beatles music, or are bored by animation, discontinue away. If you are on the fence about getting this DVD, prefer it. You won’t be disappointed. And if you cherish the Beatles, this DVD should proceed to the top of your list.

You’re browsing the video rental racks, and there it is: a blue background with yellow lettering and a trippy submarine (yellow at that) on the veil. The movie? THE BEATLES: YELLOW SUBMARINE.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Yellow Submarine! Click Here

Having only seen this movie (well, and MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, which you probably haven’t seen, and there’s a reason for that….) of The Beatles I cannot compare it to the other 3 (HARD DAY’S NIGHT, Abet!, and LET IT BE) . So I can only operate in this sphere of knowledge.

YELLOW SUBMARINE, simply attach, is one irregular movie. They capture elements of The Beatles mythology and throw it all together and waste up with a dwelling called Pepperland which, for some uncommon reason (I don’t believe the film says why, though I may be immoral) is being invaded by Blue Meanies. Oh yes…… The Blue Meanies want to obtain everything blue. It has the very hippy or 1960s message of esteem and music will put the day, which is what happens. Through the procedure we procure several visually dynamic (and altogether outlandish) music video segments. The Beatles were ahead of their times, let me bellow you. I AM THE WALRUS is one of the first music videos.

Anyway, its campy fun, though when watching the film it seems a lot longer than it actually is. The animation portrays a convoluted world, bulky of new beings found only in a drug-induced cosmos. Throw that in with the fact its mainly about The Beatles, and we have a very trippy and fun movie. Jeremy is the most memorable character.

And no, The Beatles do not play themselves. In that respect, this isn’t really a Beatles movie at all, its unprejudiced a film produced by their company about them, and they did a microscopic afterword (you stare them for like a miniature or 2) . It also set aside in the excised “Hey Bulldog” sequence from the American version. They advertised that there was a lost Beatles song that would be included with the recent release of Yellow Submarine. It wasn’t a song at all, objective the lost footage. Liars. No, I’m not bitter at all!

This is a nice release of the Martian Successor Nadesico TV anime series in a compact cardboard box. Unlike most of the ADV thinpak releases, this one actually contains some extras. Included are all 26 episodes from the TV series in english and japanese audio (2.0) and an english subtitle track. In my opion the dubbed version is quite worthy but the major flaw is that the Ruri character can not compare the its unique counterpart (some flair of the series is lost) . Extra features include 3 commentary tracks (from some of the english stammer actors/actresses) of selected episodes which are quite laughable, character bios, tidy opening/closing and some ADV previews. Apart from the box you derive 6 DVD thincases with nice artwork as camouflage and a Nadesico flyer (no booklets or other admire stuff) . But regarding the mark no one should complain. I won’t spoil a lot about the series itself except that Nadesico is a unusual and shiny mixture of different genres (and probably a bit underrated) . Definitely a purchase consideration for all those who are into anime and do not have this yet.

This is the current ‘thinpak’ command of the common Sci-fi Action-Comedy Anime Nadesico. The ‘thinpak’ series is ADV Films’ (the licensor for this series) arrangement of giving it’s customers cheaper boxsets of whole series of Anime, the cost being their shrimp size and usually harmful (if not totally removed) extras compared to the stale box sets. Typically a gargantuan value nonetheless.

This series focuses on the Nadesico, a highly-advanced space-faring battleship created by a private military company called Nergal for the apparent sole purpose of rescuing colonists on Mars from the threat of an alien run known as the “Jovian Lizards”. Being the most advanced allotment of military equipment man can execute, no ordinary crew can successfully control it, so unusual individuals from all walks of life are called to be it’s crew.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Martian Successor Nadesico Perfect Collection! Click Here

Unfortunately, these individuals are “current” in terrible ways as well, consisting mostly of women who have cramped to no military experience and personality quirks. To originate with, their captain, Yurika Misamaru, a Japanese woman with a shrewd tactical mind, tends to act like an screech airhead and is idea of by Nergal as being dinky more than eye-candy the crew will blindingly listen to because she’s splendid. Their chief engineer Seiya Uribitake is an atypical indignant scientist who neglects his family to work on highly destructive and unique devices such as maid robots that fire missiles. Their science officer, Ruri Hoshino, is a genetically-engineered young girl who regards everyone around her as an idiot and is totally inexperienced at interacting with others. Most notably, their ace pilot, Akito Tenkawa, is formally a cook, not a pilot!

Akito Tenkawa is the main focus of the legend, a Martian-born man who was discontinuance childhood friends with Yurika (who was also born on Mars) who struggles to understand how he ended up on Earth when his last memories were of him on Mars struggling (and apparently failing) to achieve a young girl from invading Jovian Lizards and staring death in the face himself, as well as his yelp alarm of the Jovians, and the mystery of the supposed execute of his parents. He also must struggle with the fact that absence has made the heart grow fonder with Yurika and she will not finish fawning over him, constantly trying to compose him drop in appreciate with her. Akito’s romantic problems compound when other women on the ship start to see him as well.

The series both takes itself seriously and engages in self-parody, never allowing itself to partake too remarkable in one over the other. The action scenes are usually quite serious, with the dependable misfortune of people dying in battle. Meanwhile when there are no immediate threats to life and limb, the characters deal with more laughable problems on the ship. This is one of those series that actually manages to balance dramatic action and situational comedy.

The animation and artwork is highly detailed and calm, with many surfaces having shines consistent with a vivid sci-fi setup.

The convey acting is beneficial in Japanese, spoken by old-fashioned Japanese thunder actors, though at points the characters will randomly impart partially or even fully in English, sometimes with hilarious results such as an early point in the series where Yurika addresses a astronomical gathering of military minds completely in English, with a very thick Japanese accent.

The exclaim acting in English is more than passable. The direct actors clearly achieve worry into their roles, especially Spike Spencer as Akito Tenkawa, easily nailing the feeling of a anime-loving cook constantly thrown in ridiculous situations where his life may be in wretchedness. Never the less, despite the anguish and proper work the actors save in, some of their voices don’t always seem to fit the characters and the scripts they read from may differ a bit from what was originally said in the Japanese version though thankfully, it never strays too far to the point of ridiculousness.

The subtitled translation of the series is very faithful, apparently updated from previous subtitled translation of the series.

All in all, I highly recommend this series, it makes a large impression and is a stout value with this residence.

No one is spared in the audience. People in the audience of different ethnicity will be picked and utilized into his comedy routine as well as anyone in the audience. May it be the woman who gets up to go to the bathroom, to the man who brought his child to the performance, Russell Peters has a competent go of comedy in which the pacing on the DVD is fat of non-stop fun, one joke after the other and no pausing of laughter. Peter’s comedy delivery, facial expressions of his comedy routine was done very well.

The accompany CD features the performance but where the DVD is about 1 hr. and 19 minutes, the CD is about 57 minutes long. So, more or less, the Comedy Central edited performance is probably what is featured on the CD and I’ve already listened to it several times. It’s a very well-behaved comedy CD and even without the visuals of the DVD, the jokes are impartial as humorous and hearing the audience laughing, gasping and cheering at each joke is heard clearly.

Overall, “Red, White and Brown” is an luscious, fun and fabulous performance. Russell Peters was on top of his game that night and it showed. You can’t back but laugh at his comedy!

VIDEO & AUDIO:

Part of what makes a comedy performance on DVD work effectively is to present the audience and “Red, White and Brown” definitely has a friendly number of cameras to come by finish ups of reactions to closeups of the people that Peters targets for his jokes and a top-notch angles from different parts of the venue and of course discontinuance up of Peters. Editing was done really well and thus you regain sterling cuts of Peters and then various audience reaction.

The lighting was done really well inside the venue and overall a very honorable choice for venue for the performance.

As for the audio, the audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and English Stereo. You can clearly hear Peters and the audience laughing and gasping, clapping at the jokes.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are a fine number of special features included on this release. Included are:

* Featurette: White Jacket Bootleg - This segment features about 10 minutes of comedy focusing on “Women are Thinkers” and “David and Vickey”. Both have optional commentary featuring Russell Peters, Clayton Peters and Director Jigar Talati. I have to say that the segment on “David and Vickey” was fair hilarious. Two co-workers near to observe the note and Peters was honest relentless in using these two in his bit. Well-done!

* Featurette: Attend the Troops - This features comedy on the “USS Eisenhower” and “Saddam’s Bitches in a Building” (with optional commentary featuring Russell Peters, Clayton Peters and Director Jigar Talati) .

* Deleted Scenes: This feature scenes that were deleted from the extended play of “Red, White and Brown” but nevertheless, these additional scenes are equally as comical.

Additional Scenes: Filipino Mom

Additional Scenes: Indians and Filipinos

Additional Scenes: Ethnic Photos

Additional Scenes: Arab-A-Phobia

I was definitely blissful with Russell Peters “Red, White and Brown”, his ability to continuously showcase joke after joke, incorporate the audience into his comedy routine speedily, no pausing fair a mild lumber of comedy.

Again this comedy is no holds barred, Chinese, Indians, Jewish, African-American, Latino, Filipino, Italians, etc. Peters goes all out and overall, manages to have one well-done performance on DVD and also on CD.

As mentioned, a pleasurable comedy DVD needs to have profitable editing, fine lighting, audience participation and a various camera angles and everything else to work well. In this case, the venue, editing, the various camera angles and audience participation was perfect. Sound is determined on both the DVD and CD and you can’t ask for anything more. On the DVD, you obtain a friendly number of special features and the optional commentary for the featurettes as well.

I have no doubt in my mind that we will search for more of Russell Peters in the advance future. The man is one of the top comedians in North America moral now and watching this… joke after joke and the plan he presented it, everything worked on this DVD. Hilarious, no holds barred comedy at its best!

So, you’re definitely going to catch your money’s worth for this DVD release. Russell Peter’s “Red, White and Brown” is highly recommended!

For Russell Peters rush and ethnicity aren’t impartial topics for casual conversation - they are the conversation. In fact, if you trust his stand-up routine Red, White and Brown there is nothing funnier to him than the eccentricities of each ethnic background. More often than not he’s legal. Red, White and Brown offers a kindly 78 shrimp stand-up routine with a surprising amount of audience participation - passive and otherwise.

I occupy Eddie Izzard’s Dress to Demolish as the Opus of stand-up. Don’t mistake me; I’ve got all the classics underneath my belt. I grew up on Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield and Eddie Murphy. Hell, I even studied Freddie Prinze’s comedic stylings for an American History course in college. The ability to dart fun at run and culture is the underlying novel of all comedy; consequently, Russell Peters’ assure runs about average. He does very shrimp to slit out a niche that others have yet to enjoy.

Serving up humor based on the stereotypes of each and every skin tone available, Russell Peters feels moral at home discussing the varying levels of cheapness of Indians, the distinctive facial features of Asians and everything in between. While he’s able to point to it all in a format that anyone can portray to - either through their knowledge of or participation in the stereotypes - he lacks that final crackle that puts it over the edge.

The most delectable fraction of the routine, and what ties it together, is the comedy that springs from his travels. His retelling of a landing on an aircraft carrier for his comedy explain for U.S. troops stood out to me as honest being hilarious in every arrangement. Also, the bits about first landing in India will ring fair with anyone’s whose ever traveled there. The comedy in Red, White and Brown exists but it feels somehow diluted in between Russell’s occupy rants and raves which will occasionally hasten off and seem to lose the audience. He picks them relieve up posthaste enough but the lulls are noticeable.

I only compare Russell Peters’ routine to Eddie Izzard in quality - I know that very few comedians can pull off a 3 hour onstage stint. The most I quiz from a stand-up DVD is a true supply of laughs. In the case of Russell Peters Red, White and Brown I found myself mostly gay. Mostly.

Extra Features:

Each of the extra segments on the DVD comes with its believe optional audio commentary except for the deleted scenes. The deleted scenes are an consuming collection of 1-3 small pieces lop out for what I’m assuming is irrelevance. However, the deleted scenes feature a memorable caveat wherein an unwitting Chinese youth finds himself the unwanted focus of Peters and his prying questions into the girl sitting next to him who very like a flash identifies herself as “not his girlfriend”. The comedy there is ample.

The feature commentary on the stand-up itself is unusual because hearing a comedian comment on his acquire stand-up fair seems weird. While Clayton Peters and Director Jigar Talati effect along to ask him for more depth into some of the various stories he tells - overall the main audio track proves to be more worthwhile. But for the Russell Peters fans it may help as a more tantalizing experience. Other clips include pieces of his “Help the Troops” and “White Jacket Bootleg” tapes.

A icy tiny extra included in the DVD release is an Audio CD copy of the stand-up routine. I’ve always been a huge fan of this conception for Stand-up DVD releases. Gracious stand-up comedy doesn’t need the visual element and I reflect for the most share Russell Peters’ works well in its purely audio incarnation.

“Surfwise” is another intelligent feature-length documentary by filmmaker Doug Pray, who has made several comical, enlightening films on pop-culture sub-groups such as the Seattle grunge scene (”Hype”) and hip-hop DJ turntabulists (”Scratch”) .

In this modern film he paints a one-third celebratory, two-thirds tragic portrait of the Paskowitz family, a once-legendary surfing clan whose patriarch, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz dropped out of mainstream society in the tedious 1950s, to follow a near-absolute rejection of unique materialism. Paskowitz and his wife traveled anywhere on a whim for over a decade, surfing up and down the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of North America, surfing, having lots of sex and making lots of babies. In all, the Paskowitzes had nine children, eight boys and one girl, and raised them outside the confines of “straight” life. Instead of going to school, the children surfed, and were reared according to their father’s brave, yet ill-defined personal ethic.

Although Doc’s decision to descend out preceded the hippie movement by almost a decade, his family’s lag intersected with the 1960s hippie-era rejection of cultural norms, and with the “Me Generation” self-absorption of the ’70s. But while these larger cultural shifts were widespread, the choices of the Paskowitz family were distinguished more far-reaching and severe than most of the counterculture types of the time. With no fixed income and a total abandonment of the American work ethic, the Paskowitzes were both legendary and tragic. As the children came of age, the strains of traveling together in a slight camper intensified, and the family fragmented and fell apart.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Surfwise: The Amazing True Odyssey of the Paskowitz Family! Click Here

Just how worthy they fell apart is revealed in the film’s second half, which skillfully explores the gloomy side of Doc’s impulsive and absolutist philosophical rejectionism. Each of the (now grown-up) children contemplate on the internal pressures (and joys) of their vulgar lifestyle, and how completely unprepared it left them to fabricate their bear entry into adult life. Although the Paskowitzes dominated surf competitions in the early 1970s — and got grand media attention and corporate sponsorship — because they were so naive about money matters, none of them held onto the money or the opportunities they made, and their professional careers largely fizzled out. Many of the children rightfully roar their inflame towards their parents for leaving them stranded without education or options, and the film is a sharp reflection on the potential hazards of obscene alternative lifestyles. Although Doc Paskowitz clearly shoulders distinguished of the blame, he remains a sportive and compelling figure. Many of his critiques of unique society are pointed and incisive, and his candid assessments of consumerism, wage slavery and sexual repression are dazzling due to his bluntness and accuracy. It is a complex portrait, and doesn’t offer easy answers to the viewer, but rather many disturbing points to ponder. Definitely worth checking out. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Film Reviews)

Anyone looking for a shapely ode to the surfing life should end a moment before viewing this terrific documentary film about life in the Paskowitz family. Although surfing was the stated main focus of this highly unconventional family’s life, it’s not the center of the account that’s revealed in the film. Kudos to the filmmakers, who peel attend the layers of the record gradually until you net the sense of the awfulness at the center. We look a life that on the face of it might appear titillating — who hasn’t at some time or other wished for a more ‘authentic’ life? What if we could ride the rules of the prevailing society? What if we weren’t forced to be educated in institutional settings? This film and all the Paskowitz children, who thankfully are bold enough to assert of what they endured at the whims of two of the most narcissistic parents you’ll ever meet, will give some answers to those questions. Abundant with archival footage that makes the past near alive, the film also gives us interviews with everyone in the family that will resonate with you for a long time after you thought it. You may well be left with lots of questions after it’s over, but one is very contented to gawk that the kids seem to have made gracious lives for themselves despite the dreadful models that were their parents. In any case, this is a film for anyone who loves kindly documentary filmmaking — you don’t have to know anything about surfing to like this one.

1999 was one of the greatest years in original memory for film. Yet Eyes Wide Shut is all but absent from the end-of-the-year awards ceremonies and most critics lists.

The first thing to acquire in mind are that this film was hyped design beyond necessity. As if the general public had any interest in the “Kubrick” listed below “Sail” and “Kidman”. To them this was fair another Huge Actor’s next Spacious Movie. Passing it off like a “true Hollywood couple gets busy on the large conceal” heightened expectations for something Kubrick wasn’t trying to execute. It suffered the same audience reaction as The Phantom Menace, and made only a section of the money.

Critics seemed to be lining up to choose potshots at this film. Why? Original history shows us that all of Kubrick’s films from 2001 onward have been attacked critically, and subsequently hailed as classic years later. The same is fair of most of Orson Welles’ work. Few critics took the time to peek this movie more than once before spewing their venom. A filmmaker like Kubrick is not going for dispute emotional contact with the audience. He is aiming far deeper, asking the viewer to think on not only the images, but the themes, and the emotional investments of the characters. The subtlety is not something popular in today’s films, and something critics apparently can’t process snappy enough to meet a press deadline.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eyes Wide Shut! Click Here

For all those complain that the film isn’t sexy or erotic enough are missing the point completely. It’s not about sex. It’s about many other things, some of which linger in the background, some that aren’t noticeable on the initial viewing. Kubrick raises questions about our institution of marriage, the nature of faith, commitment, temptation. That most in the audience weren’t willing to meet Kubrick, Coast, and Kidman halfway in this meditation isn’t a comment on the quality on the filmmaking, it’s a shortcoming of the sensory-deadened society. If Kubrick had been more in touch with today’s film culture, would he have bothered to give us this complex of an experience? Let’s thank him for his seclusion.

A Effect on the DVD not being letterboxed: Kubrick (again, like Welles) preferred the aspect ratio of television, and left extra position in his frame for their widescreen theatrical showings (some are letterboxed on Home Video as well) . The Bright, Elephantine Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut are meant to be seen in the full-screen standard format, and therefore aren’t available in letterbox, so don’t feel you’re being cheated out of any compositional convey. Unfortunately you are being cheated by Warner Bros’ refusal to hold the digital figures blocking the orgy scenes, inserted for theatrical release to regain the “R” rating. Only in America…

The Special Edition is a welcome release simply because it’s the unrated, European, uncensored version of the film. I won’t start to review the film itself except to say that it’s probably Kubrick’s least appreciated and most underrated film–undeservedly so– I personally judge it’s honest as gleaming as his other works. Look it more than once before you settle.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eyes Wide Shut! Click Here

That said, the fresh Warner release has some flaws. The disk is supposed to bear BOTH versions of the film (unrated and rated), but it ONLY contains the unrated version (better that than impartial the rated one!) . But the packaging says it contains both, so there’s a large boo-boo. Also, it was originally advertised that the film would have commentary by Sydney Pollack and someone else– but there is no commentary on the film (and it doesn’t say as such on the packaging… so it must have been decided not to include it for some reason) . Nevertheless, it was originally touted in press releases that it would have commentary that I was looking forward to hearing.

After that, the extras a qualified and the movie looks ample. But someone at Warner Home Video needs to have a reprimanding! :)

An oddball film that chronicles the rise and tumble of an early 1970s glam rock star, Velvet Goldmine almost defies categorization. While separating fiction from fact can be tricky, the record is based shapely worthy on the life of David Bowie; some details have been tweaked for dramatic accomplish, but there’s surprisingly tiny deviation from unbiased about any biography that’s ever been written about him. The non-linear story takes the viewer into the glittery world of one Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) and the entourage surrounding him. Slade had created an alter-ego for himself called Maxwell Demon (as Bowie created Ziggy Stardust), and the character had almost near to eclipse Slade himself. After an on-stage stunt literally backfires, Slade’s fans revolted against him, and the singer vanished into drugs and obscurity.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Velvet Goldmine! Click Here

His sage is conveyed in flashbacks when, in 1984, journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale) is assigned to write a tenth anniversary retrospective on Slade and perhaps bid the singer’s ultimate fate. Arthur interviews Slade’s first manager, Cecil (Michael Feast) and then his bitter ex-wife, Mandy (Toni Collette), and from them pieces together Slade’s early background as a musician, including the players who proved crucial to his career: maverick second manager Jerry Devine (Eddie Izzard), unstable proto-punk rocker Kurt Wild (Ewan McGregor), and deceptively fearful wardrobe mistress Shannon (Emily Woof) . Arthur of course is no mere bystander to all these events; the unfolding record reveals that he was a immense fan of Slade, turning to music as an dash during his terrorized adolescence. In digging up Slade’s past, he also unleashes a lot of his fill demons, and the memoir is unbiased as noteworthy Arthur’s as Brian’s.

Although the film stands as a loving homage to glitter, it also doesn’t hesitate to command that the core of the phenomenon was essentially empty. Somehow, Velvet Goldmine manages to both celebrate and condemn glam rock: Slade starts his career as a naive singer-songwriter with some entertaining and original ideas, but once Devine’s corporate machine takes over, Slade’s creativity is stifled to the point where he’s a prisoner of his maintain artifice. Ultimately, the pre-fabricated exterior is all that’s left of him.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Velvet Goldmine! Click Here

Teasing out the sage thread is no easy feat. Velvet Goldmine is liberally draped in yards of trappings: musical interludes, documentary sequences, images that often go unexplained and don’t add much; there’s characters, scenes, and status threads that relieve no purpose other than window dressing. Some of this proves effective (a prefer on early music video is a valid hoot), but remarkable of the excess could’ve been trimmed away in the interests of tightening the chronicle. While Arthur’s investigation into the Slade mystery is handled well, other status elements needed more attention.

Bowiephiles will scrutinize every phase of their idol’s early career: the shapely mod, the curly-haired hippie, the cross-dressed singer-songwriter, the flamboyant glam rocker (there’s even a very fun streak at Serious Moonlight-era Bowie that cleverly ties into the main state) . The characters mirror exactly those in Bowie’s orbit, but viewers who don’t know the characters and don’t win the jokes/ references are noble to derive themselves baffled, not to mention place off by the film’s excesses.

Anyone willing to sift through the spangles and feathers, however, will be rewarded with some terrific acting. Ewan McGregor is mostly wasted as the unstable Kurt Wild–he has a couple of knockout performance sequences, but Wild otherwise spends most of his scenes drugged out and exploding in mad diatribes; although McGregor gets top billing, Wild is really a supporting player. Izzard is a lot of fun as the oily Devine; Woof handles Shannon’s transformation from innocent schoolgirl to shrewd operator with aplomb; Feast is terrifically funny in his work as the ignominiously discarded Cecil. Bale is utterly daring as Arthur: he has to place across a lot of weakness and shyness and self-doubt, as well as Arthur’s sexual awakening. Many actors wouldn’t have touched this character with the proverbial ten-foot pole, but Bale handles the material–including one humiliating moment in Arthur’s life–without the slightest hint of self-consciousness. Toni Colette is a marvel, taking her character from naive party girl to cynical rock wife to jaded, washed-up ex–she’s comic and subtle and unsuitable, suggesting a deep and respectable adore for Brian, damage and betrayal when he essentially dumps her for Kurt, and finally weary bitterness that the world at mammoth has forgotten her. Of all the characters, Mandy seems to have truly loved the wild circus of glam rock, and she longs for the past with a touching sense of nostalgia.

As terrific as all these performances are, the film belongs to Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, whose turn as Bowie is nothing short of riveting. A kind of raw sexual energy seems to pour out of him; he’s magnetic, and considerable like Bowie himself, it’s impossible to seize your eyes off him. The physical resemblance is particularly uncanny, and Rhys-Meyers gets all the diminutive details down perfectly: the expressions, the posture, the body language. Like Bale, he tackles the role head-on, and it’s a testament to his skill that he conveys such depth of emotion through layers of costume, wig, and makeup. Even his reedy assure evokes the young Bowie, and yes, that’s him singing in four different numbers (two of them were left off the movie’s soundtrack CD) . This role, more than any of his others, brings home the depth and extent of JRM’s talent. Everyone in the film is stellar, but only Rhys-Meyers seems touched with honorable prodigy. Anyone who admires him as an actor shouldn’t miss him here.

Velvet Goldmine’s other sizable strength is its music, which consists of classic tunes from the era, as well as songs specifically written for the film. The overall conclude is of a long-lost Bowie album, and it’s a pity that two or three show-stoppers were left off the soundtrack. Music is of course inextricably linked to fable in this type of film, extinct to illuminate character and propel the legend. A couple of place pieces don’t work, but mostly the music is incredible, melding perfectly to the visual images and adding depth to each scene.

Velvet Goldmine plainly isn’t a movie for everyone, and almost certainly some would net it unwatchable; mileage will vary greatly depending on one’s tolerance for ecstatic characters, men in hotfoot, and a heightened sense of camp. There’s also a *lot* of sex (satisfied, straight, group, and solo) and fat frontal nudity (male and female) –the film is rated R for a very honorable reason. Velvet Goldmine can probably be summed up as a diamond in the rough–the viewer may need to do some chipping, but the glittering facets that are revealed produce the wretchedness worthwhile.

Many of this film’s critics perform the mistake of taking it too literally - though based on Bowie’s life, it’s not intended to be right or biographical. It is a glam fantasy, both attractive and painful at the same time. The narrative is very complex, but every bit of it is worthwhile, so if you didn’t “score it” the first time around, try watching it again! I have seen Velvet Goldmine many times, and every time there is something novel that I contemplate, or something else to reflect about. Todd Haynes’ script and direction and pure genius, and that’s all there is to it!

I can not score fault with a single of the actors - each of the stars gives a astounding performance. Toni Collette, Christian Bale, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Ewan McGregor give depth and emotion to characters, so that even at their harshest or most brutal moments, one can’t befriend but feel for them. Micko Westmoreland (aka The Bowling Green) is a standout as Jack Fairy, who is glamour personified. There is unbelievable chemistry between the male leads, who truly bring to life the movie’s jubilant romance. Their on-screen kiss is more passionate and exquisite than any I have ever seen on film, happy or straight.

But before you open taking the movie too seriously, it’s also huge fun! You can analyze it, which is worthwile, or you can pop it in for a night of fluff and glamour. Everything is visually captivating… feathers, sequins, spaceships, and glitter everwhere. Not to mention the music! Perhaps the most distinguished thing I gained from this movie was an introduction to a genre of music I knew nothing about. How did I survive for so long without Roxy Music?

I HIGHLY recommend this movie!

“Once upon a time, not so long ago, the children of the revolution looked up into the sky. And there, hovering amid a boulevard of stars, was a vision of the future as outlandish and stunning as any dream. What they saw that night no one can ever say. But what they heard can serene be heard today.”

I remember watching this movie when it first came out on VHS. As a kid, I idea it was a unpleasant movie, a possible scenario of World War III. After buying the DVD and watching it again, I must say that it aloof stirs emotions in me. This depiction of an attack on U.S. soil is possible, but unbelievable. To ogle this movie and say that the events shown could NEVER happen is foolish and ignorant.

One previous reviewer asks what happened to NATO in the movie. Well, if the reviewer had paid attention, NATO had dissolved in the movie. Another Valuable detail that some reviewers left out was the nuclear attack on most bases and federal headquarters. The communists did not unprejudiced recall all their planes and tanks and objective march in. A nuclear “first-strike” was initiated to throw the U.S. completely off-balance. Powers Boothe, who plays a downed F-15 pilot, explains all of these events to the kids that are now acting as guerillas in the movie. As someone who served in the Air Force as a missle begin control officer, I got to sight how strategies like the ones portrayed in this movie could work.

The whole myth in this movie is about Russians and Cubans (along with Nicaraguans) invading the U.S. and how it affects the lives of some high school kids. These kids become “The Wolverines”. Named after their high school mascot, they become guerillas, slowly taking out minute enemy installations and equipment. They do not single-handedly end all the commies as some other reviewers assume that was depicted! There were other guerilla units, too.

The film portrays war in a somewhat negative light, but preserves patriotism and acknowledges the legitimacy of the Second Amendment. I highly recommend buying this DVD because of that! The only blemish that it has is the sound quality. I expected better sound with Dolby Digital and DVD quality.

I was walking around at the local dvd store yesterday looking for a nice movie to inspect that same evening. My behold fell on Red Dawn, and I read what the benefit of the dvd said. I was tempted and it sounded like an tantalizing film, so I bought it and watched it.

Red Dawn follows the memoir of 8 teenagers that manage to speed an attack on their home town when world war III breaks out. They flit into the mountains and from there they attack the enemyforces with gurellia attacks. This leads to colossal, but also brutal action scenes, thrilling, but also disturbing situations and highly emotional scenes that note the human soul wound and broke down.

As soon as the credits were rolling over the mask I was unruffled and unprejudiced gazed at the cover, thinking about what I had seen. The message had reached me loud and positive.

The casting of this film is well done. All of the actors act realistic and their emotion feels terribly staunch, which definitely helps you to feel for them. The cast contains renowned stars that where all not that celebrated while starring in this film. It contains Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Road House, Ghost), Charlie Sheen (Platoon, Wall street), Lea Thompson (Encourage to the Future I, II and III) and Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) . The rest of the main cast is less illustrious (at least, to me), but tranquil do one hell of a job bringing their characters to life that all feel like trusty personnes in stead of objective a few movie characters.

The only thing that should have been different about this film is that you don’t really derive to know the characters before the war stars. After only about four minutes the attack starts, so you don’t really know what kind of main characters you are dealing with. But when they are together and thinking what there can be done, you will survey who is who and what kind of characters they are.

The film has a lot of action sequences and thrilling moments that will entertain action and war fans for determined. Also Drama fans are definitely on the good space with this movie cause it really touches you. Comedy fans will have to view someplace else, cause there are only about two minute jokes in the entire film, for the rest the film is horrid, realistic, even disturbing at some points and is definitely not for the faint of heart. It really shows what happens to people during war, how their feelings change, how their entire personality changes. The message is therefor loud and clear: war is dreadful, changes people terribly and gives nothing more than destruction, distress and a lot of suffering.

The film has a correct eighties gawk and helps to give the record a kind of gritty see. It is a well shot report and although some of the camerapositions don’t buy some expressions that well, it shows you what has to be shown. The sets are mostly outdoor and there are fine landscapes that encourage bring the yarn to life. It does not feel like being filmed in a backyard. The music is nice but isn’t that indicate in all the scenes which is a pitty some times.

The film is composed echoing in my mind. It certain left an impression on me and the film is an emotional hotfoot that left me actually caring for the characters.

A film that I will remember for a long time to arrive.

How will it go with you? There is only one blueprint to rep out: explore this film and the message will be presented loud and positive to you.

Well, to train you that, I haven’t survey the dubbed version of Cardcaptors the movie yet. But I have peer the Cardcaptor Sakura movie. They both have to same residence, but the CCS movie (unusual) is arrangement better than ANY american dubbed anime…in the dub, they left out the hints of Syaoran (Li) and Sakura + also had slit many scenes that were hiss to be droll. Anyways, I have watched to first subbtitle movie of CCS, and I recommand this *original* movie to Cardcaptors and CCS fans. Also if they’re planning to released the second movie…(hmm, maybe not cuz it’s a Sakura+Syaoran movie, they screw this one up ALOT in the tv series, so it’s not gonna happen…hehe ;) ) I also preffer the subbtitle…^_^

Movies that are based on books usually have to leave out or change scenes or characters. For the readers of the book leaving out the smallest character, or changing the contrivance somebody dresses could build them leave the theatre very annoyed. Where the Red fern Grows, being a modern based movie, had many scenes and characters left out. The movie itself was fine, but it was not upright to the book.

Where the Red Fern Grows did have catch out and change many characters for the movie to be a reasonable length. Sammy the cat was not included but that is understandable, for he did not have a very well-known role in the book. The one thing that annoyed me and many other readers most was the change in the dogs. Passe Dan and Puny Ann, Billy’s dogs, were to have shared a special bond with Billy and have distinctive personalities. Extinct Dan being aggressive and Dinky Ann being clever were some traits that I did not discover in his movie. The two dogs wouldn’t hunt with any other person but Billy, and there was a very strong connection between him and his dogs. I do not feel that the dogs in this movie really cared for Billy and they were objective ordinary dogs that knew how to slay raccoons.

In every book there are a few scenes that are added to give a sure attain, or exaggerate a characters feeling. Naturally, directors leave these scenes out to do that movie exquisite rather that unimaginative. Directors might change scenes too to wait on with the memoir line. But the change in his movie did not really serve the fable line at all. At the waste of the broad coon-hunting tournament Billy is supposed to get first prize. In this movie somebody else wins, but gives Billy the trophy and the prize money. Billy was supposed to have won but the directors probably left it out because it would be too determined. To me that is not a strong enough reason.

I know that movies have to change the tale a miniature but this movie changed it a limited too powerful for my liking. If you are considering watching this movie please rent it, for you shouldn’t slay your money on a movie you will leer once and then forget about.

This fabulous book deserves mighty more than this movie. I was hoping for so grand more, especially from Disney. It seemd to me that it was made swiftly and on a tight budget…Coleman and Ned Beatty (sp? ) did their share, but Dave Matthews? This myth did not deserve to have an actor if his inability playing the role of the young man’s father. As a young man who read this book over and over, and for a Father who was furious about having his 6 year obsolete son notice this movie with him, I am very, very dissapointed.

If you long for a unruffled villa on the banks of a mild lake, dream of unique roses on your breakfast tray, yearn for the serenity of the Italian sun, then ogle this intelligent movie. The setting is the last summer before World War II when a inspiring middle-aged spinster named Miss Bentley (Vanessa Redgrave) arrives for her annual vacation. She is immediately attracted to Major Wilshire (Edward Fox), a fellow Britisher amongst the Italians and Americans on holiday. She believes you can deem a man by his ears, and Miss Bentley has dwelling her sights on capturing the Major’s ears. Alas, into this mix comes a contemptible American (Uma Thurman) who immediately catches the Major’s ears, eyes, and other parts of him. Miss Bentley is unlit when she realizes he is smitten with the pretty young Miss Beaumont, but she does not give up. Humiliation and rejection advance her draw, along with a young Italian who finds the older woman quite charming. Amidst a scenic backdrop and with the strains of Verdi’s “Aida” and other soul-stirring Italian music, everyone winds up with the legal partner and all, we presume, will live happily ever after. A light, clever, and often comical film to indulge in as you dream of sunny days basking in romance and beauty.

So you’ve unprejudiced gotten home from a rough day at the office, or your heart-broken about something and wish you could recall a spur of the moment trail to oh so relaxing and romantic Italy (preferably Lake Como!) . For most of us, this can’t unbiased happen, so I negate you to study “A month by the lake”. It’s a simple, relaxing legend, and seems to prefer you away into its’ world. I highly recommend this movie, no violence, clench-your-fingernails-suspense, or promiscuous obsenities. And it comes with likable characters, tremendous music, and a astonishing setting, fabricate that dazzling.
